-Shrews make up an astonishing 385 species in the family Soricidae, in the Order Eulipotyphla- the fourth-most successful mammal family after bats and two types of rodents. They are typically called "True Shrews" to differentiate them from treeshrews, otter shrews, elephant shrews, or the West Indies shrews, which belong to different families or orders... see what I mean about nomenclature and classification being difficult? The animals are famously disliked, with their name being used as an insult for a particular kind of female- bitchy, annoying and aggravating- always insulting and rude.

-Shrews look similar to rodents, being about the same tiny size (the smallest terrestrial mammal on Earth is the Etruscan Shrew- only 1.4 inches long and 1.8 grams), but they are not any more related to them that cats, dogs, or primates are. Shrews have spiky, sharp teeth instead of the gnawing incisors of rodent species- the teeth are often dark red owing to iron content in the enamel. They live almost all across the world- only Australia, New Zealand & New Guineau have no natural species on the temperate world. Shrews are foragers with a voracious appetite, owing to a furious metabolic rate- they will eat 1/2 to 2 times their own body weight in food daily, if necessary. They live 12-30 months, and can breed as often as ten times a year.

-This is a pretty basic Shrew- tiny and useless in a game, and like a Mouse with poorer vision. Typically they're only a threat to tiny creatures like insects and worms, or other Shrews- males are incredibly territorial.

-Incredibly, two Generas (Sorex & Blarina) of Shrews are able to echolocate- "see" their surroundings through hearing. Of the terrestrial mammals, only these, Bats, Tenrecs & Solenodons can do this. The Common Shrew, Northern Short-Tailed Shrew and others will emit a series of ultrasonic squeaks, but it's not as advanced as a Bat's- it is typically only used to detect surroundings, not hunt and locate prey. Its low Perception largely ensures that it's fairly low-tier in terms of great sense-possessing animals.

-Gymnures, colloquially called "Moonrats", are a type of animal closely related to Hedgehogs and Shrews, though they superficially resemble Rats, being somewhat larger and long-nosed. Hideously ugly, they are thought to resemble the earliest known mammals in terms of body plan, with large, toothy heads (about 1/3 the length of the total body), a naked tail for thermoregulation, and a plantigrade (ie. flat-footed, knees bending forward) stance. Carnivorous, they eat mice, arthropods, small reptiles and amphibians.

-The Moonrat is the only species in the genus Echinosorex, and is closely related to the Gymnures & Hedgehogs. They are fairly large for this family, being Rat-like in size- about 2 lbs. or so. Like Gymnures, they are carnivorous. They give off a very strong ammonia-like scent when threatened. They are found in Borneo and neighboring regions like Myanmar, Thailand & Sumatra.

-Native only to the island of Madagascar, Tenrecs are small, Shrew-like creatures that, thanks to convergent evolution, can resemble Hedgehogs, Shrews, Opossums, Rats or Mice. They occupy many different habitats, and are all generally small- going from 5 grams to 2.2 lbs.- a difference of 200 times. They can have the most babies of any mammal- as many as 32 babies in a single litter! Their closest living relatives are the Otter Shrews. Unlike most placental mammals, their urinary tract and butthole end through the same opening. In all, there are 31 species in the Family "Tenrecidae".

Tenrec Types:
LARGE-EARED TENREC: A unique family of its own, these are tiny and greatly resemble mice.
SHREW TENREC: Named for their similarity to shrews- the vast majority of the family are called "Shrew Tenrecs".
RICE TENREC: Two types are known- living near irrigated farmlands, hence the name.

-The Common, or Tailless Tenrec, is the largest of the family- these can weigh up to 4 lbs. They hunt larger animals than other Tenrecs would, such as rodents & amphibians. Known for an extremely loud scream, they are more intimidating than other Tenrecs as well. +1 isn't much to most people, but it can be enough for animals.

-A few types of Tenrec are rather spiky. Like with Hedgehogs, this is a Limited Aura effect- too weak to be anything but an annoyance to a creature as large as a human, but dangerous and disabling to smaller creatures. And remember that in the wild, even a minor injury can prove fatal or disabling.

