THE SKRULLS
Created By:
Stan Lee & Jack Kirby
First Appearance: The Fantastic Four #2 (Jan. 1962)
Role: Space Mooks, THE Alien Invader Race
Group Affiliations: The Skrull Empire

The Skrulls- Shapeshifting Race of Evil:
-Skrulls are one of Marvel's oldest recurring villains (FF #2!), and have been used off-and-on over the years as the ultimate "Little Green Men" concept, frequently targetting the FF, then spending years as either random baddies or a potential mega-threat in a galaxy-spanning story, such as in The Kree/Skrull War and Secret Invasion. It's actually pretty cool- that you can have an alien race that can justify a million stories ("It was a SKRULL!" is an old cliche, but can be good), and then suddenly reheat into a main event threat any time you want. Initially, they appeared as weird, huge-eared toadlike men, to threaten the Fantastic Four with their scheming and innate shapeshifting abilities, and ended up being brainwashed into thinking they were literal cows at the story's end- other Skrulls were tricked into thinking the Earth was too dangerous to invade, and they fled.

-Subsequent years would add a lot to their backstory, and their place in the world. The villainous Super-Skrull became a regular threat in the FF. The race was tied in to Jack Kirby's "Deviants/Eternals" thing when it was revealed that their shapeshifting powers are a result of them being the DEVIANTS of their race- they destroyed the baseline and Eternal variants millennia ago (leaving only one Eternal, Kly'bn, acting as their god). They were the first to create a Cosmic Cube, which resulted in the Shaper of Worlds and the destruction of Skrull culture for a time. And they were a fairly peaceful exploratory race for a time before they encountered the warlike Kree, who stole their technology and created a Space War that has lasted generations. This was revealed in a series of stories, and the Skrulls were a major factor in The Kree/Skrull War, a long-running event in The Avengers. Here, the Avengers learned they were part of the "beachhead" between both Empires, and got mixed up in things. Rick Jones had to unleash the "Destiny Force" as a last-minute ass-pull to allow Earth's heroes to survive, and the conflict went on.

The Skrulls Become Minor Threats:
-Skrulls reappear frequently as adversaries, but not often in major ways. Their leadership is a bit poorly laid-out, as new Emperors rise all the time. Dorrek VII, the ruler during the '60s, is killed by his wife R'Klll, who takes over. She herself is killed when Galactus, Devourer of Worlds, arrives on Throneworld and consumes it, striking a terrible blow to the empire. With no seat of government, random factions break out and chaos reigns throughout the Empire. An Empress S'byll took over later, when the entire race had their shapeshifting powers removed by a "Gene Bomb". They tried to kidnap Nova, Herald of Galactus, hoping to blackmail him into destroying the Kree for them, but she was freed by the Silver Surfer, who later helped the Skrulls regain their powers when he was forced to help them against the Kree. The Warskrulls briefly replaced Professor X & Lilandra, but Deathbird & The X-Men allied to stop them. Later, Johnny Storm's wife Alicia was revealed to have been a Skrull all along, in one of the bigger effects Skrulls had had on Marvel continuity in AGES. This turned Lyja & Paibok into two of the few "important" Skrulls.

Secret Invasion & Annihilation:
-Finally, the race became more relevant than in decades, ironically at the low point of their power. This was via a double-whammy of stories- the epic Annihilation and the Event Story Secret Invasion. In the first, the Annihilation Wave from the Negative Zone spreads across the universe, destroying much of the Skrull Empire. Billions are killed, Super-Skrull gets a turn as a heroic figure (and oddly never quite loses this touch again), and the empire is in shambles, so it infiltrates Earth in their biggest invasion ever. They secretly replace many important heroes and jobbers alike (Hank Pym is a major factor) with Super-Skrulls (each with 4-5 powers taken from superheroes), with the new Queen Veranke replacing Spider-Woman, hoping that her importance to so many groups (HYDRA, S.H.I.E.L.D., heroes & villains) would prove important. And so they take over all the world's governments and make heroes distrust each other, as ANYONE could be a Skrull. This was actually a pretty well-written story with some good moments, and ends with Veranke being executed by Norman Osborn, who uses this goodwill to take over America's superhuman community in Dark Reign.

