In Freedom City, the Microverse became the Infraverse, with character mentioned in Rogue's Gallery involving Whoop-Ant winding up there due to an ASTRO labs experiment.
The descendants of those warriors, King Rylon and Queen Variste had a daughter, Elzaya, who spent most of her time enjoying the opportunities of her station rather than undertake the responsibilities appointed to her. During one of her frequent rides in the countryside, she discovered the unconscious body of a stranger: the Earth-Prime hero known as Whoop-Ant, who had been thrown into the Infraverse by an ASTRO labs experiment gone awry.

Whoop-Ant recovered and the pair became friends, quizzing each other about their respective homes. Elzaya’s Uncle Bylar, the Konteel throneworld’s head councillor, recognised that this visitor may hold information that could aid the Empire. Bylar petitioned the king to allow the genegineers to study Whoop-Ant more thoroughly.

The king approved, and over the next few days Bylar’s scientists attempted to learn all they could from their visitor. Whoop-Ant tolerated this, mostly because it meant he was allowed to spend every evening with Elzaya. The two of them would dine together and talk until late at night. On the fifth such night, the pair were interrupted by Navagatrix, Whoop-Ant’s team mate, using her dimension-travelling powers to appear and offer to take him home. Although the pair were clearly in love, they knew they were from different worlds and it was only right that he return to his. They kissed once, then Navagatrix took Whoop-Ant home.

While the next few weeks proved to be difficult for Whoop-Ant as he believed he may never see Elzaya again, they were much more devastating for her. Days after Whoop-Ant left, the organitech in the stronghold began dying. Soon after that, the contagion spread to the citizens, to the king and the queen, and to Elzaya. She lay in a coma for weeks, but managed to fight off the infection only to discover that her parents had died and she was the new queen of the Seventeen Worlds. Bylar had also survived. He informed her that 35% of the population and almost all of the organitech had died. The genegineers were able to trace the cause to Whoop-Ant. Elzaya couldn’t believe someone so dear to her could be the cause, but her Uncle Bylar advised her that the people needed someone to blame and that if action were not taken quickly she may be seen as weak, which would put the entire Empire Elzaya’s shoulders. under threat.

With a heavy heart, she had Bylar put the Empire on a path to war with Earth-Prime. The genegineers were able to create a series of gates that mimicked the energies that brought Whoop-Ant from Earth Prime and created new batches of organitech that were immune to whatever biological agents Whoop-Ant and his Earth-Prime allies had released on their world. Within a few years, the entire Empire was transformed from a relatively peaceful society to one driven by revenge and ready to strike against its enemy. War is coming to Earth-Prime.
Of course, Uncle Bylar, the councillor, released the genetic plague in an effort to prevent civil war as the Infraverse expanded towards its edges, reducing the surplus population, and setting the Infraverse into the course of conquering Earth-Prime, where they might expand further again.

So Uncle Bylar was basically Thanos.

-Arcturus Rann is the main hero of Micronauts, though looks nothing like his toy (advantageously, for copywrite purposes). He is an intergalactic traveller, returning to the Microverse after a thousand-year journey (mostly in suspended animation, which is why he didn't age) along with his robot friend Biotron. Discovering that his homeworld has been taken over by Darth Va... Baron Karza, Rann takes his laser pistol and becomes a swashbuckling freedom fighter. During his long suspended animation, Rann split off "astral copies" of himself, many of which became Shadow Priests who set up churches to worship Rann's long-dead parents. In the end, the Priests merged with Rann, giving him the "Enigma Force" power to defeat Karza. With his beard and laser gun, he looks like a "Leader-type" character on many '80s kids cartoons.

-Rann is more or less a Space Hero Guy with a laser gun, but also has a glider (which is sorta what his toy was like- a golden-faced guy in a metal glider).

-Woooooaaaaahhhhhh man, this is SUCH a "1980s" character design, lol. Like, the whole "Rainbow lined" costume, the pastel-ish colors, and those triangular eye-patches of make-up- that's straight Jem & The Holograms as a super-heroine. Both Kitty Pryde & Diamond Lil, and DC's Looker, also had eye designs like that back in the day- as if they were mixing the "masked hero" costume tropes with "well we want the girls to be pretty and don't want to cover up their faces" thing and creating a happy medium. But that and the big, feathered hair just make Mari the most dated character in Micronauts now, but in a very charming way. They should keep that look forever.