Examples:
GREATER & LESSER HEDGEHOG TENREC: Named for their close resemblance to Hedgehogs, they are very spiky, and popular in the pet trade in certain areas- among the only members of this Order to look cute.
STREAKED TENREC: Extremely bizarre-looking, these striped creatures are shrew-like but sport sparse, very long quills.

-Solenodons are primitive, venomous insect-eating animals, and are so freaking old that they split off from Shrews, Hedgehogs and Moles before the Cretaceous-Paleogone Extinction Event! Very few members of the genus are left, and the remaining animals are usually Endangered, living only on a few scattered islands in the Caribbean. Having a low reproductive rate and never having evolved near dogs, cats or many rodents, they were very vulnerable to the arrival fo Europeans. They are so rare that only 36 Cuban Solenodons have ever been caught, and were thought extinct because eighty years went by without a sighting.

-Solenodons are among the only venomous mammals, and their name is taken from their "grooved" teeth which delivery a neurotoxic venom that can kill small prey. Symptoms include general depression, breathing difficulty, paralysis, and convulsions. This venom makes them PL 2, but only to tiny creatures- no human would be adversely effected.

-The Hedgehogs, containing 17 species, are the cutest of what was once called "Insectivora", and are related to Shrews & Gymnures. They are found throughout Africa & Eurasia, and are famous as spiny critters who curl into a ball when threatened- they give the inspiration for Sonic the Hedgehog, gaming's most famous "Animal With Attitude". Pet hedgehogs are typically hybrids of of the Four-Toed & North African Hedgehogs, as they are smaller than the common European Hedgehog. Some Hedgehogs will engage in a practice called "anointing"- when encountering a new smell, they will for a froth in their mouth with the scent, and place it all over their quills. The reasons behind this are unknown. Hedgehogs consume fruit, insects and small animals.

-Moles are the most famous digging animals in the world, and are specialized for a subterranean lifestyle. Considered pests for their destructive hole-digging around human habitations, Moles do this to enable many pathways to find earthworms to eat. Moles have a slightly paralytic toxin in their saliva that can stun worms for days, allowing them to create "larders" of food to eat later. There are 51 different species of Moles, all being very small- even the biggest are only about half a pound. They live all over the world, with "Old World" and "New World" moles looking pretty well alike, and have numerous variants in many particular countries, especially in China & Japan.

-Moles are perfectly-adapted for underground living- poor eyesight, tiny or absent ears, excellent other senses, and even backwards-pointing penises! Their front limb bones are extremely large compared to their tiny back ones, allowing them powerful digging muscles, and they can double back upon themselves in their tiny burrows.

Mole Types:
EASTERN MOLE: As good a "generic mole" as you're going to get, this hails from the Eastern United States.
EUROPEAN MOLE: Looks almost identical to the Eastern Mole, despite living in Europe- pretty widespread, this is probably the source for Mole from The Wind in the Willows.

Image

SHREW MOLES: A subtype of Moles, these are the smallest,
and sport elongated, shrew-like snouts, hence the name.

Image

GOLDEN MOLES: Strangely, there are 21 species of Golden Moles- animals almost identical moles, but in a different family: the Chrysochloridae (they are more closely related to Otter Shrews & Tenrecs). 11 of the 21 species are Endangered. Their eyes are non-functional- covered over by furred skin, very rare among mammals.

Assuming a European Mole, 5.28 x 10^22 kg. Not quite the size of the Earth or Moon, but a fair-sized asteroid.

-There are two types of Desmans, both heavily Endangered- the Russian & Pyrenean Desmans. Both are part of the Mole family. They live in groups of 2-5, and construct burrows by ponds and slow-moving streams, allowing them to eat small arthropods (bugs & crayfish) and amphibians. It is functionally blind, and has touch-sensitive organs in the end of its snout, along with webbed feet and a flattened tail, meaning it is semi-aquatic and can still find its way about. Easily the largest species of Mole, they weight about 400-520 g. Their luxurious fur used to be highly sought after in the fur trade, but they are now quite rare. Pyrenean Desmans are much smaller (80 grams max).

-Desmans are effectively just "Aquatic Moles", differentiating little otherwise.
