Prejudice (Horrible Scarring)- With a giant Mark of Kali on his face, Shroud kinda stands out.
Relationship (Julia Carpenter)- The two grew close during the Civil War era.

Total: Abilities: 74 / Skills: 48--24 / Advantages: 20 / Powers: 36 / Defenses: 18 (172)

The Ultimate Red Guardian Character:
-If you were to poll every Marvel fan on their "Red Guardian Characters", I would bet that the name that would come up the most would be The Shroud's. This is likely because he's had guest shot upon guest shot for decades, yet has never had a real, solid "push", so fans see a ton of potential that was just simply never realized, vs. characters who get re-pushed constantly, or more obscure characters.

-The Shroud was created by Steve Englehart to be a deliberate "mashup" of Batman and The Shadow, both dark, urban vigilantes cloaked in the shadows- this guy was even MORE involved with the dark! His Batman-ish origin is that he saw his parents gunned down before his eyes when he was ten years old- this drove him to vigilantism, which he trained for by going East, as both Batman & The Shadow had. He trained with the "Cult of Kali" in India, and obsessively studied the martial arts for seven years, graduating with the "Kiss of Kali", a red-hot iron that marked his face. His eyesight was lost, replaced with mystical extrasensory perception. Returning to the States, he became "The Shroud".

-Points for aiming big, though, because instead of focusing on drug dealers and street thugs, he went right to DOCTOR DOOM, planning on executing him for crimes against humanity. This was in Super-Villain Team-Up, which then focused on Doom & Namor the Sub-Mariner- the latter listened to the Shroud's origin story. He joined Prince Rudolfo's revolution against Doom, and "came close to revenge" according to the bio, but eventually teamed up with Doom & Captain America against a greater evil- the Red Skull. The Skull was left trapped on the Moon, but the Shroud was driven insane by his time in space, needing time to recover. So... it seems pretty clear that Englehart used his weird SVTU book as a "Hidden Pilot Episode" for his new, weird character- the Shroud, now sporting Darkforce powers, would team up with Jessica Drew & Dr. Strange before becoming an ally of the West Coast Avengers, and wouldn't you guess who was writing all of these adventures?

Later Shroud Appearances:
-The Shroud eventually started a thing where he pretended to be a criminal, in order to get closer to organized crime and destroy it from within. He created the group of horror/occult-themed villains The Night Shift, teaming with them & Cap against the Power Broker. He fought the Zodiac Cartel with the West Coasters and did some other stuff, but then Englehart had a falling-out of sorts with Marvel and of course his Pet Character disappeared. This is probably the source of the "Red Guardian Fandom" for the character, as people liked this guy's kind of darker, grittier take on vigilantism, plus he had a cool look and was something different for Marvel. Englehart, when not fapping over his precious Mantis, was usually pretty good at putting characters out there and making people like them.

-The character was a minor dude, missing out on the 1990s pretty much entirely (ironic, since he'd have probably been a better fit there than many heroes Marvel riveted onto grim '90s trends)- we saw stuff like that from Slapstick, Darkhawk, The Secret Defenders, The Darkhold Redeemers and all SORTS of minor-league characters. It wasn't until Civil War that he turned up again- he sided with the Unregistered heroes and fought Iron Man, and started a romantic relationship with Julia "Arachne/Spider-Woman" Carpenter, herself getting a mini-push at the time. The two are captured, but escape jail and eventually join the rest of the heroes. In the Shadowland story, he reappears with Silver Sable, Misty Knight and Paladin- a band of mercenaries- when Daredevil goes nuts and takes control of The Hand.

-He's also in Mark Waid's Daredevil, where he takes a dark turn- despondent over Julia leaving him and disappearing (she's the current Madame Web at this point), he fights DD, seemingly over turf, as DD has moved to San Francisco, where the Shroud keeps his "mob boss" thing. However, when they agree to team up to face The Owl, DD realizes that Shroud is behaving erratically and taking increasingly-huge risks (made more clear by his "stubble & B.O." slovenly manner), agreeing to run off with the Owl when the villain claims he can help find Julia, then torturing him, but causing fight after fight when DD tries to save him, Matt realizes he's trying to commit "Suicide by Supervillain". The Owl is restrained, but DD beats down the Shroud and insults him for taking this road, pointing out that he has a laundry list of great tragedies and rock bottoms that match anyone's and hasn't done the same thing. He does offer to help him find Julia, however.

The Shroud's Powers:
-Shroud is basically a martial artist who can also cast a field of Darkforce over things, making him pretty tricky (especially given the reach of his powers). He doesn't do any of the fancy stuff OTHER Darkforcers do, though- Teleporting, Snares, Cold, Blasts, etc. are all beyond him (even in the Daredevil fight, it LOOKS like he's doing some of the stuff, but it's mostly just swirling blackness as a misdirect for his melee fighting). He can make it so Precise that he can obscure Captain America's eyes from Dansen Macabre's "Slutty Dance of Death", or just blanket a stadium or a mansion with the stuff if he really pushes. He's fairly pricey given that he's an intelligent, solo investigator type who also kicks lots of ass and has some super-powers, but he's a good PL 9 Melee Fighter in any case. Good enough for a challenge, but a heavy-hitter like Daredevil can take him out.

