THE BARON
Played by:
Lance Henriksen
Role: The Kingpin

-The Baron was mentioned repeatedly throughout the first season of Tangled: The Series, but never given a face until Season Two- he was always spoken of in hushed tones- Eugene had earned his enmity for doing something bad to "his stallion", and he was blackmailing Red & Angry into stealing for him. When we finally meet him, we see this enormous figure with a terrifyingly gravelly, serious voice. With an epic calm, he describes the level of his disgust towards Eugene, and we're introduced to what he valued so much- his "stallion" was actually his DAUGHTER, Stalyan.

-And so the Baron poisoned Lance with a deadly Kai spider and forced Eugene to marry Stalyan- Rapunzel and friends stage a breakout and free their friend, infuriating both, but the Baron is bitten by his own spider, with Lance given the only antidote. He reappears much later in Season Three, badly deformed by the spider's venom and seeking revenge. He captures both Eugene and an imposter of his now using the "Flynn Rider" name, but is undone when they team up to stop him.

About the Performer: The Baron's deep, gravelly voice was performed by Lance Henriksen, who'd played Kerchak in Disney's Tarzan and the Grim Reaper in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, proving he always had a remarkable voice.

Stalyan

STALYAN
Played by:
Yvonne Strahovski
Role: Eugene's Ex, The Bad Girl

-ooooooooooh BABY! So the "stallion" Eugene had messed with back in the day, thus earning the enmity of the fearsome Baron, was actually the man's DAUGHTER- given the awkward name of "Stalyan". But what an entrance- Eugene & Lance are tied up, brought before the Baron, and then this tall, graceful, swaggering bad girl comes out stalks down to Eugene, casually slaps him upside the head as she strides by, then takes her place at her father's side. It's the greatest introduction to any antagonist ever and I was immediately in love.

-So Stalyan turns out to be the ex-FIANCEE of one "Flynn Rider", and is furious since he left her at the altar. But still loving him (they'd met as young thieves, and she finds they have SO much in common), she decides that romance can win out, so she & the Baron threaten to murder Lance if Eugene doesn't marry her. Rapunzel is confused and mortified when Eugene is there for the marriage announcement, but a pep-talk from Cass of all people, who always argued with Eugene, pumps her up ("He DOES love you", she asserts), and the gang springs a jailbreak of sorts, messing up the wedding and poisoning the Baron with his own pet spider. Stalyan is furious, and stomps off with her father, trying to find the antidote to the venom.

-Stalyan and the Baron both reappear, but it different episodes- Stalyan shows up again in Season Two, with Eugene and the others jailed, required to steal the "Eye of Pincosta". Stalyan turns out to have access to it, and she & Rapunzel agree to help free Eugene... but Stalyan instead betrays her, taking the Jewel for herself to win back Eugene again. However, their time together had warmed her evil, dark, sexy heart, and Stalyan changes her minda fter finding a lovely letter Raps wrote for her, encouraging her to find the good in everyone. So make a "Face Turn", Stalyan saves Rapunzel in a wrestling match (in which Raps had to wear an adorable green luchadora mask) and the two part as friends, Stalyan finally accepting that Rapunzel & Eugene are the "One True Ship". In the Series Finale, Stalyan is seen in a huge mass of the show's supporting characters, arm in arm with Brock Thunderstrike- a Flynn lookalike who was encountered in the Baron's return episode- a writer for the show and the show itself have both confirmed that she "has a type" and the two are now together.

About the Performer: Stalyan is played by Yvonne Strahovski in a good casting gag- Yvonne was the partner, girlfriend, and later wife of Zachary Levi's character in Chuck. Levi, of course, played Eugene in Tangled.

Complications:
Relationship (Quinn- Father)- Varian's father is a wise, practical man who hates Varian's reckless experimenting.
Motivation ("I Will Make You Proud")- Varian is desperate to make his stern, lecturing father proud of him.
Enemy (Rapunzel & The Gang)- Though he's initially a good friend to the gang (even crushing on Cassandra), he later feels betrayed and abandoned when he seeks out their aide. He returns with a vengeance, doing whatever he can (kidnapping, extortion, attempted murder) in order to break the Black Rocks.

