Total: Abilities: -4 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 10 / Defenses: 4 (23)

Era: Modern
Range: Savannah of Africa
Stereotypes: Exciteable & nervous.
Colouring: Brown & white
Size: Up to 5 feet long (88-145 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Wild herds of 3-200 creatures.
Diet: Grass & vegetation
Tactics: Flee using speed or attack all-out with powerful antlers.

-Impala are extremely fast, and usually paired up against Cheetah (one of the only predators that can outrun them- Impala still usually get away due to Endurance, though). Long and slender, they have horned males and hornless females, and take great leaps, up to 33 feet across. They hop and leap very erratically when fleeing, though to be a defense measure to confuse predators- they are a major prey species for Leopards, Cheetahs & Lions.

-They're very weak on their own, and pretty bad at fighting, so they're no dominant animal- anything can beat them up. At only 145 lbs. or so, Impala are easy prey for most big cats if caught, and so they're very low-level- only PL 1 on offense, PL 2 on defense.

-There are about eleven Antelopes fitting of this size- about 30-80 lbs apiece. Too small to be much of a threat to a person, but big enough that their horns can't simply be ignored. They almost all look the same, judging by pictures.

Small Antelopes:
FOUR-HORNED ANTELOPE: Found in India & Nepal, where it's called the Chousingha. One of the only bovids in the world with four horns.

Image

CHINKARA: Also called the Indian Gazelle, they can go without water for a long time, gaining liquids from plants and morning dew. Thick, curving horns. About 51 lbs.

Image

GREY RHEBOK: South African Gazelle. 45-66 lbs.
GOITERED GAZELLE: Iranian Gazelle. Males develop goiter-like throat-growths during the mating season, which is generally non-violent. 40-80 lbs.
MONGOLIAN GAZELLE: Groups of 30-40. About 66 lbs.

Image

PRZEWALKSI'S GAZELLE: Endangered and found only in China- 350-400 remain. 31-70 lbs.
RED-FRONTED GAZELLE: Occupy a single strip across the middle of Africa. Averaging 65 lbs.
MOUNTAIN REEDBUCK: Three tiny patches of this Endangered animal throughout Africa. About 66 lbs.
SPEKE'S GAZELLE: Endangered- known only in the Horn of Africa. The smallest Gazelle species- 30-70 lbs.

Image

MOUNTAIN GAZELLE: Found throughout the Middle East in patches- Endangered but can live well in deserts. One of the only mammals where both sexes have horns. About 30-70 lbs.
ERLANGER'S GAZELLE: Dark African Gazelle- may be a subpsecies of the Mountain Gazelle. 30-70 lbs.
HEUGLIN'S GAZELLE: Little-known reddish Gazelles from Ethiopia. 33-77 lbs.

Image

DUIKERS: There are many kinds of Duikers- short, stubby Antelopes with tiny horns. Common & Bay Duikers are about this large.

-One of the most famous and best-known Gazelles, recognizable by their thicker, dark horns. Shakira's character "Gazelle" in Zootopia was a Thomson's Gazelle. Females can have horns as well, but they are often much smaller. About 40-80 lbs.

-Thomson's Gazelles are almost identical to the "Average-Sized" Antelopes, but are in fact the world's fourth-fastest land animal, after only the Cheetah, Pronghorn & Springbok. They can run at 50-60 mph, and even outrun Cheetahs over extended stretches! Their distinct "pronking" leaps and zigzag running patterns also serve to startle and throw off predators.

-A slight upgrade to the Small Antelopes, there are about eight of these, being 50-100 lbs. They upgrade the previous build just a tiny bit, being moderately tougher and more definitively PL 2.

Average-Sized Antelopes:
Image

SPRINGBOK: Southern African species known for leaping about 6 feet into the air. Most look pretty generic, but ranchers have bred blacker and whiter varities. It is considered the national animal of South Africa since white rule, and this was kept by Nelson Mandela following his Presidency in a matter of reconciliation. 60-95 lbs.

Image
Image

BLACKBUCK: Blackbucks have the most AMAZING, spiral horns of the Antelope family. They're sacred and highly protected in India, and are sometimes called the Indian Gazelle, and herds have been introduced in Argentina and Texas numbering in the thousands. They're about 40-130 lbs.
GERENUK: Very tall, lanky Antelopes famous for standing on their hind legs to reach higher branches. Also called "Giraffe Gazelles". 62-115 lbs.
CUVIER'S GAZELLE: North African Gazelle- only 2000 remain. About 77 lbs.
HARNESSED BUSHBUCK: Central African Antelope, a bit more colorful than the others, with dark brown fur and white bellies. About 94 lbs.

