"Animal Physiology" Speed 2 (8 mph) [2]
"Desert Animals" Immunity 2 (Thirst, Heat) (Flaws: Limited to Half Effect) [1]

"Camel Spit" Dazzle Visuals 1 [2]

"Natural Size" Growth 2 (Str & Sta +2, +2 Mass, +1 Intimidation, -1 Dodge/Parry, -2 Stealth) -- (10 feet) (Feats: Innate) (Extras: Permanent +0) [5]

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Camels cannot speak to humans, nor use their hooves to easily manipulate objects.
Responsibility (Mating)- Males of the Camel family will engage rival males for mating rights, urinating all over everything and making gross noises, intent on posturing.

Total: Abilities: 2 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 0 / Powers: 13 / Defenses: 5 (28)

Era: Modern
Range: Deserts of Asia & Africa
Stereotypes: Ornery and spit-happy.
Colouring: Brown, tan
Size: Up to 8 feet long (990-1320 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Wild herds of 3-25 creatures, or mounted by sentients.
Diet: Grass & vegetation
Tactics: Flee using speed or attack all-out with powerful hooves.

-Camels are more common mounts in deserts than Horses, for obvious reasons. Their whole bodies are designed to survive in arid, desert conditions, as they can survive weeks without water, long periods without food, and are much more immune to the ravages of heat than most large mammals (who overheat quite quickly- there's a reason almost all large mammals wallow in mud and water). The secret is in their humps, which store body fat there instead of in the rest of the body- this prevents fat from insulating them too much, and allows to evaporate the fat, creating an internal water supply. Camels can lose 25% of their body weight to perspiration, as opposed to 10-14% for most living creatures before death by circulatory disruption occurs. They're big, ugly, nasty bastards, though- willing to spit, kick and bite at anyone who bothers them, despite the fact that most of the species have been tamed for centuries.

-Dromedary Camels are exclusively domesticated (though feral herds exist), while Bactrian Camels are a rarity in the wild. Both can breed freely and produce fertile hybrids, so they're very close to each other, genetically speaking. In areas where their ranges overlap (such as Iran & Afghanistan), such hybrids are naturally occurring.

-Dromedary males can hit 1,320 lbs., and Bactrians are even larger, over 2,000 lbs.! Bactrians are critically-endangered in the wild, but like the Dromedaries, are frequently-domesticated. Neither species is TERRIBLY bad-ass, but large enough to fend off Wolves, so long as they're healthy.

Cervidae

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

CERVIDAE FAMILY (Order- Artiodactyla)
-Deer are a famous, but relatively common animal, and thus are viewed as a lot less cool these days than they were back in olden times, when it was likely the wildest animal that the common peasant (or even noble) would see in their lifetime, as "menageries" (zoos before zoos were a thing) were pretty rare. They're similar to the Antelopes, but notably have solid antlers that are shed & regrown each year, and exist largely in the Northern Hemisphere, living all over Europe, Asia and North America. Most of them are quite large- though things like the Pudu and Chevrotain are tiny animals smaller than most dogs (20-40 lbs. in weight). The regular Deer are fairly big, but often no bigger than really large humans, but once you get to the Caribou, Elk and Moose, forget about it.

-The famous antlers regrow each year, as I said, and are meant for combat between males, which is why only males have them (except for the Caribou/Reindeer, where the females do as well). Males generally beat the crap out of each other, with the strongest gaining the attentions of a female. The animal kingdom is relatively unforgiving in this manner- being a good-natured nerd is NOT the kind of thing that is well-rewarded in nature, and your woman would leave you the second a bigger, stronger male showed up and knocked you on your keister. If the human world were like that, UFC Champions would be the only guys around getting any action.

-Note: Deer vary greatly in size even in their own species, often by nearly double. Males are also MUCH larger than females, as is true in most species in which males compete for mates. This means that Power Levels can vary quite a bit, with smaller specimens being a full PL or two lower, and does nearly always being lower-level than bucks (especially as most never grow antlers). And as deer are typically quite common and rarely the most powerful species in their ecosystems, this creates kind of a "log-jam" of PLs, taking up PL 2-4 positions across all sizes of the animals, up until you hit the truly large specimens.

