Franklin Richards- Why Other Superheroes Didn't Have Kids:
-Oh man, I don't even know where to start. So few people in comics have kids (in the old days, heroes were meant to be as sexless as possible, so they often had some token "Girlfriend" character around- even cartoon characters only had NEPHEWS so we'd never think they'd actually had sex), so Franklin stands out as a special case. Hell, he's probably the reason nobody ELSE in comics has kids! It was a great, noble idea- Reed & Sue having babies and all that, like natural couples do- something totally different for comics. The Marvel Universe moved constantly forward, and characterization did as well, to limits yet unseen in the comic book medium, so it made perfect sense for the loving, married couple to have offspring. But writers just couldn't leave it alone- he gained Super-Jesus powers as a toddler, got left alone by his parents a lot (the '80s was a really angsty time for comic book characters, even children), got kidnapped and sent to be raised in the future by his anti-hero grandfather, sent back as a super-powered adult, had a future-baby with Rachel Summers that turned out to be an evil Demi-God, then came back as a kid again, and his age is all over the map... he's pretty much the embodiment of messed-up continuity.

-Franklin debuted in the late '60s, written by Stan & Jack, and pretty quickly showcased some powers when he was a toddler- Reed shut down his mind temporarily to get a better hang on them, but they "burned out" a bit and went back to dormancy after Ultron tried to use the boy's powers. COUNTLESS super-villains tried to attack the FF through Franklin, and he'd pull out last-minute superpower saves just as countlessly, to the point where writers would often try to de-power him (Reed put in psychic inhibitors), just as much as others would use him to write things out. He joined Power Pack in the 1980s, living with them while his parents were at Avengers Mansion (and thus getting used to having "siblings"), and his mutant status became a public issue. Throughout most of this time, Franklin was barely above toddler-age after 20 years of existence. An issue had developed- not every writer wanted to be "bogged down" with kids, so he was often written out... but how do you write out someone's CHILD?

Psi-Lord & Heroes Reborn:
-Franklin was later kidnapped by his time-travelling grandfather Nathaniel, and was swapped out with his teenage counterpart, Psi-Lord, who was raised in a dimension outside of time. Yup- the Comic Book Super-Age-Up. I would assume this drove his parents nuts. This Franklin created the short-lived "Fantastic Force" as a spin-off book, and used more basic, low-level powers- Telepathy, Precognition & Psionic Energy Blasts. This came off like a combination of a cash-grab and ripping off the X-Men (all the Psionic stuff)... so also a cash-grab. He removed the Malice personality from his mother, but ended up struggling with it himself until he put it in the mind of the alternate-Reed, the Dark Raider. Eventually, Nathaniel revealed the terrible "potential future" where Franklin & Rachel Summers would have a baby who would become the mega-villain Hyperstorm- the villain "diverted attention" from himself by swapping in Young Franklin for Teen Franklin at the exact point Nathaniel abducted him, so I guess Young Franklin was back now?

-And then he and his parents are separated AGAIN, as they die during the "Onslaught" attacks. Franklin becomes a Generation-X supporting character and befriends Leech again (they met during Power Pack), but he ultimately ends up the plot device that brings the heroes back- his all-powerful abilities had caused every dead hero to be "reborn" in an alternate Earth, and finally the heroes returned. And just as his greatest power feat ever was accomplished (The Celestials even recognize him as being on a level with them), he was de-powered reforming Galactus during the fight against Abraxas and rescuing his stillborn sister- here, he finally becomes a big brother. By this point, he appears to be 10-11.

The Future Foundation:
-Several years of FF stories follow, and in the Jon Hickman run, an elder Franklin & Valeria arrive, reawakening young Franklin's powers and tutoring him in secret. Franklin and a reborn Galactus (saved by young Franklin) defeat the three "Mad Celestials" at the core of this arc after a huge battle, and Franklin learns that he is likely immortal. With another big Hickman arc rebooting everything, Franklin disappears along with his immediate family- this allows Marvel to age him up outside of our time, and he reappears as a snotty TEENAGER of all things! Dyeing his hair black, he deals with competitiveness as his sister's genius proves to be more attention-grabbing than his iffy powers, but he manages to score his "Flying Vehicle" license over the absent-minded Val in a cute bit. Here, Franklin is more rebellious and tends to talk back, which is an interesting shift from the more quasi-useless, adoring kid of yore. Ultimately, however, he couldn't escape one more weird Retcon- it was revealed that Franklin was NEVER a mutant- his powers simply made people see him as one. And the new isolationist X-Men, who were all "no, you need to be with us" are like "nah, you suck- you can't stay here now". So, uh, we'll see where THAT goes.

