An early appearance by the Manticore in fantasy fiction was in E.R.Eddison's 'The Worm Ouroboros' in 1922. The heroes of the story fight one while climbing a mountain.

-The Chimera is classically Greek- a messed-up mish-mash of whatever creatures they thought were cool. And so we get the mighty, epic LION merged with the lethal, venomous Snake. And to COMPLETE the vicious ensemble, we add in the... Goat? Goats? Really? Maybe the Greeks REALLY hated being bit by the little bastards. What's funny is that we'd barely recognize the actual early myths, which was a Lion's body with a Goat head sticking out the middle of the back, and the tail WAS a Snake. Really goofy-looking, but kind of creepy in an odd way. Modern takes on the creature tend to have the Lion & Goat heads coming out of the front, and the Snake has often been replaced with a Dragon. The Shining Force series of video games feature a Lion/Goat combo with a Snake for a tail, while Dungeons & Dragons features a three-head frontage of Lion, Goat & Dragon (colour depends). And oh yeah, most modern takes have wings, which is totally different from the Greek version.

-So what I went with here was a Lion/Goat/Snake combo, using a Venomous bite in addition to a Split multi-attack that offers Radius Sight (since it's got so many heads), wings and a fifteen-foot length. I've never quite felt comfortable with D&D's Chimera, which was not any bigger than a Lion. I figure something like this should be HUGE, and capable of kicking some major ass. It's smaller than a Manticore, but keeps the same PL, and is quite accurate overall.

Total: Abilities: 30 / Skills: 40--20 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 23 / Defenses: 15 (101)

Era: Fantasy Worlds
Range: Mountainous areas, plains
Stereotypes: Same as Base Cat.

Size: Up to 15 feet long (2,000-4,000 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs
Diet: Various mammals, humans
Tactics: Silent Stalking, followed by lethal head & neck bites.

-A Giant Cat is basically a Chimera, minus the Head Stuff, plus the Coat of whatever cat you're using as the base animal. They don't show up too much in stories (D&D uses Dire Boars, Bears and Wolves far more often than Dire Cats), unless your heroes shrink down- at which point, a regular Cat becomes this.

And that finally does it for the cats! That was a long set, and there's only a few more families of Carnivora to get to! I post these only one at a time, every 1-2 days, since I technically had them done before but also keep finding new ways to spend more time on them (*shudder* EVERY CAT EVER- never mind all the different kinds of Pinnipeds), but I'm still a bit ahead. After the Carnivores are done I'll probably move on to Rodents and Hares.

Hyaenidae

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

HYAENIDAE FAMILY (Order- Carnivora):
-Hyenas are a weird-ass family, I tell you what. Truly disgusting-looking animals, the females are so bizarre that their enlarged clitori were mistaken for PENISES by scientists of all races for centuries- even primitive African tribes thought the things were stupid, greedy hermaphrodites, and Middle Eastern mythos declares them as icons of stupidity and greed- this is partially because many of them were known for digging up human corpses to eat. The females have this long fleshy tube that... well, they can give BIRTH through it (imagine the most disgusting bubble-blowing you've ever seen- birthing babies actually RUPTURES the female's clitoris, requiring weeks to heal). This is due to an extreme amount of testosterone in the females, making them one of the very few mammalian species where the ladies call all the shots, and dominate the groups by bullying the smaller, weaker males.

-Oh sure, biologists will tell you that they are NOT the dishonorable bastardly hunter we've considered them for generations, that steal Lion kills and scavenge like nuts. In actuality, it's the other way around- Lions often steal HYENA kills, basically bullying the poor bastards out of their hard-earned meals- Spotted Hyenas will kill about 95% of their own prey. But man, I still can't get into these things. They're just so big, ugly and creepy- those laughs of various types (the quick laughter is actually a terrified reaction while fleeing) are horrifying to hear, and they lack the majesty of the Big Cats OR the Wild Dogs of the world. Their preferred killing method is not strangulation or brain-crushing, like the Big Cats- instead, they disembowel their prey and devour them alive. Oh, and they're prone to digging up human graves to feast on the corpses. In short: UP YOURS, Hyenas!

-The Spotted Hyena is the largest of the Family by far, weighing about as much as most people (155 lbs.). Two smaller species, the Brown Hyena (looking like shaggy dogs), and the Striped Hyena (skinny 88-pounders). There's also the very small 20-pound Aardwolf (no relation to the lame Marvel hero of the same name), which looks kinda like some weird Hyena/Dik-Dik hybrid. Despite often being compared to dogs, Hyenas are in the "Feliform" section of Carnivora, not the Caniforma side (with Bears and Pinnipeds). Their closest relatives are the Viverrids, having evolved from them most recently.

Danger To Humans: Very high. Hyenas, like most mammalian predators, rarely try to interact with humans, though Man-Eaters are well-known to exist. Spotted Hyenas, the largest kind, are obviously the worst offenders, with a single pair killing 27 people in 1972 Malawi. As many Hyenas now inhabit urban zones in Ethiopia, they are becoming a public nuisance and danger- they will readily attack old people and children.

In my Buffy game I have a biker gang of Were-Hyenas that pretty much act as the main antagonists for half the time doing things like this. They are wonderful to hate on.

Tactics: Licks up bugs.