Image

TIBETAN ANTELOPE: Probably more closely related to the "Goat-Antelopes" in Caprinae. Known for their very long horns. 57-86 lbs.
SOEMMERING'S GAZELLE: Tall, lanky Gazelles that look pretty "generic" and are often mistaken for other species. Typically 66-100 lbs.
DIBATAG: Tall, slender Antelopes from East Africa. About 44-77 lbs.

-These Antelopes are another size upgrade, but pretty much just the Impala. Typically they're about 150-180 lbs.

Big Antelope:
SAIGA: Saiga Antelope are very well known to animal fans for being literally the only thing in the world that looks anything LIKE this. Their distinctive noses are designed to allow them to heat up cold air, cool down hot air, and filter out sand more easily, and are an adaptation that was way more common in ancient times. They hail from Russia & East Asia, and were very nearly exterminated in the 1920s, bouncing back but then being hunted again following the end of the USSR and Chinese love for its horns in medicine- they remain Critically Endangered today, falling to 50,000 animals from millions in the 1950s. About 60-150 lbs.
EAST AFRICAN ORYX: Closely related to the Gemsbok, about 5-30 in a herd. About 175 lbs.

Image

ARABIAN ORYX: A long-horned Oryx, with a distinctive shoulder hump. The myth of the unicorn may have resulted from one-horned Oryxes- the King James version of the Bible translates its old name "re'em" as "unicorn". About 150 lbs.

Image

PUKU: Most are located in Tanzania, and they have lyre-shaped horns. About 150-200 lbs.
KOB: Central African antelope resembling a more heavily-built Impala, with herds numbering in the thousands. 100-210 lbs.

Image

DAMA GAZELLE: These white-faced antelopes look almost exactly like Goats, to me- almost identical faces with short, curved horns. The national symbol of Niger, and are Critically Endangered. 70-165 lbs.

GRANT'S GAZELLE: Long-horned Gazelles closely related to Soemmerring's & Thomson's Gazelles, but bigger. They are highly prized by Cheetahs and Jackals as prey. About 80-180 lbs.

Image

BUSHBUCK: Also called the Cape Bushback & Imbalaba. From South Africa. About 100-180 lbs.

Image

SOUTHERN REEDBUCK: Short, sharply-pointed horns. From South Africa, they typically live in pairs or alone. About 100-150 lbs.
BOHOR REEDBUCK: Central African antelopes with reddish-tan fur. About 100-150 lbs.

Image

SITATUNGA: Furry, brown antelopes from Central Africa. Varies highly in size, being from 50-270 lbs, with males being exceptionally larger.

Image

DUIKERS: There are many kinds of Duikers- primitive, stubby Antelopes with tiny horns. The largest of the Duikers are the Yellow-Backed, Jetink's and Abbott's Duikers, each being about 120-150 lbs. Jetink's Duikers are the rarest, with about 2,000-3,500 remaining in the wild.

-Another size upgrade sees the first group of Antelopes that average to being larger than people. Most of these are from 100-300 lbs. Females and smaller specimens will likely be a PL lower.

Large Antelope:
NYALA: Very large, brown antelope with tiny, vertical white stripes that look almost inked on. About 120-310 lbs.
LESSER KUDU: Looks very similar to its relative, the Nyala, with big spiral horns that have made it the symbol of the St. Louis Zoo. Hails from the Horn of Africa, with only about 118,000 left. About 130-240 lbs.

Image

TOPI: A subspecies of the Tsessebe. Highly unusually, FEMALES compete for MALES- they only go into estrous once per year, and so they try to make the best of it by competing for the most dominant males. About 150-350 lbs.

Image

HIROLA: Nearly-extinct antelopes- only 300-500 are left in the wild, and none are in zoos. Despite this, they are little-protected. Their loss would be the first extinction of a large African mammal in modern human history. Also called "Hunter's Hartebeest". About 160-260 lbs.

Image

RED HARTEBEEST: Large red, spiral-horned antelopes. About 280-330 lbs.
LICHTENSTEIN'S HARTEBEEST: Brown antelopes with simple horns. About 330 lbs.
LECHWE: Central African antelope. About 130-260 lbs.

BONTEBOK: Dark antelopes with white face patches. About 110-340 lbs.

-Critically-Endangered white antelope with long spiral horns. Their extremely slow speeds makes them easy prey for hunters, vehicles, and predators- this hurts their changes of recovery. About 130-280 lbs, which makes them like the Large Antelope, but slower.

