And Freefall was always my favorite of the group.
Well, Jubilee was created because Louise Simmons denied Claremont the possibility of using Boom-Boom as Logan sidekick, hence the similarity.

I did not know that. Thanks.

-John Lynch was a side character in WildC.A.T.s- a stern government figure who distrusted what the WildC.A.T.s were up to. He reappears in Gen¹³, now shifting allegiances, as he realizes that he's sick of the government's control over the lives of people, especially the descendents of "Team 7". He quits, taking the Gen¹³ kids and protecting them, enabling their escape, and then becoming a mentor-figure to them. He would eventually discover that he was the birth father of Burnout, but would largely just act as the "Straight Man" to the extreme personalities of the kids. He's still kicking in DC to this day, having been threaded into the backstories of whichever clandestine government operation the story requires, but I've always found him hopelessly generic.

-Lynch is a pretty standard "Government Guy" build, but his a variety of Psychic powers, all of which have the Side-Effect Flaw for the way they mess with his brain.

DV8

Post by Jabroniville »

DV8:
-Coming only six issues into the run of Gen¹³, DV8 was about a team of Gen-Active kids led by Threshold (the villain from the first arc), and supervised by Ivana Baiul. They soon spun off into their own book in 1996, written by Brandon Choi (ugh) and Warren Ellis, who was as yet not really a "name" on the scene. The team goes on a series of dangerous black ops assignments, engaging in very "adult" situations compared even to other Image books, with lots of blood, swearing and sexual situations. Baiul became the leader of International Operations (I/O) and the team thus joined that, but many members began developing a conscience about their lifestyle. The book lasted for three years and 32 issues. A brief Limited Series came out in 2010, but it's largely been a dead property ever since.

Complications:
Responsibility (Insane)- A life of being a weapon for International Operations has driven Threshold insane- he now enjoys killing, and can go on murderous rampages if not controlled by drugs and/or sex.

Total: Abilities: 64 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 58 / Defenses: 11 (152)

-Threshold is a member of the "Gen-13" kids who was taken by the government years ago, and twisted to their own ends. A brutal killer, he slaughtered a man for striking him during a sparring session while rebuffing the advances of his own sister- the establishing character moment for both him and Bliss. He kind of represents the dark side of what I/O was doing, as he was a complete nutjob who got into that "Being a supervillain means you monologue like a pretentious doofus" thing- something that befell a lot of guys once Chris Claremont created the defining personality of Magneto (Fabian Nicieza & Scott Lobdell were bad for it on X-Men, too).

-In the first arc of Gen¹³, he appears faking allegiance to the runaway kids, sporting a completely different face & haircut. When Fairchild rejects his leadership because he clearly enjoys killing too much, he takes the rest of the kids back to the government base, where he assaults them. When he tortures Grunge to try and force his "awakening", he switches to Roxy when she begs him to stop- this awakens Grunge, who one-hit-KOs him. Threshold reappears at the end of the arc, now wearing a giant cape and going all "JOIN US and be awesome like me!" but it doesn't work, and John Lynch is able to steal the kids away. He & Bliss form "DV8" out of the Gen-Active kids they DID manage to take. He later turned on Ivana Baiul, who'd been controlling him with drugs and sex, when they ran out of the drugs; he defeated the entirety of DV8, and tried to recruit an army of Gen-Active kids.

-Threshold is rather powerful, easily able to take on all of Gen¹³ at once in their first arc. He can torture people with energy blasts, assault their minds, read minds, and more- he brings down Grunge & Fairchild simultaneously with a mental attack, for example. His big losses come from being taken unawares by a super-strong Grunge, and from Lynch blackmailing him using his sister Bliss. All in all, he's a PL 9 with some well-rounded power and Area & Perception-Ranged attacks.

There were a lot of jokes about the fact that Lynch was, in reality, not a nice guy, but a completely morally grey figure. In particular, when half of Gen13 ended up in a "Mirror Universe" kind of situation (during a crossover with Monkeyman and O'Brian), the only difference between the two versions of Lynch was which eye was damaged.

Threshold is Homelander, before there was Homelander, all the way down to the creepy sexual fetish.

Also kind of a funky twist to have a telepath/telekinetic, the X-Men's go-to good-gal psychic build, be the bad-guy here.

(Then again, the heroes included a matter chameleon and a gravity controller, which, at the time, were villain-exclusive to Absorbing Man and Graviton, over at Marvel, in those days before Gravity and Fuse, etc.)