-The obscure Aardwolf is the smallest of the Hyenas (more distant than the others), a 20-lb. termite-eating Hyaenid who can eat 250,000 of the little buggers in a single night with their elongated tongues! Distantly related to regular Hyenas, they only superficially resemble them, and have few of the same habits- they are mostly found in pairs and their young, for example. They're also the namer of one of Marvel's more-obscure villains, a Night Thrasher enemy who... really just seems more Wolf-like. I bet he just wanted to be first in the Marvel Alphabet. These guys are basically equivalent to Foxes, and even regular Dogs are known to kill them- they aren't good fighters, nor do they hunt and kill any manner of large prey.

-Aardwolves are neither large nor very strong, and would be easily beaten by most Dogs, Wolves, or Hyenas.

Kind of a cute, quizzacle face. Such tiny paws! I wonder if they use them to dig up the termite nests and/or scoop up the lil' buggers?

According to Wikipedia, they just lick them off the ground!:

The aardwolf feeds primarily on termites and more specifically on Trinervitermes.[9] This genus of termites has different species throughout the aardwolf's range. In East Africa, they eat Trinervitermes bettonianus, in central Africa, they eat Trinervitermes rhodesiensis, and in southern Africa, they eat T. trinervoides.[2][9][22] Their technique consists of licking them off the ground as opposed to the aardvark, which digs into the mound.[18] They locate their food by sound and also from the scent secreted by the soldier termites.[22] An aardwolf may consume up to 250,000 termites per night using its long, sticky tongue.[9][8]

They do not destroy the termite mound or consume the entire colony, thus ensuring that the termites can rebuild and provide a continuous supply of food. They often memorize the location of such nests and return to them every few months.[21] During certain seasonal events, such as the onset of the rainy season and the cold of midwinter, the primary termites become scarce, so the need for other foods becomes pronounced. During these times, the southern aardwolf will seek out Hodotermes mossambicus, a type of harvester termite[22] active in the afternoon, which explains some of their diurnal behavior in the winter.[9] The eastern aardwolf, during the rainy season, subsists on termites from the genera Odontotermes and Macrotermes.[9] They are also known to feed on other insects, larvae, eggs, and, some sources say, occasionally small mammals and birds, but these constitute a very small percentage of their total diet.[22]

Encounter Groups: Solitary or breeding pairs.
Diet: Small mammals, carrion, fruits, fungi.
Tactics: Intimidate away successful hunters; attack the young of larger animals.

-Brown Hyenas are shaggy, brown-colored Heynas native to the southern portion of Africa, and is the rarest of the species. Like Striped Hyenas, males and females look pretty much alike. The mated pair breeds, but other females are allowed to mate with nomadic males. They are poor hunters, eating a lot of insect or plant-based prey, and are usually scavengers when they eat meat. Very aggressive, they will charge at even Leopards, treeing them and intimidating them away (an injured cat is helpless, and so even powerful Big Cats like these will try to avoid injury).

-Much less famous than its larger relative, the Striped Hyena is basically a smaller version of the Spotted one, sporting smaller heads and more doglike proportions. Solitary creatures, they live in more Arabic regions than the Spotted, and the females don't have the giant Super-Clitorises, either. They are also primarily scavengers, earning the reputation than their larger relatives somewhat-unjustly received (in fact, it may be part of the confusion). They've been known to see off stuff like Wolves (often SEVERAL of them) and Leopards in order to get their kills, though full-on brawls with other predators are rare.

-Also, they scent-mark their territory using a paste from their anal glands called "Hyena Butter". You're welcome for that image.

-I was gonna go with PL 3, but apparently these things are QUITE bad-ass, and more than a little bit scary, even compared to the larger predators around them (including Gray Wolves, Leopards and Tigers). Children and smaller adults have also been killed by them in India. Of comparable size is the Brown Hyena of Southern Africa.

There's a good reason The Lion King, Batman: The Animated Series and more uses them as the token "Evil" animal that is somehow nastier than any OTHER Carnivore they could have used. They make excellent Sidekicks or Minions to truly sick villains, attacking and biting anyone they come across. And a group of fifty is definitely something to be afraid of. Hyenas are actually efficient, capable hunters, often bringing down vulnerable animals through teamwork and endurance, resulting in LIONS bullying them away from their hard-earned kills. Lions & Hyenas are ancient enemies- they will readily kill each others' young, KillSteal worse than the lowliest Internet Trolls, and engage in frequent brawls. If the numbers are anywhere close to even, the Lions will win; if the Hyenas outnumber their foe (the usual ratio is 4:1 if they hope to win), they may harass them away, even succeeding in attacks. The big difference-maker tends to be Male Lions- while Lionesses are dangerous to Hyenas, a big male could kill one in moments.

-For stats, they share a lot with the Wolf build, but focus more on damage by a single notch. They're pretty big and tough, and their bites are strong enough to devour even the BONES of their victims- rating as more powerful than a Leopard's, and being more bone-crushing than even most BEARS. But, like the Wolves, they falter one-on-one to any of the Big Cats, and are best left to teamwork tactics. And they're famous for tearing open the stomachs of Wildebeests and consuming them while they're alive, the animals' pained roars ringing across the Savannah. Because nature isn't totally horrifying or anything. Common prey are the Wildebeest and the Zebra, though anything will do.