Total: Abilities: 22 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 26 / Defenses: 12 (77)

-The Alchemist seemed like a pretty innocuous version of the whole "Building the Supporting Cast" thing you have to do when adapting a movie into a TV series- as Tangled had only "witches and magic hair" in terms of supernatural stuff, there was also a need to show a bit more of that aspect. And so we had The Alchemist- actually a young boy whose experiements often went a bit out of control. Smart and eager to please, to the point where his stuff got a bit destructive, he was a solid supporting cast member. He even had a crush on grumpy Cassandra, calling her "milady" and fawning over her. It was... cute.
-This is what made it sting when he slowly TURNED EVIL. See, his lecturing father had warned him against messing with the Black Rocks using his alchemy, and he ended up setting off a chain reaction that froze his father in stone. Desperate and afraid, he begged for help from Rapunzel... who had to turn him away, as her kingdom was in disarray and she couldn't abandon them in their time of need. Varian, in a chilling moment, simply said that "They... will... PAY". And so he kidnaps various people, turns his beloved pet into a monster using his alchemy, and nearly destroys all of Corona, all in a misguided attempt at making his father proud of him, and proving that his inventions AREN'T going to just get everyone killed.

-Varian reappears in the third and final season of the show, having been broken out of prison by some goons who invade Corona. Helping take over the kingdom, he's opposed by a newly-returned Rapunzel and crew... and Varian falters, being disrespected by his new allies (he's now all of a sudden kind of clumsy and noncommital) and being unwilling to simply murder everyone. Rapunzel finally gets through to him, and he undergoes a pretty quick Face Turn, using his inventions to stop the other bad guys. He's forgiven promptly (and a bit too quickly for my tastes, but I guess they had TWO "Friend Betrayals" to deal with by this point), and from then on appears as an aide character. When Cassandra returns, it's VARIAN who confronts her, begging her not to cross over to the dark side so badly ("Becoming the VILLAIN isn't the answer!"). He ultimately fails- he's wrapped up by her Create power and imprisoned, while she finally "crosses the line". Later, he builds a device that can hopefully destroy her black rocks, but this proves dangerous when Zhan Tiri sneaks in and sets his weapon off while Raps is trying to talk Cass down- the attack infuriates Cassandra, who redoubles her efforts and gives up any hope of reconciliation.

-Varian's stats are unimpressive physically (he is TINY, even for a fourteen year old), but his potions are quite potent. His inventions grow in power, too- going from barely-working machines into GIANT MECHS (which, honestly, don't really fit the Tangled motif and seem rather out of place in the show). So he's PL 9, but weak defensively, requiring a lot of Mooks and back-up in order to use his inventions properly.

About the Performer: Jeremy Jordan KILLS IT as Varian- he's initially pretty forgettable as the "Likeable Nerd" kid, but when he turns EVIL, you actually sort of buy his obsessive desire for redemption. He's actually in his early thirties, and this role is basically one of Disney's trademark "Thank You"s for a past performance, as he was the male lead in the successful musical version of Newsies. Similar roles went to Lance, and in the '90s, we saw Susan Egan get the Megara role after playing Belle on Broadway.

The Brotherhood

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THE BROTHERHOOD:
-The Brotherhood appear as a trio of characters in the second season, entitled Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, and have mysterious purposes at first. The first is Quirin, Varian's stern, serious father- a man who's shown in the backstory as begging King Frederic not to destroy the Sundrop Flower to save his dying wife, fearing the repercussions. He's frozen in amber by one of his son's concoctions and this helps turn Varian on a dark path. Adira is the second, appearing as an extremely tall, bad-ass warrior woman (AND YET I STILL FIND CASS TO BE BEST GIRL) who acts as an advisor to the hero's group, but disappears frequently, likely owing to her power level being rather extreme. Hector the Beast-Rider appears next, and is strongly antagonistic. And finally we meet their leader, King Edmund, a crazed, over-eager weirdo... who is Eugene's FATHER!

