Oh right- I forgot all about that. It's just cringey "LOL swearing and calling other comic companies' characters gay is EXTREME!" stuff.
yeah. Moore was doing something with it at least, but then he left the company i think. then they did that awful Youngblood where they were all fighting and killing one another to be part of a big multiversal youngblood team. at the beginning two of them are in a hottub and going on about how pathetic these two guys Scott and Logan are. how once a week they dress like their girlfriends and give them blowjobs. yes i think mark millar wrote that why do you ask?

lol okay here's a quote "WE're richer than Dick Cheney and getting our cocks sucked by two up and coming super teens for pete's sake. what are you complaining about?" That Battlestone saying that as he's snorting cocaine and talking to Seahawk

"I'm just sick of all the decadence, Battlestone. sick of the drugs, sick of the champagne, sick of Scott and Logan here dressing up as their girlfriends and giving us head."

and then Shaft is fighting the reanimated corpses of 1960s civil rights leader....WTF Millar?

who has stolen a single strand of Supreme's pubic hair..God in Heaven.

and Johnny Panic got a penile extension but can't pay for it so the company wants those three inches back. this is the worst shit Millar ever wrote lol. i think he's trying to parody himself but fuck

I do kinda like some of the porn titles in the shop there: Kingdom Cum, The Dick Knight Returns, Watch Women, Sex Men 2, and my personal favorite Debbie Does Asgard.
God damnit Millar. And I checked, it was him.

And naturally, Seahawk here, the guy who apparently just wants to help people and refuses to kill his old teammates, gets murdered to show that yes, the stakes are real and these heroes will kill each other.

God damnit Millar.

I realize my viewpoint is often in the minority here, but looking at just about ALL the female Image heroes (except for the Moore-written ones, which doesn't count), its kind of obvious, they're drawn as basically strippers/centerfold models with guns and blades (OK, and with snarls instead of pouts or smiles); and while obviously men aren't realistically depicted in terms of anatomy (especially by Liefeld), the women all have boobs bigger than their heads and waists that can't possibly contain internal organs. And every costume involves a thong. Pretty much the distillation of the slam about comics just being the adolescent fantasies of boys who never grew up.

The more I read about Millar, the more he seems to hold both the characters in comics, and the fans of comics, in contempt. Which makes me wonder if being one of his fans is somehow masochistic...

Oh yeah, Image was well known for its fanservice. No pretense on their part, they were all about being as adolescently 90s as possible. Boobs, bullets, blood, blades and badasses.

Millar is . . . frustrating. On the one hand, he's got this UGLINESS inside of him. He writes some of the most vile cynicism I've ever seen, just Ennis-level mean spirited garbage.

And yet . . .

He can write genuinely uplifting, good stories with a real sincerity to them.

It's like he has this evil inside of him that just builds and builds, and has to purge it with these ugly stories so he can write the good ones.

-Thermal is probably the most hopelessly generic-looking of Brigade, save the obvious "Guy With Guns" characters- nothing on her stands out as particuarly interesting or unique. In fact, she's pretty well just "Hot chick in a full bodysuit", and oftentimes that bodysuit lacks any extraneous details at all- it's just red and yellow with random partitions separating the colors!

-Thermal's purpose on the team is at least unique- she was a reporter who was sent by her editor to expose Battlestone & Brigade as dangerous, unhinged vigilantes. This was kind of funny, because that's a ludicrously dangerous undercover assignment to send your reporter on... though to be fair, Battlestone & Brigade WERE dangerous, unhinged vigilantes, so he was right to be concerned! However, Thermal began to appreciate her team with time, and eventually chose not to publish her expose on the team- she'd also begun a relationship with Coldsnap, creating a "Beauty & The Beast/Fire & Ice" thing. Her teammate Boone published the story after being bribed by the government, but Brigade sided with her still... just in time for her & Coldsnap to be callously slaughtered by the time-travelling assassin "Crypt", because the creators had just gotten tired of them.

-Thermal is a generic, everyday "Flying Blaster" with an aura and stuff.

Complications:
Motivation (Being Extreme and Looking Cool)
Prejudice (Monster)- Coldsnap despises his monstrous "Ice Giant" form.
Relationship (Thermal)- The two are apparently together in a "Beauty and the Beast" kind of thing.

Total: Abilities: 28 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 63 / Defenses: 9 (112)

-Coldsnap is the second of two brothers who joined Brigade largely because Battlestone wanted to finance it with their inherited wealth. With Iceman-style ice powers (right down to a "power regulator", like the one Bobby wore during the late '80s and early '90s), he was pretty generic, but he was permanently stuck in a "Big Ice Guy" form on his first mission (the members of Bloodstrike damaged his regulator pack), becoming the team's Token Powerhouse. Despising his freakish appearance, he was emotionally unstable and borderline suicidal, but his teammate Thermal helped keep him sane. Finally, both were callously slaughtered by the time-travelling assassin "Crypt", because the creators had just gotten tired of them- Thermal was killed first, and an enraged Coldsnap was killed trying to avenge her.

-Coldsnap is effectively what happens if you combine an Iceman ripoff with a generic Powerhouse build, creating a PL 8 +6/+10 strongman.

