Addiction (Mutants)- Krakoa now feeds upon the energies of mutants, requiring more to sate his thirst.

Total: Abilities: 10 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 0 / Powers: 246 / Defenses: 31 (296)

-Krakoa's pretty famous for a monster that only showed up like twice for decades. But that'll happen when you're the super-villain monster at the end of the story that kicked off the most popular team in comics (at least until The Avengers made a billion-plus at the box office)... but the main "daddy" of the team didn't create you and obviously didn't feel like going back to that well for additional stories. Krakoa is of course a giant mutant monster that came about when atomic testing converted an actual island to a life-sustaining beast from hell, and he went as far as to kidnap the original X-Men, then brainwash Cyclops & Professor X into sending MORE mutants to him, setting off the Giant-Size team.

-Krakoa was defeated only thanks to a massive effort involving everyone using their powers to maximum effectiveness, and was blown into the atmosphere. Only a few more in-continuity appearances (a collected monster in Quasar, one time) were there for him, but he shows up a LOT in "what ifs", and story-retconning has him killing entire swaths of other mutants in the meantime (such as Vulcan's team).

-Various "Spawn" of Krakoa, formed in that Quasar story actually, showed up over the years but were mostly quickly defeated by teams like the Young X-Men. A spore calling himself "Vega Superior" creates a band of X-Men lookalikes out of natural materials and fights Nightcrawler, but he easily defeats them all- Vega Superior chases him into the ocean, but discovers it cannot swim- it sinks to the ocean floor. In modern times, a new spawn showed up as sort of a Protector of Logan's "Jean Grey School", swimming around the grounds of the new school and engaging in whacky antics. Here, Krakoa is forced to fight the X-Men by the new Hellfire Club, but apologizes and begins protecting the school grounds, even forming diamonds from trees to allow the school to stay open. The Hellfire Club created many clones, but they were all killed fighting the X-Men.

-Finally, in the Hickman House of X run, Krakoa has returned to Earth, absorbing its spawns and forming an alliance with Professor X and the X-Men. He reveals his backstory- once an island called "Okkara", which was then split into Krakoa & Arakko- a yin & yang that created a portal to a Demonic dimension. Arrako was sealed away along with Apocalypse's "First Horsemen", leading to a sorrowful Krakoa becoming inert until awakening in the present, where history went as we understand it. Finally, in the Hickman run, Krakoa becomes the "Sovereign nation for mutants", taking them on while splintering himself across the world. This is... weird, but thankfully more of a "hidden history" than an "EVERYTHING YOU KNOW IS WRONG" situation (we really didn't know Krakoa's origins at all). The nation has undergone several attacks, and it seems things are building up.

-A PL 14 super-monster, Krakoa is Part Kaiju/Part Base, as he just sits there and lets minions and various traps on him do his dirty work, but he CAN come to life and start laying a whupping on the heroes if need be. He's virtually impossible to injure (Toughness +23!), and it'll take an entire team of... say, thirteen super-heroes to end his threat. Years later, we'd discover a retcon that said he was little more than an animal, and that his psionic powers were part of a lie created by Charles Xavier to hide the deaths of Vulcan's X-team. So this build basically represents the smarter, original version.

So yes, we've entered another stage of "Jab wants all his builds on the same forum". In this case, about 4-5 days of random Marvel characters from my index and backlog, some with a bunch of new information or writing. Many in this set start with "Y" or "Z" because those letters are ALMOST done in my index and it's bugging me, lol.

I got most of the major characters in the last two quick sets like this, but there's a handful of interesting names. And after this will finally be the Wonder Woman Builds! About three weeks' worth, I think. After that will be the Fantastic Four.

-A new-ish (well, TEN YEARS OLD, I guess) character I've never heard of, Jackie Dio is an enforcer of Silvermane that spent a decade in prison, and developed a hatred of super-humans. His brother (who had turned him in) had become the super-strong Mr. Pain, enforcer to The Owl, and Jackie himself was given super-powers against his will. He confronts and kills Mr. Pain, then becomes an assassin. He works for the Kingpin, infiltrating Hammerhead's gang, and murders the villain Slyde for refusing to ally with the latter crimelord. In his last appearance, he shot Hammerhead through the head, nearly killing him and requiring him to wear a cybernetic suit.

-Underworld has low-end Cap-like abilities, having been exposed to "the gaseous form of the Super-Soldier Serum", as well as healing. His main gimmick, however, belongs to his specialized Sunglasses & Guns, which of course fire ADAMANTIUM-TIPPED BULLETS, and are super-accurate and can "track" a target like guided missiles.