Franklin as a Whole:
-... HOO BOY. Like fifty years of existence and he was just kind of a MESS. And this is why most books are gun-shy about introducing babies. He had to remain a toddler for years, received a couple of sudden "oh, time passed and you didn't see it" age-ups, aged a bit normally at OTHER times, and more. And some writer made the bone-headed decision that "Oh, Franklin is the Ultimate God-Tier Cosmic Guy", which has provided even more messes than THAT. Like, seriously, they had to put him in a coma while he was a friggin' toddler, de-power him with Power Pack, then the FF, then as Psi-Lord, then twice more in modern times, all because they decided he needed to be a high-level Reality Warper! So there's this never-ending see-saw of his powers disappearing then coming back, and they're just too tantalizing for most writers, because they also serve as the ultimate "Mulligan"- can't write your way out of a story? Just add FRANKLIN!

Franklin's Beyond-Omega-Level Powers:
-Franklin's powers are barely scaled-down from some other Cosmic Beings- he may one day be their equal, but not quite yet. ADULT Franklin has recently come to the modern timeline and proven himself more powerful than a gang of Celestials, but the younger version is weaker, and is prone to random de-powerings (or sometimes just having Uncontrolled Powers). Arguably his greatest feat was an instance of creating an entire WORLD that he carried around in the form of a ball- the source of Heroes Reborn. So effectively his powers are almost the ultimate "GM Trick", as they can make anything happen, ever, and it's largely uncontrolled if and when it does.

-Deciding the power level of a guy who was at one point PL 20 with Variable Power out the yin-yang is pretty tough but with Power Pack, Franklin only had two powers, both of which were more strategic than fight-worthy- allowing him to predict what was going to happen, and to trick and confuse enemies into thinking his "Dream Self" (a combo of Remote Senses because the Self can see, and Illusion because enemies think Franklin is there) is really him. Otherwise, he's a helpless little kid, and in serious trouble against a real threat.

You know, here's what they COULD do with Franky(at least timeline/Power wise):
-- Team him up with Power Pack with his "Taddletale" power set being his first.
-- Traumatized by his Family's death during Onslaught his Powers spike, creating Heroes Reborn but temporarily "shorting out".
-- The whole Psi-Lord & Fantastic Force thing happens, showing the world what Franklin COULD'VE been if said powers hadn't shorted.
-- Everything else the writer's want to do is taken from these two "Time branches" revealing that Franklin doesn't have Cosmic Power's, but Time Powers(specifically, anything involving his own "What If?" timelines).

Total: Abilities: 28 / Skills: 44--22 / Advantages: 0 / Powers: 5 / Defenses: 13 (74)

-A character whose origin is so bizarre and confusing I can barely even make sense of it, Valeria was initially a mystery Future Daughter of The Invisible Woman and DOCTOR DOOM, but was eventually revealed as the miscarried daughter Sue was pregnant with years before. Franklin, her older brother, uses Roma's guidance to save the child, depositing her into a place where she could be raised by ANOTHER Sue (who married a heroic Doom). This Valeria is used by Roma to team up with Franklin in order to stop a Generic Cosmic Menace named Abraxas, at which point she is regressed into a fetus and placed into Sue's womb once again thanks to Reed "Rebooting" the universe without Abraxas via the Ultimate Nullifier.

-When the birthing proves difficult, Doctor Doom is summoned to save the child, and as payment, he demands to be allowed to name her, as well as being a godfather of sorts. She ages up rapidly (since this is comics, and WRITING BABIES IS HARD), and ends up developing Reed-like Intelligence at a young age, becoming a little miss smartypants in the meantime. Thankfully they keep her from being TOO annoying, since she's delightfully amoral, and brings out a nurturing side in DOCTOR DOOM of all people. Because MAN could a character like this become annoying after a point. But instead of being smug or overconfident (an absolute DEATH-KNELL for a character's popularity- of all the things you should be, smug is at the BOTTOM of the list- it's possibly the single most unappealing trait a person could have), she's kind of just aggressive and absent-minded, and her recklessness led to a lot of fun stories in the Hickman run, as well as other books (the Richards kids have a cute relationship with their babysitter, X-23). It's more like Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius than "Valeria solves everything", as she rarely saved the day. And her relationship with Doom was hilarious- watching him dote on her and be super-protective is an epic change for one of Marvel's greatest.

-Recent years have had Valeria age up a bit- she's still an inventor, and still a tad reckless, but is older and more stoic about things.
-The "future version" had Invisible Woman-like powers (often using them to mimic Super-Strength power punches), and could also neutralize Franklin's powers, and "dance" through time. The more well-known version is just a little girl, but a SUPER-Genius who rivals her own father's intellect, even NOW. She's apparently supposed to be SMARTER, but she hasn't built nearly enough stuff to truly justify that at this point- give her a few years and we'll see.

