Star Sapphire- Hero's Girlfriend to Brainwashed Villainess:
-So Carol Ferris is one of those weird characters who alternates between "Hero's Girlfriend" and "Brainwashed Villainess". Originally based visually off of Elizabeth Taylor, she was the vice president of Ferris Aircraft, where Hal Jordan worked at his "Cool Guy Job" as a test pilot. When she took over the company from her father, she was quickly made the "Star Sapphire" by the Zamarons- the female offshoots of the Guardians of the Universe. They would frequently control her into fighting Hal Jordan, upon discovering his nature as a Green Lantern, causing a recurring story to develop- Carol becomes the Sapphire again, and Hal has to defeat her and return her to normal. Eventually, she is engaged to Jason Belmore and is wheelchair-bound, but I guess this all ends. When her father died, she refused to date Hal since he was now an employee, and her distaste for what her life had become manifested itself in the super-powered male "Predator" that split off from her. Hal defeats it, but it them merges with Carol, who turns evil and begins ruling Zamaron. Enraged when the Zamarons abandon her to mate with the Guardians during the Crisis, she murders Katma Tui and thus drives a wedge between Hal & John Stewart (Katma's husband), who wants to kill her for this.

-Later, it is revealed that the Predator is some parasite, but Carol is pregnant because the Predator raped the original Star Sapphire and implanted it within her. This is during the Extreme Justice series- she allows Neron to kill those two aspects of herself, and carry away their child. HOWEVER, Infinite Crisis wiped that story away, apparently- a new Star Sapphire was now the one who killed Katma, and the Predator is now the Love Entity.

Modern Carol:
-Following Hal's resurrection, Carol reappears in his life, having married a man named Gil. When she is briefly possessed by the Star Sapphire crystal again, she leaves when she realizes Hal has feelings for a fellow pilot named "Cowgirl"... but realizes she's still in love with Hal, and files for divorce. Aaaaaaaaand then she's transformed into one of MANY Star Sapphires, now finally forming a new Corps, as the Emotional Spectrum thing Geoff Johns was working on felt "pre-set" with things like them. She... kind of just gets added to the story as a random ally at this point- it's clear she loves Hal but there is too much going on for them to get together, and Johns wasn't really good at writing romance anyways, so it's not clear to me WHY these two belong together. The "Huffy Lady-Boss" and "Man's Man Who Wants To Be In Charge" is a great idea for a coupling, given how you can see Macho Hal squirm with a woman giving him orders, but it's a bit too old-timey for modern comics in a way, so we're left with a "Well, they BELONG together- just deal with it" notion. I dunno.

-In any case, Carol is almost never instrumental to any of these stories- it almost feels like the Star Sapphires were just "extras" who fit the idea Johns was going for (to be fair, they DID- it was almost brilliant how easily the Sapphires fit into his "Emotional Spectrum" idea). She has a brief bout of feelings for Kyle Rayner when he's the White Lantern, but ultimately gets back together with Hal.

I think the thing that sums up the corps is this

Love is what you fight for
Will is how you fight
Hope is why you keep fighting

Fear Rage and Greed are what you fight against and sometimes on rare occasions with

Star Sapphire (Dela Pharon)

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

STAR SAPPHIRE III (Dela Pharon)
Created by:
xxxx
First Appearance: Green Lantern #41 (Dec. 1965)
Role: Wannabe Replacement

-Dela Pharon debuted a few years after Star Sapphire's debut- Carol Ferris is injured flying an aircraft and is lured by the Star Sapphire gem again, but is confronted by an alien queen ALSO decked out as a Star Sapphire! Hal Jordan comes across the two fighting, and the Zamarons appear to explain that this is a woman from the planet Xanador. It turns out that some Zamarons were trying to crown Pharon the new Sapphire, but others dissented- angry, Pharon flew to Earth to beat up Carol. Carol manages to defeat by Pharon AND Hal, taking him to Zamaron to force him to marry her. However, Hal discovers before the wedding that "Carol" is actually Pharon in disguise! Carol has been living Pharon's life on Xanador, and so Hal sets things right- Carol naturally remembers none of what transpired.

-Pharon does not appear again in that continuity, but shows up in the Geoff Johns era, explained as having killed her husband and wrapped their planet in crystal so they could be together forever. She is said to be recruited into the newly formed Star Sapphire Corps, but Johns never gets around to showing this.