Love Krakoa build Jab!

?s re: Krakoa: 1) Did he originally battle Prof X mentally and the X-men Team physically? Or was that all changed to the island collapsing around them?
2) Is Krakoa part of another island mass that is separated from it?
3) Is Krakoa an Omega mutant? if not, what would make it Omega?

Merry Christmas to you, my Friend!

Wow, I'm not sure. I've really only read Krakoa's debut, then the Wolverine and the X-Men stuff with an offshoot of Krakoa.

I guess Krakoa used to be a whole being with Okkara, but they were split up. I don't know if he really counts as a "mutant" because his nature came from atomic testing at one point, though they've made retcons since then.

-The "Uncanny Valley" was a concept introduced by robotics professor Masahiro Mori in 1970, stating that a graph of sorts exists that defines what we find familiar and "cute" in things acting or looking human, and when that shifts over to being creepy and disturbing. From Wikipedia: Mori's original hypothesis states that as the appearance of a robot is made more human, some observers' emotional response to the robot will become increasingly positive and empathic, until a point is reached beyond which the response quickly becomes that of strong revulsion. However, as the robot's appearance continues to become less distinguishable from that of a being, the emotional response becomes positive once again and approaches human-to-human empathy levels. This area of repulsive response aroused by a robot with appearance and motion between a "barely human" and "fully human" entity is called the uncanny valley. The name captures the idea that an almost human-looking robot will seem overly "strange" to some human beings, will produce a feeling of uncanniness, and will thus fail to evoke the empathic response required for productive human-robot interaction- it explains why things like prostheses, zombies, corpses and those horrifying "nearly-human" robots are disturbing to some people, while cute fuzzy robots are not.

-I mention this because HOLY FREAKING CRAP LOOK AT THIS THING!!! Yith was introduced for a newfangled CGI-illustrated Spider-Man Limited Series in 2002, using some innovative stuff that hadn't been used in comics much before. The result? A disturbing Uncanny Valley effect, as this "nearly-human" scantily-clad snake lady with overly-large, dead eyes; plastic-like skin; and a mouth that was both unnatural and too visible from the inside; was introduced as a villain. Smarter CGI animators would later exaggerate things appropriately to avoid the Polar Express effect- characters like Merida, Anna & Elsa all avoid this in properly-animated CGI features.

-Yith was hired by Mr. Arliss, the head of "Monnano" (SUBTLE), a company that thrives on genetically-altered food, to kill Dr. Curt Connors after his wife & son contract cancer from the water run-off of one of his factories. However, Connors then turned into The Lizard, and Spider-Man got involved in the fight between the two. Further brawls commenced, but after Connors' wife died, Yith began to sympathize with him, led him to Arliss, and then murdered him when Spidey attempted to prevent The Lizard from doing so. This seems to be a bit of a solid morality-tale, one that involves Greg Rucka taking pot-shots at Monsanto & GMOs years before that was trendy, and numerous characters you can potentially sympathize with. As this CGI-Comic experiment seems to have failed, we never saw Yith in much of a context again- she appears in the background of a few random "Villainous Gatherings", but neither did nor said anything. Later, she was revealed to probably be a descendant of the serpent god, Set.

-Yith is a powerful assassin, able to brawl with both The Lizard & Spider-Man in her debut and not get overwhelmed. As both are quite tough, this puts her at LEAST at PL 9, owing to New Villain Stink. She's strong, fast, mobile and can take a bullet without dying.

Given the timing, I wonder if they were planning on using the art style of Spider-Man: The New Animated Series. Still, this seems like a step back...

-There were three "Predator X" monsters created by Weapon Plus to hunt down various X-people (the director, Stryker, feared the coming of a "Mutant Messiah", as predicted by Nimrod), but two were killed (one by a Sentinel O.N.E. trooper, one by X-23). The remaining one begins as a kind of Legacy Virus Incarnate, basically doing the disease's old job by killing off random Marauder-clones and background mutants that Marvel wasn't using anymore (poor Peepers, we hardly knew ye), but was killed by Wolverine. Soon, even more are created, and they've gone on to become kind of a generic Background Jobber Monster thing. One plane was shot down and a series of X-People including Cyclops, Wolverine, Magneto & Fantomex had to kill them off.

-The Predators are naturally quite strong, fast, regenerative, and never tire, making them extremely effective hunters... but of course even WITH New Villain Stink they were never really able to kill anyone good, and the heroes are now capable of mowing them down pretty quickly- they might even settle into PL 6s one of these days!