Ahhh, Darkforce. Such a wonderful idea—-liquid darkness, tethered and drawn up from some sort of unknowable abyss. Cool stuff!

When he first appeared, he was cool, being a different type of character. Also mysterious.

I always thought Shroud and Moon Knight contrasted well with costumes and had similar power sets (when MK was not so empowered by his god Khonhu).

Complications:
Motivation (Power)- Dagny wishes to have the ultimate power of the "Corona Process".

Total: Abilities: 36 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 88 / Defenses: 13 (147)

-Dagny & Cedric Forrester were a pair of scientist siblings who developed a system to give people super-powers. Wealthy and arrogant, Dagny gladly volunteers, but her brother chickens out halfway through the dangerous experiment, leaving her with less than the full power she wanted. The chemicals from their experiment give the people of SoHo (including Peter Parker & Mary-Jane) a unique sickness, and Cedric tries to create an antidote- Dagny wants it in order to gain full power, but accidentally destroys it, shrivelling into an "old hag" as a result.

-Cedric & Harry Osborn eventually recreate the formula a couple years later as Spidey saves Corona from committing suicide- Cedric gets a court order to retain custody of his sister, getting away scot-free to use his sister as a laboratory guinea pig. He wants to use her as a minion, but a common crook takes over the operation, at which point Spider-Man gets involved AGAIN, trouncing Cedric & the crook, and letting Corona go to find her destiny. Despite her pedigree (created by a very, VERY young Kurt Busiek), she's never reappeared, save for a single background panel at the auction for Eddie Brock's "Venom" symbiote in Marvel Knights: Spider-Man. I'd imagine the name alone would make her rather relevant these days.

-A standard Flying Blaster, Corona also has a Transmutation Effect (not sure exactly how it works), and an Energy Aura that'll stop bullets & webbing- Spider-Man is thus pretty much S.O.L. against her, and usually has to use her head.

Yeah, but she doesn't have to do it on name alone...

My Amazing Woman: a super-hero romantic comedy podcast.

When the most powerful super hero on Earth marries an ordinary man, hilarity ensues.

Oops- haha. I missed that on the bio, but she's clearly flying in many pics. It doesn't say, but I'll guess Flight 6- the old standby for "can outrun Spider-Man".

Motivation (Power)- The Dark Rider desires power for himself, absorbing it from others.

Total: Abilities: 82 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 218 / Defenses: 13 (328)

-Debuting in a two-part Marvel Team-Up story, The Dark Rider is the former "Master of Time", a great wizard who once "entrapped time itself" in his citadel. He was attacked by lowly humans, who cast him out and slew his fellow wizards. Eventually, he gained power over Cotton Mather, the agent in the Salem Witch Trials, and forced him to be his minion. Mather abducted the Scarlet Witch in modern times, then brought her to the 17th Century to stand trial, and was followed by Spider-Man & The Vision (Wanda's husband), and eventually Doctor Doom (attracted by the Rider's power). However, the Rider started absorbing magical power from both Wanda AND Doom, growing in power (and intelligence- absorbing Doom's knowledge, too) and transforming animals into giant versions to fight the heroes (who mercilessly killed the creatures).

-Eventually, the Dark Rider grew so powerful that he captured Doom himself, and Wanda cast a spell transporting Moondragon to assist them. He started absorbing her powers as well, but the heroes freed Doom- Doom used his own remaining magic to cause the Rider to scream in pain, and the heroes attacked, finally defeating him. Finally, he burnt to a cinder. Mather tried to tell others about the Rider, but nobody believed him, and everyone returned to their proper time. Weird, weird story.

-The Dark Rider is MASSIVELY powerful- a being able to simultaneously fight off Spider-Man, Vision, Scarlet Witch & Doctor Doom, then absorb and drain their powers, leaving them almost helpless. He nearly does the same thing to Moondragon until Doom does some "Magic Thing" (no idea what; the Rider was draining him!) until he was beaten. He also has a powerful Summon, the ability to drain & absorb knowledge, travel through time, and more. So he's PL 9 at first, but will quickly gain more and more power, boosting his abilities with Variable, until he's damn near unstoppable.

Kulan Gath is, to me at least, the cooler ancient wizard. He conquered Earth with a single spell in a classic storyline, turning the planet and it’s heroes into their Hyborean equivalents.

