This was a show I caught a few episodes of as a kid. I was never a huge fan, but it was essentially "Transformers with Dinosaurs", which isn't a terrible concept. Also, Genghis Rex has to be one of the most awesome villain names EVER.

It was more light-hearted than Transformers from what I remember, which isn't inherently a bad thing. There was one episode where David got captured by the Tyrannos, and he was dropped off with Genghis Rex and a couple other bad guys on the roof of a skyscraper. Not being familiar with Earth builds, we got this exchanged:

Genghis Rex: "Human! How do we reach the ground level of this structure?!"

David: *gestures to the edge of the roof* "Jump, Godzilla. When you hear the 'SPLAT!', you're there."

That always gets a chuckle out of me for some reason.

So not a great show, but fun and inoffensive. Plus the opening theme was awesomely 80s.

Man, I consider myself a pretty big 80s toy/cartoon afficianado, and I've NEVER heard of these guys. I've heard of Sun Man and The Rulers of the Sun, and I've never heard of Golden Girl and the Guardians of the Gemstones. Much like Sun Man, it's kind of interesting to see what other folks do with the She-Ra concept. And honestly, given Sun Man got recently incorporated to Masters of the Universe lore, it'd be kind of interesting to see something similar happen to Golden Girl here.

Heh, like Jab I watched this show a bit as a kid as well. It was one of the sub-genres of 80s toons, the "Hidden Friends That Bonds With Children" shows like The Littles, My Pet Monster and the like. I also remember Popples being somewhat unique as a show since it equally featured boy and girl Popples, along one human boy and girl to be their friends. And since the episodes were fairly light fun stuff, it was something both boys and girls could potentially enjoy. It was kind of neat to see that kind of thing back then.

As for the Popples themselves, they remind me as kind of "less evil Animaniacs". They were generally fun loving and couple pull basically anything fitting their theme out of their back pouches, but they didn't cause literal mayhem the way the Warner Siblings did. It was more . . . well, wholesome.

This was another series and toy line I caught as a kid. And you've got to give the 80s credit, when they're willing to say "Can we make an action toy line out of mountain climbing?", they were willing to try anything. As toys go, the idea of sliding figures along strings you connected to various bits of your room to create this web of action isn't a terrible one, but the sheer clean up and work, as well as length limitations of the various ropes and bits made it harder to work with.

The concept for the show itself actually isn't bad, and works to justify things. Some new super element appears in the South Pacific, creating an island that is constantly restructuring itself, forming new mountains and rock formations on a daily, if not hourly basis. The only way to navigate the area are experienced mountain climbers, using a combination of jet and power cables to get around. They actually justify the use of the cables and such due to fuel limitations and needing to conserve resources. And as someone who watched GoBots back in the day, it's funny hearing Cy-Kil's voice coming out of General Plague. And credit where it's due, the High Frontier is a cool name and an excellent source of adventure, with Theta-7 not only being a resource to search for, but also creating an unstable environment, including strange mutations, monsters and the like. So it had some fun story telling potential.

The outfit designs also look straight out of something Jack Kirby's design book, which I can appreciate.

And I'll give them credit, the intro works to sell the concept of the series.

Jabroniville wrote: Sat Jan 08, 2022 3:14 am -So if you're anything like me, you looked up old '80s cartoons on the internet one day and were like "What the f*ck is Dinosaucers?" because seriously, what in Satan's burning red crap is THIS? Apparently it was a 65-episode series that came out in 1987 and then disappeared forever because Galoob's plan on releasing a toyline fell apart because viewers were like "What the shit is this?" and never took to the show. This cancellation of the toyline caused many markets to just dump the show before it was even finished. Brazil received the show in 1989 and actually used some of the unproduced toys' molds, releasing 5 of the 8 figures- naturally turning those into collectors' items.
...well, I had fun watching it.
I sometimes wonder how I would have felt if I'd seen Dinosaucers as a kid. I LOVED dinosaurs when I was little, so a cartoon full of them was exactly my jam. Hell I even watched Denver the Last Dinosaur as a kid! So maybe the sci-fi laser-beams show with humanoid dinos would have been something I liked? It's hard to say. I just know that as an adult I'm like "WTF?", hence the snarky-ass review of it, lol.

Eagle Force

EAGLE FORCE:
Created By: Mego
Era: 1982

-So way, way back in 1982, at roughly the exact same time as G.I. Joe was being rebooted into Real American Hero, the Mego Corporation created "Eagle Force", which was pretty much the same thing. Capitalizing on Reagan-era patriotism and "we're not being pushed around anymore!", it featured a band of Captain Eagle's anti-terrorism forces against R.I.O.T. (Roving International Organization of Tyranny) under General Mamba (based on Idi Amin), and containing numerous other ethnic villains, like the Arabic terrorist Nemesis. Characters suspiciously match up with G.I. Joe at points, featuring names like Wild Bill and a female character like Scarlett (the pilot Goldie Hawk).

