Extinct Giant Hyena
PL 6 (58)- Minion Rank 4, Sidekick Rank 12
Normal Version:
PL 4-5
STRENGTH 3 STAMINA 5 AGILITY 2
FIGHTING 4 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE -4 AWARENESS 1 PRESENCE -3

Skills:
Athletics 5 (+7)
Close Combat (Bite) 2 (+6)
Expertise (Survival) 6 (+7)
Intimidation 7 (+4)
Perception 5 (+6)
Stealth 3 (+5)

Advantages:
Fast Grab, Improved Critical (Bite), Improved Trip, Teamwork

Powers:
"Animal Senses" Senses 4 (Low-Light Vision, Acute & Extended Scent, Tracking-Scent) [4]
Speed 2 (8 mph) [2]

"Hyena's Bite" Strength-Damage +3 (Extras: Penetrating 5) [8]
Features 1: May Eat Bones & Gristle [1]

Offense:
Unarmed +4 (+3 Damage, DC 18)
Bite +6 (+6 Damage, DC 21)
Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +5 (DC 15), Parry +5 (DC 15), Toughness +5, Fortitude +7, Will +3

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Hyenas cannot speak to humans, nor use their paws to easily manipulate objects.
Reputation (Evil)- Cultures all over the world fear and hate the Hyena, disliking their creepy laughter. Even animal-lovers tend to dislike them.
Enemy (Lions)- Lions & Hyenas have a dark relationship with each other, frequently killing each others' infants, and stealing kills. Lions are responsible for 71% of Hyena deaths in some areas.

Total: Abilities: 16 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 15 / Defenses: 9 (58)

Era: Pleistocene
Range: Europe
Stereotypes: Evil, vindictive, laughing dickwads.
Colouring: Tan & brown with dark spots
Size: Up to 4.5 feet long (135-250 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Small packs.
Diet: Wild Horses, Steppe Bison, Woolly Rhinoceros
Tactics: Mass group chase-downs and tandem biting, consuming even the bones.

-Naturally, the Hyena has to have a bigger, more awesome extinct relative as well. The Cave Hyena was a 250-ish pound monster whose remains have been found from Spain to Siberia. Despite being found in many bone caves throughout Europe, they are rarely depicted on cave art- it's thought that even ancient humans thought little of Hyenas. These monsters have been proven to hunt wild horses, steppe bison and WOOLLY RHINOS (!!), along with just about any other type of ungulate.

-Their extinction is poorly understood, even today- they started falling back 20,000 years ago, and aren't seen after 11,000 years ago- perhaps the falling of Europe's grasslands in favor of mixed forests finished them off, as humans & Wolves were far more acclimated to those types of regions.

-Cave Hyenas ramp up a Hyena's natural power, becoming major powerhouses.

-Hyaenodons arer named for their Hyena-like teeth, but are not closely related at all- once thought to be part of Carnivora, they and their Order, the Creodonts, are now thought to be more closely related to PANGOLINS. They weighed up to 1,100 lbs. (though close relatives were barely the size of a Marten or Striped Hyena) and had massive skulls, but comparatively tiny brains. They are believed to be pack hunters that pooped all over their victims to keep other predators away... well, they're still related to Hyenas, so you gotta give them SOME gross crap.

Procyonidae (Raccoon Family)

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

PROCYONIDAE (Order- Carnivora):
-For eons, scientists have debated the taxonomic classifications of the Giant Panda, the Red Panda, and whether or not each is a bear or a Raccoon. The final truth seems to have been decided: Raccoons are simply VERY-closely related to bears, and morseo to the Red Panda. This Family has 20 Species in it, but only two are famous- the Coati & Kinkajous are not household names.

"Tiny Size" Shrinking 8 (Feats: Innate) (Extras: Permanent +0) -- (1 foot) [17]
(-2 Strength, +4 Defenses, +8 Stealth, -4 Intimidation, -1 Speed)

Unarmed +5 (-3 Damage, DC 12)
Bite +6 (-2 Damage, DC 13)

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Raccoons cannot speak to humans, but their paws are more adaptable than most.
Disabled (Poor Long-Distance Vision)
Quirk (Fussy)- Raccoons in captivity are known to repeatedly "douse" or wash food items before eating them. The reasons for this are still under debate.

