The blue suit, yellow gloves and red hair reminds me of DC's Rusty
Image

Rusty was the partner to the shield-wielding Americommando. They along with Barracuda, Fireball & Sparky were the members of the Crusaders, a team of golden age heroes that fought the Freedom Fighters (Uncle Sam, Doll-Man. Phantom Lady, the Ray, Black Condor, and the Human Bomb)

During the same period of time, in the Invaders comic a team of golden age heroes called the Crusaders (Spirit of '76, Dyna-Mite, Ghost Girl, Tommy Lightning, Captain Wings, Thunderfist) fought the Invaders (Captain America, Bucky, Sub-mariner, Human Torch & Toro).

Probably one of the best executed non-teamups between the two companies.

Oh, that's interesting. Makes me wonder how deliberate that was- they added some Bucky elements to the "Nomad" design as well.

The Red Skulls

Post by Jabroniville »

Albert Malik, the Godless Commie Red Skull.

THE RED SKULL I-IV:
-Yes, even the RED SKULL has had multiple incarnations, though most were retcons.

THE RED SKULL I (Johann Schmidt):
-Named as the original Skull- the right-hand-man of Adolf Hitler and a truly evil villain who even disgusts other bad guys.

THE RED SKULL II (George John Maxon):
-After the "original" Skull had been killed, they realized they had a popular villain on their hands, and so that was just an imposter. So this American traitor was established as the phony one who died.

THE RED SKULL III (Albert Malik):
-When "Captain America- Commie Smasher" was explained away, they needed to justify why his old enemy, also said to be in suspended animation until the 1960s, was in those stories as well. The "Communist Red Skull" was thus this KGB agent. He has largely been not a major character, but was bizarrely used as the man who is responsible for the deaths of Peter Parker's birth parents, Richard & Mary. I posted the build in my Spidey bit: Red Skull III (Malik).

THE RED SKULL IV (Clone of Johann Schmidt- "Xavier's Brain" Version):
-With Johann being dead and Rick Remender wanting the character used for his new "Avengers Unity Squad" arcs in Uncanny Avengers, a CLONE of Schmidt was created, with his World War II memories being more recent. He dissected the brain of Charles Xavier and gave himself the Professor's vast telepathic powers, thus becoming what was supposed to be a recurring nemesis. Except he was just in the first arc, then a "Red Onslaught" thing that created the AXIS event, and then he was defeated at the end of Uncanny Avengers under a different writer, who had an unrelated team of heroes (Cable, Rogue and DEADPOOL?) defeat him by throwing Magneto's Anti-Psionic helmet onto Rogue- his brain had the Xavier elements removed and he was de-powered. Finally, in the Secret Empire arc, he had the Cosmic Cube turn Steve Rogers into a loyal agent of HYDRA... but this proved unwise, as Steve then killed him and took command himself.

THE RED SKULL II (George John Maxon)
Created By:
Joe Simon & Jack Kirby
First Appearance: Captain America Comics #1 (March 1941)
Role: Imposter Villain
Group Affiliations: The Nazis

-The "original" Red Skull in the comics, this one was killed off in the third issue of Captain America Comics in 1941, but was revealed to have been an imposter- an American businessman who sided with the Nazis and was a spy ringleader. He is thought dead once, but dies right away.

One of the great, weird Kirby designs.

ARNIM ZOLA
Created By:
Jack Kirby
First Appearance: Captain America #208 (April 1977)
Role: Evil Geneticist
Group Affiliations: None
PL 8 (149), PL 9 (149) Scientist
STRENGTH
6 STAMINA -- AGILITY 0
FIGHTING 6 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE 8 AWARENESS 3 PRESENCE 1

Skills:
Deception 6 (+7)
Expertise (Science) 11 (+19)
Insight 2 (+5)
Intimidation 2 (+3)
Investigation 2 (+5)
Perception 2 (+5)
Technology 10 (+18)
Treatment 6 (+14)
Vehicles 5 (+5)

Advantages:
Equipment 5 (Lab), Ranged Attack 8, Skill Mastery (Science), Ultimate Science Skill

Powers:
"Robotic Body"
Immunity 30 (Fortitude Effects) [30]
Protection 8 [8]
"Beams to Another Body" Immortality 2 (1 week) (Quirks: Must Have Alternate Body Ready) [3]

