Hey, I think "mimicking another animal" is pretty old-hat in the animal kingdom. Even MOTHS do that!

Though this reminds me to add another "Stereotype" to the Skunks...

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Badgers cannot speak to humans, nor use their paws to easily manipulate objects.
Responsibility (Shit)- It doesn't give one.

Total: Abilities: 8 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 18 / Defenses: 9 (61)

Era: Modern
Range: Eurasia.
Stereotypes: Kindly, dopey.
Colouring: Grey, black & tan
Size: Up to 3.5 feet long (14-37 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Typically small groups (3-23 individuals)
Diet: Opportunistic omnivore- grains, fruit, earthworms, small mammals, bugs, carrion, etc.
Tactics: Digging for prey, or snarling full-on assaults.

-The European Badger sports the most distinctive facial markings of its kind. Fastidious cleaners, they are famous for their extensive burrows (the largest of the mustelid group), which may occasionally be shared with other animals, such as rabbits, foxes & raccoon dogs. They are the most social of badgers, forming groups that number about six on average, but are famously-aggressive when provoked. They are known to carry bovine tuberculosis, which has resulted in many culls in England, where they are seen as iconic animals of the countryside (the oldest and wisest of the four Wind in the Willows characters. Despite the name, they exist all across Asia. "Badger Baiting" was once a popular blood sport, consisting of having living badgers trapped in boxes, which would be set upon with dogs. This was outlawed in 1835.

-European Badgers' weight is second-highest among terrestrial Mustelids, after only the Wolverine. Despite that, they are among the least-carnivorous members of Carnivora, eating just about anything- earthworms of all things are their most important food source, alongside fruits, grains, and bugs.

Other Badgers:
Image

ASIAN BADGER: Very light-furred, these Badgers live across Eurasia, and are typically among the smaller Badger types. Males weigh only 13 lbs. in many cases.

Image

JAPANESE BADGER: Typically the smallest of the regular Badgers, with lighter fur. They do not form pair bonds. Like various other carnivores, they were thought to be shapeshifters in Japanese mythology.

Image

Jesus, these are aptly named.

HOG BADGER: The long-nosed Hog Badger gets its name from the broad, flat end of its snout. Hailing from China, it's about as big as the other Badgers (15-31 lbs.)

-The American Badger is not closely related to the European or Honey Badgers, existing in its own group, which split off 18 million years ago, before any of the others. It prefers to dig for prey, such as mice & groundhogs, but especially snakes. They have occasionally been seen hunting in tandem with Coyotes, as prey respond differently to both and thus become vulnerable (ground squirrels, for example, flee into holes against Coyotes & open ground against Badgers). They can fend off larger predators, but are still vulnerable to Bears, Bobcats, Lynx, and especially Cougars, who are their primary predator. Badgers typically enlarge burrows created by creatures they prey upon, such as gophers.

Total: Abilities: 8 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 11 / Powers: 27 / Defenses: 9 (71)

Era: Modern
Range: Africa.
Stereotypes: Doesn't give a shit.
Colouring: Grey, black & tan

Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs.
Diet: Opportunistic hunter- mammals, carrion, etc.

-Badgers are a tiny step down from Wolverines, being a few pounds smaller, and more ground-dwelling. They're still tough as nails, though, and no animal in their right mind would screw with one. When enraged, there are few things scarier or more bitey. It's very much a scaled-back Wolverine that packs some Burrowing onto it- not enough to travel THAT far (1,800 feet in an hour doesn't sound like much, but YOU try digging that fast). The American, European & Honey Badgers are all similar in size and appearance (despite not actually being THAT closely-related), but the Honey Badger is now the most-infamous, owing to the popular YouTube video featuring a Honey Badger walking around, being bitten by cobras, killing them, then passing out, only to awaken and then EAT THE SNAKES, because "Honey Badger don't give a shit!".

-Honey Badgers are infamous throughout Africa for being tenacious, vicious attackers. Very territorial, they will attack Cape Buffalo who come into their range, not stopping until the animal has been driven off. They also practice "Surplus Killing", meaning that a single badger invading a chicken coop will often kill three-dozen animals. No living animal screws with them- their tireless nature in combat can lead them to drive off even LIONS, who know better than to risk injury dealing with the little buggers. The idea of a 29-lb. creature driving off a 400-lb. giant cat is pretty hilarious, but makes sense- Crazy beats Big any day.

