True story. In my roleplaying infancy (the 80's) I still remember looking at the AD&D 1st Edition Monster Manual for the very first time. That book is chock full of dragons, demons, and undead; but it was the picture of a Roc carrying off a god damn elephant that made me say "what the hell is that thing?" Even worse, at the end of the creature's description, it said something like "tamed by giants" and I was like "how in the hell do you tame that?" Boy, those were the days.

Lol, I always have that reaction, to them and Giants. I see them billed as mid-tier threats and I’m like “WHAT PARTY COULD BEAT THOSE!?!” A Roc is a completely mind-blowing thing in any reality.

-The Andean & California Condors are the largest flying animals in North America, the largest overall birds of prey on Earth, and the Californian variety is critically endangered, with only about 170 animals left when I last did Animal Builds (increased to 518 as of 2019). They are absolutely huge soaring birds that intermittently fast, and will then gorge on so much meat that they cannot even lift off. Condors, being large animals with no known predators in adulthood, can live for a very long time- up to 50 years in the wild and 79 years in captivity! This makes "Thaao", the male Andean Condor, the longest-lived bird ever known.

-Condors, despite their size, aren't that high-level because most of their prey is already dead. But with an elite version packing some good accuracy, you can stat up a somewhat-dangerous minion sitting on The Penguin's cane or something.

Colouring: White with black & red.
Size: Up to 4'3" (6-9 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs.
Diet: Insects, snakes, small animals.
Tactics: Stomp to death.

-The very odd Secretary Bird is the only Bird of Prey to be terrestrial- hitting as high as 4'3" and 9 lbs., it has an eagle-like head and crane-like legs, making it a pouncing predator that hunts small animals and insects, as well as snakes. People can't quite agree on how it got the name- it's suggested that it was misheard from "Sagittarius" (the bird was thought to have an archer-like gait), or the Arabic "hawk who flies". It can fly, but typically hunts by walking around like cranes & storks do. They are Endangered throughout their range, requiring long grasses in which to hunt.

-Secretary Birds are very accurate and have good defenses, but are very slender and graceful, having not very much weight spread out across four feet of animal.

Owls

Post by Jabroniville »

OWLS:
-Owls form the order Strigiformes, with True Owls & Barn Owls splitting it. They vary greatly in size, like Birds of Prey do, with some being tiny (the Pygmy Owl) and others matching the size of many Eagles (the Eagle-Owl or Gray Owl). Like Birds of Prey, they dispatch prey via talons and beaks, though their beaks are relatively tiny and pointy.

Owls are specialized stealth hunters, often doing so at night- many have adapted themselves to fly almost silently (technology can only barely pick up air disturbances by their extra-fluffy feathers, which muffle all noise). Their ears are asymmetrical to allow them to pinpoint sounds, helped by "radar dish" faces- feathers encircle their faces to focus sounds. Like most birds, they cannot move their eyes in their sockets, and must turn their entire head to allow them to spot things- this is helped by having 14 vertebrae, giving them the uncanny ability to turn their heads almost 360 degrees without changing position- another stealth adaptation.

Their huge eyes and quiet nature has made them symbols of intelligence and wisdom, especially in Europe, but they're actually not especially intelligent.

-Burrowing Owls are tiny, long-legged owls named for their ability to burrow into the ground. They occupy a huge range over the Americas, and are fairly popular for being the cutest of their family. Unusually for owls, they will sometimes eat fruits & seeds, but they mostly pick the most-populous creature in their range, like the vesper mouse or house gecko.

-Burrowing Owls are highly-defensive, but very weak and fragile, hitting PL 0.5 unarmed, PL 1.5 defensively.

-Positively adorable, these owls are less than a pound in weight, and fit in a human hand comfortably. There are 29 species of Pygmy Owl around this size. There is also the Puerto Rican Owl, Long-Whiskered Owlet, Flammulated Owl, Collared Owlet, the five kinds of Saw-Whet Owls, the 23 species of Screech Owls (named for their piercing cries), some of the Hawk-Owls (like the Christmas Island Hawk-Owl), and most of the 57 kinds of Scops Owls (most of whom are bark-colored to blend in with trees). The smallest overall is the Elf Owl. The Little Owl of Eurasia is the one most commonly associated with Athena, Goddess of Wisdom. Its relatives in the group "Athene" include the Spotted Owlet and others.

