I liked that explanation too. Have they ever stated a canonical reason for the Earth-616 version of Galactus picks the worlds he does (and why he keeps trying to eat Earth)?Curbludgeon wrote: ↑Thu Feb 25, 2021 11:02 am I'd in no way want it for mainline continuity, but I did like Earth X's fox-in-the-henhouse approach to how Galactus selects targets, namely being only those in which Celestials had previously implanted vibranium eggs of their young.

I really liked linking Galactus, the Celestials, the Eternals, the mutants, and Vibranium into one consistent mythology.
Well, as consistent as anything in comics.

-Stardust was the most recent Herald created by the timem of Annihilation, and they're one of the most interesting- a genderless body of cosmic energy. Unfortunately, Stardust seems to have become a victim of "Back-To-Basics Syndrome", as the next creators to use Galactus seem to have FORGOTTEN that the big guy now has two Heralds, and so Stardust has been left in the lurch, while the Surfer still gets to kick around. Stardust debuts fighting Beta Ray Bill in a one-shot, having led Galactus to feed on New Korbin (Bill's people's new home)- they fight on a few occasions, with Stardust attempting to trap Bill within a dimension full of evil assholes (insert joke about political party you hate here)- the two then "Enemy Mined" into working together to stop an evil Cosmic Entity who was unleashed from the same dimension- Bill escapes, but Stardust was left behind.
-Stardust reappears in Annihilation, working alongside a Fellow Forgotten New Herald named Red Shift. Stardust survives the big event (unlike Red Shift, Morg & Air-Walker), and gets some more backstory- a genderless energy being called an "Ethereal", Lambda-Zero was empowered by Galactus. Stardust is confronted by the last members of his race, and kills them in the ensuing conflagration- out of loyalty for Galactus, they offer up the last members of the Ethereals. Stardust then confesses LOVE for Galactus! And of course never apears again, even in the Slott/Allred Silver Surfer series, when Galactus himself shows up. The character was called "he" a few times, but later adopted a feminine appearance and identity after Cheryl Hines played the character in Marvel SuperHero Squad. Not that it matters- the character hasn't reappeared since the first Annihilation.
-Issues about Stardust's gender continue to pop up, as he's exclusively-refered to as "he" in his debut, by the other Heralds, and by Galactus himself. Despite that, "he" is stated to have no gender. It appears even COSMIC BEINGS default to male pronouns in situations. Now if only Stardust had breasts or a big bow on his head, then we'd know for SURE.
-Stardust is one of the most powerful Heralds, and quite expensive, because of his weird physiology (he's a solid being, unlike many "Energy Guy" types, and is essentially a Construct with no Fortitude, but he's otherwise able to regenerate from nearly any kind of damage over time). Another PL 15, he slugged it out with Beta-Ray Bill for a good while, and he regenerated from an attack that KILLED Red Shift (another Herald-level being), so you know he's extremely powerful.

The cowl covers up a lot of grey hairs, not to mention the fine lines and wrinkles, but I tell ya, I just don't fill out these tights like I used too... and Alfred seems to have shrunk my utility belt in the wash. That's why it's so tight, right?

My repetition of the fact that both women are eternally perfect is well known, lol. Neal Adams has blocked my phone number and stopped answering my e-mails and letters. Well, mostly. His lawyers responded to my last letter with something called a "personal restraining order." The scamps.

-The Fallen One is an example of one of my Least-Favorite Comic Book Devices- the "Everything You Know Is Wrong" Retcon Character. Turns out that the Silver Surfer WASN'T the first Herald of Galactus- it was THIS guy! Keith Giffen & Ron Lim created him for the Thanos solo book, having been empowered by "Dark Energy" instead of the Power Cosmic. However, he turns out to be cruel, and is imprisoned by Galactus- he escapes several times, but is always beaten by his former master.
-In Annihilation, we get more backstory- Star-Lord had encountered him ages ago, and tried to stop his rampage. After initially losing badly, Star-Lord destroyed an entire planet to halt the Fallen One, imprisoning him then turning himself in for the ending of thousands of lives. Both are locked in the Kyln- a cosmic prison. When the Kyln blows up during Annihilation, the Fallen One attacks Galactus, who teleports him to Thanos, who tricks him into blowing up a gas giant- defeating him. Then Thanos mentally enslaves the Fallen One to act as HIS own Herald, and then he's found and murdered by the Cosmic Beings Aegis & Tenebrous, who show Thanos his corpse as a sign of contempt. Which seems like a REALLY ignominious, humiliating ending- I would think politics & personal conflict were involved, except Giffen himself was writing at this point, meaning that he was just "Spring Cleaning" his own guys, much like he did with Lunatik in that same story.
-I figure The Fallen One for a Herald-Class being as normal, around Surfer's level (he blew up a really big spaceship in one shot- quite possible with a Power Attacking +19 attack). His "Black Matter" power source isn't really any different from the Power Cosmic with his stats, but it allows for more Hyper-Spatial Travel, and he can probably unweave material, given that Black Matter is the matter by which universes become solvent or some crap.

Re: Jab’s Builds! (Surfer! Terrax! Nova! Morg! Stardust!)
I don't mind the idea that Norrin Radd wasn't the first Herald of Galactus... I mean, the guy's been alive sine before the dawn of time, so it's understandable that the Silver Surfer wasn't his first Herald. But, yeah, I do hate the "Everything You Know Is Wrong" Retcon trope (c.f., Vulcan) and wish they'd avoided it here.
Like, the big guy is 13.8 billion-with-a-B years old. It would make perfect sense for him to have had many Heralds before Norrin... But you could make Norrin unique by being the fist of them to ever rebel against his master. Preserving the whole God and his Fallen Angel mythos.

I always thought this guy, the Fallen One and Tyrant were the strongest, most powerful 2 Heralds, and that they both fought Galactus, winning against him and gaining their freedom. is this incorrect?

Praeter
PRAETER (Pastor Mike)
Created By: Matt Fraction & Oliver Coipel
First Appearance: The Mighty Thor #1 (June 2011)
Role: Normal Guy-Turned-Herald
Group Affiliations: The Heralds of Galactus
-Heavens to Murgatroyd, there's ANOTHER Herald on the block! This one is a Thor side character from Matt Fraction's run- an elderly Pastor named Mike. He felt conflicted with his belief system when actual Norse Gods arrived in his Oklahoma community. He led the town against the Asgardians repeatedly, insisting they leave, but ultimately, Galactus showed up. He sought the Worldheart in Asgard, but the Silver Surfer volunteered to stay and watch over it- Mike was chosen as the new Herald to replace him. It was hoped that he might become the conscience Galactus needed to spare more lives. The character hasn't appeared in ages, as far as I can tell.
-Praeter's powers are largely unknown.
