Total: Abilities: 20 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 40 / Defenses: 10 (79)

-Tatiana Caban debuted in the forgotten NYX book in 2004, and was a girl who had the mutant power to control animals- uncontrolled, this power caused her pet bird to fly at a man her mother was dating at the time. After bringing an injured dog to the vet, she found she could both hear things from far away, and transform into a dog-like creature herself! This was, of course, her mutant power- transformation after touching the blood of another creature. She was attacked by a mob of people, and was forced to kill an alley cat to defend herself- using its blood to transform her into a cat-creature. She was calmed down by X-23 (then a very new character), who brought Tatiana into her new group of friends- she soon abandoned her mother (who was now sleeping with the guy she was dating, and arguing with Tatiana when she caught them in bed together). As part of this group, they were confronted by the pimp Zebra Daddy (the existence of this character remains the most hilarious and embarassing thing about X-23's backstory), but X-23 killed him. Tatiana then pretty well disappeared and never mattered again. She is not in any issues of X-23's work I've read since then.

-Tatiana had the power to adopt powers similar to any animal whose blood she touched- this turned her into a humanoid dog or cat-like creature. This also caused animals to instinctively hate her, which greatly upset her, as she was an animal-lover with a collection of strays.

I don’t much care for Tolkien, unfortunately, so I never gave it much thought.

Eheh. Eheh-heh-heh-heh.

And I bet he'd claim he'd never even heard of Exalted, wouldn't he.

-Bobby Soul was a mutant who took care of his autistic brother Lil' Bro- he was a late-comer in the NYX series, and had the ability to possess others. When doing so, he could access people's thoughts and memories. Upon leaving someone's body, he would suffer from temporary memory loss- his memory gets worse each time he uses his powers, making him fear he would one day lose his memories permanently. In any case, he and his brother were the children of a prostitute, and were frequently mistreated by the men "she had to answer to"- it's implied that Bobby killed or maimed a man for raping Lil' Bro, then went on the run. He agreed to work for Zebra Daddy, the pimp who was after X-23, but lost his memory of how he got the money- it's suggested he might have killed a policeman, but this turned out to be an image projected of ZEBRA DADDY doing so. Bobby ultimately learned the truth, and when the pimp was killed by X-23, Bobby asked Kiden Nixon & Tatiana Caban to live with him and his brother.

-Bobby was a standard-issue Possession-based character, being able to possess one person at a time. Once, he deliberately possessed a pop star (possibly to act out that person's privileges?)- another time, he forced an aggressor to commit suicide.

Young Girl Spinoff to a Young Girl Character:
-*pinches bridge of nose* SIGHHHH... Yeah, they did it. They made a clone and spinoff of X-23, who herself is a clone and spinoff. Just accept it. So the age-old thing that happens in comics after a point is that if a hero is successful enough, they will eventually get a spinoff version. Marvel used to be relatively immune to this, as you didn't see hundreds of spinoffs and clones in the 1960s or '70s, but as John Byrne noted, once DC fans and writers started getting inserted into Marvel (that's his take, anyways), you suddenly saw an influx in She-Hulks, Ms. Marvels, etc., and now we have today, where the companies are largely indistinguishable on that front, and I think their biggest five heroes could EACH form an entire super-team around just their spinoff characters!

-So Gabrielle here is one of ten clones of Wolverine created by Alchemax Genetics, meant to serve as bodyguards on humanitarian missions. Lacking Laura's Healing Factor or claws, I dunno what the point is aside from super-senses. However, they were abused by their handlers, particularly Capt. Mooney (the head of security)- Gabrielle was the youngest of these "Sisters", and protected by the elders. Rendered immune to pain, Gabby was one of four survivors- six had died on missions or because of the nanites that caused the pain-immunity- and escaped with sisters Zelda, Bellona & X23_3PAR (yes, it's written like that), via the help of Kimura. Kimura then had them act as assassins, leaving Gabby disillusioned and wanting to leave. 3PAR went up against Laura "Wolverine II" Kinney, and committed suicide rather than be captured. This led Laura to the others, and she agreed to help them- Zelda was later killed by Mooney as the girls were cured of the nanites, and Bellona finally executed him. Bellona then left, leaving Gabby alone- this led to her being adopted on as a partner/family member to Laura, who kept her around. They adopted a pet wolverine named Jonathan and formed a trio.