Star Sapphire (Remoni-Notra)

STAR SAPPHIRE IV (Remoni-Notra, aka Deborah Camille Darnell)
Created by:
Gerry Conway & Pablo Marcos
First Appearance: Amazing World of DC Comics #11 (March 1976)
Role: Wannabe Replacement, Love Rival (to Carol), Disposable "Extra" Character (eventually)

-Remoni-Notra of Pandina was chosen by the Zamarons to be their new queen after Carol Ferris refused the job. She was given one of five Star Sapphire gems, and came to Earth to find another, joining the Secret Society of Super-Villains in the meantime, taking a human disguise as a stewardess at Ferris Aircraft. She often dated Captain Comet in this guise, but eventually a writer shift or something happened and she was forgotten about. Turns out she was mind-wiped and put in a coma- it's suggested this was done at the request of Hal Jordan to protect Carol Ferris (was this during Identity Crisis?). She was revived by the Secret Society and fought the Justice League.

-In the Johns Green Lantern run, she is rebooted completely. She is a human flight attendant who dated Hal Jordan after he broke up with Carol, and was chosen as new Star Sapphire because the gem always chose Hal's girlfriends. She joins a bunch of magic-users at Stonehenge during Infinite Crisis (... why?) and is singled out by The Spectre, who is like "LOL you suck" and shatters her gem, killing her. This reads suspiciously like Geoff Johns wiping the slate clean of characters he doesn't intend to use. I mean, it's not like she overcomplicated the story- if anything, she ADDED to the notion of the Star Sapphire Corps, but maybe Johns hadn't even thought of that at the time and just wanted this weird Carol Rival gone.

So, my reading is that the people recruited for the Star Sapphire Corps are those driven by loves that will never work out. Several of those we named have dead lovers. The Zamarons and the Guardians are, well, the Zamarons and the Guardians. And Hal is about as emotionally accessible as a rock. So it seems to me that the subtext of Carol becoming a Star Sapphire, and later queen of the Star Sapphires, is that she and Hal are doomed because Hal isn't really capable of love.

The Lantern campaign I ran was actually the Star Sapphire Corps (throwing out the dumb idea that only women could be Star Sapphires). We did a lot with the idea that "love" means more than just eros. Love of siblings, parents, children, and friends... now add the tragedy that it's lost or doomed for every member of the Corps. More angst than Krakoa.

The writeup of Carol is missing a couple of fairly common Star Sapphire power stunts. They were shown to be able to teleport over interstellar distances to protect a "great love", or from one lover to another, following the connection between the two; they could also use the bonds between two hearts to share life force between lovers, saving one who is about to die. (The concept of "great loves," along the lines of Hawkwoman and Hawkman, seems to be distinct from ordinary love, and protecting them seems to be the central mission of the Star Sapphires the way law & order are for the Green Lanterns.)

Their most common attack was encasing targets in crystal (rather than the typical Lantern blast); the crystal prisons would eventually suffuse the victim with the power of love and, if not reform them, at least change their obsession. Not that Karol didn't do most of the common force construct tricks, but based on what we saw of the other Sapphires I wonder how much of that was just copying Hal. Love's light seems to, by default, create permanent crystal rather than ephemeral light.

Star Sapphire (Cowgirl)

Post by Jabroniville »

STAR SAPPHIRE V (Jillian "Cowgirl" Pearlman)
Created by:
Geoff Johns & Carlos Pacheco
First Appearance: Green Lantern #1 (May 2005)
Role: New Love Interest

-Cowgirl was hilarious- this "Exciticing New Love Interest" for Hal Jordan in the new Green Lantern series once the hero is resurrected, only to be COMPLETELY IGNORED in literally every book I've read since then, because Johns wanted Carol after all. Like, Cowgirl is in NONE of the "Corps War" books I own.

-Cowgirl debuts as a fellow test pilot at Ferris Aircraft, and is quickly attracted to Hal. During the "Lost Year" following Infinite Crisis, it's discovered she, Hal & another pilot were shot down over enemy territory- Hal was tortured but managed to bring them all to safety (naturally, he didn't wear his GL ring, as he apparently dislikes doing so during flights). The Star Sapphire gem, upon realizing that Hal had feelings for Cowgirl, possessed her and caused a fight with Hal- Hal cleverly said he loved a Zamaron woman instead, causing the gem to attach to her, causing a violent reaction- Hal and the others escaped during the chaos. After that, she seems to vanish from the stories.

Yeah, that might make sense. I barely remember her Corps showing up, so there's a lot I probably missed. A lotta "recently dead" people, for sure.
The writeup of Carol is missing a couple of fairly common Star Sapphire power stunts. Consarnit- that's not listed on the GL Fandom site, nor Wikipedia. How often did they teleport?

I did stick in the latter power in the array, I think:
Dynamic AE: Healing 12 (Extras: Resurrection) (Flaws: Limited to When True Loves are Present, Distracting) (12)
Their most common attack was encasing targets in crystal (rather than the typical Lantern blast); the crystal prisons would eventually suffuse the victim with the power of love and, if not reform them, at least change their obsession. Did they do that in fights? I recall that happening on Zamaron with their prisoners, but nothing beyond the regular Snares in fights. But it's been like eight years- I dunno anymore. I think that happened soooooooo slowly (like, Kryb was there for weeks and it didn't take yet, right?) I wasn't sure if it should be in there.

