-Jagwar is the de facto leader of the Mighty Mutanimals, a spin-off attempt from the TMNT Adventures Archie Comics series. Like I said earlier, they were short-lived (a three-issue mini-series followed by an ongoing that was cancelled after only 9 issues), and were killed after a six-part back-up storyline in the main "TMNT" book- a SHOCKING move at the time. The Archie comics were kind of messed-up in general... Jaggy here is the son of a BLAZING hot jungle-girl MILF named "Juntarra" (who is South American, and looks pretty much like the whitest-looking people from that region), and the "Jaguar Spirit". She had Jagwar while on a massive spirit quest, but abandoned him after he turned twelve to continue her journey. She ended up captured by Death (?), and the Mutanimals had Jagwar's back as he fought to save her life. This was the opening portion of the Mutanimals series, and was interesting, but ultimately kind of faltered (that kind of Uncle Scrooge/Barksian Ducks" kind of story really hasn't sold well in the States in a LONG time), and the book didn't last long. Notably, Jagwar got a "Pin-Up" in one issue where he looked CRAZY vicious, way outside of the cutesy art designs they used for the actual comics.

-Jagwar was Stephen Murphy's creation intially- he wanted him to be a part of a spin-off toyline that was eventually shelved. The character reappears in IDW Comics as a female Jaguar Goddess- when the Turtles accidentally spied on a Pantheon "family reunion", Jagwar attempted to kill them and was fended off by Raphael.

-Jagwar is a PL 8, low-pointed animal-type hero, using many of my Jaguar build's powers, combined with an excellent melee fighter. He's more like a PL 7.5 on offense, PL 8 on defense, and is enough to challenge any individual Ninja Turtle in a pretty even fight, though I think the more versatile & Advantage-heavy brothers in green would eventually win.

Juntarra's origin story states that she's actually Spanish, the child of missionaries who attempted to convert the Mayoruna people who raised her. (They didn't want to be converted, and indicated this rather directly, but spared the innocent child that she was.)

-Dreadmon was kind of annoying in the issues I have. He never did much of note beyond running at super-speed, punching guys, and saying "Mon!" at the end of every sentence. Apparently he's a street rat (I don't buy that) thief who had been sent from his native South Africa because his father was an outspoken opponent of Apartheid and feared for his safety. Living on the streets, Dreadmon stole a magical talisman that turned him into a Jamaican Wolf-man.

-Shockingly, the character has popped up in IDW Comics, where he is from the Democratic Republic of Congo (though his father is Jamaican)- he was forced to become a child soldier, and after the war, became a homeless kid. He was offered money to be a test subject by the Null Group, and was transformed into a mutant jackal. When he realised that Null wanted him to become a soldier again, Dreadmon defected, ending up in New Jersey. He briefly allied with Man-Ray and a human girl named Sally, but chose to live life on his own after helping them out.

-Dreadmon's a PL 7.5 offensive, PL 8 defensive Speedster, but not of much merit. He's got some low-key Quicksilver-type Speed Feats, though.

Wingnut & Screwloose

Post by Jabroniville »

Wingnut, the clutzy, caped vampire bat, quietly hung out on his home planet Huanu. That is, until Krang destroyed it. Saved and sucked into a vortex before his planet exploded, Wingnut ended up on Earth, along with Screwloose, a levelheaded Huanu mosquito.

Furious and frantic that Krang blew up his planet, the crazed Wingnut's out to get even with Krang - or anyone else associated with the burbling brain. That makes him a perfect ally with the Turtle teens.

Despite Wingnut's bloodshot eyes, defective radar, stunted wings and oversensitive ears, he's determined to be a sewer-superhero. Even with constant training from our green teens, Wingnut's more likely to bump into a building than bust a baddie. Armed with mechanical turbo wings invented by Donatello, Wingnut flutters and putters to put the bite on the Foot Clan.

-Wingnut was a world-conqueror-type supervillain in the cartoon (a one-off who planned to turn humanity into mindless zombies and was foiled by the Turtles' friend Zach), but the version that appeared in the Archie Comics is a happy-go-lucky flying type. He avoided the rest of the team at first (he & Screwloose had their own partnership, and neither liked to talk about the past), but one issue dealt with his backstory. He & Screwloose (a talking mosquito that was a foot high and rode on Wingnut's back) were their planet's version of disabled people- being unable to fly on an alien homeworld full of airborne characters. The two pooled their allowances to buy Wingnut a pair of artificial wings, and they became the best of friends, only to watch as Krang's armies wiped out their planet, including Wingnut's parents. He joined the rest of the Mighty Mutanimals, but was killed with the rest of them.