-The Skrull Empire is savaged by this, especially as Hercules and his "God Squad" execute their pantheon. Small factions prevail, but Super-Skrull finally takes command of the empire himself, becoming more of an "Honorable Badass", much like his Kree counterpart Ronan the Accuser. In this role, they aide Earth's heroes during Jon Hickman's Avengers mega-arc, fighting the agents from beyond that wish to destroy the universe. In the past few decades, the "Good Skrull" has become almost a Superhero Archetype, with 4-5 popping up on Earth, to the point where I joke they're as common as Drizz't Clones in fantasy RPGs- "the One Good Member of an Evil Race" being too good of an opportunity to pass up. Among them are Crusader, Effigy, Ethan Edwards, Lyja (kinda) Hulkling, Jazinda, and Replica- most of whom were created years apart, to be fair. But it's hilarious how many times I had to write "ANOTHER Good Skrull?!?" in character bios. The most notable Skrull superhero, however, has been Hulkling, the son of the Kree hero Captain Marvel and Dorrek VII's daughter, Princess Anelle. He has since become the NEW Emperor of the Skrulls.

-Most recently, the Kree & Skrulls have allied against the Cotati (a race once decimated by the Kree) in Empyre. However, Empress R'Klll is revealed to have survived the destruction of their homeworld and may have plans for her grandson...

The Skrulls As A Whole:
-Taken all in all, the Skrulls are a very good recurring enemy race. Altogether the most notable one in comics, actually. Like, they not only look alien (beyond even "Star Trek Aliens"), but have SUPER-POWERS. Their shapeshifting means they can result in all sorts of threats- they cause trust issues among heroes, can be revealed as a last-minute infiltrator, and are perfect spies. They've been over-used a lot over the years at different points, however, so it's good to let them "breathe" once in a while.

-Also, their culture was rarely well-defined for years- they were more or less just Generic Evil Conquerors. They were also known for tremendous sexual dimorphism, with the males being this hideous, big-chinned, wrinkly Frog-Men; while the women were sexy green chicks with only the tiniest of chin-wrinkles marring their Standard Comic Book Hot Chick features. Even Paragons of the race, like The Super-Skrull, were depicted as ugg-os. However, in the 2000s series Runaways, a Super-Skrull modification named Xavin basically goes "Oh, you're into women, my love? Well now I'm a chick." to his lesbian love interest, and acts like this is something Skrulls do "as casually as a human being changes their hair colour." Which is obviously a giant Retcon for a then-forty-year-old race of aliens, but I suppose there's no evidence this WASN'T true beforehand (except how pretty much every Shapeshifting "It was a SKRULL" moment involves a Skrull matching the target's sex). Oh, and now there's a few male Skrulls depicted in the female "like a beautiful human, but with slight chin folds" manner.

And then there's the Skrull Kill Krew, Grant Morrison and Mark Millar's charming hate group-turned-superheroes, and the much more recent (and much better done) Meet the Skrulls by Robbie Thompson, about a group of infiltrators in sort of a SF take on The Americans.

I immediately had to look it up because I thought there was no way they'd come up with this as an original story for a "FoxKids" cartoon.

It's a very truncated version, of course. Psycho-Man is behind it, but it's not about Sue's miscarriage, and Reed does break control by making her mad, all in about a 10 minute stretch. She does wreck house on the rest of the 4 before that, though.
That's one of the ones I actually watched, lol- I think I remember Reed even making a crack about how much he liked her "new costume" and they kiss at the end or something :).

Skrull Characters

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

Skrull Characters:
Kly'bn- Skrull Eternal and their primary God.
Sl'gur't- Leader of the Skrull Deviants of old and now a Goddess, always changing forms.
---
Criti Noll- High-end Skrull to replaced Hank Pym for a couple years' worth of stories.
Crusader II (Skrull)- Infiltrates The Initiative, but becomes a superhero who loves Earth and its pop culture. Helps the Initiative fight his own people, but is executed by the new 3-D Man because... well, he realized he was a Skrull. This is seen as tragic and ironic.
Devastator- Member of China's Dynasty/Ascendants super-team. So that cliché even applies to THEM.