The FF Moloids

THE FUTURE FOUNDATION MOLOIDS (Tong, Turg, Mik & Korr)
Created By:
Jon Hickman & Dale Eaglesham
First Appearance: The Fantastic Four #575 (March 2010)
Role: Evolved Moloids
Group Affiliations: Subterranea, The Future Foundation

-A quartet of evolved, intelligent Moloids were randomly added to the Fantastic Four title under Hickman, and have stuck around since then. All wearing suits with different numbers on them, Franklin & Valeria adding #5 & 6 to the original Four. Turg (#9) was struck by a car when they arrived on the surface, and now survives as a floating head in a jar. Mik (#10) is very deadpan, and typically acts as the leader. Korr (#11) is a bit more smiley, typically wearing t-shirts- he arrived more or less as a baby, and has slowly aged up a bit. Tong (#12) later says she identifies as female, which, in an almost adorably over-virtuous way, one of the FF is all "That is SO BEAUTIFUL"- she is thereafter seen wearing dresses.

Franklin Richards is made of stupid.
Valeria Richards is a great idea, and one of the best parts of Doctor Doom lore. I just hate the way they just kept adding more powers and weirdness to Frank. If anyone is in desperate need of a retcon, it is Franklin.

I agree that kids are one of the reasons that a sliding time scale in comics is terrible. Have the comic progress through time, maybe not at a 1:1 scale, but stop having this sliding time scale. Of all the things in comics I dislike, this is the one that I despise the most.

VIL & WU
Created By:
Jon Hickman & Neal Edwards
First Appearance: The Fantastic Four #576 (April 2010)
Role: Fish People
Group Affiliations: Old Atlantis, The Future Foundation

-In a very peculiar side-arc, we meet the denizens of Old Atlantis, who are much more fishlike than Namor's people- they speak mythically and choose to make Susan Richards their go-between with the surface world. Two of their children- heirs to the throne, are sent to learn with the Future Foundation. I can remember not one thing about either of them, and basically forgot they existed. There's... a BIT too many of these kids. Vil (#14) is female, and Wu (#15) is male.

Did someone forget how old this character was supposed to be, lol?

ONOME
Created By:
Jon Hickman & Gabriel Hernandez Walta
First Appearance: FF #19 (Aug. 2012)
Role: Wakandan Student
Group Affiliations: Wakanda, The Future Foundation

-Adding to the Future Foundation after the introduction of the others is Onome, who hails from Wakanda (giving the FF another link to the Black Panther- he debuted in their book, after all). She's pretty much just another face, but they probably needed "another human" in this motley crew of oddities.

I think they were overreacting due to Valeria's popularity("wow, reader's really likes this kid! Let's add more and turn 'em into a DAYCARE!"), but some of these kids weren't bad ideas(T'Challa had to've had an Heir by that point, otherwise he'd never be able to leave frikkin' Wakanda!) ...

Diablo- Stan's Greatest Regret:
-Stan Lee calls Diablo his "greatest regret"- "When you create a character, you should feel you know him"- Stan can't remember the character, who he is, or why he did what he did.

-Diablo's a would-be major Fantastic Four villain who ends up being kind of a disappointment, I think, given that he has a very unique gimmick (he's a high-powered alchemist) and one of the best villain names going. He's just... he's the guy you fight for a couple issues between Doctor Doom stories, you know? The goofy mask and moustache really don't help him. It's really too bad, because his Alchemy is a great way to write "Every Power Ever" fights, while also giving him certain limitations (no Mind-Reading/Force Field combo stuff- he's limited to what he can carry and activate at once). But he's just... not a CHARACTER. His early gimmick was to use Alchemy to strike it rich, but that was undone immediately, and he's just been a power-hungry schemer ever since. And there's a LOT of those guys- what OTHER reason does he have to exist? He should try to be, like... searching for new chemicals, trying to create new elements, doing all sorts of wild stuff that can lure superheroes to him... but no- he's just some douchey 'stached guy with a grudge.

Diablo's History:
-Diable is known as less of a powerhouse and more as a trickster- he is a skilled alchemist from 9th Century Spain, selling his soul to the demon Mephisto for a long life- making a pact with vampires, he is ultimately attacked by an angry mob and buried alive. A century later, the FF find his crypt while on vacation (in TRANSYLVANIA?), unwittingly unleashing him. He convinces the Thing to work for him for a year, after which he will become fully human, and Diablo quickly becomes fabulously wealthy selling his alchemical concoctions. However, Reed Richards discovers his secret- that his alchemy is limited by time, and will eventually fail. This destroy's Diablo's reputation just as he attempts to use alchemy to take over the world- the Thing turns on him and chases him into his crypt, where he and the Torch attempt to make it permanent.

