Omega Flight

OMEGA FLIGHT:
-Omega Flight (the second version) was formed by The Master of the World as a Mook Army to capture Alpha Flight member Talisman at the mall, but were beaten by Windshear and Beta Flight (the trainees of the Alphans). They're pretty much a team of one-note losers who did nothing, but reappeared as James Hudson returned as The Antiguard, after being modified by The Master.

-The original Omega Flight were formed by Jerome Jaxon to fight Guardian and Alpha Flight. It gathered the various people booted out of Alpha Flight's training program into one squad- Diamond Lil, Flashback, Smart Alec and Wild Child. Along with Jaxon's robot secretary Delphine Courtney, they faced Alpha Flight in West Edmonton Mall, where Madison Jeffries destroyed Courtney, and Jaxon was killed by Guardian overloading the Box robot the villain was controlling. The other members went on to their various fates (Lil & Wild Child eventually joined the Alphans).

-The second Omega Flight was formed by The Master of the World. Their purpose was the same, but their membership was now a band of ridiculous, one-note Jobbers, because part of being a super-genius in Marvel Comics includes not being able to tell between powerful villains and a band of gigantic morons (a problem also afflicting Magneto, Stryfe and Apocalypse, clearly). When the Master fails in his goal, he takes it out on his team, slaughtering every one of them except Brain Drain.

-A third Omega Flight was part of the fallout of Marvel's Civil War- a band of superheroes who abandoned America after it instituted the Superhuman Registration Act instead moved to Canada (which... already HAD such an act). It was a short-lived Limited Series. A fourth Omega Flight was briefly seen in Hickman's Avengers run, investigating one of Ex Nihilo's pod-thingies in Canada. The characters received no characterization whatsoever. I mean, they were one-off characters in a book that was so overloaded that members of the actual Avengers went months without appearing.

Jerome Jaxon

JEROME JAXON
Created By:
John Byrne
First Appearance: Alpha Flight #3 (Oct. 1983)
Role: Forgotten Villain
Group Affiliations: Omega Flight

-Hee- this guy was born in the same place I was- Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. He was Mac Hudson's boss, and the guy who wanted to use the Guardian armor as a weapon. Mac leaving and becoming a national hero using the armor ended up destroying Jaxon's life and career- a failed suicide attempt also left him unable to walk. Obsessed with revenge, he joined Roxxon Oil (Marvel's "Oil Is Evil" analogue) and formed Omega Flight from Alpha Flight's cast-offs such as Smart Alec, Wild Child, Diamond Lil, Flashback & Roger Bochs. Though Bochs had joined only to destroy Omega Flight from within, Jaxon had taken control of the Box Robot and was using it- Mac used his suit to overload the Box robot- the feedback blasting into the helmet Jaxon was wearing, killing him. Jaxon got a bit of a last laugh, however, as the overloading also destroyed Mac's suit, immolating him. This was Byrne's go at writing out his "boring" main character, and Mac didn't return until long after his creator had left the book.

-Jaxon is just a generic Corporate Goon and liar- not really worth statting. Assume PRE 3, INT 3, Deception 5 (+8), Government Expertise 5 (+8), But he's crippled and in a wheelchair for most of the thing.

Enemy (Alpha Flight)- Courtney seems to exist only to destroy Alpha Flight.

Total: Abilities: 44 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 49 / Defenses: 7 (114)

-Delphine Courtney was Jerry Jaxons's personal "servitor" robot- an Android that joined his Omega Flight team. Apparently he didn't even know of her robotic nature, and she was the only member of the team to remain free, as Jaxon died and the others were arrested. Later, she freed Omega Flight from jail in order to start a new plot against Alpha Flight, and disguised herself as a then-dead Guardian- this was foiled by the arrival of the Beyonder in a Secret Wars II crossover. When Madison Jeffries attacked the group, Courtney used Flashback as a human shield, killing his future version (and thus ensuring him a violent death in his own future)- an act that enraged Jeffries so much that he pulled Courtney's circuitry through her mouth and destroyed her. Parts of her "corpse" were used to construct a new "Guardian" battlesuit, this one worn by Heather Hudson.

-Courtney is a pretty boring Kill-O-Bot for the most part, but in her subsequent appearance, picked up a lot of Guardian-esque powers, including Flight 8 and a Blast (probably 10 ranks). She can also subtly influence people using a device built inside of her, but it doesn't seem to work on people with any kind of decent Will Save.