Image

Emperor Dorrek VII: The Emperor during the start of Marvel's continuity. Executed by his wife in a coup.
Empress R'klll- Executes her husband Dorrek and rules until Galactus devours her homeworld, killing her with it. Reappears in Empyre.
Empress S'Byll- Takes over the squabbling empire, returning their lost shapeshifting powers. Kinda disappears at some point.
Empress Veranke- Usually called "Queen". Replaced Jessica Drew & led the Secret Invasion. Was killed by Norman Osborn.
Effigy- From Marvel's Lost Generation- infiltrates Earth after crash-landing here, but turns on his people. Thus, the first "Good Skrull" superhero chronologically.
Ethan Edwards- Given the "Superman" Origin Story and is raised by Christian parents into becoming the superhero "Moral Man". Later hates Earth because of the loss during Secret Invasion.
Hulkling- Young Avenger. Son of Captain Mar-Vell & Princess Annelle. Currently the Emperor "Dorrek VIII".
Jazinda- A Good Skrull, taken in by She-Hulk. The daughter of Super-Skrull and grew to love Earth's culture.
Lyja- Infiltrates the FF as Alicia Masters, but grows to love her husband, Johnny Storm. Dies for him but is revived and is an uncomfortable relic ever since.
Paibok the Power-Skrull- Not Super-Skrull. Is defined by this.
Replica- Another Good Skrull- this time from the futuristic Galactic Guardians.
Skrull X- Robot with Super-Skrull's powers. Minor part of Marv Wolfman's FF run.
Super-Skrull- The most recurring Skrull menace. Eventually shifts into a more "Bad-Ass Warrior" archetype.
Talos- One-off Skrull foe later used in Annihilation and Howard the Duck. His whole concept is that he was a cyborg and was thus the only Skrull who couldn't alter his form. He was used as a standard Skrull in the Captain Marvel movie, but was a good guy.
Titannus- Hulk-tier "Super-Skrull".
Xavin- Super-Skrull who joins the Runaways. Trans icon because she plays with the idea of gender and sex.

-Common Skrulls are more costly than Kree ones, for obvious reasons (they have honest-to-God SUPER POWERS). Their Shapeshifting actually isn't very powerful beyond giving them unique appearances (offering a single rank in Shapeshift for perhaps some Body Weaponry, Elongation or something like that), as Skrulls don't just gain superhuman strength or anything at-will. They're basically like Kree plus that little Power Template otherwise, just a bit weaker and easier to kill. Any elite Skrulls will no doubt have INSANELY high Deception scores, in addition to enhanced Presence and fighting ability. Lower-level Skrulls will probably lose the Shapeshift Power entirely and get stuck with a "mere" 4 ranks of Morph.

-Skrulls are prone to absolutely yanking powers out of their asses DECADES after their introduction, owing to their Shapeshifting abilities. Of particular note are their occasionally sprouting wings and FLYING, despite never having done so, even if it would have been tremendously-useful in past stories; and Regeneration, which has been implied here or there in comics.

One of the best twists for me was In Captain Marvel where the Skrulls were turned into good guys. While i generally use them as bad guys it was sitll a crazy curveball to everyone expectations and it worked brilliantly

Yeah, that whole 'gender doesn't matter' thing with Xavin was pretty effing stupid.

One of the things I enjoyed about Secret Invasion was that I detected a thread where the Skrulls seemed to genuinely mean the people of Earth well; they just thought we'd be better off under their rule. I played that up when my X-Men campaign went through that period of Marvel history. The PCs ended up stealing the Skrull invasion ship (which gave Utopia access to Skrull nano-forge technology, which led to Richards and Stark outsourcing some manufacturing of their inventions) and making lasting friends with one of their leaders the super-Skrull Illuminatus, who espoused a take on noblesse oblige toward those the Skrulls ruled.

I took Skrull genders as being more personality and religion-based. If you identify more with Sl'gur't, you take a more feminine form; if you identify more with Kly'bn, you identify as male. Kly'bn was the "he" in the invasion slogan, "He loves you," and tended to be the more idealistic of the two, while Sl'gur't was more practical and exploitive. Kly'bn embodied the Skrullness of Skrulls, the constants; Sl'gur't was the ever-changing adaptable one.

Reputation (Failure in Assaulting Earth)- The Skrulls have a tendency to view Kl'rt as a failure, since he has repeatedly lost to the very people he was created to fight. He is also a scapegoat for the repeated failed invasions of Earth.
Enemy (Kree, Shi'ar)- As a Skrull, Kl'rt has a natural enmity with the two other super-powerful races in the universe.
Enemy (The Fantastic Four)- Kl'rt was created to fight the FF, and his failure to do so still irks him.

Total: Abilities: 92 / Skills: 54--26 / Advantages: 27 / Powers: 163 / Defenses: 17 (325)

The Super-Skrull- Unexpected Bad-Ass:
-I always thought the Super-Skrull was an amazingly cool idea. Like Mimic and Amazo, it's always awesome to see what happens when the heroes have to fight someone who matches ALL of their super-powers on an even level. Super-Strength, Durability, Blasts, Auras & Invisibility are all pain in the ass powers that can still be overcome. But ALL AT ONCE? Try fighting an Invisible powerhouse who can blast you with fire, invisible battering rams and also hit your ass from a dozen metres away.

