Servals, Caracals and Lynx all have very short tails, by nature- in this case, it's possibly just angled to the side or back.

-Distantly-related to the African Golden Cat & Serval, the Caracal is a desert predator. Its stats do not differ greatly from the Lynx- it simply switches out Arctic Adaptations for Desert ones. Their size and stealth make them one of VERY few predators still largely within its range from hundreds of years ago, and is generally allowed to be hunted with no restrictions! Given the fates of most of the cats in Africa, Europe and Asia, that's a big feat.

-Caracals are able to make vast leaps- 15-18 foot jumps have been recorded! Otherwise they are Lynx-like in their stats.

-Most Lynx family members are barely larger than the Wild Cats out there- about 15-35 lbs.

Small Lynxes:
BOBCAT: North America's smallest Lynx, the Bobcat is about twice as large as a domestic cat. They have very spotted coats in grey or brown, and like most Lynx, hunt rabbits above all else. They likely evolved from European Lynx arriving from the Bering Straight Land Bridge 20,000 years ago- a second population formed the Canada Lynx.

IBERIAN LYNX: A small Endangered Lynx known only to small parts of Spain. Only 326 individuals remain, up from 100 only two decades ago. Yellowish or tawny, they're about 15-22 lbs. They mostly eat rabbits, but also chast Deer fawns.

CANADA LYNX: Arriving in North America millennia after the Bobcat, the Canada Lynx is an 11-37 lb. hunter. They almost exclusively hunt and kill the snowshoe hare, which makes up 97% of the diet of some specimens.

-Lynx are a good example of low-level Wild Cats that still have a bit of size to them- they share stats with most of the "mid-size" brethren at PL 5, making them the rough equal of the slightly-larger Wolves (who often break 100 pounds- these cats never do), leaning heavily towards accuracy rather than power. They strike like lightning, hitting from secret locations, and attack with extremely sharp claws before applying a final, lethal bite. The only thing keeping them from higher PLs and greater levels of power is their small size- 50 pounds is generally not enough to threaten a full-size human, though it's more than enough to cause a lot of damage. Despite their size, they can do +2 damage with their claws- a College buddy of mine had a braclet made from the smaller Bobcat's claws in his backpack one day, and I accidentally grabbed hold of it while searching for a schoolbook- hurt like a BITCH.

-The Eurasian Lynx is the only Lynx species that prefer ungulate prey, usually deer and the like- their smaller relatives are rabbit-specialized hunters.

-Like I said, similar stats abound amongst the largest of the "Little Cat" family. There's a few other species of Lynx, and the Bobcat of North America is very similar, just a bit smaller (probably a notch or two weaker & less tough). They're small, but BAD-ASS, Bobcats can hunt and kill DEER and Sheep up to four times their own body weight by themselves!

Total: Abilities: 10 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 14 / Defenses: 12 (57)

Era: Modern
Range: Africa, parts of the Middle East & India.
Stereotypes: Quick to do anything. Generally the nicest of the cats.
Colouring: Tawny yellow with small black spots
Size: Up to 5 feet long (80-160 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or groups of brothers (1-4)
Diet: Antelopes, rabbits
Tactics: Silent stalking, followed by fast charge (given up if prey lasts more than 20 seconds). Chokes or severs the spinal cord.

-Cheetahs are famously the fastest land animal on Earth, able to hit speeds of 62 mph from a starting position, accelerating faster than a RACE CAR in the process! Their slender, wide-chested bodies are idealized for huge speeds, but their stamina is crap- prey nearly always escapes if it can run for more than 10-20 seconds. Its record-breaking speed makes it famous the world over regardless of it's weaknesses (it can't effectively hunt anything larger than the small antelopes- even a Wildebeest could cripple one), and they've been used by nobles for years to aid in hunts, similar to a Greyhound. A peculiar adaptation is to keep their heads perfectly steady when running- when viewed from the front, this creates an unnatural-looking effect, where the animal's head is stationary while the body moves rapidly around it.

