one EMT friend i spoke to a while back on the subject of worst damage done to a human answered bear attacks, the damage he compared it to was the equivalent of being involved in an industrial accident and he remarked that a chipper shredder wouldve been less painful then a bear mauling

I've heard that there was a huge increase in the number of bear attacks in national parks over the last decade. People just want to get selfies with the bears, or cubs, or other stupid behavior in complete defiance to any instinct for self preservation.

Giant pandas have long been a part of Chinese panda diplomacy. In return for supporting policy/trade/etc they allow areas to rent pandas as 'gifts' for obscene amounts of money. But, they also tend to bring in massive tourism bucks.

I've also been hearing stories about how pandas are ecological disasters. In order to support the local panda populations, other animals in the same area have become endangered and in some cases gone extinct.

But they are cute!

Perception 4 (+5)
Stealth 3 (+6)

Advantages:
Extraordinary Effort, Fast Grab, Improved Hold

Powers:

Speed 1 (4 mph) [1]
"Natural Weapons- Claws & Teeth" Strength-Damage +1 [1]

Offense:

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Bears cannot speak to humans, nor use their paws to easily manipulate objects.
Responsibility (Cubs)- If you mess with a Mother Bear's cubs, you WILL die. Don't even try it.
Enemy (Tigers, Pythons)- Both are known to prey upon Sun Bears once in a while. Leopards may even be a threat from time to time.

Total: Abilities: 24 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 6 / Defenses: 9 (55)

Era: Modern
Range: Southeast Asian Tropics
Stereotypes: None (too unknown).
Colouring: Black/grey with odd tan spot on chest
Size: Up to 4.5 feet long (110-145 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs.
Diet: Bugs, Plants, fruit, shoots, leaves, honey, small mammals
Tactics: Climbing trees to escape, or lashing out with paws & teeth.

-Sun Bears, also called "Honey Bears", are the smallest of all Bears, weighing no more than most people, and feeding mostly on honey, larvae, and bugs- not large animals. They are known for their "U"-shaped chest patches and very fine, sleek, short body hair that makes them look almost hairless. They are the most arboreal of the Bear family, and the hardest to find.

-The Sun Bear's small size gives them one of the weakest statline of all the Bears (they're only PL 5.5 on offense), but they're still no pushovers. It's an arboreal, tropical animal, much more comfortable in trees than on land, and eats so much honey it's also called the Honey Bear. It's not the most exciting Bear (I can't imagine fighting one in a campaign), but it's rather distinctive.

Total: Abilities: 34 / Skills: 34--17 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 6 / Defenses: 8 (70)

Era: Modern
Range: South America
Stereotypes: None (too unknown).
Colouring: Black with tan chest patch.
Size: Up to 6.5 feet long (110-440 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs (congregate around huge food sources)
Diet: Plants & vegetation. Rarely meat.
Tactics: Climbing trees to escape, or lashing out with paws & teeth.

-South America's only Bear, the Spectacled Bear is the second-largest land animal there aside from the Tapir, and the last surviving Short-Faced Bear type. It's also the one of the most-arboreal Bears, being very at-home in the treetops. Their population is splintered, but the bear is highly adaptable, living in a variety of habitats successfully. Despite their size, Spectacled Bears are only responsible for a single human death- a hunter that had already shot the animal that killed him. The famous English story Paddington Bear actually stars a Spectacled Bear, as he hails from "Darkest Peru", but otherwise they appear little in popular culture- most South American fiction and mythology deals with the Jaguar or Coatl instead.

-Spectacled Bears are a step above the Sun & Panda Bears, being quite a bit larger and more heavy-hitting, but aren't quite as beefy as Black Bears are. Despite usually hunting smaller prey, they can and will kill Tapir, Cattle & Horses that are more than double their own body weight, proving they are quite adept powerhouse hunters in their own right.

Total: Abilities: 34 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 8 / Defenses: 10 (74)

Era: Modern
Range: Indian subcontinent.

-The Sloth Bear is India's bear, a shaggy-furred creature that is slightly lankier than Brown & Asiatic Black Bears. This is, in fact, what Baloo is in The Jungle Book. Their fur is a bit confusing, since the animal inhabits some very warm regions- there's no need to have song a long, unkempt coat. They do not hibernate, do not congregate around large food sources (like every other bear does) and are the most nocturnal of bears. Despite their size, they mostly eat termites & ants. Sloth Bears prefer to stand their ground against threats, which means most animals won't target them, but some Tigers are known and habitual "bear killers" (JESUS CHRIST), though they hunt carefully- waiting for the bear to be hunched over a termite mound, then attacking from behind and seizing the back of the neck. One tiger simply shattered the bear's spine with its paw (!!), then waited for it to exhaust itself before going in for the kill. But in a direct conflict, a Tiger is hard-pressed to kill the bear, and usually disengages as soon as the bear becomes aware of its presence- sneak attacks are essential.