Danger to Humans: Immense. Actually, Deer are responsible for more human fatalities than any other animal in North America! Sounds crazy, until you realize just WHY- the sheer numbers of Deer mean that they are all over the place, including roads. And since they suck at getting out of the way of vehicles, they're often hit- and their long legs mean that they often end up going straight through the windshield. Deer collisions actually kill around TWO-HUNDRED PEOPLE a year, far outstripping even dog attacks. This makes deer almost twice as deadly as bees, as well.

Back in grade scool we were living in a pretty rural area. We also didnt have a whole lot of available money at the time. Going to the local zoo was a good way to do stuff as a family. We were there so often that we got to know the guides and they were looking at putting together some sort of youth program.

One of the coolest demonstations was on camel feet. They had a pail of sand. It was easy to push a pen into it. That would be like a narrow horse hoof. Then they would put a coin under the pen making it more difficult.. being a camel foot.

Great way to show distribution of mass to a younging.
We rise from the ashes so that new legends can be born.

-There are actually a handful of Deer species that are incredibly tiny- smaller than most dogs and some cats. The smallest, the Javan Mouse-Deer, is only the size of a rabbit! Their specialty is stealth, as you might imagine- the heaviest of them weighs 18 lbs. All of them hail from Southeast Asia.

-I actually had to double-check my Rabbit build for this one- these are PL 0 animals in combat, but PL 1 defensively owing to their speed.

CHEVROTAINS: There are a few kinds of these basal ungulates- Spotted (Indian & Sri Lankan) & Yellow-Striped.

-Incredibly wimpy, they are best served by running away, as there's little a 20-lb. animal can do against a larger target. Being small and easy prey, they live in dense forested regions.

Tiny Deer:
WATER DEER: Bizarre Asian Deer with fangs, like the Musk Deer. Named for his proximity to rivers & swamps, but colloquially called the "Vampire Deer" in English- small populations are located in Europe from escaped & released stock. With 2-3 young common at a time, and even SEVEN having been seen, they are the most prolific of all deer. Typically 20-30 lbs.
MUNTJAC: Asian deer. They're an invasive species in Japan & England, where a captive population escaped in 1925 and have boomed, and may become England's most-common deer. They have antlers, but also small tusks, similar to Water Deer. About 20-40 lbs.

Image

PUDU: Small, chestnut-colored South American deer- the smallest species in the world. Typically only 15-30 lbs., the smallest subspecies are only 7-13 lbs.!

Image

GRAY BROCKET: South American deer. 25-50 lbs.
PYGMY BROCKET: South American deer, living in smaller pockets than the Gray. 20-40 lbs.
DWARF BROCKET: Also called the Chunyi- about 25 lbs. From western South America.
WATER CHEVROTAIN: Related to the other Chevrotains, but larger.

This is also about the size that I'd give to the 'tiny reindeer' who pull Santa Claus' 'miniature sleigh'. When he's referred to as 'a right jolly old elf', the poem doesn't mean a lordly figure out of Tolkien.

-Musk Deer represent the smaller species, maxing out around 40 pounds. They are most notable for sporting honest-to-god FANGS. Okay, they're called "tusks", but they're curved, backwards-pointing teeth from the upper jaw, typically used in territorial disputes among males. Musk Deer hang around Asian countries and mostly eat lichen. Some Lynx hunt nothing but Musk Deer, but their greatest threat is man, who hunts them for their musk as a base for perfumes.

-At PL 2, they'd be pretty easy prey for predators if not for their speed and relative stealth, and the fact that they are nervous, skittish animals who hang around dense forests, like most small deer do.

-This build represents animals like the Musk Deer- slightly larger than the tiniest breeds, but still weighing less than the average man.

Small Deer:
RED BROCKET: A South & Central American type of brocket deer- the largest of the brockets, weighing about 40-100 lbs. Their antlers are more like tiny spikes.
TUFTED DEER: Named for the large tufts of fur on their heads. They have fangs like Musk Deer, for the same territory-defense reasons. Typically found in pairs, they usually weigh about 37-66 lbs.
PAMPAS DEER: Brazilian deer species that congregates in small groups, and is somewhat threatened. Typically 50-75 lbs., with longer antlers than most deer of this size.

-This build represents deer species smaller than the Mule Deer- most of these are about as big as the average man. A great many come from the Philippines and Indonesia- island habitats favoring smaller animals. Only the Roe Deer is particularly common- the Visayan Spotted Deer is the world's rarest.