-Cheetahs also have to be on the lookout for other predators- as Hyenas, Leopards & Lions can easily overpower them, they are often left vulnerable when exhausted from the chase- many a kill is taken by a larger animal. Their comparative weakness has led to some clever workarounds- it is now very common for groups of brothers to team up against larger prey. One incident that's popular on animal shows featured a trio of brothers making a light chase of an Ostrich- since a fully-grown male Ostrich has nothing to fear from a single Cheetah, it just casually jogged in front of one Cheetah, all "whatever". But then it realized its mistake, as it noticed the other two brothers closing in- in a panic, it was like "SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT" and revved up... but once you've given Cheetahs a slow start, you're done for- he was taken down by all three and slowly strangled to death.

-Cheetahs lose the climbing ability and ferocity of many of their brethren, and focus entirely on bursts of speed (gaining Enhanced Athletics and a Fading Speed ability- taken from Prodigy Duck's build of the same animal, as well as the Stealth boost). They can make an Athletics check to hit 64 mph, but only for short periods, and they have crazy Initiative. Despite this, they're weaker than the other large Cats, being PL 4 all over except for their Dodge, which is enhanced thanks to their natural speed. Its claws aren't nearly as sharp as most large Cats (they're non-retractable so they can grip while running).

Era: Modern
Range: North, Latin & South America
Stereotypes: Unspeaking, implacable predators in North America-based Wilderness Movies.
Colouring: Tawny golden
Size: Up to 6.5 feet long (65-230 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary.
Diet: Deer, Elk, Moose, rabbits, rodents, domesticated animals

-Gotta love the Cougar, the second-largest cat in the Americas. It's range is unbelievably huge, giving it the most names of any single animal (40 in English alone), as nearly every culture than encountered the cat gave it some sort of new name. The Puma, the Cougar, the Mountain Lion- it's all good. They're rarely larger than most average people, but are amazingly talented hunters regardless, taking down huge prey that no human would EVER dare tackle alone. I've seen clips of one of these buggers hunting a Moose, just barrelling out of the underbrush and RAMMING a Moose at full-speed, taking it clean off its feet, something I can't imagine a human being accomplishing. It's one of those little reminders that even the animals at our size level are much stronger and more athletic than we are. It's also one of the very few large cats (though it's not an official "Big Cat" since it cannot roar and is closely related to smaller cats) that is rated as "Least Concern" regarding most of its populated range (some areas still have VERY rare sightings).

-Cougars can be rather notorious in North America- I have friends who work in the more wild areas of Alberta, and they say that despite NEVER having seen one, they know they've probably been stalked by one once or twice (apparently almost all outdoor workers have been followed/stalked at LEAST once). Their stealth means that they can follow and hunt just about anything without being seen. Given that their population remains pretty strong, and that human habitations are encroaching upon their habitat... you've got a problem. Few cats have the opportunity to walk through such large cities, making them a TREMENDOUS potential danger for people, especially small children (Cougars, like most predators, will target kids and women first- but any adult that bends over and thus looks smaller is a target, too)- there are a handful of predatory Cougar-related deaths each year, and they're probably going to get worse- even HUNTING something like this is difficult, despite their tendency to "tree" themselves when threatened (making them easy targets for rifles).

-I think Cougars are very under-represented in the media, though this is largely because it's both much smaller than the Big Cats, and it's coat is nowhere near as awesome. But for a D&D campaign or a super-hero sidekick, I think these would be awesome animal allies. Not so exotic as to be totally bizarre in North American cities, but dangerous enough that it can knock around a dozen thugs.

-Cougars are vicious PL 7 attackers, capable of fending off adult Grizzy Bears, and bringing down BULL MOOSE by themselves. Despite their small size, they are strong as HELL, capable of hauling down large mammals- one frightening story features an injured, malnourished *40-LB* animal attacking a man in his cabin and nearly tearing him apart.
