Complications

Personality - Akira has the classic Hiroshi Miyauchi swagger and suaveness down to a science.

Power Loss (Transformation) - The Gorenger Suits require a calm, focused mind. Heavy emotions stop the necessary electrical charge from going through.

Responsibility (Blue Senshi) - As the first in the long line of Sentai Blues, Aorenger feels an intrinsic duty to defend the Earth and mentor the next generation of heroes.

Background: Akira Shinmei, the Aorenger. Another of the five survivors of the Black Cross Army's massacre of EAGLE's Japan Bases, he was recruited by EAGLE's Japan Leader, Commander Edogawa, into the Gorengers, Earth's best chance against the enhanced forces of the Black Cross Army. As second-in-command to the Gorengers, Akira helped save the world, beginning the legacy of the Super Sentai, defending Earth for nearly half a century, engaging in the Great Legend War against the Zangyack Empire, and battling against and alongside the Sentai's brothers-in-arms, the Kamen Riders.

Notes: Aorenger is a pretty solid PL 10, with a focus on Ranged Skill and Piloting. With a somewhat weak, but chock-full of modifiers Blast Effect in Blue Archery, and Area Coverage with the Cherry Missile, he can provide great cover for his team in combat. He's fairly good shakes in melee as well, with just under elite-tier Unarmed, and some solid team advantages, owning up to his second-in-command status.

This thread is a pleasant surprise. I would agree on the generally high PL for these characters. Underneath all of the camp of Tokusatsu lie some seriously powerful abilities capable of leveling buildings or surviving attacks of a similar scale. The original Gorenger squad was created to fight back against an alien army that had slaughtered most of Earth's conventional militaries in open battle; and while each show seems to take place in its own universe, none of the successive Ranger squads seemed much weaker than that. Quite a few have abilities that are in my opinion near Cosmic-scale in power. Your average Kamen Rider often fights by himself or with a handful of allies against world-ending threats similar to what the Rangers take on, so PL 14 is not out of the question for those guys. Kamen Rider Amazon was arguably one of the weaker heroes from the early years, and he was a Wolverine-level melee fighter who could tear apart super strong monsters with his bare hands.

On the subject of requests, would you be interesting in writing up Warrior of Love Rainbowman and possibly the other Kōhan Kawauchi shows as well? Here in the West, those characters are practically unknown, but Kawauchi created the Tokusatsu genre and his character inspired many others who came after them. Rainbowman (arguably the most popular) was a major influence on the creation of the Mega Man video game franchise and just a really nifty (if over the top) superhero in general.

Loving the old school Sentai builds. I do agree that, on average, the average Sentai hero isn't on par with the average Rider, and individual Riders can pack the power of entire Sentai teams. Though this is balanced out with the Sentai teams having access to teamwork and giant robots.

The giant robots part is actually interesting, because initially, the Sentai teams didn't have multi-colored mecha that would form into a giant robot. Ironically, the story I've heard is that it was Marvel Comics and Spider-Man that would lead to the Sentai Teams getting one of their more iconic aspects. When Marvel licensed Spider-Man to Toei, the Japanese team naturally Japaned the heck out of Spider-Man, making him the alien prince of some empire, complete with his own giant robot. The giant robot proved so popular that Toei decided to add that aspect to the Sentai franchise, where the concept worked naturally. These days, the giant robots are considered a pretty integral part of the Sentai franchise.

I do kind of feel bad for the classic Akarenger costume. It's clear what they wanted was a mirror-polish visor that the actor could see through and would have a distinctive blue color to it, but they couldn't quite figure out how to make it work. So instead we get what is clearly supposed to be a blue visor made entirely out of plastic with a lot of little holes punched in it to let the suit actors see anything. But much like any zippers we can spot on said costumes, those are things we're just supposed to pretend we don't see.

You know, it strikes me as kind of ironic how often Spider-Man, famous for his fairly unusual and iconic method of moving around the city, just *keeps* getting way more generic forms of transport (by the cliches of fiction, at least), like super-powered cars or giant robots, only to never use them (for the obvious reason) and then having all sorts of other characters benefit from them.

Part of the reason, at least with live action, was that the technology to really sell web-swinging as even plausible didn't exist until the late 90s/early 2000s. It was just a lot easier to pull off in animation, whereas we'd had solid live-action flying effects since the very first superhero on film: The Adventures of Captain Marvel.

Though giving Spider-Man a giant robot is one of the most Japanese things ever.

Quirk (Puzzles/Riddles) - Daita is quite the capable mechanic and mathematician, but absolutely SUCKS at puzzles and riddles. This is a constant issue for him.

Notes: Kirenger is another solid PL 10, with a focus on Strength, Resilience, and Mechanical Skill. With higher base Strength & Stamina than the rest of his team, along with some Strength-Boosting Features and Advantages like Ultimate Effort & Withstand Damage, he can fairly easily overpower and outlast his teammates. While his primary weapon isn't all that much, he does come with the capable YTC utility device, allowing him to deactivate Electronics and even fire off a Subtle Blast. Asides from his combat capabilities, he's quite the capable mechanics, boasting +13 Science and Technology, and even solid Piloting skills (though not quite on Aorenger's level). However, he does have a few downsides, notably his Awareness-based skills and general Ranged Capability. That and his Quirk Complication leave him woefully lacking in terms of solving any puzzles they may come across. Lucky for him, he can punch his way through most of these problems.

Complications

Personality - Peggy is a somewhat stereotypical girly-girl, though that personality belies her great intellect and technical know-how.

Power Loss (Transformation) - The Gorenger Suits require a calm, focused mind. Heavy emotions stop the necessary electrical charge from going through.

Responsibility (Pink Senshi/Female Senshi) - As the first in the long line of Sentai Pinks and Female Senshi, Momorenger has an intrinsic duty to defend the Earth and mentor the next generation of heroes.

Background: Peggy Matsuyama, the Momorenger. One of the five survivors of the Black Cross Army's massacre of EAGLE's Japan Bases, she was recruited by EAGLE's Japan Leader, Commander Edogawa, into the Gorengers, Earth's best chance against the enhanced forces of the Black Cross Army. As the Gorengers' best spy, disguise master, and explosives expert, Peggy helped save the world, beginning the legacy of the Super Sentai, defending Earth for nearly half a century, engaging in the Great Legend War against the Zangyack Empire, and battling against and alongside the Sentai's brothers-in-arms, the Kamen Riders.

Notes: This rebuild of Momorenger sets her up as a PL 9.5/10; a quite solid skillmonkey, with good combat skill, a variety of techniques (explosives, deflection, blinding effects, etc), the legendary "Disguise Mastery", and great knowledge in Chemical Sciences, specifically explosives, and weapon designing (she is the creator of the Gorenger Storm/Hurricane, and, in a pinch, edits their effects on the fly).

These guys have way more weapons than I was expecting. I’m used to Power Rangers having like one weapon each and maybe a blaster. Did these guys have Mechs back in the day?

Nope. They didn't get giant robots until the 4th season of the series in 1980 with Denshi Sentai Denziman. Like I said a little higher up, the Super Sentai brand didn't get giant transforming robots until the Japanese Spider-Man series popularized the idea in live action.