-Diablo eventually returns and becomes a regular FF foe- he gives life to the android Dragon Man and sends it against them, then later the Avengers. He clashes with DOCTOR DOOM a few times, once using Darkoth against him, but is betrayed. He also fights Crystal, Iron Man and Alpha Flight a couple of times, and is part of a back-up Spider-Man arc (Erik Larsen was writing a Sinister Six story, but his house burned down and he needed more time). He destroys the FF's "Pier 4" base, but aides them against Shuma-Gorath. In many of these stories, he seems to die, but his pseudo-mystical abilities generally leave him a recurring threat. He gets used every few years is random stories, at one point joining the Shadow Council's Masters of Evil, cloning a Moloid and being beaten by an Inhuman called Mosaic, and losing to a reformed Doctor Doom during AXIS- so essentially, he's a high-end Journeyman Villain: not a TOTAL jobber, but an elite foe who nonetheless constantly loses. Like, it takes an issue or two instead of just a single fight.

Diablo's Powers:
-Essentially, Diablo acts like a Wizard, but more with the Gadgets power than the Magic one- he can replicate just about any effect, as long as he has his potion & elixir-filled costume, and it takes him relatively little time to switch out one power for another. He's got a huge list of things he can do (it's basically Variable Power, really), at a pretty good level of effectiveness, though he's still rather cheap for someone who threatens the ENTIRE Fantastic Four on occasion. I suppose that's because he's more of a planner and "Minion Guy" that real powerhouse- he can hold the FF down with his Snares, and burn them with his Acids, but he's not a good enough fighter to beat them in a straight-up brawl (like most Mages, he's a Glass Cannon that can't take a punch, and needs that Summon Animated Object power of his).

I ran an old Marvel game using the FASERIP rules in which Diablo played an important supporting role. My player (as it was just me and one other guy) had a long story arc when his character travelled uncontrollably through time. When she (the character being female), a sorceress, met Diablo, they actually hit it off really well. Instead of the usual hero-villain dynamic, they became cautious allies. Neither could trust the other, but Diablo did help her out, sometimes.

-Darkoth the Death Demon is a weird little story, and yet another example of that 1970s period of randomly-introduced failed characters in Marvel Comics. He was Major Desmond Pitt, an old friend of Ben Grimm's from the Air Force (this was around when comics started introducing new characters to heroes' backstories that inevitably turned into super-villains or died- witness the Spider-books from this time period), and he was pretending to be a spy to infiltrate Dr. Doom's Latverian spy ring. Then he screwed up and got caught. Bad idea. Doom had him tortured and transformed into a slave, but Darkoth rebelled and aided the FF, dying in the process.

-Diablo revived him, and again he betrayed his boss and died. A third story featured him being used by Mephisto (seriously? This happens THREE TIMES?) against Thor, as a Hell-bound demon. Finally, he regains his personality and defeats S'ym in Otherplace, which is the same as Limbo, and is either ruled by Magik, Belasco or N'astirh depending on the era... I'd ask more questions, but when dealing with Excalibur comics AND Limbo it's best to just ignore logic and assume he was dropping some KILLER acid at the time. He consumes S'ym and takes the Soulsword, and considers killing himself in order to destroy the realm entirely (as the wielder of the Soulsword IS Limbo, and their death will destroy it with them), but Meggan convinces him to turn it into a realm of peace. I think that's it for him, as last we saw, he was ruling Otherplace with the Soulsword, which has now found it's place with Magik again- no sign of Darkoth whatsoever. His last appearance was in *1991*, which is an extremely long disappearance even for an obscure Marvel character, and probably longer than anyone else on this build-set.

-Darkoth is a good PL 11, since he's supposed to be tough enough to take over Limbo/Otherplace and fight Thor for over an hour. He's a Class 50 Powerhouse with extra powers constantly being added in every story (Diablo gave him Insubstantial & greater strength, for example), leaving him with tons of options in combat, Poisoned Claws, a Tail, Life Support, Flight, a Confusion Beam, a Fatigue Ray, a Blast, and phasing abilities. I mean, seriously, that is a BUTT-LOAD of powers, and thus he's going to be dangerous no matter what (these powers were often rarely-used, implying that they're Tiring or something).

A guy named Darkoth the Death Demon and he wasn't created in the 90s? I bet Liefeld and crew were cursing that the name was already used.

When I first read about Darkoth (in the Book of the Dead issues of the TOHOTMUDE) I immediately said, "this sounds like a retcon". And in fact, Darkoth's back story about being Ben's old buddy was apparently introduced four years after his first appearance, by a completely different team of writers.
"I'm sorry. I love you. I'm not sorry I love you."