-The Brotherhood's initial purpose is to guard the Moonstone and prevent anyone from getting a hold of it. However, Adira seems to lead "The Sundrop" (Rapunzel) and her friends towards it, while the other two oppose them. In the third season, they're largely cast aside as the new story arc of Cass and the "Mysterious Little Girl" takes precedence- Edmund appears in a comedic role a few times, and Quirin is rescued by Rapunzel's newer magical powers, but Adira & Hector are non-speaking, mind-controlled minions in the final episodes, and largely don't matter.

-All three Brotherhood members are actually extremely O.P. for this universe- they are lightning-fast, incredibly strong and very lethal. Even Cass, the best fighter of the crew, has no chance against them, leading to some pretty awesome moments.

Sword +11 (+7 Damage, DC 22)

Defenses:
Dodge +12 (DC 22), Parry +13 (DC 23), Toughness +5, Fortitude +7, Will +7

Complications:
Responsibility (Guarding the Moonstone)- The Brotherhood have been charged with preventing anyone from finding the Moonstone. However, Adira has gone against this, realizing that the Black Rocks are searching for Rapunzel.

Total: Abilities: 74 / Skills: 50--25 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 9 / Defenses: 14 (136)

-Adira debuts with all the trappings of a "Mary Sue"- impressively arrogant, she smugly disarms the entire heroic party, slices Black Rocks with her sword (they had previously been invincible), parries Cassandra's best sword shots with her FEET, and acts high and mighty and like a total know-it-all. With a lot of sarcasm and snarkiness, she finally reveals her purpose- to steer Rapunzel and her group towards their destiny. She aids the party a couple of times, including leading them through a magical swamp (humiliating Eugene in the process, as he fancied himself an outdoorsman). Thankfully, the writers seem to be aware of how annoying her "know-it-all" traits would be, and so she's treated as annoying by both Cass & Eugene (though Lance is in love with her for being so tall and strong- WHAT A WEIRDO), engages in some genuinely heartfelt advice (pointing out that Eugene, who she calls "fish-skin", is the glue that binds the group together- "fish-skin" being a good binding element, I guess), and spends many episodes away from the group.

-Adira watches over the group from afar as they slowly make their way to the Dark Kingdom, but she is ultimately brought low by Cassandra's newfound Moonstone-given might. Cass steals her "Black Rock Sword" and carries on with it, and Adira ceases to matter, to the point where I wonder if her Voice Actress quit.

-Adira is a fairly well-balanced PL 9, which puts her way above Rapunzel & Co., though she only gets into a couple of real fights over the course of the series. She more or less effortlessly beats the PL 7 Cass, dodging sword-slices with the flat of her foot, but later on, the PL 10 Moonstone-powered Cass one-shots her- the price of being a Dex-Monkey against and Area Attacker.

About the Performer: Kelly Hu is one of a handful of "Popular Asian Starlets of the Moment", being the former beauty queen who was in The Scorpion King and X2 (as Lady Deathstrike) before largely disappearing from movies, as is common for most non-white actresses (or almost any woman over a certain age in Hollywood). Despite still looking exactly the same for like twenty years, roles seem to have dried up and put her in VOICE ACTING of all things (looking like THAT, she doesn't even earn camera time? Well, VAs have an unusually large amount of stunning women women to their credit, so she's in good company). She was Karai in the first Nickelodeon TMNT series.

Complications:
Responsibility (Guarding the Moonstone)- The Brotherhood have been charged with preventing anyone from finding the Moonstone. Hector is devoted to killing anyone who comes close, even turning on his Brotherhood ally, Adira, though he quietly regrets it ("I'm sorry, sister").