Total: Abilities: -12 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 27 / Defenses: 3 (35)

Era: Modern Day
Range: North America
Stereotypes: Mischievious pranksters & thieves. Friendly forest critters.
Colouring: Black, white & grey.
Size: About 2 feet long (5-60 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary, but sometimes band into large "Gazes" in cities.
Diet: Omnivorous- plants, insects, small animals.
Tactics: Flee at all costs, rarely biting savagely with sharp teeth.

-Famous for their bandit-like "masks", Raccoons are notoriously adaptable, and readily acclimate themselves to human habitations. Pretty much as soon as Europeans made permanent lodgings in North America, Raccoons moved in and took advantage. With handlike paws, small size, and great agility, they can get basically anywhere they need to, and can easily become gigantic pests. In some places, they've gotten bold enough to attack and kill family pets (one Anti-Pest show featured a Raccoon that reached into a Parrot's cage and RIPPED ITS HEAD OFF), as Raccoons have some serious meat on their bones, and not all are tiny puffballs- they max out around sixty pounds! In fact, they are one of the most-variable mammal species in terms of size, as subspecies across the continent can weigh 5-60 lbs.

-Raccoon populations now exist in Europe and Japan, either from escapees or introduction- as they are nimble and dextrous, they can rapidly multiply and get just about anywhere. Being able to eat just about anything is a huge advantage for anything in the cities of Earth, so like the Pigeon, Rat & Gull, they are getting along just fine. Despite their famous intelligence and adaptability, though, their high-risk lifestyle results in most only living a few years of their expected 20-year lifespan- they have to cross busy roads like any other urban animal, and are vulnerable to Dogs & Coyotes.

-The Whig party in the United States used a Raccoon as its logo- as the party was seen as sympathetic to black folks, the epithet "coon" soon became both a taunt to the Whigs, and an ethnic slur that persists in small numbers to this day (but was much more common in the Whigs' heyday).

-At only PL 2, Raccoons are not that tough, but can be bitey and scratchy when cornered. Generally, their best bet is to flee. They also have the greatest tactile sense in all observed animals, surpassing ours.

And of course, some of them run a newspaper in the Evergreen forest, where they frequently oppose a pink aardvark. <nod>

Alas, only Canadians get that joke, lol.

Whenever I tossed a Raccoons reference in my Rocket Raccoon build, it got NOTHING.

I remember that show, it's wiki page says it was shown both here in the UK and in the US.
There's actually a reboot scheduled to begin airing sometime this year.

There's a semi-popular podcast that features a main character that has a fear of Raccoons.

Raccoons are terribly clever. I lived in a 2nd floor apartment with a sliding door to a balcony with stairs down. I had raccoons break in one night by using a stick to pry open the sliding screen door. As I chased them out, the last one (obviously the leader) stopped at the threshold to shoot me a dirty look before leaving.

It’s tricky with animals, as -3 is chimps, gorillas and dolphins and almost nothing else, and -4 is for the entire rest of the animal kingdom.

-The little-known Crab-Eating Raccoon is another Procyon species, and lives in Central & South America instead of North America. They are much more slender than Common Raccoons, and are known for a shellfish-based diet. Its teeth are a little more developed for crushing things like shells. They are far less adaptable than regular Raccoons to human habitats, but are slightly more skilled in the treetops.

AFAIK that standard comes from a fear of equating chimps/gorillas/dolphins with "Impaired Intellect" (-2) humans. Which simply doesn't worry me. I'm all right with calling those three animals (and probably African Grey parrots) -2, which gives me the granularity to assign -3 to elephants, raccoons, etc.

Incidentally I also think many animals, such as most fish and invertebrates, should be -5 rather than -4.

-You had to know there was a giant Raccoon-type creature out there somewhere- it's just inevitable. The Chapalmalania is a huge, five-foot, 330-ish lb. Procron from the Pliocene era, about the size of a Black Bear. It evolved from a doglike Coati ancestor millennia ago, and came about in South America, but was quickly undone when the continents re-merged, unable to compete with other animals. It's thought to be omnivorous judging by its dentition, and may have been a powerful scavenger, fending off other predators.

I'm still pretty sure that a raccoon mobsters were running some kind of scheme in the community trash bins at my last apartment. Completely unashamed about it too. I wasn't much awake at the time, but I think that one pulled a knife on me. ;)
