LOL now how did I know the braids would be a different length and position in every picture?

BATTLESTONE (John Stone)
Created By:
Rob Liefeld
First Appearance: Youngblood #1 (April 1992)
Role: Anti-Hero, Unskilled Leader, Undead Super-Commando, Edgelord
Marvel Character Most Ripped Off: Cable (Shitty attitude; anti-government team leader; white/grey hair; ageless sorta-mutant)
'90s Ratio: 9/10 (long braids; shitty attitude; aggressive personality; ageless; banded metal on his... cock?)
Group Affiliations: Youngblood, Brigade, Knightstrike
PL 8 (101)
STRENGTH
7 STAMINA 7 AGILITY 4
FIGHTING 9 DEXTERITY 4
INTELLIGENCE 2 AWARENESS 0 PRESENCE 0

Skills:
Athletics 3 (+10)
Deception 5 (+5)
Expertise (Government Agent) 4 (+6)
Intimidation 8 (+8)
Perception 6 (+6)
Stealth 2 (+3)

Advantages:
All-Out Attack, Fearless, Improved Critical (Unarmed), Power Attack, Ranged Attack 6, Startle, Takedown 2

Powers:
"Rob Liefeld Character"
Enhanced Skills 3: Stealth 3 (+8) (Flaws: Limited to Feet) [1]
Features 1: Braids Appear A Different Length Each Time They're Seen [1]

Offense:
Unarmed +9 (+7 Damage, DC 22)
Initiative +4

Defenses:
Dodge +9 (DC 19), Parry +9 (DC 19), Toughness +7, Fortitude +9, Will +5

Complications:
Motivation (Being Extreme and Looking Cool)
Responsibility ("Real Man")- Poisoned by a toxic upbringing by his alpha-male father, Battlestone has forged his entire life by being the most uncompromising, unfeeling, vicious, strong, tough, grizzled, bad-ass man possible. This makes him shockingly aggressive and stupidly destructive in battle.
Enemy (Cabbot Stone- Brother)- Cabbot was frequently beaten by John when they were boys, under their father's orders. Cabbot was thought killed years ago, but returned with a grudge.
Enemy (Quantum- Father)- The Stone boys' father is an aggressive, Mutant Suprema-- NU-GENE Supremacist, and has opposed Battlestone a few times.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 2 / Defenses: 12 (101)

-The central character of the Brigade series is unquestionably Battlestone, who quite possibly best represents the true nature of an Image character more than any other. No, not the whole "Rips off an X-Men character" thing, nor the "Titty Costume" thing: To me, what best exemplifies Image Comics is the whole "BAD ATTITUDE" thing. And Battlestone, who appears aggressive, grimacing and mean in every single picture, seems to seep that shitty "Edgelord" attitude from every pore of his being. His appearance screams Liefeld, too- though he lacks the ubiquitous pouches in most pictures, he's got those weird-ass "Liefeldian Braids" that pop up on a few bad-ass male charaters of his- for whatever reason, Rob liked to draw these weird, skinny braids on his heroes. Braids that would shift in length and thickness from panel to panel. But by god, he loved braids.

-His violent temperament was probably forged by his father, who forced Battlestone & Cabbot to engage in physical violence from a young age, in part to raise "real men". Both Stone boys were "Nu-Gene" bearers- similar to, yet legally-distinct from, mutants. Living for decades without aging much, he fought in World War II (this is something VERY COMMON to Image characters- many of them copy Wolverine so directly that they're also ageless World War II veterans) alongside various now-aged Image heroes, then became a government wetworks agent, becoming more psychopathic with each passing decade (SEE? IMAGE COMICS!!). Finally, he was turned on by his teammate Dutch, who was a Cybernet operative- Stone's corpse was resurrected via the "Born Again" project, making him a pasty, goulish warrior.

-Battlestone thus ended up the original leader of the government group Youngblood, but was fired after a mission got some members killed- two members who hated him died on a mission in Iraq, and another blamed Stone, thinking he sent them to their deaths on purpose (they were blown up by booby-traps)- during a brawl, Stone punched the man, killing him, too. Diehard beat Stone to a pulp, while Chapel had him arrested. He was court-martialed and quickly let disappear, and of course promptly formed his OWN strike force, named "Brigade"- gathering some old associates, they went on their way as a clandestine group, then decided to go more public as mercenaries.

