-Dive-Bomber joined Brickbat in fighting the X-Men, but upon realizing that Storm was more powerful, he tore the engine off of a passenger jet in mid-flight, forcing Storm to break off the battle and save the innocent people. The monster then snagged her from behind, and prepared to bring her to their master- as a result, Havok had to break his "No-Killing" code and kill Dive-Bomber with a Plasma Burst.

-Dive-Bomber is apparently QUITE strong, as ripping an engine off of a passenger jet is likely beyond the typical Brood Sleazoid. He's not enough to avoid being one-shotted by Havok, though.

Brood have weird, extra-long tentacles that are prehensile.
Which make them very popular with the ladies. At least in some kinds of Japanese anime.

-One of the few Brood Mutants whose human victim was mentioned by name (boy, Claremont loved naming pointless background characters "Delgado"- one of the Acolytes shares this name), Spitball was a Denver lawyer who suddenly developed the power to spit out glowing balls of plasma. Given care by a paramedic that was secretly a Brood named Brickbat, Harry was infected with a Brood egg and turned into a monster. Spitball attempted to kill Havok of the X-Men during a fight, but accidentally shot his plasma ball at part of the stage they were fighting under, killing both him and Lockup. All in all, a pretty useless Blaster if his only kills a friendly fire.

-Lockup had the ability to Paralyze others by touch. He fought the X-Men, paralyzing Wolverine when he was busy fighting his own teammates (mind-controlled by Temptress), but when his teammate Spitball fired a plasma ball at Havok and accidentally hit a section of a stage, it collapsed on them, killing both Sleazoids.

-Whiphand was sadistic even by Brood standards, and taunted the X-Men while attempting to kill them- when he attacked Longshot and Dazzler, Colossus snuck up behind him and "Riptided" him- the monster had his neck snapped. So yeah, this guy somehow didn't notice COLOSSUS sneaking up on him. In any case, he's a weak PL 7 fighter with Improved Critical & Penetrating to make his "Neural Whip" hand a little different than his otherwise-superior "Stinger".

Man, these guys. I usually like mutant jobbers like the Genoshan Press Gang or Mutant Force or the Acolytes or the Mutant Liberation Front, but these Brood yobbos are just dire. I do not want to see even one of them return! And the names. Brickbat? Whiphand? Yikes.

Thanks for diving on this grenade 'though, I only vaguely remembered these guys, and was wondering if there were any hidden gems. You've saved me from having to go back and re-read these issues. :)

Thanks :).

They’re pretty dreadful, to be sure. Obvious “ah, f*ck it- I need two issues of filler” from the creators. Claremont obviously liked the name “Blindside” enough time toss it on one if the Harriers literally the next year, but otherwise they’re dreadful.

I always found it amusing that the Brood were such obvious ripoffs of the Xenomorphs, just made with a lawyer-friendly character design and with something resembling an actual personality to justify pages of speech balloons spouting from their mouths. Did Claremont ever come out and say that he watched Alien back in '79 and thought, "Wow, I would like to do a story arc with this monster," or are we supposed to believe the similarities are a mere coincidence? Granted if that is the case you could always claim James Cameron ripped off the idea of the Alien Queen from X-Men, but that seems rather unlikely.

Good to hear from you again!

Yeah, I kind of wonder that, too- the Brood at least spoke, even though they were generally just sadistic monsters. I always forget Alien is even older than I thought (the first two movies are seven years apart), so I often thought that the Brood came out FIRST.

-Temptress was the only Brood Mutant with mental powers, using them to enslave Rogue and Psylocke and have them attack Wolverine, who was beaten by Rogue physically and Betsy mentally- he managed to shake off the effect of having a Brood egg implanted in him, and slaughtered her, freeing his teammates. Her high level of power (mostly because Mind Control Always Works in comics, even with Mooks) means that she's PL 9 and quite deadly for it, as she can back it up with melee damage as well.
