Rivalry (Other Males)- Like moost hoofed animals, Rhinos must compete with other males for mating rights.
Weakness (Poor Vision)- Rhinos have poor eyesight, and often miss things unless directly in front of them, and close by. This makes them easy to startle or sneak up on.
Temper- Rhinos are notoriously ornery, though generally timid. Most are prone to sudden charges, however most are "bluffs".

Total: Abilities: 12 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 29 / Defenses: 16 (77)

Era: Modern
Range: African savannah
Stereotypes: Big, stupid and aggressive.

Encounter Groups: Crashes of 2-14 (mostly female).
Diet: Grass & vegetation.
Tactics: Gore with a massive horned-charge.

-The White Rhino is actually the most-common Rhinorcerous in the wild, with a sense-shattering *17,000* out there, though the Northern variety is extinct in the wild (only five live in zoos). It is the largest modern-day Rhinoceros, known as the "Wide" Rhinoceros for it's distinctive square upper lip- its name possibly comes from a misunderstanding with the word the Dutch used for the animal. They are believed to be very important to the ecosystem where they live, as they graze constantly and will uproot vegetation- removing them may have cascading effects that negatively effect many other creatures. Though numerous by Rhino standards, they are still heavily poached- infamously, a zoo in FRANCE was broken into by poachers, who shot and killed a male White Rhino living there, removing one of its horns!

-An 8,000 pound MONSTER, the White Rhino PL 8.5 (higher than the Black Rhino), and maintains the same general statline as the Indian Rhinoceros. It's basically a bigger, tougher, meaner Black Rhino, capable of being an A-list Minion in it's own right. You think Dire Boars are awesome? Try a freaking RHINOCEROS coming at you with an armoured knight on top of it! I'm totally gonna bug a DM to let me make that my Paladin Mount for my next D&D game.

-The Woolly Rhinoceros is a pretty sweet extinct relative of the modern ones. Somewhat iconic to the prehistoric era of mammals, it's probably #3 behind the Mammoth & Sabre-Toothed Cats. Bones were found in medieval times, and one of which was thought to be the head of a Lindworm- Europeans unfamiliar with Rhinos (certainly ones that actually lived in Europe) were dumbfounded otherwise by such finds. The reasons for its extinction are unknown- it doesn't appear to be particularly hunted by man, but climate change alone doesn't explain its loss, as many other cold-adapted animals (Musk Ox, Reindeer) survived to modern times. The most iconic fossil specimen is a recent find- a Polish animal that was mummified by falling into a muddy bog, and was thus preserved right down to its skin and muscle. A cast now resides in the Natural History Museum in London.

-The Woolly Rhino is basically the same as a White Rhino (they're slightly bigger, but not enough to really change the stats), but is adapted to the cold.

Total: Abilities: 10 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 40 / Defenses: 17 (87)

Era: Pleistocene Epoch
Range: Eurasia
Stereotypes: Big, stupid and aggressive.
Colouring: Possibly red & woolly.
Size: Up to 16 feet long (Unknown weight- possibly in excess of 5 tons)
Encounter Groups: Solitary.
Diet: Grass & vegetation.
Tactics: Gore with a massive horned-charge.

-The Elasmotherium is "King of Rhinos", being a HUGE fifteen-foot monster with no mere nose horn. This thing was in the centre of the skull and stuck STRAIGHT UP. God only knows how powerful that kind of a horn could be, especially considering it's on the nose of a 5 ton animal. Elasmotheriums separated from the "Rhino" line 35 million years ago, and largely inhabited Central Asia. It is much less studied than Mammoths or Woolly Rhinos, being much rarer. It's still unclear just how long the horn on their head was, for instance, or just why they went extinct.

-The Elasmotherium is essentailly a ramped-up, PL 10 Rhino, sporting a devastating horn charge. The size of a Mammoth, it could generate dinosaur-tier power, and is statted accordingly.

Rivalry (Other Males)- Indricotheres probably duel other males for mating rights, given that every other herbivore of size does so.
Weakness (Poor Vision)- Indricotheres have poor eyesight, and often miss things unless directly in front of them, and close by.
Power Loss (Area Attack)- The Indricotherium is huge, but cannot use it's Area Attack against anything larger than Growth 5.

Total: Abilities: 4 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 57 / Defenses: 20 (99)

Era: Eocene/Oligocene
Range: Europe & Asia
Colouring: Unknown- likely grey.
Size: Up to 39 feet long (Unknown, possibly over 20 tons)
Encounter Groups: Medium herds.
Diet: Grass & vegetation.
Tactics: Charge and then slam, grinding to the ground with huge bulk.

-I loved these things as a kid, despite them being relatively unknown. Essentially, it's a distant ancestor of the Rhinoceros, but a bit larger. By "a bit", I mean it's 25+ feet long, stands taller than a house, and outweighs a FREAKING DIPLODOCUS. This is literally the largest land mammal ever discovered (only the whale family produces bigger specimens amongst mammals), and is so large that scientists believe it's as big as a warm-blooded animal could possibly get without overheating and dying. There is no predator in creation large enough to handle one of these, so they were likely untouched on the plains they inhabited. Physically, it is probably the most impressive specimen of any land mammal ever. Some name-changing has occured on this (I recall it always being Indricotherium for years, but scientific rules are rules and now it takes on the original name- various scientists in different countries had "discovered" some of them), but this name is coolest, so it's what I'm sticking with.