Gabby the Sidekick:
-Gabby is accidentally impaled on the original Wolverine's claws, but it's discovered that she did in fact gain a Healing Factor. She later helped Laura break up a child trafficking ring, with Bellona herself being one fo the agents. After Bellona is arrested, Gabby takes on the name "Honey Badger" as a funny sidekick of sorts. She then gets roped into the "X-Men on Krakoa as Isolationists" thing- like most mutants, she is killed and resurrected, but by five X-Students working for the Shadow King. On and a couple years back she was renamed "Scout".

-So yeah, I dunno. Several writer switches being common these days make characters like this a REAL piece of trouble, as they can jump to and fro and from story to story rapidly, and have their entire personality rewritten (which is a problem these days for ANY comic character, much less a brand newbie). Having a younger dependent around is probably good for Laura as a character, at least, as it could force her to mature in some ways. As a youth who was shielded from the worst of the abuse the Sisters suffered, Gabby is more innocent and charming than most Clawed Mutants, at least. In fact, creator Tom Taylor indicates that each of the Sisters was meant to represent a part of Laura- Gabby represents the innocence that she lost, and the girl she could have been.

So it looks like ComicVine has changed most of their image links, and very suddenly, too. Which means I'll have to go through EVERYTHING and check to see if stuff is still active. It's mainly a small change to the URL so I can do it pretty quickly, but I just wanted everyone to know I'm aware of it and am fixing it, so nobody has to post in here repeatedly to remind me (which I think happened on the ATT many years ago, last time ComicVine did this).

For those wondering why I don't just download images separately and post them to an image-sharing thing myself, it's mostly just a lack of time in the moment, and the fact that I have THOUSANDS of builds, meaning it'd be impossible to sort through all the images properly (especially in SmugMug, which doesn't have "pages" anymore- just a huge mass of pics you have to scroll down).

Complications:
Relationship (Gabby)- The Sisters are all protective of their youngest sister, trying to maintain her innocence.
Enemy (Alchemax)- The Sisters were slaves to Alchemax, then realized that their lives were being shortened by the nanites that were making them immune to pain. Now they seek to kill their antagonists.

Total: Abilities: 72 / Skills: 42--21 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 5 / Defenses: 12 (122)

-So The Sisters honestly seem more like a "Sidekick Delivery System" than a batch of characters in their own right- they are a set of ten clones of Wolverine, just like X-23, meant to serve as agents of Alchemax Chemicals. Each was given a number, including Bellona (X23_1BEL), Zelda (X23_2ZEL), X23_3PAR, and Gabby (X23_4GAB). Rendered unable to feel pain, they are frequently abused by their bosses- two of the Sisters mysteriously die in their cells, implied to be the result of Alchemax wiping them out. The eldest would keep the youngest, Gabrielle, from getting the worst of the abuse, but when the girls discovered that the nanites that were dulling their pain censors were killing them, they rebelled and went on the run. X23_3PAR ultimately killed herself by leaping from the Eiffel Tower when Wolverine II (Laura Kinney, their "sister") was sent after the group for trying to kill Alchemax's boss's son.

-Laura eventually confronted Alchemax's director, and was herself confronted by Gabby, who reiterated her dead sister's insistence that Laura should be helping them, not obstructing them. Laura ultimately sides with the Sisters and saves their lives a few times. However, Zelda is soon killed by Captain Mooney, head of Alchemax Security. Alchemax was ultimately brought down, with Bellona executing Mooney- Bellona then left Gabby in Laura's care, realizing this was her little sister's best hope. Bellona would later resurface as part of a child trafficking ring, disturbing Gabby greatly.