The line was more or less destroyed by Mego's shit luck. See, the company was doing pretty okay in the 1970s, but turned down the offer to produce toys for some no-name sci-fi movie. Upstart company Kenner decided to give this "Star Wars" thing a try and suddenly they were making hundreds of millions of dollars and Mego went bankrupt by late 1982, even though apparently the first sets of Eagle Force sold out in Target stores. As a new line, Eagle Force was quickly ignored and dropped, while only Mego's successful things carried on and were bought up by other companies.

Eagle Force featured the eyepatch-wearing Captain Eagle, Big Bro, The Cat, Harley, Kayo, Redwing, Sgt. Brown, Stryker, Turk, Wild Bill, Zapper and Goldie Hawk. The R.I.O.T. forces include General Mamba, Baron Von Chill, Beta Man (an arsonist), Nemesis the Saboteur, Savitar the Ninja, and a Shock Trooper figure. Figures were die-cast, meaning they were shiny and pretty heavy. There was a mountain base, a jet, two jeeps and two tanks, all based on existing products so no new molds had to be created.

I know at the time Mego never could have predicted that Star Wars would be a hit, let alone the juggernaut franchise that it would become, but it's hillarious in hindsight that they made toys for The Love Boat of all things, but not Star Wars.

Tonka just didn't seem to have it's shit in gear- the line was released with no massive commercial campaign, TV cartoon, comic book line, coloring books nor storybooks. It was just kinda "Hey look! These are cool!" and that was it. So kids had a good reason to love the toys but not enough reason to REALLY love them, you know? No emotional connection or cool TV episode devoted to how much you should want to buy the thing.
Their was a comic but only in the UK, https://comicvine.gamespot.com/super-na ... 050-40239/ i vaguely remember reading the holiday special (a bit like tales from the crypt in structure)

Rubik's Cube

Post by Jabroniville »

RUBIK'S CUBE:
Created By: Ernő Rubik/Ideal Toy Corp.
Era: 1974-present

-The famous 1980s toy craze Rubik's Cube was created by Hungarian sculptor and architect Ernő Rubik in 1974- initially called the "Magic Cube", he licensed it to Idea Toy Corp. in 1980 and it became a runaway smash hit. While I never had remotely the patience nor the aptitude for doing these things, they are not only the world's best-selling puzzle game, but the world's best-selling toy, hitting 350 million cubes sold worldwide. Though the craze ended almost instantaneously ("the craze has died" was said in only *1982*), even today you'll find "Speedcubers" and the like- apparently computers have indicated the shorted number of spins to solve the puzzle is 20.

-Hilariously, the craze was so big that the inexplicable cartoon series Rubik, The Amazing Cube was created, but right as the fad died. This show, which only lasted 13 episodes, featured the asinine concept of a solved Rubik's Cube that would sprout feet and a weird alien head, then fly around and use magical powers to help a couple of ordinary teens save the day. The plot usually revolved around Rubik having to be "solved" to unleash him- he could do nearly anything (like transform the main character into a dog), but a simple knock would often "scramble" him, and so the heroes would have to solve the puzzle again to break him free. This would be troublesome because the character would often be upside-down, or still in dog-form or something. Unusually for the time, the supporting kids were all Latinos. The enemy was an evil magician, but once there was also a bully who was competing with Reynaldo for a girl's affection.

The Pirates of Dark Water

Post by Jabroniville »

THE PIRATES OF DARK WATER:
Created By: Hanna-Barbera
Era: 1991-92

-One of those universal "Cult Favorite" shows is definitely The Pirates of Dark Water, which came out with a ton of hype and great animation & character designs, then vanished almost as soon as it arrived, leaving annoyed fans and a vocal "Doom Patrol Fandom" that never got to see anything else. Yet everyone you talk to who's heard of the show has fond memories of it. As a kid, I remember thinking Ioz was like the coolest character ever. The show was moody, dark and had an aura of forboding, with this lethal "dark water" at the heart of everything, and a lost prince trying to lead a disparate band of weirdos to save the world.

The show centers around Prince Rein of the world of Mer, where the seas are sailed frequently, but "dark water" threatens the globe- this is some kind of acidic, oily substance that devours everything it touches. Ren is trying to find the lost Thirteen Treasures of Rule, and teams up with a mysterious magically-powered woman named Tula (voiced by Jodi "Ariel" Benson) and the greedy pirate named Ioz (Hector Elizondo at first). Along with his annoying pet/mascot Niddler (a monkey/parrot thing that talks), they fight the evil pirates, led by the deformed Bloth.

The series had a huge budget, and was meant by Hanna-Barbera (the kings of cheapskate animation and silly 'toons) to be this big outstanding thing- David Kirschner, the writer of An American Tail, had a lot of hope in the project, which he created. They attempted some "high art" things unusual for the time, like a grim world full of death and danger. In one notable episode, an old flame of Ren's father shows up- she is cold and aloof to his shipmates but clearly adores him. She reveals that she loved King Primus, but was left for Ren's mother- furious, she attacked him and swore revenge. Becoming an alchemist, she gave herself a youth potion with Dark Water itself as an ingredient- attaining the youth she sought, she had Bloth attempt to marry her to Ren (as a ship's captain, he had the legal right to do so)... but during the ceremony, the very Dark Water used to construct the potion ATE HER ALIVE FROM THE INSIDE, literally decaying her into a black pile of sludge.