Medium-Sized Deer:
ROE DEER: A European deer that was the source animal for Bambi, though the Disney version was changed to a much larger Mule Deer, common in North America. In England, they have exploded in population, as deer species tend to in city biomes. The Asian subspecies (the Siberian Roe Deer) is typically hunted by tigers, leopards and other animals in the region. About 130 lbs.
TARUCA: Deer from the Andes mountains, typically in grasslands close to water. About 150-175 lbs.

Image

BAWEAN DEER: Critically-endangered Indonesian deer with three-tined antlers- victimized by habitat loss, dholes, and leopards. About 143 lbs.
PHILIPPINE DEER: Vulnerable deer from a few Filipino islands. It's related to the much larger Sambar Deer of continental Asia. Typically found in scattered populations, as they have a very specific type of habitat. About 80-132 lbs.

Image

VISAYAN SPOTTED DEER: A stocky, spotted deer from the Philippines. Horribly-rare, they are possibly doomed- less than 300 remain in the wild, and they're getting harder and harder to find. 55-175 lbs.
CALAMANIAN DEER: A very endangered species known only from a single island chain in the Philippines. Sometimes called a "Hog Deer" for its habit of dashing through undergrowth with its head down, like a hog, instead of leaping over obstacles like most deer. Primarily solitary, they weigh about 80-100 lbs.
SOUTH ANDEAN DEER: An endangered deer from the southernmost tip of South America. Weigh around 200 lbs.

-Deer were much more iconic back in the day, where they showed up all over Heraldry and in European mythology (White Stags represented Jesus and the unspoiled wilderness), but these days, people care a lot less. Maybe because now we've got National Geographic and Animal Planet, and we can see lots of the REALLY cool animals out there, something like this just doesn't seem so special- they're pretty much THE prey animal for the Wolves & Bears of the world in fiction and reality, so you don't see them as protagonists or major animals in any body of work other than Bambi. They just come off as a little "plain".

-The Mule Deer, at least, is the basis for the Disney version of Bambi, replacing the European Roe Deer in the original. Taking up the vast western part of North America, they are extremely common. Adult bucks are about 130-330 lbs., varying depending on diet. A trophy specimen can weigh up to 460 lbs.!

-Deer Stags are powerful, dangerous creatures, but much less so than many other animal species, especially the predators that hunt them. Like most animals, they're heavily vulnerable to ranged attacks, which is why they're comparatively easy prey for hunters and their guns (unless they detect the hunter, at which point they just tear off). They're PL 4 when faced by super-heroes or D&D characters or the like, but normal varieties are merely PL 1-2: enough to be dangerous to humans (check YouTube for clips of deer turning the tables on the men hunting them), but not overly so. This build represents one of the larger varieties, though easily handles the Red Deer, White-tailed Deer (ie. Bambi's subspecies), and Fallow Deer, among others. Basically, if you need a medium-sized "regular" Cervid, use this build.

-The large-sized deer, about as big as the Mule Deer, which is about PL 4.

Large Deer:
FALLOW DEER: Good-sized spotted deer from Europe, with very impressive, moose-like antlers. Very common and popular, they have been introduced in many regions, and have become feral or livestock populations in the Americas & Australia. 130-220 lbs. in males, but some can grow even larger.

-The names of Cervids in North America and Europe are all kinds of messed up. Quick primer: What Europeans call Elk, North Americans call Moose (because early explorers to the latter mistook another animal for Elk, requiring a new name for the actual animal). What we ended up calling Elk are also known as Wapiti. And Europe's Reindeer are called Caribou over here, unless they're Santa's Reindeer, who curiously keep the same name (flying animals are common mounts in almost all religions, but these managed to stick and are now by far the most famous). They are the only domesticated deer species, used mostly for draught work.

-Reindeer are common on all the Arctic regions, circling the globe, but various populations are endangered and the species overall is classified as "Vulnerable". Many Arctic cultures have based their entire culture around following the Reindeer herds, and it's one of the few cervids with both males and females growing antlers, which are the largest compared to body mass of any living deer species. Males shed theirs after the rut, and females after they calve later on- females outrank males during the time when only they have antlers.

-The Reindeer are the same PL as common Deer, and only a notch more expensive, but are more focused towards Strength and Toughness. The Elk/Wapiti use similar stats, being only a hundred pounds smaller. The same stats also go to the huge Asian deer, the Sambar. Elk differ from Caribou with their pointier antlers, and they're generally a little less furry.