But all these Corps are pretty tricky and weird.

-- (150 points)

-The Star Sapphires have long been enemies of Hal Jordan, as it was initially a gem that overtook his girlfriend Carol Ferris into frequently dressing up as a supervillain. Once this whole "Emotional Spectrum" of Create Object-based guys came about, it seemed like a no-brainer to add these guys to the mix. A "Violet" Corps (despite usually being pink in the comics), it's made up of 100% women for some reason (the Zamarons, female offshoots of the Guardians who are altogether pretty bitchy, are apparently giant sexists), and gathers them from those who've lost great love. Most of them are women whose husbands/lovers were killed for some reason.

-Star Sapphires have a few powers available that most other Corpsmen don't- it's the typical GL-type stuff (using Love instead of Willpower as a Will-Save), but also carries Emotion Control, Dazzle Visuals & Healing as Alt-Effects. The Healing thing is a VERY recent ass-pull, bringing Kyle Rayner back to life using Soranik Natu's love for him. Statting up a fairly recent Corps can be tough, because they're VERY prone to these sudden "I have a NEW power!" outbursts, but there's two ranks left on this Device to be filled- we'll see.

-PS I love that they have these weird "masks" that make little circles around their eyes. Like... "putting pretty women is masks" is just such an impossibility in comics anymore than it's either domino masks or these pretend non-masks that leave the entire face still exposed, lol.

-The ring is tricky, in that Star Sapphires never seem as powerful as people using red, green, or yellow rings, but that could be because they were a "side thing" with fewer named characters. I decided to give them a flaw that holds back their maximum power unless the most "love" is present- things like having one's true love nearby, or just more Star Sapphires (as they're said to boost each other's powers by proximity). The whole "powered by love" thing is trickier than just Willpower, as I kinda had to make it just another Will Save (cuz like... how do you assess that in M&M terms?).

-Star Sapphires appear only barely- none aside from Carol & Fatality (pre-existing characters) are even given any role in the story at all. One is a blue lady named Miss Bloss and another is an alien woman whose husband was killed by Mongul- the Ring gave her a new lease on life.

The Zamarons

THE ZAMARONS
Created by:
John Broome & Gil Kane
First Appearance: Green Lantern #16 (Oct. 1962)
Role: Female Guardians, Weirdo Mind-Controllers

-Appearing as shapely, weird-headed blue chicks, the Zamarons are female offshoots of the Guardians of the Universe, and have settled on the planet Zamaron. So where the Guardians supressed emotion, the Zamarons embraced it, particularly love. They forged a martial culture, unlike the Guardians' focus on spirit, and started placing their psionic energies in violet crystals- these gave birth to the Star Sapphires- leaders chosen due to fitting certain physical characteristics the mortal denizens of Zamaron found ideal- Carol Ferris was the first modern one. The Zamarons then disappeared into another dimension to mate with the Guardians, but this was largely ignored after a point when the Guardians were killed by an insane Hal Jordan, then later reborn in male & female configurations.

-The Zamarons reappeared in modern times with the "Corps War"- naturally, their focus on Love and the violet crystals fit the ideal Geoff Johns was going for, and so the "Star Sapphire Corps" became a thing, using Violet Love energy to make constructs. There was something very "off" about the Zamarons, though- their love powers had an element of brainwashing to them, and they captured evil females and forcibly tried to get them to join the Star Sapphires via mind control (thankfully Kryb broke free before we got to see her in the mega-cleavage costume- you're welcome for that image, by the way). Queen Aga'po, their leader, was very "Stepford Wife" friendly, too, but she ultimately sacrificed herself in order to refuel their Central Power Battery (which was once fueled by the love for Hawkman & Hawkgirl's original forms- Khufu & Chayara). The Zamarons, however, ultimately ally with the various Corps against the mad Guardians.

Jabroniville wrote: Fri Jul 02, 2021 5:38 am yeah, the Brubaker/Fraction Iron Fist tale is proof positive that it can work, but only because it did nothing but add. The cast was exponentially increased and his world got so much bigger, and stuff that didn't work (Danny's half-sister and the race of evil plants) was ignored. Those retcons worked because while it was weird that nobody had ever talked about this before (there were OTHER Iron Fists? Also there are six other Immortal Weapons?), it didn't exactly refashion everything else Danny had ever done.

Stuff like "There were Ancient Avengers" doesn't bother me so much because older characters can do whatever, and technically that's just adding stuff. But making Thor's mom suddenly be the Phoenix is weird because it ties in X-Men stuff to Avengers stuff and... well, is completely needless. Not that Gaea being Thor's mother was ever that important either (and I think THAT was a retcon, too, as in mythos it's usually Frigga).