-Sloth Bears occasionally live in regions overlapping with Asiatic Black Bears & Sun Bears- they do not act aggressively towards each other like they would to Tigers & Leopards, perhaps because they differ so much in habit and diet, and are not a threat to each other's cubs. For some reason, Asian Elephants & Indian Rhinos do not tolerate Sloth Bears in their vicinity, and will drive them out- they don't do this with Tigers. The bear's aggression makes them notoriously dangerous to encounter- while most bears will bluff and do "mock charges", Sloth Bears will initiate a physical attack almost immediately- over 137 people were attacked (and 11 killed) between 1998 & 2000 in one forest. "Dancing Bears" were frequently-abused animals used in street performances for centuries, and India has finally formally banned it, finding education for the former "masters".

-A Sloth Bear is pretty much like other bears in its weight class, being powerful, tough and faster than you'd think- even arming citizens against them proves ineffective, because the bear's fast charge tends to bowl people over before they can fire off a shot. They tend to attack to maim rather than kill, and will often leave the victim badly wounded instead of dead. Unlike most bears, they are Fearless, owing to their "stand their ground" methods.

Total: Abilities: 34 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 8 / Defenses: 10 (74)

Era: Modern
Range: North America
Colouring: Black, brown, rarely white (the Kermode/Spirit Bear)
Size: Up to 6.5 feet long (110-660 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs (congregate around huge food sources)
Diet: Plants, fruits, deer fawns, fish, garbage.
Tactics: Climbing trees to escape, or lashing out with paws & teeth.

-The Black Bear is an iconic medium-sized Bear, yet is still bigger than almost any other land carnivore. The American variety can weigh over 600 pounds, and is much larger than the Asian variant (a slim & svelte 440 lbs. is the max, there). Despite their size and natural weapons, they're far more likely to eat plants or garbage, and 95% of their diet is fruit & leaf-based. Few other animals would screw with them, though- only a Cougar would dare in the bear's natural range, and they can and will cause human fatalities if cornered- they have caused sixty human fatalities over the last century. They come in many colours, though most common is the black coat for which they're named. Others are brown to the point of looking like Grizzlies (they're distinct by being much slimmer and more narrow overall), and British Columbia even has the Kermode, or Spirit Bear, with its bizarre almost-white coat.

-Black Bears are found in numerous American cities, as their speed, intelligence, and dexterity makes them very capable at invading human space and eating garbage (bears are known to congregate in huge numbers in dumps), but this is naturally quite upsetting to human beings, who tend to drive them away. In the wild, they typically live 18-23 years, but in captivity the maximum has been 44 years of age. Black Bears have entered pop culture repeatedly- a Canadian soldier's bear named Winnipeg (after his hometown) became a beloved fixture at the London Zoo when he left it there after his tour of duty in World War I was over- writer A.A. Milne was inspired by his son's love for "Winnie" to create the beloved children's book icon Winnie-The-Pooh as a result. A drawing of Teddy Roosevelt refusing to shoot a baby Black Bear tied to a tree inspired a toymaker to design the first "Teddy Bear".

-Overall, Black Bears are tremendous predators, and make PL 7 quite easily- they're naturally far stronger than the Big Cats of their range, and do as much damage as a male Lion, allowing a balance between the two, so it's anyone's ballgame if they fight a Mountain or a Jaguar (also PL 7 creatures). They usually wouldn't bother, being both way too big for the other to normally consider tackling, but as higher-damage output characters tend to do better, my money's usually on Da Bears. Unlike the Sun Bear, it has several Advantages (but not nearly as many as cats- who are entirely meat-dependent and are much faster), and is a really huge threat for an unsuspecting human-level character.

-The shaggy fur of the Asiatic Black Bear sets it apart from its American cousin- this is a lighter bear with the distinctive "chest patch" known to most Asian bears. They are likely the oldest bear still remaining, and may be the animal from which all the others spread. They are nowhere near as common as American Black Bears, nor as widespread, but still live from Western Asia to Japan. They take live prey more than most other bears, usually ungulates living in their regions (as well as domestic animals). They are more aggressive towards humans than most bears, probably owing to overlapping territory with the Tiger.

-Asiatic Black Bears are only a notch weaker and more fragile than the American Black Bear, so they're still PL 7 animals.

Total: Abilities: 24 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 16 / Defenses: 15 (83)

Era: Modern
Range: Northernmost North America, Europe & Asia.
Colouring: Brown
Size: Up to 10 feet long (220-2,200 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs (congregate around huge food sources)
Diet: Plants, fruits, deer fawns, fish
Tactics: Lashing out with paws & teeth, using incredible force.