-The Sisters are generic mercenaries with some enhanced senses I believe- PL 8-ish overall. Each had their own unique weapon.

The Sisters:
Image

BELLONA (X23_1BEL): Bellona used combat knives (Damage +1-2). She was the most violent and angry of the Sisters, and the only survivor other than Gabby. She teamed up with the villainous Kimura, leading her to hang out with other bad guys such as Roughouse. It's also revealed that she then has Adamantium claws as well.

Image

ZELDA (X23_2ZEL): Zelda used an assault rifle (Multiattack Blast 6). Zelda was the most pragmatic of the Sisters. She was ultimately fatally-wounded by Captain Mooney.
X23_3PAR: She had a sniper rifle (Blast 6- Extended Range 2) & pistol (Blast 4).
GABBY (X23_4GAB): Gabby used a MAC-10 at first, but dropped this when she lived with Laura.

Sentinel Squad O*N*E

SENTINEL SQUAD O*N*E
Created By:
Chris Claremont & Randy Green
First Appearance: Decimation: House of M - The Day After #1 (Jan. 2006)
Role: Short-Lived Allies

-Okay, this is an odd little eye-blink in the history of the X-Books- they only lasted a couple of years. They came about as a misguided government attempt to make the Sentinels into figures for good- Valerie Cooper suggested a new type of Sentinel that would be a piloted mecha. Tony Stark developed the models and James Rhodes instructed the pilots. Their first mission ended up in failure when the man they were guarding was hurt anyways- another group was sent to the Savage Land to stop the Savage Land Mutates- most of the squads were lost due to attacking head on.

-Finally, a "O*N*E" squad was formed by the President due to the events of M-Day leaving only 198 mutants remaining on Earth. They were sent to Xavier's Institute to guard the remaining mutants... an act that pissed off the X-Men, given that the Sentinels were like the physical manifestation of all mankind's hatred of mutants. It'd be like having Nazi soldiers guarding a synagogue. And of course they started jobbing again anyhow- one pilot was killed when Vulcan attacked the X-Men. Apocalypse destroyed most of them, and so "Crazy Train" and "War Machine" prototypes were activated. Nimrod later deactivated most of them. They also jobbed to Hellion, Exodus and whomever else happened to show up, somehow losing to like ELEVEN PEOPLE in two f*ckin' years of operation in real-time! Like, that is INSANE! Every pilot apparently died!

-There were a handful of named pilots: Alexander Lexington was a de-powered mutant. Bulletproof Briggs was an anti-mutant bigot who nonetheless followed orders and defended them- he was the one killed by Vulcan. Rajani Dhama was a technician who often piloted a "recon" suit.

-The Sentinel Squad suits themselves had varied powers, similar to Sentinels, but like... apparently super-jobbery since they never once won a fight. Capture nets, snares, etc. The Recon suits had stealth and sensor capabilities. Emil "Professor" Winston was a technical genius. Jeremiah "Meld" Muldoon was a green-skinned mutant able to alter metallic structures, making him a useful tech- he actually survived the Squad's destruction... and was then promptly murdered during Necrosha by Senyaka of Selene's goons. Randall "Stilts" Nixon died in the Savage Land. General Demetrius Lazer is a mutant-hater in secret, and plans on killing the remaining mutants- he is captured and interrogated/tortured by Val Cooper, then executed by his ally Johnny Dee, who realizes Lazer's about to give up their mission.

Johnny Dee

Post by Jabroniville »

Image
Image

JOHNNY DEE
Created By:
David Hine & Allen Martinez
First Appearance: Son of M #1 (Dec. 2005)
Role: Mind Controller

-UGH. I hate it when characters come in with potentially interesting ideas, but stupid names like this. Who's ever going to want to read a comic about "Johnny Dee" or buy a toy with that name? He debuted after "M-Day", being one of the undiscovered mutants who retained his powers- octopus-like tentacles sticking out of his chest that produced "Voodoo Dolls" he could control. He lived in "Mutant Town" and was about to be killed by mutant-hating thugs when he was rescued by Spider-Man- he then moved to the Xavier Institute for his own protection. He and Magma shared some stories, and he found himself falling for her- she found him cute but admitted she was grossed out by his powers. He then decided to use his powers to control her mind- when he was discovered by a guy named Jazz, he killed the man, then is ordered by Lazer, the head of the Sentinel Squad O*N*E to use Magma to kill a guy named Mr. M, who was investigating the mutants.

