INTELLIGENCE 0 AWARENESS 0 PRESENCE 0

Skills:
Acrobatics 2 (+7)
Athletics 3 (+10)
Deception 3 (+4)
Intimidation 4 (+4)
Perception 6 (+6)

Advantages:
Favored Environment (Underwater), Improved Critical (Unarmed), Power Attack, Ranged Attack 5

Powers:
"Life Model Decoy"
Immunity 30 (Fortitude Effects) [30]
Protection 7 [7]

Swimming 6 (30 mph) [6]
"Prophetic Dreams" Senses 4 (Precognition) (Flaws: Limited to When Asleep) [2]
"Water Mist" Concealment 2 (Visuals) (Extras: Attack, Area- 30ft. Cloud +2) [10]

Offense:
Unarmed +7 (+7 Damage, DC 22)

Defenses:
Dodge +7 (DC 17), Parry +7 (DC 17), Toughness +7, Fortitude --, Will +2

Complications:
Motivation (Power)- The LMD Zodiacs are goons, plain and simple.
Vulnerable (Magnetic Attacks)- As LMDs, the Zodiac are made of metal, and are prone to magnetic assault.
Weakness (Outside Their Dimension)- The LMDs will shut down without access to Zodiacal Energy from our dimension- inter-dimensional travel will shut most of them down.
Responsibility (Zodiac Nature)- The LMD Zodiacs were extremely focused onto their particular sign's habits and nature. This made Pisces very cowardly (though I don't see that in the stereotypes).

Total: Abilities: 28 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 55 / Defenses: 4 (104)

-Pisces' third LMD version was more interesting than all the others, in that they eventually (after the first two were killed) went for a Lemurian-looking woman with big frills around her limbs.

-She's still a PL 7 fighter, but like Pisces I, she gets better underwater. Unfortunately for this squad, Pisces never gets to FIGHT underwater, and her only real appearance in comics shows her panicking and fleeing combat the second Sagittarius was destroyed by Hawkeye. She claimed to have prophetic dreams, explaining that she'd dreamt of Sagittarius dying shortly before he actually did so.

-Pisces V is basically Hydro-Man Lite, taking some of his tricks (Drowning, Insubstantial, Immunities) and scaling them down to a PL 7.5 level. She's not super-great, but is one of the better members of her team by a ways, since she has very unique powers, and is relatively hard to hurt.

greycrusader wrote: Fri Jul 23, 2021 3:54 am It seems the better-designed original Zodiac members are those that debuted solo, outside the main Avengers storyline: Aries, Aquarius, Gemini, and Scorpio, with the exception perhaps being Libra. Though Scorpio has since been replaced, resurrected, retconned, and re-retconned so much the character is now a complete mess.

I think one way to make them work in the modern era would be to look at the inspirations behind the names-Capricorn as perhaps a chimeric shape-shifter (perhaps even a descendant of Greek Gods) or an horned Atlantean mutant, Virago as an immortal living statue (invoking the story of Galatea) or having solar-based powers (the myth figure was "Star-Virago"), and so on. Or invoke characteristics associated with the signs rather than taking them literally-have Leo be a master tactician/leader ("king") and hand to hand fighter, armed with vibranium weapons looted from Wakanda.
Have 'Leo' claim to be 'the chief in exile' of a 'banned Lion clan' from Wakanda with some vibranium weapons and Black Panther like abilities, only for T'Challa to say, 'WTF? We never *had* a 'Lion clan...'" and it later come out that he's either A) completely mental and it's all made up (but where did the vibranium come from?) or B) he's from an alternate universe, where there *was* a Lion clan, and his Wakanda was destroyed by a failed attempt to overthrow it and reclaim his clan's position, only to leave his Wakanda vulnerable to it's enemies and be ravaged by invaders out to pillage it's vibranium reserves instead.
Actually there is a Lion Cult in Black Panther's backstory. They worshiped Hastor-Sekhmet, the sibling of the Panther God/Bast. The best known story involving them is Avengers #s 112 and 114, where the cult empowered an outsider with Sekhmet's power so he could attack BP as the Lion God. http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/liongod.htm
Always ask before you use someone's Original Character.
Never ever use them without permission. Only Villains do that.

Stereotypes:
Know-It-All, Judgmental, Narcissistic, Idealistic, Meticulous

-Libra is one of the more difficult Zodiac symbols to represent- after all, it’s just “scales”. The motion of balance gave us an Asian mysticism-themed character, but the otherxx was have all been a wash.

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 56--28 / Advantages: 17 / Powers: 29 / Defenses: 13 (153)

-Libra has been a weird one- a character who was just a lame backgrounder for the Zodiac, being ANOTHER martial artist guy (but with a "Blind Master" gimmick), but then got brought back a bit later with a huge backstory, revealing him to be the father of Steve Englehart's beloved MANTIS. It turns out that Libra had been a Vietnam war veteran- a mercenary working for the French army- who'd fallen in love with a Vietnamese woman and had a daughter- this was a pretty common storytelling trope even THEN (the "tragic mullato" archetype being older than even that), but was pretty new for comic book superheroes. But the woman's evil brother (literally named General Khruul) hunted them down and torched their home- Gustav was left widowed and blinded, fleeing into the jungle, where he and his daughter were taken in by the Priests of Pama (themselves descended from Kree who'd ended up on Earth and sought peace and enlightenment). Gustav was trained to "see" without eyes, and his daughter was trained by the Priests- Gustav wasn't allowed to see or talk to her, because he was a soldier.