-When Boone betrayed the team to his government bosses by publishing an expose about them (it was written by Thermal, who had chosen not to do so), Battlestone naturally attacked him, the two men seeming to perish in an explosion. Battlestone was taken away by Boone and brainwashed into being a loyal puppet. He thus headed a Youngblood team alongside Diehard, Vogue, Cougar and Combat, and led them against his original squad (now very different, as most members had since been killed). He took orders from a guy named "Lord Dredd", and made to head one of a few Youngblood teams, seemingly getting a new personality- more calm, collected and professional. Given how he was NEVER SHOWN RECOVERING, it seems very clear to me that Rob had simply decided that "Brigade sucks and the book doesn't sell; I'm just gonna bring the character I like to Youngblood" and that was that, explaining away the new personality and never focusing on the plot thread at all.

-Battlestone is more or less a savage, uncompromising, PL 8 Scrapper build- fearless and tough, but a low-end superhuman all the same. Despite being leader, he has barely any PRE score and no Leadership-related Advantages, largely because he's a giant, aggressive idiot whose entire strategy is "Hit 'Em Hard!".

I don't remember ever even seeing any of the Brigade books in a comic shop. I'm sure they were there, but most Image super-team books of the time were just so much alike they kind of blended together...so the really short-lived ones totally faded from my mind.

Alan Moore's Youngblood was just kind of odd. I mean, it seemed as if Moore couldn't decide whether he wanted to explore Silver Age type ideas in a modern context, or just do a dry parody of them, or go with his usual (by that point overdone) meta-textual stuff. So you get a cornball SA Supergirl knock-off, a Robin clone who changed into a goth/rave kid, a Kid Flash expy who...was just sort of there, Shaft the Arsenal/Speedy who was still being written as a 90s jerk, and then Big Brother and Johnny Panic, who really didn't fit with the rest at all. Along with the goofy Sandman ersatz. I'm not sure what he wanted to do with the series at all. I guess they were supposed to be archetypes of different periods of comic history, except Moore just did thrown-together caricatures instead?

All my best.

-Boone is one of the more hopelessly-generic members of any Image superhero team- while rip-offs of popular Marvel characters were a dime a dozen, most at least chose X-MEN to swipe. Boone was instead a "Generic Gun Guy" making snappy one-liners and shooting guns every which-way. Boone is apparently a glory-hound and a total mercenary, doing whatever for money.

-Boone was one of the first recruits of Battlestone, along with Kayo & Lethal as part of a mercenary squad- they were all fired when they failed in a mission to score a Kherubim "Orb of Power". Battlestone later formed Brigade, but when several members died or were captured, he re-hired Boone, who seemed to loyally join up. He was one of the few members who stuck around after that, seemingly just for the paycheck. Eventually, however, he was contacted by I/O- one of Image's clandestine government organizations, and they bribed/convinced him to switch sides, and turn on Brigade. Finding an expose Thermal had written about them but not published, he revealed it to the world. An enraged Battlestone attacked him, and the two seemed to die in an explosion- Boone revealed that he'd set it deliberately, and carried Battlestone back to his bosses, who brainwashed the Brigade leader. Battlestone went on to appear frequently in Youngblood thereafter, while Boone was simply... never seen again? Yeah, Liefeld was never one for careful record-keeping or sensible plot progression.

And number... I'm not sure how many braids he has in this picture, but since we can see an end of one just above his right shoulder, it looks like either one or three.

For me Brigade, & the New Men, were guilty pleasures because I could easily find them in grocery stores and read them while my mother did the shopping.

I never bought them because I didn't know the whole story but given what we now know I guess I should gave gotten them in the first place.

as somebody who has the misfortune owning issues of Brigade, Battlestone and the entire Bloodstrike team were effectively undead thanks to the Born Again process, so they could shrug off fatalities such as being shot in the head or being blown up

-*snrk* KAYO. Yeah, that's about peak cleverness for ol' Rob, I guess. Kayo is a Japanese martial artist who uses various weapons and has a "Martial Arts" schtick. He was effectively the second-in-command to Battlestone. After a mission went awry, Battlestone fired the entire team, but Kayo refused to leave, sticking with Brigade for the next incarnation. He remained on the team for all sorts of shenanigans, always managing to survive or not get booted off, like most members were, until he finally took a sabbatical to return to Japan, to "clear his head". However, it turned out that he was just assassinating people all over again, wiping out the successors of the man Brigade had debuted killing. However, he was captured by one and badly tortured, until being rescued by Lethal, who'd been hired to kill him (this was apparently her plan all along). Weak from the torture, he didn't help out much on later missions, and quietly left the team when Seahawk began reorganizing it after Battlestone was taken away and brainwashed. In the last moments of most of the team, he and the others were assassinated by Crypt, who came from the future.

