Re: Jab's Animal Builds (Zebras! Quagga! Pegasus! Unicorn!)

Post by Davies »

One interesting thing about The Last Unicorn is that its text makes it really clear that unicorns don't actually look anything like horses, and that humans see them as horses because they can't imagine anything looking like a unicorn actually does. Yet every image from the movie or the book cover is entirely a stock horned horse. From hints in the book, I think the ones therein probably more closely resemble antelope or reindeer.

Another interesting thing about the book is that it really interrogates the idea of purity as equivalent to goodness. All the unicorns fled from the Red Bull, never even trying to fight it, and were eventually chased into the sea. It takes an impure unicorn, who's known things that no unicorn has ever known, to defeat the Bull -- because the Bull itself doesn't fight, only chase.

-Hippocampi are rarely-seen, especially since we've grown accustomed to more natural sea-faring "Mounts" in fiction like Sharks, Dolphins, etc. Face it, you see Aquaman riding something, it's probably gonna be a Whale or Shark. Something as weird as a horse with forefins and a big fish-tail kind of stands out as bizarre these days, despite being actually pretty cool. They're not a big part of mythology, coming out during the Etruscan era, and mostly being used for heraldic stuff since then. It's basically an Elite Horse plus sea-faring ability.

Tapirs

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

All Tapirs are striped and spotted as babies.

SUPERFAMILY- TAPIROIDEA (Order: Perrisodactyla):
-The Tapirs are goofy-looking to the extreme, but are a shining example of the proof of continental divide- how else would an animal simultaneously exist in East Asia AND South & Central America? Curiously, the seem to exist in some rare divide between "Cute, Cuddly Monster" and "Nightmare Fuel Hellbeast" -- they'll look silly and pig-like in one picture, and then in the next they're revealing a horrific set of gums beneath this large craning nose. The mini-trunk is the hallmark of the Family, used to grab at stuff. All four recognized families are highly-endangered thanks to habitat loss, and they're preyed upon mainly by the Big Cats and large reptiles (The Anaconda & Crocodile).

-The closest animals to them are the Rhinos- this seems obvious given their body and head-shape. The Order Perrissodactyla is made up of "Odd-Toed Ungulates", consisting of Rhinos, Tapirs, and Horses (who are more distantly-related). Tapirs are considered a "living fossil", as they have changed little over 35 million years- animals with long upper lips used to be a lot more common in olden times. There are four species of Tapir- the Malayan (the largest- 1,190 lbs. maximum!), the South American (the least-endangered- 550 lbs. maximum), the Mountain (330 lbs.- lives in the moutnains of Chile), and Baird's Tapir (880 lbs.). Unusually among ungulates, females are usually bigger than males.

-Tapirs are big and goofy, but be warned -- they CAN do one hell of a lot of damage if they get angry. One poor zookeeper in Oklahoma City actually had her ARM SEVERED when she opened the door of its enclosure to feed it. They're as big and strong as your large Deer or Wild Boars, and are not to be messed with. Still, in nature they tend to avoid contact with most things, and Crocs & Jaguars can still take them, so they're your standard PL 5 big animals- mightier than an Elk, but less so than a Moose or the PL 7s in the Leopard/Jaguar range.

Disabled (Poor Eyesight)- Malayan Tapirs have very cloudy corneas, thought to be due to repeated exposure to sunlight.
Rivalry (Other Males)- Like moost hoofed animals, Tapirs must compete with other males for mating rights.

Total: Abilities: 10 / Skills: 14--7 / Advantages: 0 / Powers: 8 / Defenses: 8 (33)

Era: Modern
Range: Southeast Asia, Central & South America
Stereotypes: None (too unknown).

Size: Up to 7-8 feet long (300-1,190 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary and territorial
Diet: Grass & vegetation.
Tactics: Maul with teeth, run into the water if scared.

-The Malayan Tapir is the only Asian species still alive- the largest of them, they are distinct for the giant white patches near their rumps. Most of their threats are due to habitat loss- they are rarely eaten in Muslim Sumatra, owing to their similarity to pigs (non-halal), and are too big for anything but the bravest Tigers to hunt. The extinct Giant Tapir of Asia was around the same size- 1,100 lbs.

-Tapirs vary greatly in size, even among their own species, with some being double the weight of others. Therefore, this or the prior build will do for them, depending on size. This variant is PL 4.5- slightly weaker overall.

Small Tapirs:
MOUNTAIN TAPIR: The most endangered Tapir species, these are distinct for being the only one to not live in tropical rainforests- because of this, they have dark, woolly coats. They're also distinct for having white lips. They usually weight between 200-500 lbs.

Image
Image

SOUTH AMERICAN TAPIR: The largest mammal remaining in the Amazon rainforest- they are the most populous and widespread Tapir, covering much of Brazil and being only listed as "Vulnerable". Typically 300-700 lbs.

BAIRD'S TAPIR: The Central American Tapir, typically weighing 300-800 lbs.

LITTLE BLACK TAPIR: This animal was only discovered in 2013, which, if it turns out to be a unique species and not just a variant of South American Tapir, would make it the most recently-discovered large mammal, and the only new odd-toed ungulate described in over 100 years!