-His initial origin has him SUPERIOR to the FF in any of their respective abilities, and he's beaten only once Reed discovers that his powers come via an interstellar beam sent from the Skrull Homeworld- they're not internalized, so Reed is able to prevent him from accessing his abilities and the FF wins. In his second appearance, he tries to kill the FF again, but he's stopped by Sue & Johnny's father Franklin Storm, who dies in the process. After this, his sense of menace is somewhat-diminished- though he's still a fearsome opponent, he instead becomes a bit of a high-end "Jobber For Hire", being sent back to Earth time and time again to lose to a variety of high-profile superheroes, such as Thor and Captain Mar-Vell. So while he wasn't quite "Wrecking Crew" level, he was still a Journeyman Villain there for a lot of one-off stories. He's temporarily trapped in the Van Allen Belt after a Marvel Team-Up shot against Spider-Man & Carol Danvers (a storyline notable for the great Claremont/Byrne team working on it, and the established fact that Kl'rt is WAY too much for either hero to take on).

Later Super-Skrull:
-Later, he's freed and, after a temporary brush with cancer, he goes right back to Jobbing Through the Universe, fighting Alpha Flight's Sasquatch, Iron Fist and others- he's even brainwashed into thinking he's an Earth boy named Bobby Wright, who "transforms" into the super-powered Captain Hero, and kills Iron Fist (this stupid, STUPID death is later undone by John Byrne, who used a ton of his Namor run to undo Christopher Priest's Power Man & Iron Fist ending). The whole "Captain Hero" thing was, in fact, a retcon meant to do away with Bobby Wright anyways, and fans were so glad to have the stupid "Iron Fist is killed by being pummelled to death while asleep" thing undone that they were totally willing to accept this, even if Super-Skrull's powers didn't match up totally to Captain Hero's. Hell, Byrne even wrote out his cancer the same way ("Oh, the villain Master Khan fixed him!").

-In any case, he does some other stuff (including teaming up with S'Byll, a claimant to the Skrull throne). He doesn't do much else in the '90s, but comes back in a BIG way during Annihilation, where he becomes the face of the Skrull Empire, fighting against the Annihilation Wave. He gets his own Limited Series, a robotic love interest, and more- he was seriously getting a REALLY big push. He sacrificed his life temporarily, and began teaming up with RONAN of all people, this time saving the Kree Empire (the Skrulls' most-ancient enemies) from the Phalanx Invasion. By this point, the war hero was done so well as a character that he did a Face Turn, turning against his own people during the Secret Invasion story arc. Unfortunately, he falls a bit by the wayside (he was noticeably less-important after the first Annihilation Event had ended- they even offed his girlfriend!), to the point where him finally being crowned SKRULL EMPEROR is mostly in the backdrop to Hickman's huge Infinity 9,000-part story. Not bad for the guy whose sole job was "Elite Jobber To The Stars".

-Super-Skrull has since been peacefully deposed by Hulkling, now Dorrek VIII, and his daughter Jazinda was revealed to be an embarrassment to the family. He nearly honor-killed her for a lack of hatred against humans, but she escaped and befriended She-Hulk as one of eight or nine "Good Skrulls" at Marvel. Kl'rt was revealed to have been the agent who killed Hulkling's mother, Princess Anelle- he has since regretted it, as his own mother had worked for Anelle. Hulkling demotes him to a non-military detail as a way to live with his guilt.

Super-Skrull- High-End Elite Villain:
-You want excessive power, and tons of annoying math in mid-round? Kl'rt's your guy. He has Mandarin-level complexity in combat, being able to switch amongst FIFTEEN fairly unique powers each round, mixing-and-matching at will (fighting a high-powered Blaster? Throw up Ben's Durability with Sue's Force Shield! Fighting a high-durability guy? Use the Penetrating Fire Blast! Surrounded? Use Flame Aura or Nova Flame! In a tight spot with little escape? Plastic-like Insubstantial!). Most of the powers are Dynamic, those that are tougher to use are simple Alt-Effects he can only use sparingly, one at a time. Add all that to a lot of Skills, some fighting talent, and more, and you've got one of the scariest guys ever to touch down to Earth and slug it out. He's missing a bunch of Fantastic Four side-tricks, but hey, he's only packing their powers at the time they were copied (plus a bit extra), and you can't even de-power him now that they've dropped that whole "A satellite empowers him" part. Generally speaking, he'd make a mess out of almost any Earth-bound hero.