-Paraceratheriums are apparently browsers, though no complete skeleton has ever been discovered (For example, we've no evidence of their ribs or tails), so it's hard to truly assess a few things. Like Okapis and Giraffes, they likely browsed in treetops, covering massive areas. They could not run, but would be long-distance walkers, similar to elephants.

-These creatures are the largest, strongest mammals around, but only match the power of a Mammuthus in terms of most statistics (the difference at the 30-40 foot tall scale aren't enough to be worth an extra point of Damage, and are generally worse fighters, lacking Tusks, Trunks, or a major killer instinct- no animals could threaten them, so why should they learn how to fight? Its Area Attack does more damage, though, and it has Power Attack, which most Elephants lack, so there's that making up the stat difference. It's also +13 Toughness, giving them durability to match The Thing or Colossus. A gun simply isn't gonna do the trick, here.

-Desmostylians are the only known extinct order of marine mammals, and are probably most closely related to the Sirenians (Manatees) & Proboscideans (Elephants). However, another study puts them closer to the Rhino/Tapir/Horse line. In any case, they are short, squat, powerful aquatic quadrupeds with wide, flat heads. They're believed to have eaten by uprooting plants with their teeth and tusks and inhaling them via powerful throat muscles.

-I went with a generic Hippo-like build here, as these creatures are very poorly understood (we've only known semi-recently that they didn't have flippers and giant tails), and their sizes vary greatly. I've read that some reached the size of a Steller's Sea Cow (20+ feet long), while others were about 8 feet long.

Brontotheres

Post by Jabroniville »

BRONTOTHERES:
-The Brontotheres (also called Titanotheres) are another extinct type of Perissodactyls- ones extremely similar to Rhinos, but are actually more closely related to Horses. With four toes on their front feet and three on their rear, they inhabited much of North America, and are quite well-represented on the fossil record. Some were small, but most were extremely large- up to 8 feet tall, and they are well known for their nose-horns, which are often flat or oddly-shaped. Unlike rhinos, their horns are made of bone. Eating simpler vegetation, they likely went extinct due to the more coarse material that developed during the Oligocene.

-Extremely huge, the Megacerops is larger than any modern living rhino, and about the size of an African Forest Elephant- 8 feet tall and 16 feet long. Like all Brontotheres, they were browsing animals, and likely competed for females, judging by the fact that males had much larger nose horns than females did. The horns were small by Rhino standards, being short and very blunt.

-For stats, I made them equivalent to the Elasmotherium, but dropped the hitting power by a notch, owing to the smaller horns.

-Among the more distinctive extinct herbivores, the Chalicotheres are somewhat "iconic" in the sense that a preshistoric setting or documentary with some thought put into it will include some- lazy ones just use Mammoths & Sabre-Toothed Cats, but someone who REALLY knows there stuff will use them as a "Hey, look at THAT!" kind of creature. Simply put, nothing today looks remotely like this- they are large Perissodactyls related to Horses & Rhinos, yet have extremely long forelimbs and short, weight-bearing hindlimbs, resulting in them sitting on their haunches while browsing faraway leaves. With long claws, they would have made formidable opponents, and knuckle-walked around. They are believed to have gone extinct thanks to better, more efficient animals entering the fossil record, with Africa's apes and South America's Giant Sloths showing up thanks to both evolution and continental shifts.

-A Chalicothere is about as big as a mid-sized Rhino or Brontothere, so I gave them similar stats. Less of a combat focus, though their claws could definitely do some damage.

Artiodactyla

Post by Jabroniville »

ARTIODACTYLA (Even-Toed Ungulates):
-Similar to the Odd-Toed Ungulates, the Even-Toed ones are hoofed mammals with herbivorous tendencies. This grouping is MUCH more massive, however, featuring every large herbivore other than Rhinos, Tapirs & Horses. Inlcluded are the Camels, Bovines (including sheep, antelope & goats), Hippos, Giraffes, Elephants, Pigs & Deer. Distantly related are the Whales.

Camels

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

CAMELIDAE FAMILY (Order- Artiodactyla):
-Camels, Llamas, Alpacas & Guanacos are hilariously silly-looking creatures that have nonetheless been quite useful to humanity over the years, particularly for their desert-living ways, and the fact that many of them can carry humans on their backs. Camels make excellent mounts and weight-carriers (really important in the Middle East & Africa in the days before ATVs and Airplanes), and the other species all have great amounts of wool, handy for other things. For this reason, nearly all of the various species have been domesticated, leaving wild herds an extreme rarity. Be warned, though- despite not being fierce fighters (particularly compared to the rest of their Order), they have a nasty spit, and can still throw their weight around.

-Camels were once spread through Africa, Asia & North America, but the large Camels went extinct in North America around the time the Horses, Short-Faced Bear, Mammoths and other animals did, leaving only their smaller descendants, the Guanacos & Vicunas, in South America.

-Llamas are just silly (I mean, their scientific name is "llama glama"). They're really not a fight-y type of animal, and are pretty useless in combat. They just have a funny name.

-Guanacos are a small variety of the Llama Family, and the basis for the Llama breed, weighing around 200 lbs. They can spit at PL 2 like Llamas, but are only PL 1 otherwise. Alpacas are a similar, domesticated animal, related to the Vicuna.