Rhino Family

Post by Jabroniville »

RHINOCEROTIDAE FAMILY (Order- Perissodactyla)
-Yeah, obviously, these are the Rhinos. Most of them are pretty much the same-looking creature, just with small variations in size. They're descended from ancient megafauna that extended as far as North America, but now exist in super-tiny pockets in Africa & Asia. Sadly, their famous horn has led to them being over-hunted to near-extinction, and various subspecies are as near-death as you can possibly get in this world. I love these things, though- much more epic and noble than the fearsome (and similarly-sized) Hippo, the Rhinoceros is a powerful symbol, and the Family includes what is the second-largest land animal in the world. And htey are FURIOUSLY bad-ass- I've watched clips of Rhinos effortlessly beating the bejeezus out of a Cape Buffalo, to the point of TEARING OUT ITS EYE, and leaving it to eventually succumb to its injuries. These things EASILY fend off what is essentially a more bad-ass version of a full-sized Bull.

Danger to Humans: Jesus, you have to ask? Rhinos are FAMOUSLY-grouchy (though actually less-so than Hippos), and their terrible eyesight means they tend to just charge things that they can detect via hearing and scent... JUST in case it's something negative. I mean, it's a Rhino, what's he got to fear? The only things that can kill them physically are Elephants (and this does in fact happen), and their only other enemy is us. Unfortunately, they are REALLY easy to hunt and kill, as they mostly just stand there, and rarely run away. Some Rhinos can weigh more than 8,000 lbs., and can run at 45 mph (that's faster than you). Their infamous horns can basically kill anything walking the Earth in one shot if they're accurate, and they'll just stomp all over anything that survives.

Temper- Rhinos are notoriously ornery, though generally timid. Most are prone to sudden charges, however most are "bluffs".

Tactics: Gore with a massive horned-charge.

-Sumatran Rhinos are the smallest Rhinos, being "only" 1,760 pounds at maximum (in the wild; in zoos, they can weigh more than 4,000!). They're basically smaller, weaker version of their older cousins, though are possibly the only surviving descendant of the Woolly Rhinoceros, their fuzzy outer-skin giving them away. They are quite adept at surviving in nearly any condition Southeast Asia can throw at them, being known to swim, wallow, traverse mountains, etc. Like most Asian animals, they are at tremendous risk thanks to Chinese Medicine. Seriously, look at the ranges of nearly every large almost-extinct animal in the world, and they are almost always in the "Circle of Doom", centered on China. The total surviving numbers of these animals in the wild is less than 275, and they're notoriously hard to breed in zoos- the species may in fact be completely doomed. That they're so widely scattered that care for them, or even recording of data, is difficult, doesn't help.

-The Sumatran Rhino is the lowest-PL of the Rhino builds, being only PL 6- equivalant to some of the largest of other animal types.

-Closely related to the Indian Rhinoceros is the Javan Rhino, as you can see by its patchwork-style armor. Only males have horns (females are the only rhinos not to possess them in adulthood), and they are considered the most endangered rhino species- only 68-74 are known to survive in Java, Indonesia! Poaching, habitat loss and a lack of thriving in breeding have all added up to nearly doom the species, which already has a critical lack of diversity in its gene pool. Solitary and unwilling to associate with humans, they are therefore hard to find and study.

-Javan Rhinos once lived between Assam & Bengal, and would have overlapped with both Sumatran & Indian Rhinos. Unlike other rhinos, they do not appear to use the horns for fighting (they instead bite with their incisors and thrust their heads upwards), but to get at vegetation and scrape mud off while wallowing.

-The largest Rhino of Asia, the Indian Rhino is bigger than the Black, but smaller than the White. They are famous for their armor-like "plates", constructed because of prominent folds in their skin more than anything. The famous woodblock engraving by Albrecht Durer had a sensational effect on art at the time, but is highly imaginative, complete with a shoulder-horn, literal rivets & armor-plating, and fanciful sharp-edged parts throughout. The Indian & Javan Rhinos are not closely related to other species, occupying their own genus "Rhinoceros". Despite being listed as Vulnerable, and being one of the closest Rhinos to China (who lovvvvvvvvvve to use boner pills made from Rhino horn), they are the second most populous Rhino species remaining, after the Whites.

These are still Critically Endangered (three subspecies were declared extinct in 2011), and are extremely large, heavy-duty animals- many of them are kept under 24/7 armed protection. Not really black, they are differentiated from the White Rhino by having a pointed, prehensile lip to allow for easier browsing in the threes (as opposed to grass, which White Rhinos eat). Black Rhinos are INCREDIBLY-violent animals, with specimens being known to charge termite mounds or even TREES! They also have the highest combat-related mortality rates of any mammal- 50% of all males, and 30% of females, are killed in scraps with their own species! Now THAT is hardcore!

-Black Rhinos are tough, strong, PL 8 creatures, doing damage equal to many elite superheroes. They're smaller than Indian Rhinos, but not enough to create a lot of statistical variance- a thousand pounds here or there, sure; but a different matter with enormous animals.

But really, is there any doubt, that the tree had it coming?
Or the termite mound?

Wow, that entire area is full of jerkfaces. The rhino was just doing what it had to do.
We rise from the ashes so that new legends can be born.

I'm looking forward to the rhinoceros/elephant hybrid. You know what it's called?