-Following that, Johnny revealed that the creature in his chest is actually separate from him... at least according to Johnny, who doesn't even consider himself a mutant (he notably seems to hate his very nature). He still works for Lazer, but when Lazer is interrogated by Val Cooper and nearly gives up their plan to trap the 198 mutants, Johnny snaps the neck of a "Lazer" voodoo doll, killing the man. Johnny is nonetheless arrested and has never reappeared. All in all, he was in comics for only a single year, and was written off by his own creators, so he left virtually zero impact.

-So Johnny's power is that if he touches someone or part of their DNA (like hair), he can make a voodoo doll of them via the octopus-thing in his chest. He can either control their minds, read their minds, or injure the "doll", hurting the person. So imagine an Extended Sense effect and Perception-Ranged Damage effect combined (like Detect People He's Touched, then Perception Damage), as he killed Lazer from a considerable distance away. This makes him a dangerous "Bathroom Psychic" type, but still very vulnerable to damage.

Motivation (ummm...)- Mister M just kinda does stuff while waxing philosophic about things needing to evolve.
Reputation (Dangerous)- Mister M has vast powers yet such a strange personality with a disregard for human life that is very concerning. Multiple people are keeping a close watch of him.

Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 152 / Defenses: 14 (228)

-I know absolutely nothing of this "David Hine" character, but apparently he wrote some of the X-Books for a little bit circa Civil War. He created Mister M, this random "Omega-Level Mutant" with a black suit & hat that did allllll sorts of stuff. He was in the District X book (about a "Mutant Town" policed by Bishop) and was this reclusive drunk who kept to himself, but decided to destroy the sickness and corruption of Mutant Town by destroying it. He apparently successfully does so, but it's revealed that it was an illusion cast by one of Bishop's allies, and Bishop himself had absorbed the energy output. Mister M then apparently became a force for good, helping people out. A hit was put out on his life, and he nearly died, but the book didn't elaborate on it.

-Mister M was then brought back by his creators for their NEXT thing, involving the "198" mutants hanging out as Xavier's. He simply walked to Xavier's one day and joined up, using his powers in a variety of ways (restoring one girl's hair after mutant-haters had cut it off, or creating a dinosaur)- he's seen as nice, but the X-Men are "leery" of his obviously huge "can do whatever he wants" powers. He then discovers that the mutants have all had tracking chips placed in them, and deactivates them, saying he's going to leave and anyone is free to join him. he forms a small group (Lorelei, Erg, Sack and a couple other doofuses) and peaceful attempts at reconciliation fail when Erg is controlled into setting off a fight with the X-Men that Mister M soon stops using his force fields. At this point, Johnny Dee targets him- the face in Johnny's chest declares Mister M to be a threat. Mister M has a band of loyal followers, but Johnny mind-controls Leech into de-powering him, then Magma into burning him alive. And just like that, this potential time-bomb of a character is summarily written out.

-Honestly, the character is truly weird, and seems like a writer given a lot of freedom to do whatever he wanted just created this enigmatic, potentially-lethal man. The whole "attempted to kill everyone" story seems hilariously glossed-over just reading his bios, and the man seems exceptionally dangerous and unpredictable more due to sloppy writing and "faux-intellectualism" than anything (he repeatedly comments about things needing to "evolve", turning a Pteranodon he creates into butterflies while waxing philosophic). In short, it reads like Hine did shitloads of drugs and did whatever he wanted with his precious new character- notably, he is the only person to work on the guy, carrying him from book to book to book from 2004 to 2006, when Mister M is killed.