-At PL 5, Honey Badgers are equal to a Wolf, which is pretty nuts when you consider the size difference. Their Intimidation, Toughness and Fortitude are all sky-high for such tiny animals as well, owing to their ability to survive tons of damage, and drive off even larger animals. The fact that the animals are sized perfectly to fit right underneath the soft underbellies of Lions & Buffalo is probably a big help, too. Honey Badger skin is so durable that piercing weapons are almost always ineffective- arrows and spears tend to do little damage, and the skin is so loose-fitting than a captured Badger can actually turn around on its attackers if it's bitten!

Quick aside Jab you might want to add this to the mix
There are two pairs of mammae.[26] The honey badger possesses an anal pouch which, unusual among mustelids, is eversible,[27] a trait shared with hyenas and mongooses. The smell of the pouch is reportedly "suffocating", and may assist in calming bees when raiding beehives.[28]

huh- missed that. It's such a tiny bit of the bio! Which mustelids can and do stuff like this is very random- many of them stink (more of a Feature) while others have truly noxious abilities. As so many animals depend upon Scent, it's a really big deal to be hit by something like that.

Disabled (Aquatic)- Otters are ungainly on land, and have poor long-distance vision outside of water.
Vulnerable (Soiled Coats)- Otters require the air-filled fur from their pelts to maintain warm body temperatures in cold environments. Events such as oil spills will harm this, and leave the otters in danger from hypothermia.

Total: Abilities: -22 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 34 / Defenses: 5 (32)

-Many Otters are no smaller than all but the tiniest Weasels. Most are largely-unknown and rarely seen. I had to do some playing around with the statline to make them fit a tiny, PL 1 creature, since their small size gives them huge bonuses to Defense.

Tiny Otters:
SMOOTH-COATED OTTER: A South Asian species weighing 7-11 lbs. Related to the Asian Small-Clawed Otter.

Image

HAIRY-NOSED OTTER: This is one of the least-known and most-endangered Otters, found scattered across Southeast Asia (mostly Indonesia). They're about 11-18 lbs., and eat mostly fish, water snakes and crabs. Their name comes from the fact that they don't have the "button nose" common to most of Carnivora- their noses just look like the rest of them, covered in fur.

Image

ASIAN SMALL-CLAWED OTTER: The smallest Otters, these weigh only 6-7 lbs. and are usually less than two feet long!

Image

SPOTTED-NECKED OTTER: A central African Otter weighing 6-14 lbs., they're named for white blotches on their chest and throat.

Image

MARINE OTTER: This rare and largely-unknown Otter lives along the most western edge of South America, living in oceanic habitats. It's one of the smallest Otters, and is the smallest marine mammal in the world, weighing only 6-11 lbs. They apparently live in small groups, as they're typicaly only seen in groups of three.

-Probably the best-understood Otter is an 11-30 lb. River Otter that lives across much of North America. They typically live 8-9 years in the wild, but regularly make it past 20 in captivity. Despite being so small, they have killed Beavers and hibernating Alligator Snapping Turtles, but this is rare. They were once MUCH more common (found in every major drainage area in North America), but are still very common (so common it's literally called the "Common Otter").

Era: Modern
Range: North America
Stereotypes: Kindly & friendly.
Colouring: Brown
Size: Up to 3 feet long (11-33 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Small Clans (2-10).
Diet: Fish, shellfish, small reptiles.
Tactics: Rapid-swimming sneak attacks.

Other Small Otters:
Image

EURASIAN OTTER: An extremely-widespread, but Near-Threatened species, the Eurasian Otter is 15-37 lbs.

Image

NEOTROPICAL OTTER: These River Otters are from Central & South America, and are about 11-33 lbs.

Image

SOUTHER RIVER OTTER: Hailing from the very southern tip of South America, these River Otters also inhabit marine environments. They're about 11-22 lbs. Vigorously hunted for their pelts, they live in only seven isolated environments across Argentina & Chile.