-These Tiny Owls & Owlets are ridiculously small, and only really a threat to insects and the tiniest of rodents. Most are 5-7 inches long and weigh less than two ounces.

-Owls of this size are typically rodent-hunters and little threat to human beings. The Tawny Owl of Eurasia is about this big, and is probably the "iconic" owl, sporting the most-imitated "Hoo-Hoo!" call (a duet between male and female). These include the Forest Owlet of India (related to the "Athene" Owl branch), the two White-Faced Owls of Africa, some of the largest Scops Owls (including the Giant Scops Owl, which still isn't that big), the nine species of Eared Owls, some of the Wood Owls (23 species across Eurasia & North America), and the extinct Laughing Owl of New Zealand. There are also 35 species of Hawk-Owls, or Boobooks, which live across Asia & Australia- most are about this size. These include the Barking Owl (named for its dog-like call), Rufous Owl and others. The Northern Hawk-Owl is actually unrelated, but about the same anyways.

-Barn Owls are the most widely-distributed species of Owl, and one of the world's most widely-distributed birds, living across most of the world where humans do. They are excellent hunters and have distinctive, ghostly appearances that made them feared across much of their range, with people from Europe to the Aztecs accusing them of being devils or disease-givers- their raspy calls evoke this as well. The cryptid "Mothman" is often thought to be a Barn Owl that was mistakenly assumed to be much larger- its shape is a dead giveaway. There are 17 species of Barn Owls (including the main one that gave their name to the whole group) and three species of related Bay Owls, who are slightly smaller.

Size: Up to 24 inches long (1-2 lbs.)

Tactics: Locate and attack stealthily from a high perch.

-These include the amazingly-named Powerful Owl, an apex predator Hawk-Owl from Eastern Australia, Brown Wood Owl of India, Ural Owl, Crested Owl, and the Spectacled Owls (named for the light patterns around their eyes). A handful of large Barn Owls are this size- like the Masked Owls. The most commonly-found group is the Horned Owls, which contains most of the largest species- 20 species in total, with most fitting this level, include a variety of Eagle-Owls, the Fishing Owls of Africa, and the Lesser Horned Owl.

-Medium-Sized Owls are PL 3.5-ish- good hunters, but very small, so even their long talons don't do that much damage to things, and they're very fragile. Most of these are around 1-2 lbs.- even the largest owls are nowhere near as heavy as Bald or Golden Eagles.

The largest Horned Owls are on this tier as well, including Verreaux's Eagle-Owl, Blakiston's Fish Owl (possibly the heaviest, at over 10 lbs. sometimes), and the Eurasian Eagle-Owl (5-10 lbs.).

-The Great Horned Owl is probably the most famous kind in North America- their distinctive "horns" are tufts of feathers. It lives through almost the entirety of the Americas, which is part of why it's so recognizable as well. It occupies the same ecological niche as the similar-sized Red-Tailed Hawk, and is one of the most adaptable birds in the world- over its vast range, it can live anywhere from wintry boreal forests to the tropical rainforests of the Amazon. They have the largest prey profile of any raptor in the Americas, eating up to 500 different species, but primarily focus on Rabbits as a prey source. Prey is typically crushed by the feet, often compacted for easier carrying.

-Owls are a pretty cool bird in their own right, being night-time hunters designed for flying about in absolute darkness. Stats-wise, they're basically about the size of Falcons & Eagles, mostly around 4-5 lbs. in weight, but lack a bit of Defense comparatively. They DO have Accurate Hearing, though, allowing them to spot and grab the tiniest rodents in absolute darkness. It was thought that it was their eyesight that allowed this, but though they DO have great Night-Vision, it's their ear tufts that allow them to capture prey. They have circular pits from ear-to-eye that are at slightly different sizes to allow the owls to "satellite dish" sounds in an area, and detect the exact position of targets. Owls make so little noise when they fly that advanced technological equipment is required to even SLIGHTLY-observe it.