-The existence of the character as a villain in the 1980s Cartoon annoyed the creators of the Archie series, and so they put their fut down over the intentions of using Man-Ray in a similar situation. A version of Wingnut & Screwloose appear in IDW Comics as background specimens in one story. In the 2012 Nick Toon, Wingnut is a fictional comic book superhero- an alien from the planet Dexion V who adopts Screwloose when he is orphaned- the two fight crime as obvious parodies of Batman & Robin. When April O'Neil's crystal brings a villain from the book to life, Michelangelo brings Wingnut & Screwloose into the real world to fight him as well. However, the pair grab the crystal and are mutated into monstrous forms and conspire to stay in the real world. However, after another fight with the Turtles, April absorbs the energies sustaining them and they accept their fate, their sanity returning.

-Wingnut is very Advantage-heavy, packing most of the Agility-based stuff, Favoured Environment, the best Initiative of his team, and some Equipment (it's easier to wreck than a Device) that allows him to fly and use a Wing Slash ability (he never actually DID THIS that I can see, but I can't figure out how he'd come close to the PLs of his buddies otherwise). He's PL 7 on offense, and PL 8 on defense, because he's the hardest member of his team to hit. Screwloose is tiny and not much of a power-player, but his small size makes him REALLY hard to hit, as well as really accurate (he's so small he passes through most people's defenses). He's much better than you'd expect a 25-lb. skeeter to be, that's for sure.

-Rocksteady & Bebop were initially not used in the 2012 Nick Toon- instead, Shredder's top henchmen were two human goons- Chris & Xever. However, both were very quickly turned into mutants themselves. Chris Bradford, voiced by eternal villain Clancy Brown, was a martial arts celebrity with a line of dojos, but was secretly a ninja trained by the Shredder- after facing the Turtles a few times (initially pretending to be friendly with Michelangelo), he came into contact with Mutagen and transformed into a dog-man called Dogpound. Despising this, he was even more angered when, a season later, he contacted MORE Mutagen and became a gigantic, wolflike skeletal creature now called Rahzar (after the movie villain). He spends much of his time bickering with Xever, but is a loyal henchman of Shredder's, sticking by him constantly.

-Bradford revels in the power of his Rahzar form, but again can't beat the Turtles. He allies with Rocksteady & Bebop in later seasons, but is killed in a massive group battle when he pins Leonardo down and Leatherhead tackles him, dragging him into the depths around Coney Island, where he drowns. He is resurrected and sides with the boss when he's possessed by a demon- Tiger Claw helps kill Rahzar here, knocking him into a portal along with the Shredder.

-Dogpound, and even the more powerful "Rahzar" form, were both pretty typical for the genre- High-End Jobbers. He was enough to challenge the Turtles for a short time, but could only handle one himself- the whole group would defeat him easily, as would a solitary Splinter. His assymetrical body and increased bulk cost him a lot of stealth as Dogpound, much to his chagrin- as a human, he was much stealthier and more acrobatic. As Rahzar, he was faster and stronger, pushing him to PL 9 status.

Bradford's human form design and his whole "MacDojo" approach makes him a parody of 80s martial arts in general, Chuck Norris in particular.

His in-universe cartoon is even clearly a Karate Kommandos parody.

Oh nice, lol.

PS THIS is how the Mighty Mutanimals were killed off in-story. Yes, they put this in a comic marketed towards CHILDREN:

Oh, I missed that. He was only a human for a short period of time I think. I didn't realize Chuck had a McDojo set-up, either.

This is a pretty good breakdown of the entire "Death Of The Mutanimals" bit. Needless to say, having taken a break from the TMNT comics for a bit, coming back in the second issue of the storyline (the one with the giant pink devil floating on the cover) to find that a lot of fun characters were dead was jarring for my eleven year old self.

...I don't think I ever learned why one of the Turtles was suddenly not sporting a headband any more.

The whole "Death of The Mutanimals" thing still just strikes me as so . . . stupid. The creator given excuse of "well, they weren't getting their own book so we killed them to make the characters have some impact" just rings hollow to me. It's exactly the kind of thing Christopher Priest has done several times. Power Man and Iron Fist ending? Meh, lets kill off Danny to make the end of the book matter and have some impact. My run on Spider-Man ending? Meh, lets kill Ned Leeds and create this whole issue with the Hobgoblin storyline. My run on Justice League Task Force ending? Meh, lets kill off Mystek, the character I created, so that other people can't play with my toys.

It just seems so wasteful and wrong-headed. "My character isn't getting the exposure I want, so rather than continue to tell stories with them, I'mma kill em off". I mean, sure, killing them off makes their deaths matter . . . in the short term. In the long term, they'll either stay dead and have almost no impact, or they'll get brought back. Why would anyone think that "telling fewer or less visible stories" is worse than "never telling any stories with them ever again"?

Having them as back ups allows you to build up the fanbase more, tell stories, promote them and organically build them back up to where they'd have their own series. Killing them off denies the possibility of future stories and popularity to give them a very brief moment of importance and a whole lot of EDGGGGGGGE.