"Controls Creations" Mind Control 10 (Will; Entranced/Compelled/Controlled) (Feats: Mental Link) (Flaws: Limited to His Own Creations -2) [21]

Offense:
Unarmed +6 (+6 Damage, DC 21)
Initiative +0

Defenses:
Dodge +7 (DC 17), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +8, Fortitude --, Will +7

Complications:
Motivation (Science!)- Zola is a purely evil scientist, doing genetic experiments for the fun of it. He loves discovery, and cares not for any innocents who suffer.
Weakness (Electrical & Magnetic Attacks)- Zola's android body contains many metal implements, and will be highly vulnerable to either source of attack.
Enemy (Captain America)

Total: Abilities: 38 / Skills: 46--23 / Advantages: 15 / Powers: 62 / Defenses: 11 (149)

-Arnim Zola is a classic Kirby creation- a big ol' android with a huge human face projected onto the torso, with a tiny lil' robo-head on top. Just ugly and crazy as hell- a perfect embodiment of the wildness of the "House of Ideas" under Kirby's care.

-Curiously, though, Zola was created AFTER Jack left and rejoined Marvel, and he went right for Captain America. He was another "Retcon Foe" of Cap's from WWII, being a Swiss biochemist who'd worked for the Nazis (his equipment was discarded Deviant technology). His master-stroke was creating a device that copied and could transfer somebody's brain-waves- essentially, permanent immortality as long as you had a copy (and in comics... there's always a copy). Using this gear, he successfully resurrected the Red Skull, himself, ADOLF HITLER, and any number of people as an easy "get out of death free" card. Appearing as his own villain at first, he largely just became a "Skull Minion", frequently appearing having created new clone bodies or something- Mark Gruenwald's run features him in this manner. His presence is a little "different" in most of the issues I have- he's your standard smug, overconfident bad guy, but is rarely humiliated or enraged like others are. He kind of just takes things as they go- his joy is simply the building of stuff.

-Zola is briefly in Thunderbolts, having kidnapped a bunch of orphaned children following the Onslaught massacre in New York City and giving them powers- one of them became Jolt. He was in Ed Brubaker's Cap run as a Skull Minion yet again, having his body destroyed by the Grand Director, a madman who was just lashing out at everyone at that point. He was a major figure in a recent Rick Remender arc that involved Cap being sent into a Parallel Universe (my friend says it was REALLY BORING)- a "Dimension Z" ruled by Zola. Cap rescues and adopts a clone of Zola named Ian, raising him and an army that defeats Zola and his daughter- Jet Black. That world's Sharon Carter sacrifices herself to kill Zola, and even Jet reforms. Zola, unperturbed in the main universe, allies with HYDRA during Secret Empire, but is taken apart by the "Superior Octopus" (Otto Octavius) when he turns on Ock when it's clear the villain plans to leave HYDRA- Otto outsmarts him and takes him down.

-Zola's certainly no fighter (I can't recall a single story where he even threw a punch), but a brilliant inventor, up there with all the other super-scientists in the Marvel Universe, and as such he's a real smartie-pants. He can also control all of his own creations (a highly-Limited Mind Control effect), and can beam himself to available techno-bodies if his current one is destroyed.

So, she was in a stable, monogamous relationship for nearly two decades, then had exactly one less than consensual encounter, and so later writers flanderized her as being not able to keep it in her pants?

-Doughboys are Arnim Zola's primary henchmen, and they're REALLY tricky for most superhumans to defeat- effectively invincible to certain types of harm, they're like dumb, lower-level Sandmans... Sandmen. They're quite fun as Mooks, being unfeeling, smiling henchmen who just float about as large balls of mobile dough with arms- good Kirby goons. One appeared to defend Zola in his first appearance, and later got merged with some entity named "Primus" and became powerful, but later this was done away with and Zola just had a regular loyal Doughboy again. It temporarily imprisoned Cap and Thor (Erik Masterson) in Mark Gruenwald's Cap run, before Thor was able to stop him, and it later defended Zola when the Thunderbolts came to attack him.