-Mister M has Molecule Man-like abilities to just create things, and can restructure all matter from the looks of things- he helps someone heal from bullet wounds, can blow up an entire city, etc. He can become super-strong, intangible, control energy, control MINDS, and more- he basically has "Every Power Ever".

Re: Jab’s Builds! (Triumvirate of Terror! NYX! Honey Badger!)

Post by Jabroniville »

LOL as I post Mister M in my index and go "... why is there a Mister M already here?".
Turns out I BUILT HIM already, but it was way back in 2017, so I forgot about it. Yet that version has an actual build, but a pretty short "I obviously didn't read the whole Marvunapp page" bio, while my current one is 4-5 paragraphs long and contains NO build because I was like "they just said He Has Lots And Lots of Powers- that's a waste of time to build".

PS you can really tell when I hit my level of "this character is too minor to build" because I just stopped when it came to people with vague or dumb power descriptions, who didn't appear very much. I REALLY dislike doing "Blind Builds" if I have no idea about a character. So you get odd things where I accidentally write two bios for a character- one of which has little detail yet a whole profile of stats, and another with a huge, detailed description but no build because "Fuck this guy".

Mister M is even worse, because he has come back. In the current _____ of X storylines, it's revealed that he went to Otherworld (that magic-filled place that Claremont used to love) and took over a province, naming it after himself, but keeping all the inhabitants safe from outside danger. Then he gets found in "Swords of X" (a massive waste of time), and then sits around and does nothing. Seriously, at one point Magneto went to this omega-level mutant and said "hey, we're terraforming Mars, you want to help?" and Mister M apparently went "nope."

So...they went to all the effort of bringing him back just to have him do nothing.

Peter David & Jim Fern
First Appearance: X-Factor #79
Role: Forgotten Villain
Group Affiliations: N/A

-Rhapsody is a little-seen side-character from Peter David's X-Factor- she was a teacher until her mutant power manifested at age 20 (VERY late by mutant standards), turning her light blue and giving her the powers to influence others' emotions while playing music. She was fired when parents complained about a mutant teaching their kids. She attempted to use her powers to convince the head of the school board not to fire her, but he died of a heart attack brought on by the ecstasy her "happiness" powers gave him. She fled the police, who then sent X-Factor after her. She mind-controlled Jamie Madrox with her flute-playing, but he became angry upon hearing that she had accidentally killed the school board guy- I guess he wasn't in a forgiving mood. Seems like her story was mostly told to do a one-off "Being a mutant sucks/not everyone who is targeted by X-Factor is guilty" story. She largely disappeared, but has recently showed up in the background of a Marauders comic, playing for the members of the Hellfire Club.

-Rhapsody had the power to create hallucinations, control minds, and force emotions on others, but only while playing music.

SPITE
Created By:
John Francis Moore & Steve Epting
First Appearance: X-Men Unlimited #12 (Sept. 1996)
Role: Suddenly-Introduced Sibling, Nightmare's Sister

-haha, okay, so apparently D’Spayre has a sister we've never heard about, and never really showed up again! Weird AND stupid! She debuted in X-Men Unlimited (a book that replaced the "Annuals", ie. "Filler stories by writers we don't care about"). She fought her brother a thousand years ago, and was banished to Cyttorak's realm, where she became his servant. When Onslaught sent the Juggernaut to the same realm, she was instructed to bring him to her master. However, she betrayed him and was seemingly eaten by Cyttorak. The next year in a Juggernaut one-off, she showed up in New Mexico, convincing Juggernaut to help her fight D'Spayre to swipe some of her brother's "Magical Reserves". The battle reinvigorated Juggy's fading powers (he was emboldened upon hearing Spite's tale of sibling rivalry, comparing it to his own), and a gleeful, flirtatious Spite kissed him before flying away. Two appearances in seven months, and she has never appeared again, despite many D’Spayre appearances since.

-Spite is a demon of vague power, able to cast illusions.