-So Princess Mari is part of the royal family of Homeworld in the Microverse, but she and her brother Argon were forced into hiding when Baron Karza took over. Joining the rebellion, they attempted to fight back, but Mari was captured and sent to the "Pleasure Pits", where she escaped and disguised herself as Marionette, the freedom-fighter. She joins up with Arcturus Rann and the others, falling for Rann and giving up her right to the throne. Unlike the rest of the main heroes, she was not based off of a toy, and is thus 100% Marvel property.

-Marionette is a lighter, more acrobatic fighter than Rann, using the "Sword & Laser" fighting style.

Not that familiar with the story, but isn't the Enigma force just a rip-off of the more Powerful Phoenix Force?

It's the force that empowers Captain Universe and all like him, so it's on a somewhat similar tier, but leaves the character more quickly.

BIOTRON
Created By:
Bill Mantlo & Michael Golden
First Appearance: Micronauts #1 (Jan. 1979)
Role: Robot Buddy, C-3PO Knock-Off
Group Affiliations: The Micronauts

-Biotron was originally called "Robotman" as a 1975 Takara figure- a bridge between their Henshin Cyborg and Microman toy lines. He was a piloted mech suit with a lil' dude in the chest pilot seat, but for Micronauts, Biotron was made human-sized. In Micronauts #26 he was destroyed during a battle between Baron Karza & Hydra, but his memories were later downloaded into a giant spaceship "Bioship". He returned in Micronauts #58, but was again destroyed in Micronauts: The New Voyages, whatever that is, until being rebuild again, designed by the series artist Kelley Jones.

-I have no idea what abilities he had. Presumably he's pretty strong.

Also, at the time The Enigma Force was introduced, there was no "Phoenix Force" yet as such. Sure, Jean Grey was Phoenix by that time, but the explanation that it was The Phoenix Force inhabiting her was a retcon that came later.

-Bug is the most well-known and famous of the Micronauts, a much-beloved but little-known licensed comic from the long-long-ago. He was initially called Galactic Warrior, but on the fourth issue of Micronauts, Marvel realized that he looked different enough that they could claim him as an original character that they owned, and so he was renamed "Bug". He was apparently quite popular with female readers, in much the way Nightcrawler was on X-Men- the exotic appearance and slender physique was deemed fairly attractive. He appeared in both Micronauts books, lasting about seven years in total. When a relaunch was planned in the '90s, the team returned and a one-shot Bug book came out in 1997, but things fell apart and he vanished again. The characters then reappeared in Captain Marvel in 2000-01.

-As the most popular of the Micronauts by far, he got brought into the "Every Cosmic Character EVER" storylines based around the Annihilation Events, being a thief that Star-Lord sprung from jail to join his new Guardians of the Galaxy team. This becomes a bit funny later on, as Bug does not stay on the team after their first year or two, and has missed out on nearly every single subsequent appearance of the squad, thus making him look like a weird relic of the team. I mean, at least Captain Universe & Deathcry DIED. He popped up as a backgrounder during Reign of Kings and a couple other stories, largely as an add-on since Abnett & Lanning clearly remembered him, but that's it. He's not very powerful, or even that handy, but he's the team's comic relief, hitting on anything that moves, so he keeps getting put on to new teams.

-Bug is one of the least-powerful heroes kicking around Annihilation , being just a "Weapon Guy" with some good martial arts skills and some non-useful powers, but he's a well-rounded PL 9 (135) Scrapper archetype. If anything, he's got a TON of Advantages to fall back on, and is the team's best Stealth & Recon member, which is very useful in a gang that does LOTS of sneaking around, trying to avoid the fighting. Since the rest of the Guardians are much higher in PL, he's probably their worst member in a fight (the Xandarian Worldmind actually warns him STRONGLY against fighting even a single Galadorian Space Knight), but he can survive in a pinch.

-Acroyear is the Micronaut that most closely-resembles his toy- he is a noble Prince exiled from his home and forced to become a Space Gladiator, but retains his inner nobility and stoic nature. The comic plays him and the more naughty, free-wheeling Bug off each other, but both are actually great friends in spite of their differences.

-Acroyear is the most powerful of the Micronauts, being set up as a Powerhouse/Blaster type.

Marvel’s Alien Races

Post by Jabroniville »

MARVEL'S ALIEN RACES:

-Another set of largely-unchanged reposts, I figured I'd get the old Alien Races builds I'd finished posted.