Total: Abilities: 74 / Skills: 60--60 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 14 (132)

-Hector debuts with a lot of fanfare near the end of the second season of the show. He's a member of Adira's Brotherhood, and appears trying to stop the gang from ever finding the Dark Kingdom and the Moonstone. But he cuts a pretty unique figure- I've never seen someone like this before! He's somehow equal parts sinister, bad-ass, imposing and dangerous, yet comes off very effeminate and "queer-coded" at the same time- feminine stances and a voice that almost reads like "grown man mimicking a bitchy woman". And he's very slender despite being so menacing, and he has a pair of giant wolverines (or possibly binturongs) and a rhinoceros as Animal Allies! Like, when have you ever seen anything like this?

-Hector is described as the most ruthless and sadistic of the Brotherhood by Adira, and he tries to murder the gang for seeking out the Dark Kingdom. He lashes out with his pets, beats the entire gang and nearly kills Rapunzel, is nearly killed when Cassandra throws him off of a platform, and finally takes a magical spear out of the "Great Tree", which possesses him. Rapunzel has to unleash her "Wither and Decay" powers to stop him, at which point he's largely done as a threat, appearing later as a controlled minion.

-Hector is of equal power to Adira, having successfully knocked her out among the entire group. With his animal allies, he's one of the biggest direct threats in the series.

About the Performer: Kim Coates is a theatrical performer who's also performed in various TV shows in side roles. He most recently appeared on Bad Blood.

Yeah, Hector's pretty damn great. Mainly because he's like a Genre Refugee from a far darker, gritter fanservice-heavy fantasy or historical drama show like Game of Thrones or The Witcher or Vikings or etc.

Also the Ink-Suit Actor aspect which is a trope I'm honestly quite the fan of.

King Edmund

KING EDMUND
Played by:
BRUCE CAMPBELL!?!
Role: Mad King, Long-Lost Father (to Eugene)

-A big revelation from the second season of Tangled: The Series was that Eugene's long-lost father was actually a KING- King Edmund of the Dark Kingdom, which was destroyed by the power of the Moonstone. When Edmund had tried to break it, the thing killed his wife and maimed one of his arms. Pledging his Brotherhood to keep it out of the hands of humans, Edmund sat in the castle by himself, growing quite mad. He appears on the scene as a bit of a goofball, wanting to be buddy-buddy with his adult son, despite Eugene being kind of annoyed and disturbed by the attention. He at first tries to keep the gang from the Moonstone, and wrecks house (along with his ancestors' ghosts) when they arrive, but Eugene convinces him to have faith in Rapunzel, and so he leads them to the room where the stone sits. And Cassandra betrays everyone and swipes it.

-He appears in only a handful of later episodes, annoying Eugene yet again. He gifts him the "family sash", but then arranges to have it stolen, so that he & Eugene can spend some time together. Annoyed, Eugene rebuffs him, but eventually saves him from the Stabbington Brothers, and discovers that he'd spent the years they were apart keeping tabs on him, and having his pet ravens (also nutjobs) keep his old toys. I never found the character THAT funny or charming, but he was okay. But I never once realized that he was voiced by...

About the Performer: Okay, BRUCE CAMPBELL? Well that one surprised me. It's been a while since I've heard his voice, but I definitely hear it in my head when remembering the character, now. Bruce is mostly known as a "cult actor" these days (ie. very cheesy, but in a self-aware, fun way that makes him a joy to watch and listen to). He made his break in the Evil Dead franchise, morphing the "Everday Guy" Ash into a wild, over-the-top superhero quoted to this day by wannabe bad-asses the world over. He's been in all sorts of stuff, big and small, usually in big roles in small stuff and small roles in big stuff (Spider-Man 1& 2).

Jab, your comments on some of the performers are funny when you miss some bigger things. For example, I think Lance Henrikson is probably better known as the star of the 90s show Millennium, or even as the android from the Alien franchise.

Kelly Hu had recurring roles in both The Vampire Diaries and later Arrow. A LOT of "genre actors" show up on the CW sooner or later.