-Brown Bears include the heaviest of all bears, the Alaskan Kodiak (up to 2,200 lbs.!), and cover a massive range, essentially the whole northern part of the planet. Requiring huge areas, and packing incredible size, they are feared the world over, but generally leave well enough alone unless they feel threatened. Of course, since they can't really hide from aggressors (too big to climb trees once they get old enough and they live in open areas), they can easily become violent, and if you mess with their cubs... well, it's called "Mama Bear" for a reason. They're huge, full of teeth, and can kill with a single paw strike. An adult Grizzly could kill a frickin' MOOSE with one shot- their attacks on humans are spectacularly-gory, with the survivors often being left scalped as their skull slips out of the beast's jaws like a marble. The most-common victims seem to be Alaskan hunters who encounter one in the bush, surprising it. Brown Bears tend to fight humans (bipedal, like fighting bears are) like they would other bears, which involves grabbing the lower jaw to avoid being bitten in return- this is naturally quite dangerous to someone who weighs about a fifth of the bear.

-Various subspecies are known, as this is an extremely wide-ranging predator. The Eurasian Brown Bear stretches across the entire supercontinent, while in North America, most Brown Bears are called "Grizzlies" for their bristly, "grizzled" fur. Alaska boasts the Kodiak Bear. The Ussuri Brown Bear is Japan's own species, which was responsible for a horrific series of attacks in the early 1900s that left seven people dead. Read about it if you're ever sick of sleeping soundly again: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sankebets ... r_incident. Usurri Bears are almost as large as Kodiaks.

-Brown Bears are of various sizes, with the North American Grizzly being huge, and the Alaskan Kodiak being even BIGGER. The Eurasian Brown Bear is comparatively tiny at a mere 1,000 lbs., and all are quite lethal. Of course, the bottlenecking of animal damage (none should really go far beyond +10 damage, but almost all do more than +4 or +5, so nearly all big predators end up between five ranks of damage) means that most of them have the same stats, though it's still better than 2nd Edition, where the window was even smaller (since Human Limits were +7 instead of +4/+5). They are BIG, strong, and do a ton of damage, even without biting. They're lethal grapplers, faster than most people (a buddy from Art School was warned during his Park Ranger training- "Grizzly Bears can run as fast as the world's fastest man- You are NOT the world's fastest man."), and can do +9 damage in melee. The only modern land predator to match their PL is the Siberian Tiger. Be very afraid.

Re: Jab's Animal Builds (Sloth, Spectacled & Black Bear!)

Post by Spectrum »

I very recently heard about these!

A grizzly–polar bear hybrid (also named grolar bear, polar grizz, polizzle, pizzly bear[1][2], grizzlar or nanulak) is a rare ursid hybrid that has occurred both in captivity and in the wild. In 2006, the occurrence of this hybrid in nature was confirmed by testing the DNA of a unique-looking bear that had been shot near Sachs Harbour, Northwest Territories on Banks Island in the Canadian Arctic. The number of confirmed hybrids has since risen to eight, all of them descending from the same female polar bear.[3]

Possible wild-bred polar bear-grizzly bear hybrids have been reported and shot in the past, but DNA tests were not available to verify the bears' ancestry.

Genetic analysis has revealed multiple instances of introgressive hybridization between bear species,[4][5][6] including introgression of polar bear DNA into brown bears during the Pleistocene ("grizzly bear" is a local common name for Ursus arctos whereas "brown bear" is used internationally and in science to refer to the species as a whole).[7]
We rise from the ashes so that new legends can be born.

-Polar Bears are rivals with the Brown Bear for title of the largest bear- On average, they are MUCH bigger, and they hold the record for sheer size/length (11 feet versus a paltry 9'9"), but their heaviest specimens are lighter than the Kodiak, maxing out at seven-hundred pounds less. The lightest Polar Bears are heavier than the lightest Brown Bears, however. Polar Bears are a famous symbol of conservation and the Arctic as a whole; as an Apex Predator, they are spectacularly useful as a "pH test" for the health of the ecosystem. Images of scrawny, sickly Bears with dying cubs are as good a symbol of a potential whole environmental disaster going on up north as you're going to get (though the most famous image of such was actually not related to the climate change at all- the photographers later used it as an example of misplaced use of imagery for the wrong purpose). Despite the danger, they are still considered "Lower Risk" for extinction, but as they require sea ice for feeding, danger remains.

-Polar Bears are the most predatory of bears, not eating grasses or plant matter pretty much at all. Typically, their tactics involve waiting by seal breathing holes and pouncing on the creatures, or sniffing out hiding places and crashing down into the dens, killing the animals inside. They will also hunt caribou and musk ox, but have a trickier go of it. Only desperate bears will attack creatures as large as Walruses- despite their power, even a Polar Bear typically can't overpower one of those giants.

-Polar Bears are very much Brown Bears in stats (perhaps fitting, as they are a good evolutionary case of "Diversion"- the original Polar Bears were Brown Bears that turned white and gave birth to white children- the two can even crossbreed to make "Pizzly" Bears!), but recieve several boosts, mainly to side-Powers & Skills. They're better hunters (you kinda have to be out in the Arctic), are vastly stealthy in white conditions, and they're partially immune to the cold (their "white" fur is actually transparent fibre that absorbs sunlight and brings it to their skin, which is actually BLACK). I stuck two "Half-Point" powers in there because they balanced out, otherwise I hate putting decimal points into builds.