It got a solid assortment of things associated with cartoons at the time- a toyline featuring all the major heroes plus Bloth and many of his deformed pirate minions, a Super NES video game (it's pretty weaksauce- you can play all three human heroes but it's just endless flat stages of beating up the same five guys, with each Bloth Minion as a Stage Boss), and more. Unfortunately, the high budget and a switch in networks killed the show early. 21 episodes were all that were produced, leaving a heartbroken legion of fans behind. Despite the love, nobody ever remade the series- it had no big reboots, nor a continuation in comics form. Pirates of Dark Water just died.

Complications:
Motivation (Stopping the Dark Water)- Ren must gather the Thirteen Treasures to hold back the Dark Water that threatens all of Mer.
Relationship (Fellow Sailors)- Ren and Niddler tease each other mercilessly, but Ren owes Niddler his life. Ren looks up to Ioz as an "older brother" type, viewing him as more worldly, but views his quarrelsome nature as dangerous. He is coming to grips with how he feels about Tula, treating her as a worthy sailor one minute, and someone to have deep conversations with the next... or he just looks like a fool trying to impress her.

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 48--23 / Advantages: 11 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 16 (116)

-The young Prince Ren is the hero of Pirates of Dark Water- the son of the dead King of Octopon, he was raised by a lighthouse keeper, unaware of his heritage for years. He ultimately learns the truth of his birth, and is charged with gathering the Thirteen Treasures to cure the world of Dark Water. He gathers Niddler, Tula & Ioz to his group, and must control the disparate personalities, like when Tula steals from a band of nigh-immortal powerhouses and is to be punished (Ren naturally blames the pirate Ioz, but Tula was swiping stuff to save her own people)- Ren has to argue that he himself will take on the punishment intended for his crew unless he makes right, and does so. He was voiced by George Newburn, who later voiced Superman for numerous DC Animated productions.

-Ren is not a trained fighter, but is naturally athletic and learns quickly. He's quick-witted and somewhat wise, but is young and naive to many things and thus his judgement isn't always clear.

I own a carded General Mamba. Even though the figure and colour art depict him as Caucasian, he looks African in the black and white art on the back of the card. Of course, that's not surprising since he was based on Idi Amin.
Always ask before you use someone's Original Character.
Never ever use them without permission. Only Villains do that.

Defenses:
Dodge +11 (DC 21), Parry +12 (DC 22), Toughness +4, Fortitude +6, Will +6

Complications:
Motivation (Greed)- Ioz is a treasure hunter and mercenary whose reputation precedes him- he joins the quest in hopes of finding more treasure, and frequently tries to push his fellow sailors into quests for it.
Reputation (Mercenary)- Ioz has an enemy in almost every port, owing to a life of thievery and greed.
Relationship (Fellow Sailors)- Ioz admires Ren's honesty and courage, but finds him a bit naive and stodgy. He & Tula frequently argue as well.
Enemy (Bloth)- Ioz formelry sailed with Bloth. "It ended ugly", he says. One can imagine his greed had something to do with it, or Bloth's immense evil.
Relationship (Solia- Sister)- Ioz's sister is met occasionally.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 59--28 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 15 (115)

-I thought Ioz was SO RAD when I was a kid. He had a cool look, bad-ass scars, and a course voice, and threw a wrench into the works by being this experienced, greedy mercenary when he was recruited on this noble quest, intending to use it to find more treasure. This made him seem kind of "different" to the usual heroes, who were generally more noble. It's said he would do almost anything for a handful of gold (in one episode, he's lured onto a ghost ship in search of treasure, and is nearly forced to marry the Ghost Pirate Queen as she turns him into a ghost- Ren has to have Tula separate his spirit from his body so his spirit can touch the ghost lady, rescuing Ioz in the process).

-A rough & tumble brawler with loads of experience, Ioz seemed more worldly than young, naïve Ren, making the youthful hero look up to Ioz a bit... even though he also had issues trusting him. Ioz was formerly a member of Bloth's crew, and the most experienced seafarer of Ren's group, making him very important. Ioz was voiced first by Héctor Elizondo, then Jim Cummings in later ones.

-Ioz is the "Team Strongman", though isn't nearly as big as most of those types tend to be- with his huge sword and big muscles, though, he's easily the heaviest hitter considering how both Ren & Tula are undersized for this universe of muscle-men. His skills are of a more larcenous degree than the others, and he's the best helmsman as well.

I really liked this show for the short amount of time it was on.

This more than anything just shows how much toy/cartoon companies of the 80s were willing to throw anything at the wall and see if it sticks. Once again going with the "secret friend" concept, this has to be one of the more insane ideas for a cartoon this side of Turbo Teen. And yes, I actually caught a few episodes when I was a kid, but even my kid brain was quick to realize this was stupid.