-Xever joins Bradford as one of Shredder's top two agents in the first season of the 2012 Nick Toon- a slender Afro-Brazilian, he is a lethal crimeboss and doesn't get along with Bradford, but is mutated along with him. He transforms into a helpless fish-man soon called "Fishface", and becomes useless until Baxter Stockman builds him some legs, at which point he becomes a speedy adversary. But of course once Rocksteady & Bebop become a thing, he's rapidly de-emphasized and stops mattering. Eventually his gear is broken again, and he ultimately decides to go back to the simpler life of being a common crook, abandoning a resurrected, demon-possessed Shredder & Rahzar to their doom.

-Fishface got a huge does of "New Villain Stink" when he first mutated and gained his legs, knocking out Michelangelo with a single kick and poisoning Raphael with a venomous bite. But then of course he turns into a jobber, so he's only ever PL 8.

The analogy I usually use is Shel Silverstein's Prayer of the Selfish Child.

“Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
And if I die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my toys will break.
So none of the other kids can use 'em....
Amen.”

Total: Abilities: 76 / Skills: 52--26 / Advantages: 16 / Powers: 18 / Defenses: 15 (151)

-Tiger Claw was introduced very randomly, two years into the run of the 2012 Nick Toon. An assassin from Japan, he was mutated off-camera by the Kraang and just sorta shows up under the Shredder as his new #2 guy. He gets a large amount of "New Villain Stink" immediately, putting the Turtles on the defensive and they have to be bailed out by Splinter. He is sent into a portal and is thought dead, but turns up with an eyepatch and a newfound grudge with the Turtles. The other henchmen of Shredder's fear him, and he maintains a bit of an aura, but is quickly "just another guy" without many crazy feats- it's just established that he can beat up Fishface, Bebop & Rocksteady.

-Eventually, we get more backstory- his sister Alopex (a fox mutant originally from the IDW Comics) appears, and it turns out they were mutated by the Kraang DECADES ago, and were eventually rivals- she cut off his tail and disappeared. They fight once more, Alopex winning but choosing to spare his life- ungrateful, he attacks with his freeze gun, and so she slices off his right arm. In the final arc in the series, he discovers that Shredder has been killed by Leonardo, and makes an unholy ritual to summon a dragon to resurrect him & Rahzar. However, this turns out to be a mistake- the Dragon has possessed the villains and plans an apocalypse in New York, so Tiger Claw allies with the Turtles to stop them- he personally throws Rahzar into the netherworld, then teams up with the giood guys to push Kavaxas-Shredder in as well.

-Guys like Tiger Claw are a bit tricky- I have the Turtles at PL 8, Shredder's goons at PL 8, and Shredder himself at PL 11, so where's Tiger Claw? He could beat all four Turtles at once in his debut, but is pretty well an ordinary guy after that- probably enough to beat one Turtle but he's mostly just "a guy" and gets no more major wins that I can tell. PL 9-10, I guess.

Transistorized for terror in the Technodrome, this vindictive villain has one command permanently burned into his memory chips - destroy all Turtles! Shredder packed Chrome Dome with deadly diodes of destruction, making this robotic ruffian the ultimate shogun warrior! With his own brand of digital dexterity, Chrome Dome weilds weapons from his atomic arsenal. And when this metallic menace swings his servo sai and gigobyte goupillon, the Turtles must duck or die! Shredder's made this metallic marvel to be just like him - a master of martial mayhem, battle techniques and everlasting evil. He's one programmed punk who will never rest until he rusts.

Total: Abilities: 18 / Skills: 8--4 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 79 / Defenses: 11 (126)

-Chrome Dome is the omnipresent kind of bad guy: The Killer Robot. Created by Shredder to finish off those meddling mutants, he was damn near unstoppable- and unlike most TMNT enemies, he was MUCH larger than normal- about twice the height of a normal human being, and also vastly stronger. He was created to supervise the construction of a second Technodrome, but was defeated when the Turtles found the controller chip on his back and deactivated him. Chrome Dome reappears in Night of the Rogues, where he's been rebuilt and helps capture the four Turtles. He also holds off the entire rescue squad out to save them (including CASEY JONES, whose weapons just break against his body), and is only stopped when Splinter outsmarts him- he lures him onto a hydraulic press that flattens him.

-Chrome Dome oddly doesn't reappear throughout most of the franchise, despite being such an obvious idea- he is playable in one of the TMNT: Tournament Fighters video games but appears in none of the others! He doesn't reappear until the 2012 Nick Toon, where he is a prototype of a more advanced kind of Foot-Bot. He is controlled by Karai to hunt down April, as she was nursing a big grudge at that point- however, when it captures her, it refuses to kill her. It has instead been overridden by the Kraang, who need April for their own ends. It manages to hold off Karai AND the Turtles, but is finally defeated when Donatello removes the panel on its back and Chrome Dome loses control of its faculties and Michelangelo finally stabs it through the chest with a plasma sword.

-Chrome Dome is such a threat that he's one of very few TMNT foes that is *PL 11*. Only trickery and proper tactics can defeat him- even someone as awesome as Casey Jones can't even really hurt him.