I’ve never heard of Millennium, lol. And I didn’t realize he was the android- I missed that bit skimming Wikipedia. I’d never heard of the actor before.

I usually skip CW stuff as I also don’t watch those- they honestly come off as a place for dying careers to settle.

I think it's more accurate to say the CW is where young actors go to potentially get a career with nerd cred. I definitely don't think it's a place where flagging careers settle.

Enemy (Lord Demanitus)- Zhan Tiri & Demanitus were allies years ago, but when she turned evil, they became arch-foes. Zhan Tiri was banished to an alternate dimension for centuries, while Demanitus took the form of a monkey waiting for the day he could aid others to defeat her once and for all.

Total: Abilities: 72 / Skills: 56--28 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 154 / Defenses: 13 (236)

-Zhan Tiri is an ancient demon mentioned so frequently in Tanged: The Series that I should not have been surprised by her appearance as the Final Boss in the Series Finale, but it'd been a long time since she was mentioned, so there I was. "Wait- 'Zhan Tiri'? Was that that demon mentioned in the first season?". But yeah- Zhan Tiri was mentioned here and there as an ancient creature- Rapunzel managed to stop a bunch of mind-controlled artists from literally painting her into our reality, the legendary wizard Demanitus had stopped her centuries ago, and more. We even learned that she was the mentor to several of the show's villains, plus Gothel herself! And then she appears as this Evil British Little Girl, manipulating Cassandra into betraying her friends and taking the Moonstone. And then lies to her repeatedly, rewriting old stories to make it seem like Mother Gothel loved her and only abandoned her for Rapunzel (Gothel actually found Cass tiresome even as an innocent child), then setting off Varian's Alchemy-Gun to make it seem like Cass had been betrayed by her truce-seeking friends.

-Ultimately, Cass uncovers the lies, but the damage to the Moonstone leaves her powerless, and Zhan Tiri enters our world as a massive, monstrous demon, gaining the power of both Sundrop & Moonstone and using the "Wither and Decay" spell over all of Corona. And so we get our grand finale, as the two friends make up and fight together, facing down the demon. They're pretty badly beaten, but Raps uses her famous FRYING PAN, bookending the series by KO-ing Zhan Tiri just long enough to figure out an old riddle and slam the Sundrop and Moonstone together- the resulting conflagration wiping out Zhan Tiri once and for all.

-Zhan Tiri is a Shapeshifter in her basic form, but using the power of the Moonstone & Sundrop, she can wipe out an entire kingdom with enhanced versions of the girls' powers, taking a monstrous, slithering form as she does so. Overall, she becomes a PL 11 monster that can shrug off the attacks of the other characters easily, wipe out dozens in a huge area, and more- this all makes the Sundrop & Moonstone Removable Devices, while also giving them an assortment of powers that have "Source- Other Stone" which is pretty cheesy but is... well, how those powers work.

Okay, so everyone who’s told me they’re greatly anticipating the Image Comics builds are about to have their patience rewarded!

In five days, because I’m doing World Heroes builds first :P!

... What? I plan these out months in advance! You should have been earlier with your requests!

And by thunder, you will respond to the eventual, much requested Image builds with sweet, sustaining comments. Or I’ll cry!

World Heroes

WORLD HEROES:

-SNK are known among fight fans as one of the top companies in the history of the Fighting Game genre, but World Heroes is pretty much the bastard child of their franchises (it was made by ADK, not the main company, which explains that a bit). There are worse one-shots and little-known side games (Aggressors of Dark Kombat, for example), but the four games comprising the "World Heroes Universe" stand out as being beneath SNK's notice for the most part. The first game came out in 1992, hot on the tails of the success of Street Fighter II, and shows it- the game's fairly derivative on many levels, though it maintains a unique control system at first (you press the buttons harder to get more damaging attacks- something dropped from some sequels). The main heroes Hanzo & Fuuma are obvious Ryu/Ken Clones, right down to the Head-Swapping, Shotoclone Movesets, and rival natures- in addition, most guys fit the standard archetypes already established by Capcom, and the engine is pretty familiar.