-Doughboy is a uniquely-dangerous villain, being somewhat unimpressive physically, but being EXTREMELY hard to defeat, and having extremely dangerous countermeasures to beating physical superheroes. His sticky, tacky body will adhere to and imprison anyone dumb enough to attack him in melee, and it's such a problem that Cap (whose shield would stick in Doughboy's "skin") would have actually DIED in the Gru issue, had Thor not been around. And Hell, THOR took upwards of a minute to break out of Doughboy, and then had to repeatedly pummel away at the damn thing, because it just kept reforming! This makes it a highly-expensive, dangerous PL 9 Mook.

The Exiles

THE EXILES
Created By:
Stan Lee & Jack Kirby
First Appearance: Tales of Suspense #41 (May 1963- possible old allies seen), Captain America #104 (June 1964- confirmed)
Role: Exiled Axis Powers, Jobbers
Group Affiliations: The Axis Powers

-Marvel's original Exiles, these guys are a band of arseholes who fought on behalf of the Axis Powers during World War II (allying with the Red Skull), then hid away on an island in the Sargasso Sea until modern times. Curiously, none were Japanese- instead, we had a Chinese man and a RUSSIAN on the team. Odd, as both of their homelands were the invaded enemies of the Reich and Empire of Japan. It's theoretically-possible that they still fought on the side of the Axis, of course (there were probably plenty of traitors and turncoats who allied with the "new powers"- think Inspector Renault in Casablanca), but still a bit odd that nobody would mention this in ANY of their stories. The obvious "out-of-story" reasoning for this is of course that China and Russia were enemies of the United States AT THE TIME THE STORY WAS WRITTEN- so now they'd joined the other "evil" nations. But still, there's no Japanese man on the team to go along with the Italian & German. So really, two of the four main Exiles were from non-Axis nations.

-When the Red Skull returned from suspended animation, he immediately recruited his old allies for a mission- by the Sixties, they would have aged a mere twenty years; nowadays, you begin to wonder how in hell they were all still around in such great shape. They captured Sharon Carter and Captain America, but he broke out when the group argued with the Skull over who would control which part of the world (they'd put a piece of "nuclear tape" on Cap to make him do their bidding or they'd blow up Washington with a bomb).

-The next year, in 1969, they started hating the Skull, as he refused to share his Cosmic Cube's power with them, then sent Cap (who was trapped in the Skull's body) to their island, hoping they'd attack him. This story actually led to the debut of The Falcon, as SkullCap took off his mask (so nobody would recognize him) and had to train his new ally against the Exiles.

-In a bizarre story in Astonishing Tales a couple of years later, they again teamed with the Skull in order to conquer LATVERIA while Doctor Doom was vacationing in the Riviera. They gassed him and knocked him unconscious when he returned (!!), then paraded him around the town square... then his power absorbed enough solar radiation to "power up" again, and he kicked all of their asses quickly. You would NEVER see Doom humiliated like that by mere goons later on. Doom hypnotized them into making them think they were a few inches tall, then dumped them back on the Island of Exiles. The group went decades without seeing the light of day (a gap from 1971-2010! Nearly forty years!) until a recent set where Baron Zemo encountered some in a minor alliance, and then in a 2011 Bendis Avengers story when Sin (the Red Skull's daughter) sent them and Master Man against Captain America and some allies- this was more or less their swan song, as two were killed on-panel (Victoria Hand shot General Ching through the head; Sharon Carter shot Iron Hand through the chest), and the others presumed dead after S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Daisy "Quake" Johnson used her powers to demolish their castle.

-The Exiles aren't great fighters on their own- as a unit, they can challenge Captain America, but generally have to cheat. Their main advantage comes from their high-tech island (it has "Mechanical Kelp" to attack the heroes), and numerous soldiers that fight on their side. They're just such a wild, goofy assortment of guys, though- the classic "Kirby Kretins". Lumpy, ugly, malformed and bulky, they make ideal "Glorified Mooks".

-A really goofy character, Baldini uses SCARVES as weapons, using them to bludgeon and grapple with people. However, he attempts to finish the job by tying it into knots (so, like rolling up a sock so it hurts a little more?), leaving him open to counter-attack. He is presumed dead after a castle was collapsed on him by S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Daisy "Quake" Johnson.