BLISS (Nicole Callahan)
Created By:
Jim Lee, Brandon Choi & J. Scott Campbell
First Appearance: Gen¹³ #1 (Feb. 1994)
Role: Mega-Slut
Marvel Character Most Ripped Off: Shinobi Shaw (kind of a female version, I guess)
'90s Ratio: 9/10 (wears a different skimpy outfit every issue; tries to bang her own brother; tries to bang every male)
Group Affiliations: DV8
PL 8 (97)
STRENGTH
1 STAMINA 2 AGILITY 4
FIGHTING 6 DEXTERITY 4
INTELLIGENCE 1 AWARENESS 1 PRESENCE 3

Skills:
Athletics 4 (+5)
Deception 2 (+5, +7 Attractive)
Expertise (Government Agent) 6 (+7)
Insight 2 (+3)
Perception 2 (+3)
Persuasion 2 (+5, +7 Attractive)

Advantages:
Attractive

Powers:
Mind Control 8 (32) -- [34]
  • AE: "Agitate Mental State" Affliction 8 (Will; Dazed & Hindered/Stunned & Defenseless/Incapacitated & Dying) (Extras: Perception-Ranged +2, Extra Condition) (32)
  • AE: "Telekinesis" Move Object 3 (6)
Offense:
Unarmed +6 (+1 Damage, DC 17)
Mental Powers -- (+8 Perception-Ranged Damage, DC 18)
Initiative +4

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +2, Fortitude +4, Will +4

Complications:
Addiction (Controlling Others)- Bliss grew up weird thanks to being raised by I/O- she is now obsessed with controlling others, especially men. She even seeks to hit on her own brother.

Total: Abilities: 44 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 1 / Powers: 34 / Defenses: 9 (97)

-Threshold's sister, Bliss, is a HUGE example of the 1990s- wearing a different skimpy outfit every issue (the creators confess this is deliberate in their creators' notes in the back of the first TPB), she surrounds herself with shirtless manservants, and she hits on both male adversaries and HER OWN BROTHER. And her powers are to mind control people into banging her. Which, for whatever reason, is always a power that ends up on someone so mega-hot they should never really REQUIRE such a power in the first place, but comics gonna comic. In any case, it's implied that both Bliss & Threshold have mental problems from I/O raising them, as both were kidnapped as small children after their parents were shot by I/O agents. Part of her backstory apparently includes sexual assault at the hands of a guard, which is a "Freudian Excuse" for how she seeks to manipulate everyone around her now.

-In any case, the first arc of Gen¹³ paints her as a bit of a doofus, as she hits on her brother, hits on Burnout, then is easily defeated by Rainmaker and she's used as as hostage to get her brother to give up- Threshold simply tosses her onto his back and carries her off, making her look like an idiot. She later became a member of DV8, being put in charge of it by Ivana Baiul, much to her chagrin- Bliss enjoyed field work. Bliss later left DV8 with Evo, who was becoming obsessed with her thanks to Bliss's repeated attempts at altering his mind- they formed a crime syndicate together until Evo was arrested. Bliss then went off on her own.

-Bliss is a total wimp who can't stand up to any kind of physical threat, but she has PL 8-level Mind Control powers, which can be rather devastating in a low-Will environment like Image Comics.

I would say that the two of them owe a great deal to Fenris, or possibly a nast--wait, this is Image, that's superfluous--version of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +4, Fortitude +6, Will +4

Complications:
Responsibility (Power Regulation)- Frostbite requires a regulator to avoid drawing too much heat.

Total: Abilities: 52 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 0 / Powers: 25 / Defenses: 9 (95)

-Frostbite was one of many Gen-Active kids cryogenically frozen and later thawed out to form DV8. He started a relationship with Sublime, having been deeply disturbed by a sexual encounter with Bliss, and starts to think negatively of the endless dark actions the team has undertaken. He desired to atone for his crimes, and leave DV8, but the new boss convinced him to stay, as the others couldn't make it in the real world, and looked up to him. He was de-powered during a mission against a villain named Anthrax, who used his addictive touch on him, but stayed on to try and remove Ivana Baiul from the DV8 organization. His death was faked and he conspired against Ivana, then regained his powers.

-Frostbite is a pretty generic Blaster, adding a Snare to it.

Group Affiliations: DV8
PL 8 (90)

Advantages:

Powers:
Mind Control 8 (Flaws: Must Physically Copy Every Action She Takes) [24]

Offense:
Unarmed +8 (+2 Damage, DC 17)
Mind Control -- (+8 Perception-Ranged Affliction, DC 18)
Initiative +4

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +4

Complications:
Disabled (Multiple Personalities)- Copycat's brain has ceased to function properly after an extra-nasty dose of mind control from Bliss. She alternates between four different personas.