But the game kinda stood out for its goofy, insane roster. This kind of comedy-tinged game is more popular in Japan for the most part, as over here, it kinda prevents anyone from taking the game too seriously. I mean, that's the POINT, but Fighting Game fans can be a particular bunch- I know very few gamers who like it when too many characters in the Fighting Game are silly, and this one is just NUTTY... a South Islander Witch Doctor, a Flamingly Gay Mad Monk of Russia, Joan of Arc and HULK HOGAN? When you add the series' goofiness with the power of Fatal Fury, or the epic King of Fighters series, which started in 1994 (when the World Heroes sequels were being released), it just falls short.

To be fair, the games aren't really considered BAD. Some gamers have gone back and found a fairly well-done engine with quality gaming to be had- the games are just silly and stupid, with some terrible designs. As Fighting Games live and die on their character designs, this is catastrophic! The main heroes are a perfect example- Hanzo & Fuuma are ninjas, but look MUCH worse than Samurai Shodown's Hanzo (same basis as WH's) or Galford. The graphics are big and pretty for the era (beyond SNES graphical power, even), but they're so dull and cartoonishly-colored that they come across a bit flat (sorta like Art of Fighting does versus Fatal Fury). Erick the Red and Julius Carn just look like generic Mooks- not elite Generals and selectable fighters. Janne D'Arc is a horribly-boring design compared to Shodown's Charlotte, who uses the same design type (hot blonde chick in armour with a sword). Ryoko is as generic as can be, as is Shura (back when dime-a-dozen Muay Thai fighters were uncommon, but he's still "Just Some Guy In Muay Thai Gear"). Hell, their best and most memorable designs are just swiped from influential manga like Fist of the North Star and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure! And like I said, in this genre, Character Design is possibly the MOST important aspect after the overall Gaming System.

The most damning thing I can think of to say about the character designs in the series is this: Even the best ones pretty much look like a generic Mook Design for the run-of-the-mill henchman you regularly beat the crap out of in Beat 'Em Ups or Action Games. Seriously, these guys should normally be seen with fifteen other dudes who look just like them, working for a different-coloured dude who HIMSELF works for another, much better-designed fellow who leads the whole group. THAT is how dull these designs are!

As such, the World Heroes legacy is a minor one. It shares a link with Samurai Shodown in that it was an ongoing SNK series outside of the main continuity of King of Fighters, but it lacks the latter's fame or respect. The graphics would be done a thousand times better even a couple years later, the boring designs held it back, and it's goofiness left SNK forgetting it for years, as Shodown got a ton of sequels, and even some appearances in the Capcom (vs) SNK games. Hell, LAST BLADE got into some of those, and it's a much newer game series! World Heroes didn't get any cred until SNK Fighting Coliseum came out in the 2000s, featuring re-done sprites of Hanzo, Fuuma, Mudman and Neo-Dio. Its legacy is minor, but it's still looking like some inventive fun.

World Heroes consists of four main games, with an Anthology collection being released in 2008 for the PS2. It went, in order: World Heroes (1992), World Heroes 2 (1993), World Heroes 2 Jet (1994), and World Heroes Perfect (1995). The first sequel added EIGHT new characters to the cast of nine, while Jet (basically an additional upgrade to WH2) added two new characters and a boss. Perfect was the final, presumptuously-named sequel (gamers in modern times would joke that it should be renamed World Heroes Adequate), adding a Boss and a Secret Character (back when those were all the rage).

Humorously enough, I actually built these guys ages before most of the famous SNK characters. Why? Well, I was gonna get to SNK as a whole, but these guys are just so much fun to make fun of and notice stuff about, and they're all pretty simple builds anyhow. As a bunch of elite fighters throughout time, they're pretty good, but I figure they're much weaker than Capcom fighters as a whole, so they'll almost all balance out to PL 8. They're just too silly to match the Ryus & Chun-Lis of the world.