-A bizarre story in the 1990s Fantastic Four series saw the Earth-944 Reed Richards doom his world in an alternate take on the Coming of Galactus story-arc. Here, the Watcher had sent REED, not Johnny, to Galactus's World-Ship, and in his search for the Ultimate Nullifier, Reed's curiosity got the better of him, and he spent too much time weighing the options of all the different weapons he could find. In so doing, his Earth was destroyed by Galactus, killing his team. Despondent and mad with grief, he of course became an interdimensional super-villain (wearing the old uniform of The Invincible Man- worn by a series of fake identities in the mainstream universe), slaughtering every version of himself he could find on every world, fearing they would destroy their worlds as he had his own. He managed to kill 3-4 alternate Reeds on-panel, before ending up on Earth-616.

-Here, he assaulted the FF, demanding they offer up their Reed- of course, at THIS point, Reed was thought to be dead, with Scott Lang taking over his role on the team! Despite that, there was a big battle, and he tried to use the Ultimate Nullifier- the Watcher (actually Aron the Rogue Watcher in disguise) "disintegrated" him and departed. The two turned up later, Aron getting this Reed to work on his Nullifier so that it could be used as a weapon on his behalf. He frequently mocked the villain, and ultimately had Sue brought to him in the Negative Zone. Here, he first pretended to be Reed-616, but Sue immediately saw through his deception. Instead, he tried to get her to be his lover, as they had both lost their loved ones- Sue again rejected him, and they started to fight. Reed managed to sneak attack her, but was caught in a sub-spatial current and thrown towards an "Annihilation Zone". Neither he nor Sue could help him, despite his pleas, and he apologized to her before he died.

-This Reed is effectively our Reed if he'd lost his team way back in the early days of the team, so he's less-skilled and dumber, but more merciless. And he also has an extremely powerful Powersuit, able to hurt The Thing with his Blasts, short out Psilord's dimensionally-traveling suit, and absorb pretty much any attack without harm.

-Sorcerer is one of Stan Lee's weaker creations- a late Silver Age dude who studied Extrasensory Perception religiously, and soon began trying to increase his own mental powers. He sought advice from Hindu, Buddhist & African "Juju" Magicians (was there not an interview process? "What are you intentions with these powers?" "To kill super-he-- I mean, to do good works"), then figured he'd test his newfound might by killing Spider-Man. Because OF COURSE. Using a "Juju Doll" to weaken Spidey (the Comics Code Authority disallowed "Voodoo"), and a Psycho-Intensifier to project his mind into a Synthetic Man, The Sorcerer nearly succeeded in killing Spider-Man, but the buzzer from his doorstep sounded off at an inopportune moment, creating a feedback that fried Sorcerer's brain. The Synthetic Man walked off a pier and disappeared forever. Stan wrote some REALLY weird stories when left to his own devices sometimes.

-Apparently a very fit guy, despite being an ugly old dude, The Sorcerer had some vague Magic powers, but mostly utilized that most dreaded of Power-Sets: "The Bathroom Psychic". Using a device of his own creation, he could project his mind into things, and his own ESP allowed him to see people from afar, which allowed him to use his Perception-Range "Juju Doll" stuff to basically mess up Spider-Man from an unknown distance away.

haha, thanks! This was a tricky one to do! I kept adding and adding stuff because each new line in his bio contained a MASSIVE, expensive power, lol. Thankfully I got them all down.

Fun Fact: When you requested this guy, I didn't know if you meant the Dark Rider or the Dark RAIDER, so I built both! Of course, one was from a 1970s comic and the other from a 1990s one, so it was pretty obvious which one you wanted to see :).

-Stellaris is a forgotten character from DeFalco's Thor run- she seeks vengeance against the Celestials for judging her homeworld, and deeming it "unfit" (translation: they blew it up). She followed a Celestial messenger that had contacted Thor & Hercules, then fought both Gods. Defeated, she escapes by threatening the Earth with destruction, then attempts to destroy a new Celestial as its being born- this actually causes the opposite effect, as the energy is instead absorbed and completes the birthing process. DeFalco used her again in Thundestrike, as she attempts to kill Eric Masterson, but gives up and crashes on Earth for a while, then goes on a journey of discovery.

-As DeFalco later leaves Marvel Comics, she went un-used for a decade, before popping up in the background of an Annihilation comic as one of Gamora's "Graces"- an army of alien female characters who'd been flying around in Comic Book Limbo for a while (alongside Tana Nile, Cerise and others). Here, she did little but lose to Ronan the Accuser. As much as I love Annihilation for reheating Marvel's dormant "Cosmic Scene", the Graces was probably the least continuity-accurate part of it- most of the girls were little more than jobbers- completely meaningless faces in the crowd. Stellaris in particular was heavily jobbed out when she was supposed to be tough.

-Like a lot of Thor villains, she seemed quite powerful at first, but seems to have "settled", especially in more modern times, where Ronan handily beat her. Initially, she was said to have the "Power of the Silver Surfer" inside that armor of hers. Obviously, that's a lot of "Big Talk" and not necessarily TRUE, but she definitely fights hard enough to cause the God of Thunder trouble. Her suit is an odd case of "Variable", which allows her to make numerous changes and alterations, such as building up her size, Blasts, Sonics, and even the ability to create a Motorcycle or "Sky Cycle" beneath her!