Krakoa's history sums up a lot of what went wrong with the X-books; needlessly convoluted, multiple ret-cons, and out-of-nowhere character swerves. I admit I liked the goofball concept of a Krakoa spore serving as the Wolverine-led academy's school grounds/lawn.

Poison...yeah, I actually read her first appearance. She seems like one of those character concepts Marvel had some plan for, but a lukewarm to bad reception pretty much killed any further execution for the anti-hero/villain. And yes, even way back when, I thought her power-set was just random-what does a toxic touch have to do with teleportation?

Underworld? Never heard of the character before, but if I ever had the chance to write for Marvel, I'd absolutely want to address how it is far, FAR too easy to get "super-serum" enhancements and adamantium/vibranium weapons. Both of those should be REALLY RARE, even in a four-color Marvel Universe. I'd make matters clear that most of the super-soldier variants are both less effective than the one given Steve Rogers (making it crucial that individuals augmented by these processes already be very fit and/or highly trained combatants), AND need to be periodically re-ingested, or the enhancements fade. And GENUINE adamantium would indeed be super rare, but steel alloys with even a small fraction of the metal are still incredibly tough, and far more common than the real deal.

All my best.

My fanwank for Poison is that her attack and her teleportation are two facets of the same ability, that she somehow manipulates the body (also explaining her superhuman physique) mentally and causes it to break down, either to attack someone, or 'breaks it down and puts it back together somewhere else' a la a Star Trek transporter.

And I think that's as close as we've ever gotten to a Cuban superhero? :/

Yeah, I feel like I've typed "Super-Soldier Serum" into 9 million origin stories by this point- it sort of replaced "Mutant Powers" as the default "lazy answer" to how someone got their powers.

I was really curious as to why Poison got this elaborate origin story yet completely vanished- you think a bad response caused it? I know Marvel sometimes "tested out" characters, particularly in Spidey's books.

-The Living Laser was initially just another putzy Journeyman Villain who floated around harassing the Avengers and joining various incarnations of The Lethal Legion, and never really evolved past that- he was sorta like Lightmaster, in that he was a Light-Themed Jobber who eventually got turned into an Energy Form. He debuts as an evil scientist who builds some wrist-mounted lasers (not bad for 1966) and develops an obsession with The Wasp, kidnapping her and nearly killing Hawkeye & Captain America until they called for help. He later tried to take over a small South American country, but was finally captured. This was the end of his run as a "Solo Villain" who could take on the entire team- guys like Kang & Ultron are among the only Avengers foes with THAT kind of cred. Instead, he joined a team formed by the Mandarin, then later teamed up with the first Batroc's Brigade (Batroc, Laser & Swordsman), fighting Cap again. Finally, he joins the first incarnation of the Lethal Legion, formed by the Grim Reaper to gain revenge on the Avengers. And thus his entire career is basically summed up- Journeyman Villain/Team Guy.

-Despite that, he occasionally springs out for something bigger, like gaining the powers of the Serpent Crown (he took over Nuklo, but the Avengers stop him). A second Lethal Legion is formed by Count Nefaria, but they job to the Avengers again. He nearly dies after reaching "critical mass" and exploding in space, but returns a few times as living energy, and largely-battling Iron Man, who by this point was definitely his "main" adversary. He spent most of the '90s & 2000s on the shelf, returning more-recently as a minion of the Mandarin once again, as well as joining the Hood's "Villain Army", Baron Zemo's "Army of Evil", and working for M.O.D.O.K. In short- he's now just total "Filler", appearing as a generic Blaster in group scenes.

-He could be PL 8 or 9, but I think his modern "Photonic Body" version deserves PL 9 status- without it, he's a much cheaper PL 8. The dude DOES fight Iron Man, after all, so he can't be a complete panty-waist. And he's actually a really good scientist back in the day, creating a hand-held laser in the SIXTIES... but after a point, he never created anything else- he's one of THOSE guys.

Re: Jab’s Builds! (Hyo Iwamono! Krakoa! The Living Laser!)

I always wondered where his horns came from in his energy state. I guess a helmet?

LL was powerful in the 1970's when he blasted a just-revived Wonder Man, stunning him. In that story, LL behind the scenes also used his light energy to mesmerize the Whizzer into thinking the Avengers were Ibisia, Future Man and Madame Death and attack them.

When Count Nefaria analyzed and enhanced his powers, I wonder if this is what led Living Laser to really turn into laser light energy?