-Hah, Wildebeest are such jobbers. You've seen Animal Planet? Then you've probably seen a Lion kick this thing's ass. Or a Crocodile. Or a Leopard. Hell, they're just THAT common and THAT easy for most predators to kill. They're so lame that their only two pop culture moments I can think of are the GNU internet thingie, and that crappy Teen Titans arc with the "Wildebeest Society". Well, they're not SO useless. At 600 lbs., they'd kick YOUR ass, and I've seen a Cheetah get crippled by one (she was saved by park wardens after having her jaw broken), but to a major, large predator? Not even close.

-There are two varieties, the Black & Blue, and both are broad-headed, ugly creatures with humps- it's thought that the Wildebeest is the origin for the mythical Catoblepas, which had hanging heads and long necks. There are about 1.5 million of the Blue variety, which is the most well-known and iconic, and 7,000+ of the Black- both are rated as "Least Concern". They are also called the "Gnu", though haven't been regularly described as such in years. That name derives from the Hottentot's understanding of the male's mating call. Wildebeest are one of the rare herbivorous "Keystone Species"- said to reflect the overall health of an ecosystem- since they are preyed upon by so many things, they are extremely necessary throughout their habitats.

-The elite version of a Wildebeest is only PL 4, since most of what they do is run, but they're not a huge pushover- that's still equal to your average armed Minion, as well as most of the Deer Family. Especially because their herds are GIGANTIC, and traverse the African Savannah, resulting in a massive Trample (stats up as: Damage 10- Area- 120ft. Burst +3) effect. Blue Wildebeest are 260-600 lbs., while Black are about 200-400 lbs.

Size: Up to 5 feet long (280-460 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Wild herds of 3-30 creatures.
Diet: Grass & vegetation
Tactics: Flee using speed or attack all-out with powerful antlers.

-Oryx are probably the coolest-looking of the mid-sized Antelopes, being 460-lb. heavy-duty Antelopes designed (like many of this size) for desert conditions. Their long, spiraled horns are one of many possible origins for the Unicorn myth. Naturally, these amazing horns are the reason why the animal was damn near hunted to exinction- there are currently none in the wild. Other breeds of Oryx are still out there, but similarly-rare.

-Desert specialists, Oryx can survive temperatures that would kill most mammals, and are specially-adapted in other ways (absorbing water from their diet, and having super-efficient kidneys). They're solid PL 4 animals.

That'd be about the PRONGHORN antelope, I believe. Which is actually classified with the Giraffe-like animals.

-The biggest grouping of the Antelopes (though there are two larger animals- MUCH larger, in fact) go here- these make up some true giants. At least 220-700 lbs.

Huge Antelopes:
GEMSBOK: Fairly iconic, gray-hued Antelope from South Africa, known for their extremely long horns, even shared by females. About 220-460 lbs.

Image

MOUNTAIN NYALA: Large, Endangered brown Antelopes from Ethiopia, sporting some poorly-defined white stripes and spots. About 330-660 lbs.

Image

GIANT SABLE ANTELOPE: Critically-Endangered owing to their spectacular curved horns. The national symbol of Angola. About 400-525 lbs.
SABLE ANTELOPE: Large, dark Antelopes with a few subspecies. About 490-520 lbs.
ROAN ANTELOPE: Fairly common Antelope scattered over Africa. Shorter curved horns. About 500-700 lbs.

Image

BLUEBUCK: A sadly extinct large Antelope that lived in South Africa until around 1800. Smaller than the closely-related Roan & Sable Antelopes. It was rare even by the time Europeans encountered it, owing to a loss of grassland habitat. Only four mounted skins remain. About 300-400 lbs.

Image

WATERBUCK: Large, common brown antelope, named for its reliance on water- they dehydrate easily, and often flee to water to avoid predators. About 350-580 lbs.

Image

GREATER KUDU: Huge antelopes from all over Africa, being quite common. Brown with light striping. About 260-700 lbs, with great disparity between males and females.

Image

HARTEBEEST: Reddish-tan/brown antelopes that are highly-visible and easy to hunt. About 220-440 lbs.

Image

NILGAI: Also called the "Blue Bull", this Indian Antelope has blue/grey males and tan females. Introduced in Texas in the 1920s, there are now 37,000 feral Nilgai there. About 220-635 lbs.

-The enormous Bongo is the second-largest Antelope, with extremely striking reddish-brown, white-striped coats and spiral horns. They are actually pretty common despite a fairly small range, but an Eastern subspecies has only 140 animals left, making it the most endangered large mammal in Africa. Both males and females have horns, and they sport long prehensile tongues like the Giraffe family, enabling them to reach higher leaves. They love salt licks and will even eat burnt charcoal after fires.

-Bongos are about 330-900 lbs., and are upgraded a bit further from the other Huge Antelopes.