Those Northstar jobbers all look like rejected Masters of the Universe toy designs. Am I the only one seeing that?

... Holy God. That's dead-on. Except for "Mr. Nice", who's been shopping at the same store every English comic book character gets their outfits, they've got all the signs- Sadista has the overly-detailed, color-clashing outfit with funny headgear. Shortfuse is oddly plain, but still extremely muscular and with an odd color scheme. Link is just an off-brand Beast-Man/Grizzlor. Barb is similar, but to Mer-Man.

They're basically the Chinese Bootleg version of He-Man's Rogues Gallery.

Mind Control +8 Area (+8 Affliction, DC 18)

Defenses:
Dodge +6 (DC 16), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +8, Fortitude --, Will +4

Complications:
Prejudice (Obvious Superhuman)- Brain Drain is a brain in a cybernetic body.
Vulnerable (Brain)- If Schmidt's brain is left exposed, he is much more vulnerable to attack- a Brain has very little effective Toughness.

Total: Abilities: 28 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 71 / Defenses: 10 (129)

-An early Brain in a Jar concept, Brain Drain was created by Roy Thomas for his Invaders series in the 1970s (as part of the Super-Axis), and was brought up out of nowhere for this incarnation of Omega Flight. His origin is that a quartet of aliens accidentally flew their spaceship into a German man, killing him- the aliens then took out his eyes and brain and placed them into a robotic body. He then mind-controls the aliens into serving him, renaming them after four Teutonic Gods (Donar, Log, Froh & Brunnhilde)- Brunnhilde taunts him into committing suicide, which finishes off the aliens (??). He is seen alongside the Super-Axis in a Marvel Two-In-One story featuring a time-traveling Ben Grimm allying with the Liberty Legion.

-Alpha Flight reveals that his brain case was lost in the mountains for decades before he took over the mind of a nearby hiker and used it to allow an escape. He then allies with the Master of the World, gaining a new robot body. He is eventually defeated. He has most recently been seen having changed into a superhero in The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, though this is obviously played for laughs. Squirrel Girl and her roommate discover that faulty programming is the reason behind his evil actions, and so they update his technology to modern standards.

Since you brought up Arcade's goons, would the stuff Arcade did in Avengers Arena just be a Variable power limited to only working in Murderworld? That's what it seems like to me, judging by the descriptions I've read.

Also, speaking of He-Man bootlegs..that makes me want to stat up the most famous of their bootlegs...Galaxy Warriors!

Byrne saying that Alpha Flight were boring characters seems like such a cop out to me. They hardly had time for any characterization when they showed up in the Xmen, so they were pretty much total blank slates that could have easily been given some depth by a writer that cared. As far as I can tell, he didnt want to do the book so he didnt want to put any effort into them. If your stories suck, saying that the characters are boring is a pretty lame excuse. /rant YOU CREATED THE CHARACTERS!! YOU COULD HAVE MADE THEM INTERESTING IF YOU CARED!!/end_rant

Barb, Link, Sadista, and Short-Fuse?! Man, these are so obscure I never heard of them. It also reminds me that John Byre-for all his flaws-DID have a few sharp observations about the medium. He once proposed to Marvel a 5 year moratorium on creating new characters, arguing that was needed was further pruning of useless characters (Hey! There's Scourge and the Punisher!), along with updating and revamping minor character who might have potential.

So in the above example, if a writer needed villains for a Northstar/Guardian story, why didn't he/she just use some of the old Alpha Flight bad guys? There were more than enough Omega Flight members hanging out in comic book limbo that a good writer might have done something with-instead four more losers even LAMER and less well developed than jobbers like Sinew and Miss Mass.

Ah, well.

All my best.
Fascinating stuff at the Marvel offices, to be sure. The writers apparently constantly made fun of Secret Wars... even while they were drooling over the money it made.

The coke fiend is Shatner, right? I bet it's Shatner.
Nope. Not one of the major cast members. I'll do a PM later, since it was long enough that said info may no longer apply and shouldn't be a public forums thing.

-At PL 10, Ranark is tough, but certainly not unbeatable. He's only PL 7.5 defensively, like a lot of Wizards. In his first story arc, he's apparently super-big (at least going by the cover). His Growth power is gone, but he's apparently got the COOLEST DESIGN EVER, thanks to the incredible artistic talents of Dale Eaglesham, who transforms him into this ebony-skinned guy with a skull mask and bony fingers.
Yea, that has to be one of the best redesigns I've seen in a while.
