THE PIRATES OF DARK WATER:
Created By: Hanna-Barbera
Era: 1991-92
Ah, Pirates of Dark Water. What a frickin awesome title and great concept. I loved this show as a kid and even now, I adore the concept of a swash buckling fantasy adventure. It was sort of a precursor to Gargoyles in that it had an ongoing story, serious threats, evolving characters and a darker theme than many cartoons of the time.

One thing you've got to give Hanna-Barbera is that when they created a fantasy world, they didn't just lazily copy Tolkien, Howard or Dungeons and Dragons. The world of Mer was it's own unique setting with a lot of crazy concepts, none as horrifying as the notion of the Dark Water itself. Sailing is already a perilous thing, but the idea of these sentient, evil pools of darkness that will randomly appear to consume entire ships was some solid nightmare fuel. The fact that enough of the stuff could gather and devour ISLANDS whole took it to the next level. Add to that creates like the Constrictus and how grotesque a lot of characters looked, and it definitely wasn't for the faint of heart.

It's a shame the series never got a proper conclusion or a re-make, as it had some very fun ideas. Sadly, I don't know that I'd trust a lot of modern creators to do the franchise justice. Pirates of Dark Water had a darker theme, but there was still fun, optimism and swashbuckling adventure. Yeah, the world was in a dark place, but the heroes were working their butts off to save it, and they had a real chance of doing so. The art style was unique, the world felt like it was this vast place that everyone was exploring, I've got a real urge to rewatch this series now.

Secret (Backstory)- Tula is hard-pressed to give up much of her backstory to others.
Relationship (Fellow Sailors)- Tula & Ioz argue frequently- he is a womanizer and a chauvinist, which obviously angers her.

Total: Abilities: 58 / Skills: 35--17 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 14 / Defenses: 14 (116)

-The beautiful, magically-powered Tula is seemingly constructed from "Exotic Appealing Girl" tropes, having dark skin, fanciful hair, arched eyebrows, a skin-baring outfit, and startlingly blue eyes to make her look even more improbable. But the show was funny with her, turning her into an impetuous, argumentative girl who frequently badgered Ioz. She was played by Jodi Benson, aka Ariel from The Little Mermaid, in a rare TV series role- she didn't use Jodi's "Ariel" voice at all from what I can see, which is funny because when I met Jodi, she sounded pretty much like Ariel.

-Tula was a "tavern wench" who revealed secret powers as an "Ecomancer", which got her recruited on Ren's quest when she stowed away on his ship, the Wraith. She has a sort of sensitivity towards the planet of Mer, and is able to throw out a variety of powesr. However, she nearly ruins an early mission by swiping some maps from ancient beings- Ren has to argue for her life, and she refuses to divulge why she took them, casting a shadow over the group, as Ren struggles to control it.

-Tula's Ecomancy can sort of delve into "Whatever the plot needs", but she's not that powerful with it. She has to be in contact with whatever she's manipulating, for example, or have a direct line to it via branches or the roots of plants. I made her more PL 7 than the others because her powers otherwise making her overpowered compared to Ren & Ioz, but when plants are nearby, she can ensnare others easily, hitting her full caps that way.

Addiction (Food)- Niddler is hungry constantly, perhaps as a function of his species, or because he was once a starving slave.

Total: Abilities: 30 / Skills: 10--5 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 5 / Defenses: 8 (52)

-Niddler is a Monkey-Bird- a sentient, talking winged creature with human-esque hands and an annoying personality- the hallmarks of the "Annoying Animal Sidekick" so common in children's media from the '70s on. He was voiced by Roddy MacDowell at first, but was replaced by Frank Welker in the series proper- this was such a dramatic shift (Roddy's casual English accent with Welker's screechy animal-esque speech) that Welker was re-dubbed into the first five episodes when they were re-aired! Niddler has eyes of solid green, lacking pupils, and is from what is generally a "slave race" of beings. Imprisoned by Bloth in the Pilot Episode, he is freed by Ren and joins his quest, occasionally giving advice, and most often being one to whom Ren confesses his personal struggles, as he's the only one Ren doesn't feel he needs to order around or impress. A starving slave in the opener, he "Flanderizes" into a food addict later on, being easily convinced to do even dangerous things when food is dangled in front of him.