Total: Abilities: 48 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 0 / Powers: 24 / Defenses: 9 (90)

-Copycat is a mind-controller with split personalities who had been railroaded into joining DV8 with the other Gen-Active kids. She didn't take anything seriously, and tended to just mess around, but an incident involving Bliss controlling her led to four separate personalities taking hold in her body, making even her own teammates think she was dangerous and unstable. She had "Soldier" (rough & tough bad-ass who does whatever she wants to win), "Nihilist" (paranoid who hated anyone and everything, including herself), "Spy" (cold analyst) and "Gemma" (five-year old whiny kid). She was captured at one point, and later rendered comatose by Threshold when he turned on the team. Her real mind started to heal once she woke up- the link between her and Bliss broken. She later tried to have a normal life.

-Copycat is a "Possession"-type character who controls minds, but the victims must physically copy every action she takes. She will usually only take control of one person at a time.

EVO (Michael Heller)
Created By:
Jim Lee, Brandon Choi & J. Scott Campbell
First Appearance: Gen¹³ #6 (Nov. 1995)
Role: Animal Morpher
Marvel Character Most Ripped Off: Morbius (looks kinda similar; bat thing)
'90s Ratio: 6/10 (animal powers & claws)
Group Affiliations: DV8
PL 7 (90)

FIGHTING 8 DEXTERITY 4
INTELLIGENCE 0 AWARENESS 1 PRESENCE -1

Skills:
Athletics 3 (+6)
Deception 3 (+5)
Expertise (Government Agent) 5 (+5)
Insight 2 (+3)
Perception 5 (+6)

Advantages:
Fast Grab, Improved Critical (Natural Weapons), Improved Trip, Startle

Powers:
"Evo-Shifting"
"Wolf Form" Enhanced Strength & Stamina 4, Speed 3, Senses 6 (Acute & Extended Scent, Low-Light Vision, Scent-Tracking, Ultra & Extended Hearing) (25) -- [27]
  • AE: "Bat Form" Enhanced Strength & Stamina 2, Flight 5 (Winged), Senses 3 (Low-Light Vision, "Sonar"- Accurate Hearing) (17)
  • AE: "Aquatic Form" Enhanced Strength & Stamina 2, Swimming 5, Movement (Environmental Adaptation- Aquatic), Senses 1 (Low-Light Vision) (16)
Offense:
Unarmed +8 (+2 Damage, DC 17)
Bat & Aquatic Form +8 (+4 Damage, DC 19)
Wolf Form +8 (+6 Damage, DC 21)
Initiative +4

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +4

Complications:
Reputation (Unlikable)- Evo has a rep for being uncontrollably savage and a drug addict- even his own teammates dislike him.

Total: Abilities: 42 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 27 / Defenses: 9 (91)

-Evo was a young man with "dark impulses" even before he got recruited into DV8, and he got even worse with their hedonistic lifestyle. With the ability to transform into humanoid animals, he urinated on things he wanted to claim, and got so weird that the rest of his teammates ignored him. He began to "relish killing and the use of drugs", and was captured by the NYPD when DV8 ended, ending up in jail. Later, during the prison riot that killed the members of Wildcore, he attempted to turn over a new leaf, saving the life of the hero Backlash.

-Evo is semi-versatile, but the weakest member of his team. He has the always-questionable ability of "Alternate Forms", which can be broken if you simply let someone choose any number of super-powers to deal with any threat imaginable, but in most types of media, is rather limited to situations like this- a Flying Form, an Aquatic Form, and a Combat Form.

I love this sort of powerset. Three not-incredibly tough characters in one, allowing someone to be the winged flier, or the finny swimmer, or the scrappy furry without that being your entire niche. It's not nearly as versatile as someone like Absorbing Man (gas form, liquid form, metal form, energy form) or an actual full-on shapeshifter, but still cool, the 'all-terrain vehicle' of builds.

Although a reptile/saurian version, perhaps based on the old Morlock/Tunneler Scaleface, giving her the ability to turn into a giant komodo dragon for ground combat, a sea serpent for aquatic use, and a pterodon-type for aerial utility, could be fun.

Yeah, it can be used for a lot of stuff. On a more well-developed character, it can turn into a Ben 10 kind of a thing for a solo star, or something more like this, here. With only three forms, he can't step on anyone's toes and be a "Bullrog" ("I told you- Bullrog has lots and lots of powers").