Marvel, as a whole, has three KEY Alien Races- The Skrulls (an early "Little Green Men" invading army in Fantastic Four), The Kree (blue-skinned generic spacemen, also in FF), and the Shi'ar (created as quasi-avian people in Chris Claremont & Dave Cockrum's X-Men run). The 1960s of comics featured mainly Skrulls and Kree, plus a CRAP-TON of one-shot alien races meant to menace Thor or Giant-Man for a single throwaway issue of Journey Into Mystery or something between big stories. Seriously, looking at Wikipedia's List of Alien Races in the Marvel Universe, it's REPLETE with examples of these kind of one-shot guys. In the '70s, we had a lot of cosmic stuff, with Stan Lee's Silver Surfer, and Jim Starlin's Adam Warlock & Captain Marvel.

The Skrulls & Kree were given as the two "Big" races for eons (including Roy Thomas' legendary The Kree/Skrull War), until Claremont suddenly decided that the Shi'ar were the best race in the galaxy in the late 1970s. This coincided with a lot of writers ignoring Marvel's Space Scene for a while, so it worked out well for the X-books, as THEY became the pre-emiment space travellers. The Shi'ar thing fell by the wayside a bit until Operation: Galactic Storm, a positivelty titanic crossover between all the Avengers books (at this point being Avengers, Avengers West Coast, Captain America, Quasar, Iron Man, Thor & Wonder Man), based around a war between the Kree and the Shi'ar. This thing was HUGE, but was unfortunately a bit meandering and dull, since a lot of the villains were bland (most Kree rulers other than The Supreme Intelligence are a bit generic), and the Shi'ar Imperial Guard, a recurring team since the X-Men of the '70s, had never really developed any personality over the years aside from "Legion of Super-Heroes Homages". This story ended with a Nega-Bomb wiping out almost all of the Kree Empire, an act set off by the Intelligence, so that the Kree's stagnant evolution could "Re-Start" and make the race more powerful. I don't think this ever got touched on again outside this generation of writers, so it was all kind of a waste.

Marvel had a trio of crossovers (Annihilation, Annihilation: Conquest and War of Kings), each of which featured the last days of one of the three big empires. The Skrulls got their asses kicked by the end of Secret Invasion (setting off Dark Reign in the series of interconnected events), and were nearly finished off by Annihilus' Negative Zone forces in Annihilation. In Conquest, we say Ultron lead the Phalanx against the Kree, killing tons of them (and the Supreme Intelligence). War of Kings featured the death of Lilandra and Vulcan, the fall of the Shi'ar to The Kree, and Gladiator becoming the new Emperor of the Shi'ar while The Inhumans took over the Kree Empire. But then Hickman's Fantastic Four undid the Kree stuff, as The Inhumans just wandered back to Earth, the Kree invaded for no particular reason, and the S.I. got resurrected using a pair of Alternate Reed Richardses. Then a bunch of races allied in Infinity, as The Mapmakers tore the Universe apart trying to destroy Earth.

Marvel's Alien Empires are kind of the sort that get written out of the books for years at a time, then return in their baseline, "original" form, since that's where most people are familiar with them.

-So like I said, Marvel is replete with examples of one-shot Alien Races that appear for a single issue, and then vanish forever when the hero either helps them through a crisis, or kicks the invaders' butts and sends them packing. Many of these are just "odd-coloured humanoids", but there's a surprising amount of eight-foot-tall powerhouses and other weird things interspersed here. I was only going to do the reasonably well-known ones like Ovoids & junk, but wouldn't ya know I found an ENTIRE list of these bastards on Wikipedia and had an hour of free time, so enjoy a STAGGERING amoung of mini-Templates to throw onto whatever. You can throw one of these onto my Badoon Build (as a Generic Spaceman Build), some of my Mook builds, a Caveman, etc., to equal just about any kind of Villainous Alien Mook.

Other Races:

It's the force that empowers Captain Universe and all like him, so it's on a somewhat similar tier, but leaves the character more quickly.
Also, at the time The Enigma Force was introduced, there was no "Phoenix Force" yet as such. Sure, Jean Grey was Phoenix by that time, but the explanation that it was The Phoenix Force inhabiting her was a retcon that came later.
Thanks guys.
One other recent retcon, the 'Enigma Force' is the counterpoint to Knull, the God of Symbiotes. I don't understand how, but that's what Marvel is going with these days.

In an unrelated post, I'm cleaning out ages of downloaded- I mean, Perfectly Legally Acquired Digital Backups Of Marvel Comics I Purchased (Honest)(tm), and realized just how bananas some of the stuff from the 90s and early 2000s was in hindsight, and how many absolutely useless characters there are for Jab to still build.