Complications:
Motivation (Power & Greed)- Bloth appears to want it all.
Responsibility (Ego)- Bloth can be provoked into doing unwise things because of his own ego, thinking himself higher than common scum.
Enemy (Ren)- Bloth despised King Primus for some reason, and has switched his hatred from the dead man to his son.

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 49--23 / Advantages: 22 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 14 (125)

-Bloth is a bit atypical of Cartoon Villains around this time- while he was a complete behemoth of a man and generically evil, he was just FREAKISHLY deformed and never shown to be this total idiot, prone to humiliation. Like, he has giant purple lips and sickly, pallid flesh- he and his crew were total monsters. Bloth appears to just be out for the Evulz, and has a massive pirate ship constructed out of dead leviathans- so large it has its own monster chamber, a whole civilization of people, and countless slaves. Among them is the escapee who turned out to be Ren's father, the King of Octopon. Bloth seeks the Thirteen Treasures and constantly hunts Ren as well. He wasn't without standards, though- when Ioz was set against a swordsman, Bloth was sporting enough to offer him a sword... on the other side of the four-armed swordsman. But there was the time when he & Ren had to team up against a threat- Ren had saved him when he could have let Bloth die, and so later Bloth agreed to have Ren's back in another scrap.

-Bloth is enormous to the point where he's easily the strongest character around, but of course can't manage to tag a major character with his sword to save his life. He also has a ship that's so huge it's effectively a headquarters, with nearly every plot convenience available to it. He also appears to have an eidetic memory- particularly about anyone who's ever crossed him.

-I'll definitely give the show this- it did NOT just go for the "Generic Mook Designs" for these guys- Bloth's goons are as hideous as he is, and ridiculously diverse. Mantus is almost every bit a humanoid preying mantis, Konk is a short, bloated tool, and the Lugg Brothers are giants.

Pirates:
MANTUS- PL 6 (70):
-Mantus is voiced by Optimus Prime himself, Peter Cullen, and is a large-foreheaded, tall, lanky pirate who is stronger than he looks. He has the generic build.

KONK- PL 6 (66): ST -2, STA -1, FIGHTING +1, Close Attack 1, Intimidation -2 [-4]
-Konk is the typical "Dwarfish Henchman" and a total buffoon, but is among the first animated characters voiced by Tim Curry! He had a lot of bluster, and was the only person ever to survive being thrown to the Constrictus deep within Bloth's ship- he returned one leg short.

THE LUGG BROTHERS- PL 6 (68): ST +2, STA +2, AGI -1, FIGHTING -2, INT -1, AWA -1 [-2]
-A pair of giant twins who debut early, but pretty well vanish from the show after the first five episodes, as the writers forget about them.

Air Raiders

AIR RAIDERS:
Created By: Hasbro
Era: 1987

-OHHHHHHHHHH- I think I've SEEN these things before! Not the vehicles, but the little, mostly-featureless figures that came with them! Either at the YMCA or something else, but they look familiar. I didn't realize they were meant to be little pilots. The Air Raiders are a little known line by Hasbro, featuring the "Evil Tyrants of Wind" taking over Airlandia and seizing control of its air supply. A "band of courageous rebels", the Air Raiders, fight against them.

This is largely a "Vehicle Line", as the figures are two inches tall and don't have a lot to them- they are instead in very detailed vehicles of various sizes, most of which have some guns or something on them. Some are big enough to only fit 1-2 figures on them, but there's also very large ones like the Thunderhammer or Man-O-War, which are probably a foot long or so. The latter one actually looks like a solid "flagship" model. The vehicles are about as detailed as G.I. Joe ones, but much smaller in scale and more monochromatic. It's really no surprise why the line died out quickly, though- they're tiny figures and there's no real "character" to anything. A comic book series from Marvel's subsidiary Star Comics was released alongside them, and that probably had more fame and staying power than the toys did.

Reminds me a bit of Manta Force in that the vehicles were decent but the tiny figures than came with them were terrible (even worse than the Air Raiders figures). Did anyone else have the big white Manta Force spaceship, the one with all the smaller vehicles inside?