-Kayo is a PL 7 Sword Guy, also using a bow & arrow and a couple other things.

I'm pretty sure that the name and character is supposed to be a reference to the Green Hornet's sidekick Kato (originally Japanese, became variously Korean, Filipino or Chinese depending on adaptation) who was pretty big in the early 90s thanks to NOW Comics' well-received Green Hornet title.

Oh right- I forgot all about that. It's just cringey "LOL swearing and calling other comic companies' characters gay is EXTREME!" stuff.
yeah. Moore was doing something with it at least, but then he left the company i think. then they did that awful Youngblood where they were all fighting and killing one another to be part of a big multiversal youngblood team. at the beginning two of them are in a hottub and going on about how pathetic these two guys Scott and Logan are. how once a week they dress like their girlfriends and give them blowjobs. yes i think mark millar wrote that why do you ask?

lol okay here's a quote "WE're richer than Dick Cheney and getting our cocks sucked by two up and coming super teens for pete's sake. what are you complaining about?" That Battlestone saying that as he's snorting cocaine and talking to Seahawk

"I'm just sick of all the decadence, Battlestone. sick of the drugs, sick of the champagne, sick of Scott and Logan here dressing up as their girlfriends and giving us head."

and then Shaft is fighting the reanimated corpses of 1960s civil rights leader....WTF Millar?

who has stolen a single strand of Supreme's pubic hair..God in Heaven.

and Johnny Panic got a penile extension but can't pay for it so the company wants those three inches back. this is the worst shit Millar ever wrote lol. i think he's trying to parody himself but fuck

Yeah I was reading on TV Tropes that a gimmick in Bloodstrike was that they were constantly being resurrected, so they could suffer gory injuries in every issue.

-This character, known only as "Lethal", is very much the "Typical '90s Heroine"- because for some reason, in the 1990s, "Fanservice" meant "looked like a snarling, furious grouch at absolutely all times". This is probably inspired by Chris Claremont's proud, anti-authoritarian female characters, who were made extra-popular by artists like Jim Lee & Marc Silvestri, with Psylocke being one of the best later examples as a pure "Miss Fanservice" type. His were never QUITE this bad, but incompetent writers and other creators just kind of did a "Same, plus MORE" thing and here we have Lethal, Zealot and others- all grimacing, bad-attitude females who look like they're one bad day away from committing genocide. Lethal in particular was constantly masked (also helpful so that the artists never had to draw her face), but still dressed in skimpy clothing.

-Lethal is an assassin and martial artist, mostly using bladed weapons (as you can probably guess by her name), but can also build and hack computers. She was on the early incarnation of Brigade, but was fired after their first big mission, leaving on bad terms along with Boone (Kayo, their teammate, stuck around). Both her & Boone later rejoined after Brigade suffered some casualties. She rescued captured members Kayo & Seahawk from Bloodstrike, but soon left once more, pointing out she'd only agreed to be there for the duration of the "Bloodstrike" mission.

-Lethal later appeared being hired to kill her former teammate, Kayo... but revealed that her goal from the beginning was to find out who wanted him dead, so they escaped together. She left for a third time when Boone betrayed the team and he & Battlestone were thought killed, and the assassin known as Crypt attacked, slaughtering her teammates! Lethal was thought killed too, but was actually sent into the future. A DARK future... one without violence or swearing! Pure Hell for an IMAGE character! Attempting to fight her way back to the past, she was captured by an evil version of Kayo and... Brigade and other books were cancelled in the Image Implosion, and we never found out what happened to her.

-Lethal is a PL 7.5 Swordfighter, but a PL 7 defensive character- like most Image characters, she's not that resistant to damage.

It says something about how desensitized to the 90s you've become when Sword Chick named "Lethal" with a weird mask, swords and a stripper costume with randomly placed armor pieces only rates a 6/10 on the scale. Maybe you should step away from the Liefeld for a couple days. :)

haha I think I was looking at plainer pictures when I wrote that. She's at least an "8"- she even has an unknown identity! (Edit: Oh wait, it's just what I wrote for Kayo's- I forgot to edit that one in)

Having actually read Brigade now, it's a bit funny how bad it is. Like you can see that Rob wants Battlestone to be Cable- a guy who wants to keep his team at an arm's length so he can be emotionally distant, but have it all be an "act" and he's really a father to his men... except Rob is such a poor writer that it never comes off right. Battlestone comes off as flippant, demanding and stoic with his troops, appears to blow off the death of a teammate like it's nothing, but only in a random aside do we see him acting all pissed off over her dead body.