-Kl'rt is truly mighty with his Power Level as well- PL 12.5 unarmed (he's a better fighter than Ben), PL 11.5 Flame Aura, PL 13 Force Ram, PL 12 Fire, some Hypnosis, and various Immunities. With the Force Field (he doesn't always use it- preferring the Blasts) he reaches PL 13 Defensively as well. He's enough to beat the entire FF in his opening salvo, but not enough to beat them if they're fighting smart, and all at once ("Every Power At Once" guys can be tricky to pull off in M&M, as numbers REALLY work to the outnumbering side's advantage). As expected, he's pricey as all hell- you can't have this amount of versatility and expect to stay within any kind of affordable range.

My question of the Super Skrull has always been how did his powers increase to the level of the FF? I do not mean with your build stats Jab--I mean with the comics.

I mean at first, it was based off of the antenna that broadcast the beam to him. I am sure there must also be some increase over time and with usage, just like the FF themselves.

But the FF also had their powers magnified by other means that he did not, so his should not be the same. For instance, the Mental Wave device that Reed first used on Sue in the second year which spawned her Invisible Force Field powers. Another example would be the Thunder Horn used with the Inhumans, the age-reversal ray of the Sphinx/Galactus and for Sue, the Psycho Man playing with her mind which expanded her ideas of usage for her Invisible Force items.

-This goofy-ass character is pretty clearly deliberately-silly, being an obvious Captain Marvel analogue (a young orphaned boy given the power to turn into a Flying Brick with a cape- though he more clearly resembles Superman, owing to the "CH" chest insignia). However, he lacked maturity, and when given super-human powers by a meteor, he often throws temper tantrums when he doesn't get his way (like when Power Man & Iron Fist reject him for membership in Heroes For Hire). Discovering that his powers were killing him, he nonetheless got taken in by the HoH, where he became a minor supporting character living at Project Pegasus.

-However, 14 issues later, in the final issue of Power Man and Iron Fist, he is given the ignominious role of killing off Danny Rand- as the series was ending, Christopher Priest figured he'd just kill off one of the main heroes. Exactly HOW this decision was reached, I could not tell you- all I can tell you is that it was short-sighted, dumb, and worst of all, poorly-written. Danny did not die a hero- he was pummelled to death WHILE HE WAS ASLEEP, by a tantrum-tossing Captain Hero!

-This was so imbecilic that John Byrne, on his Namor writing assignment four years later, decided to Retcon basically the entire last year of PM & IF (Byrne was a tad proprietary, as he'd made his bones at Marvel on Danny's book). First off, Danny was never dead- oh no, that was a sentient PLANT that just LOOKED like Danny Rand! Oh yeah! And Captain Hero/Bobby Wright was never a real person! That was SUPER-SKRULL, who had lost his memory! Never mind that some of the powers didn't match up! Oh, and some OTHER side character in that book was ALSO in disguise! This was clumsy and stupid and really pointless, of course, and COMPLETELY irrelevant to a book starring friggin' NAMOR THE SUB-MARINER, but absolutely everyone had zero problem accepting it, because it successfully-erased all the stupidity of even a D-List Marvel Hero being taken out of the sandbox thanks to something that dumb. Now, the whole "Iron Fist Died" thing is a mere eyeblink in history- the hallmark of a successful, if clumsy, Retcon.

-Some of Captain Hero's powers match up pretty well with Super-Skrull, which makes it a solid Retcon... but it doesn't explain Insubstantial. Oh well, there's some radiation thing involved, so let's say that's what did it. Captain Hero is a low-end, unskilled Brick, with the maturity of a child.

From what i understand, he was subjected to a Cosmic Ray Chamber with the Antenna was activated when he was on the homeworld (the process was Highly painful and what gave him Cancer originally).

-Queen Veranke showed up as the new ruler of the Skrull Empire, but more dramatically, was revealed to have been SPIDER-WOMAN for the entire duration of Bendis's run on The New Avengers! Thus, the big reinvention of Jessica Drew (said to be a fave of Bendis) was all a lie, and she was actually this evil Queen. Drew was chosen because she'd been allied with S.H.I.E.LD., HYDRA and various superheroes. Her backstory states that she was a prophet of sorts, regrouping her people after Emperor Dorrek VII ignored her warnings that Galactus was coming for Throneworld. However, when they took over the world's governments, they were lured into an open battle in Central Park, where she was easily killed by Earth's defenders- Norman Obsorn fired the final shot. Ultimately, for all her importance, she's been rather forgotten.

-Queen Veranke effectively combines Jessica Drew's power-set with that of a Skrull, and adds some stuff that intergalactic leaders would have, like high charisma.