Skeleton Warriors

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

SKELETON WARRIORS:
Created By: Landmark Entertainment Group & Playmates
Era: 1994-1995

-A mostly-forgotten would-be franchise, Skeleton Warriors was a TMNT-like thing that used a band of badass-looking knights and undead warriors as the central characters, flying around on flying skeletal motorcycles. Though actually, the show was named after the BAD GUYS- the heroes were the "Legion of Light" and nobody was a skeleton. 1994 being the absolute WORST time to debut something like this (it was very "Image Comics" but as the comic book industry was fading), it quickly failed, producing only 13 episodes, a video game, and one line of toys.

The characters hail from the planet of Luminaire, with two sides fighting over the Lightstar Crystal, which powers their city. It is split between the main villain and the main hero- the villain, Baron Dark, uses his half to turn all those with evil hearts into living skeletons for his army. Prince Lightstar, leader of the forces of good, fights against him alongside his Legion of Light. In the Series Finale, Lightstar kills Dark by throwing him into a pit of lava.

The whole concept was created by Gary Goddard, who owned Landmark (which was also behind Captain Power and the He-Man movie)- he was inspired to create it after his godson was enamored with the "Skeleton Warriors" Conan the Barbarian fought in a Universal Studios stage show.

Image

PRINCE LIGHTSTAR (Justin Lightstar): Prince of Luminaire and holder of one half of the Lightstar Crystal. Gains Energy Blasts through his hands or his sword.
GRIMSKULL (Joshua Lightstar): Justin's younger brother- envious of Justin, he joined Baron Dark at first. He learned the error of his ways after he was deformed by Dark, and now allies with the others. A very obvious case of "The Lancer", and also an Image-style anti-hero. Also becomes an Undead creature, but can travel through shadows. Has a wolf sidekick named Stalker.
TALYN (Jennifer Steele): The Chick. Compassionate and caring princess. She later learns how to transform skeletons back into humans (via removing "heart gems" from their chests). Gains Flight powers and hawk-like vision.
URSAK THE GUARDIAN: Lightstar's uncle, taking the role of the "Wise Old Mentor" and "The Inventor", building all of the team's gear.

BARON DARK: The main villain, who can transform anyone with any evil in their hearts into Skeleton Warriors.
DR. CYBORN: Token Evil Inventor. A cyborg.
SHRIEK: A beautiful woman with an evil heart, she was transformed by Baron Dark to "add a woman's touch" to his Skeleton Warriors. She maintains a crush on Prince Lightstar.
ARACULA: Six-armed spider-like creature turned skeletal. Speaks in grunts and is a bodyguard/berserker type.
CLAW: Skeletal werewolf.
DAGGER: Baron Dark's dwarfish slave and personal attendant.

Grimskull is such a hillariously 90s edgy name that I kinda love it. I've seen only the first couple episodes of this show, but the theme song is great, as any cartoon of this period should be.

The Incredible Crash Dummies

Post by Jabroniville »

Image
Image

THE INCREDIBLE CRASH DUMMIES:
Created By: Tyco (toys), Lamb & Company (TV show)
Era: 1991-1994

-Crash test dummies have been used for ages in the field of automotive safety, representing human bodies in car accidents. However, the rise of "Popular Mascots Franchising Off on Their Own" in the 1980s-90s led to even THEM splitting off and becoming their own thing! See, commercials showing them were a thing, but eventually some got made where they were actual CHARACTERS- talking dummies (guys in suits) who would then get crushed in car accidents leaving limbs falling off or whatever. These PSAs would end with "Don't you be a dummy, buckle your safety belts...and leave the crashing to us!".

This naturally led to the notion of Crash Test Dummies being kind of a household name, and this of course led to toys being released. These had "impact buttons" on their chests which, when pressed, sprung the toys' heads & limbs from their bodies. Naturally, pieces got lost and the toys themselves were kind of flimsy, and I don't remember much of the line, but there was a video game with the gimmick that you lost limbs when damaged, ultimately losing capabilities as you went on. Later characters just had "action features" like a spinning head or something. There were also vehicles to simulate car crashes- the line, in fact, seems mostly about selling these big vehicles, as they can be blown apart and reassembled. The original characters were Vince & Larry, doing health & safety stuff. They were discontinued when networks banned the original PSAs for fear of promotion Tyco's toys. This led to the creation of Slick & Spin- the new heroes.