I loved the idea of the ice-guy becoming the tank, a big walking ice-giant. It seemed pretty creative, all things considered, since ice-characters are generally blaster/controller sorts (as he was initially, and others like Iceman, Killer Frost, Captain Cold, Icicle, etc, are).

Changing his name to Glacier or something, at that point (and ditching the ranged ice-blasts/snares, in favor of the much greater strength and ice armor), probably would have better fit the new theme, tho.

If I were gonna rescue him and Thermal and progress their story, I'd have her be able to melt him out of his uncontrolled ice-giant form and leave him powered down for an hour or so before his power starts creating a new layer of icy armor over him, so that they can have the occasional nookie. (I'm a sucker for happy endings. No matter how irreconcilable such a thing is for an Image character.) :)

First Appearance: Brigade #1 (May 1993)
Role: Anti-Hero
Marvel Character Most Ripped Off: Namor, kinda? (more greatly resembles Batman with Namor-ish powers, maybe)
'90s Ratio: 4/10 (generic super-strong guy with regeneration; actually lacks the shitty attitude)
Group Affiliations: Brigade

Advantages:
All-Out Attack, Benefit 3 (Wealth), Power Attack

Immunity 3 (Drowning, Pressure, Cold) [3]
Movement 1 (Environmental Adaptation- Aquatic) [2]
Regeneration 6 [6]

"Rob Liefeld Character" Enhanced Skills 3: Stealth 3 (+8) (Flaws: Limited to Feet) [1]

Offense:
Unarmed +10 (+6 Damage, DC 21)
Initiative +4

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness +6, Fortitude +8, Will +3

Complications:
Motivation (Being Extreme and Looking Cool)
Responsibility (Impetuous)- Being a rich man's son, Seahawk isn't used to being challenged, and this made him impetuous.

Total: Abilities: 58 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 25 / Defenses: 9 (107)

-LOL this guy is literally just a 1990s Batman: The Animated Series toy where he's wearing, like, Aquatic Armor that never showed up in the cartoon! You know, when they wanted to sell a "Blue Batman with a rebreather" or "Arctic Batman" or whatever! That's Seahawk!

-Seahawk and his brother Coldsnap were wealthy brothers who were given powers when a "mysterious object" penetrated their father's submarine, killing him and making them both superheroes. Battlestone heard about them, and immediately recruited them, hoping to use them to fund Brigade. Seahawk was the more impetuous of the two brothers, being a "hot-blooded" teammate on a team full of psychopaths and edgelords. However, Coldsnap was eventually killed by Kombat, and the team disbanded after Battlestone was taken away by the U.S. government to serve them as a loyal dog. The final remaining original member of the team, Seahawk, now more mature and reasoned, gathered a third incarnation of Brigade, but with established Image characters like Shadowhawk & Kaboom- this proved short-lived, however. He hasn't been seen since.

-Seahawk, like many, if not most, Image characters, is Super-Strong, Durable & Regenerative, having survived a hole being blown through his chest! Otherwise he's a low-tier, PL 8 Flying Brick.

What's with the crazy long canines in that second picture? Was he turned into a vampire at some point?

(And again, I kinda liked how he wasn't the bog-standard flying, strong, tough guy 'Paragon,' but also had the aquatic aspect to him, which kind of took it in a different direction. Other than Namor, the Superman-alogue doesn't usually mash-up with the Aquaman-alogue.)

Is it weird that the main character, Battlestone, is like, the *least* interesting person on that team?

If it's any consolation (and I know it isn't, even for ME) I think the end result would have been this wasn't 'our Youngblood' so to speak, since they mention it was a competition to be part of a multiversal team. I think that would have been the twist and give them an out to things like Supreme violently murdering Twilight in the second issue.

Granted nothing came out after the first...

-Atlas is introduced in Brigade with little fanfare, popping up after Seahawk & Coldsnap are recruited, and going on them for only two missions before he's Thunderbirded- shot through the chest by Prince Genocide in an attack meant for Battlestone. He can increase his size of strength. A pretty terrible one-off loser, he's only PL 7.

oh that's the thing. IIRC, Seahawk and Coldsnap's TRUE secret origin involves Roman, Liefeld's 'homage' to Namor. I am not going to risk the SAN of re-reading that issue, thank you very much

-Wow, now THIS is a generic-looking character- just some attractive girl in a green swimsuit. That's the entire character design. Stasis was a rookie on Brigade, often questioning Battlestone's orders rather than immediately following them, and only stuck with the team for its first couple of missions- after Atlas died on a mission in outer space, and a long trip back home, she quit. And was promptly shot through the forehead and killed in gratuitous fashion by Bloodstrike, who engaged in a team-fight with Brigade. Writeups.org cracks wise that "No wonder her player got bored and exited the campaign."

-Stasis is an "Area Attack" debuff-style character, ensnaring people in "Stasis Fields" that require some degree of concentration to utilize. Not otherwise durable or capable in a scrap, she was completely un-dynamic and probably just existed to give Rob some boobs and legs to draw, which is why they did away with her so quickly. Apparently her powers came from being experimented on by aliens.