I dunno, every Retcon these days just makes me roll my eyes- the one I harp on the most is the one that's by far the dumbest- "Everything you know is WRONG!" I've harped on that for ages, and it's always the same old story- "I wanna mess with an old beloved tale and put my STAMP on it!", usually by cocking up another character or making someone more "correct" in the story. Retconning origins has flat-out got to stop at this point, because it's so unnecessary.

The "Soft Reboot" of Secret Wars/Infinity was a chance to do some of that stuff in a metatextual way, but now it's getting even sillier because it's all in "revealed secrets" and the story's always the same- "Someone is hiding something".
On the subject of Thor's parentage, the fact that his mother was actually Gaia/Jord was established way back in Thor #301 (1980), but it never really amounted to anything until Empyre, when Thor actually channeled her powers through Mjolnir to lay waste to the Cotati (and almost killed himself in the process).
Also, Thor pretty consistently identified Frigga as his actual mother, without much regard for his actual bloodties.
Actually, my mother's name was Mamie. ;)

Star Sapphire (Prixiam)

STAR SAPPHIRE VI (Prixiam Nol-Anj)
Created by:
Robert Vendetti & Billy Tan
First Appearance: Green Lantern #21 (Aug. 2013)
Role: Legacy Villain

-A white-skinned, blue-haired villain, this new Star Sapphire was a prisoner of the Oan Sciencells created in the post-Johns era of GL. A racketeer & assassin with a laundry list of crimes, she is skilled enough at manipulation and seduction to have done so with many GLs. She convinces one that she is in love with him, and receives a Star Sapphire Ring when one of its members is killed during Larfleeze's attack on Oa- she uses this to convince the GL that this is proof she loves him... and then executes him when he lets her out of her cell. She arrives at her desolate homeworld, meeting her beloved Clan- apparently her love for this group of brigands is so strong that the Ring perceived it as justification to join the Star Sapphires. She I guess becomes a recurring villain in the new GL book because of this.

Power Loss (Love)- Star Sapphire Rings depend upon the power of love of their wielder. If one fails a Will Save with regards to love (in a sense, "proving" their love to someone, preferably nearby), they will drop Constructs and Force Fields.
Power Loss (Out of Energy)- Power Rings must be recharged via their Lanterns occasionally, and will run out of power after extended use.
Power Loss (High Levels of Power)- Star Sapphires must pass Will Saves to bring their power effects any higher than their natural Will Save +2. This includes Blasts, Move Object & Force Fields.
Responsibility (The Star Sapphires)
Enemy/Relationship (John Stewart)- Fatality despised John for years due to his responsibility for the destruction of Xanshi, but later came to love him when the Zamarons brainwashed her. Afterwards, she hated him again.
Enemy (Green Lanterns)- Fatality carries tremendous resentment towards the GLC for their failure in preventing the destruction of her homeworld, Xanshi.

Total: Abilities: 62 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 17 / Powers: 125 / Defenses: 14 (245)

-Fatality (who would have guessed that a couple years after Mortal Kombat changed gaming forever that a character named "Fatality" would debut?) came about due to the aftermath of Xanshi's destruction from John Stewart's negligence. Having been trained by the Warlords of Okaara, she was a royal family member who sought vengeance for Xanshi's destruction. Attempting to hunt all Green Lanterns, she found that Kyle Rayner was the sole remaining one. She attempted to kill him more than once, becoming a recurring foe, but was thought killed, with only her left arm remaining. She returned, sans arm, and succeeds in crippling John (whom she'd discovered- thanks to Kyle- was actually responsible for Xanshi's destruction), then later uses a Qwardian yellow power ring, but it explodes while on her hand, taking her other arm. Now with two prosthetics, she returns during the Sinestro Corps War as a one-off member of that group, but is captured by the Zamarons and brainwashed into joining their love-oriented Star Sapphires, now forgiving John (and kissing him).

-Fatality thus shows up in a few other stories as the only Star Sapphire of note that wasn't Carol Ferris- she was part of the New Guardians book (featuring a band of different ring-bearers allied with Kyle Rayner), and pursued a relationship with John. Eventually, she was abducted by Durlans and her ring was destroyed- now hateful once more, she becomes an enemy of John's again.

-Fatality in her initial form was a space huntress with great endurance- she used this as a main tactic against Green Lanterns- not to defeat them, but to wear them out until they lose their 24-hour charge on their Rings. She was previously a gear-user with a variety of blades & space guns, as well as explosives. But she always lost to a rookie Kyle Rayner, so she likely wasn't that powerful.

I don't mind the idea of the Star Sapphires having their own team/squad/corps. You'd just think the costume designers would know the difference between "love," "lust," and "outright fetishistic perversion."