Only one single animated feature came out- a TV special airing on Fox Kids in 1993- it's notable for being the first full-length TV cartoon made using computer graphics. In the show, they inhabit Dummyland, working as living crash test dummies. One Dummy has his head severed when the professor Dr. Zub's "uncrashable" prototype armor crashes- the evil "Junkman" puts his own head on Ted's body and uses the power of the armor (the "Torso 9000") and unleashes himself. He builds killing machines out of spare parts in a junkyard, necessitating the heroes Slick & Spin arriving to help.

In 1998, Mattel purchased Tyco and revived the Crash Dummies line as part of their Hot Wheels brand, using Crash, Crunch, Splice and Gyro as characters. This quickly failed, however. Another attempt was made in 2004, but some animated shorts and the toys also vanished soon.

There was also an RPG for The Pirates of the Dark Water. I ran into it when trying to answer an S&SF question about what the remaining Treasures were (as far as I could determine, they were not yet defined).

Aha! StarCom: the US Space Force was the toy line I was trying to recall Grandmama giving me that no one else had heard of at the time.
StarCom: The U.S. Space Force was a 1986 action figure and vehicle toyline by Connecticut-based toymaker Coleco. The toyline was supported by a 13 episode half-season of a cartoon by DIC, which was co-developed with NASA's Young Astronaut Council. Despite incredibly complex engineering providing for a wide range of play features, the line floundered in the cutthroat market of 1980s toy advertising, resulting in many unique sets being sold only in Canada and Europe after 1987. Coleco's failure to launch a new hit toyline after the loss of their electronics division in 1985 resulted in the company' bankruptcy and subsequent purchase by Mattel. Mattel continued to produce and release StarCom for the European market until 1990, albeit in very small numbers.

At the heart of this near-future sci-fi toyline were two primary design features: Magna Lock and Power Deploy. All of the 2-inch action figures featured permanent magnets embedded into the soles of their boots, allowing them to stick to metal plates attached to vehicles and playsets. The vehicles and playsets also featured magnets, often on the bottom of aircraft or cranes to lift other vehicles. The Power Deploy feature of vehicles and playsets involved spring-loaded or motorized transformations, often with a sort of mechanical resistor that produced a distinct whirr noise as components slowly rotated into place. The clockwork motor and resistor mechanisms were purportedly developed by Japanese toymaker Tomy, who featured wind-up motors heavily in their popular Zoids line. While some features were simply spring loaded and popped open, the whirring motors and resistors gave an impression of the weight and power of a real-life machine. The Power Deploy features of most smaller vehicles involved them converting into a portable "pod" of a standard size and shape, each with a metal plate on the top center for magnetic lifting. These pods could then be fit into compartments on larger vehicles orstacked with magnets.

The line portrays two factions: the evil Shadow Force Starmada with its Robot Drones, and the heroic StarCom, divided into the service branches of Astro Marines, Star Wing, and Starbase Command. All figures and vehicles bear a corresponding branch logo: crossed rifles in an orange roundel for Astro Marines, an eagle in a blue roundel for Star Wing, and an eight-pointed star in a blue roundel for Starbase Command. The first two waves of vehicles (1986 and 1987) included unique pilot or driver figures, and additional figures were released on blister pack cards with weapons and backpacks. Later vehicles sold in the UK and Europe did not have exclusive drivers, but were sometimes packed with a random figure selected from the carded assortment. The figures were highly detailed for their small size, with ornate tampograph decoration on the chest, head, and arms, unique face molds, and seven points of articulation. Most figures (excluding robot drones) included a small pivoting visor that clipped over the helmet.

Unfortunately, all but the first two waves (those released in the US) are quite rare. Furthermore, many of the sets feature white plastics that rapidly yellow with age and UV exposure, and the tiny gears in the Power Deploy units crack or slip easily from rough or even normal play and use. Those samples that remain are valued by collectors for their clever design and intricate and realistic decoration. Despite comparisons to Kenner's MASK , few toylines have ever achieved the level of interchangeable play features demonstrated on StarCom.
I had either the Laser R.A.T. or the M-6 Railgunner.

I had a bunch of StarCom stuff. It was good quality, the magnets and deploy features were fun and it had a very good look. I mean, this is a seriously badass spaceship.