-So Gustav was given martial arts skills and "Blindsight" and such, but grew out of love with his daughter, since he never saw her. All that remained was his old desire for money and power, so he'd joined the Zodiac Cartel and become a crimeboss. He was a minor member of the team, but Englehart gave him the aforementioned depth during his run- Libra sat out a Cartel coup to "serve the balance" and then revealed he'd saved the Avengers from Taurus's trap because Mantis was his DAUGHTER! His memories flooding back, he revealed everything to the assembled heroes- Mantis tried to deny it, but the Swordsman, currying favor with his beloved, ran to Vietnam to kill General Khruul. He was instead captured and tortured into revealing the existence of the Priests, and they were slaughtered before the Avengers arrived and saved Swordsman. Libra appears only a few more times in the "Celestial Madonna" story, using his abilities to help summon the Cotati to Earth and see his daughter along, but he reappears as a generic Zodiac agent in a later Iron Man story, and Englehart himself has him seemingly die when the LMD Zodiac attacks the Cartel.

-Libra thus sits out on 15+ years of comics until Kurt Busiek's Magnum Avengers Opus, Avengers Forever, in which he was your standard vague character with vague motivations, guiding the heroes on their journey but actually serving the mysterious Evil Time Entities and Immortus, before bailing on them when Hawkeye proves to be too aggressive and tries to fight him. He professes again to always serve "the balance" and not any one side, merely guiding people along (unleashing the Destiny Force within Rick Jones to summon the Avengers that were the main characters of that story) ... but then he has a great moment at the end where he's like "The HECK with it!" and just started fighting on behalf of the Avengers to save the human race, because the "balance" was getting out of whack again. It was a fun bit and a good use of a forgotten side character, but amazingly, NO LATER WRITER HAS EVER USED HIM- this 2000 story, a seminal Avengers tale, is the last time he's appeared in a comic book for real.

-Libra's part-martial artist, part guide character, with an ESP-like sense that covers a fair bit of range (4 miles), but only within the Place Between Places. He has a strange Blindsight-like power (works sorta like Daredevil's Radar Sense except it's called "Spacial Sense"), allowing him Accurate Radius Sight, even though he's blind. Despite his points-cost, he's not exactly a lethal combatant- he's a weak PL 8.5 Defensive guy, and only PL 8 on offense. It was enough to temporarily hold his own against Hawkeye... That still makes him one of the BEST guys on the original Zodiac Cartel, so he's virtually their Superman.

-The LMD Libra was more of an NPC who didn't get involved- his Intangibility meant that he couldn't really fight, and so he advised the other members of the team. He actually had quite a bit of characterization in the Defenders issues in which he was featured, merely advising his team, but then abandoning them to the police when the Defenders reassembled after a crime spree.

-Libra was "rebuilt" by Scorpio using the Zodiac Key, along with a couple other LMD Zodiac members, in Steve Englehart's last use of the team. Why, I dunno- maybe he just wanted them to be different for his story? In this case, Libra was now a female. She was never observed using Intangibility, and was deactivated with the rest of them- a serious backgrounder, there.

LIBRA IV (Real Name Unknown)
Created By:
Terry Kavanagh, Mark Waid, Tom Raney & others
First Appearance: Captain America #449 (March 1996)
Role: Mysterious Leader
Group Affiliations: The "First Sign" Zodiac

-The "First Sign" Zodiac was a weird group that popped up in the mid-1990s Avengers books and those of their individual members. Led by a mysterious "Libra", they erected a shield around Manhattan that kept away all outside energy, which was intended to "remove the stars' control over our destinies" and allow them to forge their own- they sought to rule the world, starting with Manhattan as their base. Captain America summoned Thor & young Iron Man (yes, this was during THAT era), and eventually all the Avengers showed up. Libra defeated the assembled heroes, but Giant-Man broke the energy transformer that powered the shield. Libra escaped into the night, commanding his followers to blow themselves up with suicide bombs. This being the most unpopular era in Avengers history, this story has never been referenced again, and may even be out of continuity following Heroes Reborn.

-This Libra was said to be a "normal man", but struck a charging Quicksilver and knocked over an exhausted Thor. None of the rest of his team is named- they're just called "Zodiacs".

It didn't help that just a few months later we got Onslaught and Heroes Reborn taking the series in a completely different direction.

-Aries was probably the third-most important member of the Zodiac Cartel, taking over the team in Scorpio's absense, and being a crime boss of some talent in his own right. Even so, he was killed in his second appearance, trying to take over New York with some Cosmic Weapon thingie that put a force field around Manhattan- Thor was forced to bring down his ship (and the generator that was about to constrict the field around Manhattan, killing everyone there) with a lightning bolt, killing the villain as it crashed. He's one of the cooler looking Zodiac members too, which is kind of funny since he's pretty much wearing a big goat head as part of his costume.

-Aries is a low-end PL 8 (PL 7.5 mostly), but really, none of these guys are remotely powerhouses, and the only reason they can challenge the Avengers is with sheer numbers; since there are TWELVE of them, even minor powers are handy in a fight, as they're up 2-to-1 on just about everybody. He's basically a big strong guy with some sharp horns on his head.
