I mean, I don't think anyone denies this particular aspect, lol. Liefeld is infamous for it, and he's notorious in part because he doesn't just draw impossibly-proportioned women, but he does it BADLY. I've noticed that fanservice artists like Adam Hughes & Amanda Connor tend to get positive reactions from most people. Even Frank Cho didn't draw much hate until he directly targetted anti-fanservice "Activists", too.

But Liefeld's bizarre "tiny waist, balloon boobs" women weren't just over the top, they looked BAD, too!

-Yes, for whatever reason, Rob thought it would be cute to have a Namor-lookalike in his comics, but call him "Roman", which is "Namor" backwards. Which was like... the point of Namor's name in the first place. He was introduced as an "Elder Statesman" hero, active during World War II, who could have helped out Brigade, but most of them died. As a "recognizable" (I mean, I'd at least heard of him, mainly because of him being such a prominent take-off of an established hero) character, he was chosen for the relaunched Brigade team, but that book didn't last long.

HalloweenJack wrote: Fri Aug 14, 2020 9:34 pm Hey Jab, you ever gonna post those things I told you about that one Mark Millar Youngblood book? And the quotes? Or would you get in trouble? :)
Oh right- I forgot all about that. It's just cringey "LOL swearing and calling other comic companies' characters gay is EXTREME!" stuff.
yeah. Moore was doing something with it at least, but then he left the company i think. then they did that awful Youngblood where they were all fighting and killing one another to be part of a big multiversal youngblood team. at the beginning two of them are in a hottub and going on about how pathetic these two guys Scott and Logan are. how once a week they dress like their girlfriends and give them blowjobs. yes i think mark millar wrote that why do you ask?

lol okay here's a quote "WE're richer than Dick Cheney and getting our cocks sucked by two up and coming super teens for pete's sake. what are you complaining about?" That Battlestone saying that as he's snorting cocaine and talking to Seahawk

"I'm just sick of all the decadence, Battlestone. sick of the drugs, sick of the champagne, sick of Scott and Logan here dressing up as their girlfriends and giving us head."

and then Shaft is fighting the reanimated corpses of 1960s civil rights leader....WTF Millar?

who has stolen a single strand of Supreme's pubic hair..God in Heaven.

and Johnny Panic got a penile extension but can't pay for it so the company wants those three inches back. this is the worst shit Millar ever wrote lol. i think he's trying to parody himself but fuck

I do kinda like some of the porn titles in the shop there: Kingdom Cum, The Dick Knight Returns, Watch Women, Sex Men 2, and my personal favorite Debbie Does Asgard.
I was about to comment on how boring and genetic the Brigade characters are... Then I read this and suddenly I felt the need to clean my retinas with acid.
There is no denying that superheroes have a pretty significant sexual component, but FFS this is like taking a shit over the entire genre just for the sake of it.

Really, isn't that the same thing as saying it's by Millar?

Good Girl Art has been a part of the medium almost since the beginning. Sheena, Queen of the Jungle debuted in 1937 (in the UK, 1938 in the US). But the key is to do the art well. Whether Amanda Conner or Matt Baker that hasn't changed.

And the "Image Style" doesn't do women well.

The remainder of Brigade here- four guys in total- is a set of other Image characters, only some created by Liefeld, who were created in other books and then transplanted onto Brigade just as the book was dying out.

S.P.I.C.E. (Super Prototype Intelligent Cyborg Entity)
Created By:
Rob Liefeld
First Appearance: Fighting American #1 (April 1997)
Role: Anti-Hero, Bucky Palette Swap
Marvel Character Most Ripped Off: The Female Bucky (IT'S LITERALLY A RECOLOR), Boom-Boom (goggles)
'90s Ratio: 4/10 (goggles; cyborg)
Group Affiliations: Brigade

-Hoo boy- so S.P.I.C.E. is a recolor of Liefeld's female Bucky for his ill-fated Heroes Reborn Captain America series, thrown in as the sidekick to his not-Cap rip-off, Fighting American (a character used entirely as a f*ck you to Marvel for booting Rob off early). Now used as a cyborg, she... doesn't have any kind of online bio.

I had the misfortune of reading the first five issues of Fighting American. It was... flat. The story was almost the same and yhe chatacter were cardboard cutouts.
SPICE was literally just Rikki Barnes with guns mounted in het fingers.

That name would oddly be perfect for one of the Ani-Mates or a bird-themed Jobber Villain, lol.

-Vanguard is a weird-looking alien superhero invented by Gary Carlson & Erik Larsen for Carlson's own anthology Megaton. He is charged with defending Earth, which is considered a boring, do-nothing assignment- his only companion is a sarcastic cycloptic robot and some morphing androids. When Larsen left Marvel and formed Image, he & Carlson retooled the character into being part of the Savage Dragon's universe- he now debuted in a fight with Rob Liefeld's Supreme. Vanguard got two Limited Series there (one of which might have been supposed to be ongoing, but issues with keeping artists led to it being cancelled early), and was a frequent guest in Savage Dragon and related books. As a "free" bigger-name Image hero, he was chosen for one of many outside characters to join the revamped Brigade book, but that didn't last long before Liefeld was dumped from Image.

-Vanguard is apparently strong enough to fight with Supreme of all people for a while, so he's a standard "Flying Brick" but with flight and translators wrapped up in his gear instead of being natural powers.

Vanguard actually looks like a half-decent design. But this is the male version of "huge boobs, tiny waist" isn't it? I mean, his arms are much bigger than his legs. Maybe longer too. And I think his waist is narrower than his neck.

Well, it's Erik Larsen. He draws EVERYONE that way. His women are, if anything, more pervertedly designed than Liefeld's and just as unrealistic (balloon breasts and inch-wide waists), but since he drew the men in such a cartoonish way, and he's overall a much better artist than Rob was, it doesn't come off as badly. It's still puerile and male power fantasy, but Larsen at least has fun with it, lol.

You might have oversold Vanguard's strength there. He did technically fight Supreme in his first appearance, but it was a two-part battle. During the first half, Vanguard got his butt roundly kicked and survived only because his ship managed to teleport Supreme away. In the re-match, Vanguard used a gun that siphoned off half of Supreme's strength (before said gun overloaded and exploded), and then fed half of that energy into his own suit, which gave Vanguard more raw strength than Supreme. It let Vanguard beat on Supreme for a while, but the drain effects didn't last long and Supreme wound up winning anyway.

I generally got the impression Vanguard was overall closer to the Savage Dragon in terms of strength and toughness, definitely not in the Thing/Bedrock strength level.
