"BATTLIN'" JACK MURDOCK (Jonathan Murdock, aka The Red Devil)
Created By:
Stan Lee & Bill Everett
First Appearance: Daredevil #1 (April 1964)
Role: Death-By-Origin-Story
Group Affiliations: None
PL 6 (50)
STRENGTH
3 STAMINA 4 AGILITY 3
FIGHTING 8 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE -1 AWARENESS 1 PRESENCE 1

Skills:
Athletics 2 (+5)
Deception 3 (+4)
Expertise (Streetwise) 4 (+3)
Intimidation 3 (+4)

Advantages:
Improved Critical (Unarmed), Improved Initiative

Powers:
"Pro Boxer" Strength-Damage +1 [1]

Offense:
Unarmed +8 (+4 Damage, DC 19)
Initiative +7

Defenses:
Dodge +3 (DC 13), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +4, Fortitude +5, Will +3

Complications:
Relationship (Matt Murdock- Son)- Jack wishes his son to follow a non-violent path through life, and to be more educated than Jack himself was.
Relationship (Maggie Murdock- Ex-Wife)- Jack's wife divorced him to join a convent- Matt was led to believe that she had died.
Responsibility (Temper)- Jack is an angry, physically-violent man, which makes him feel guilty. He desperately wants Matt to avoid becoming like him, and often struck his son following Matt's own schoolboy brawls. This part seems to have been ignored or retconned away.

Total: Abilities: 38 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 1 / Defenses: 3 (50)

-Jack Murdock is Matt's deceased father, a man who impressed upon his son the need for education and smarts. Jack himself was an uneducated palooka who wanted more for his boy, as was the dream of Maggie, Jack's wife and Matt's mother. He suffered financially while Matt was away at college, and participated in many illegal fights and crooked bouts- when asked to throw a fight against an up & coming rookie, Jack refused (knowing Matt, now blinded and making Jack even more devoted to his son, would be at the fight), and was murdered by the evil promoter in revenge. This set Matt off on his vigilante career.

-Jack has the stats of a mid-tier Boxer who can surprise you once in a while- given that comic book Martial Artists can hit the PL 8-10 level, a PL 6.5 guy is still very good, and about the top level of what a "real life" boxer would be. In a Comic Book Universe, Heavyweight Boxing Champions should probably hit the higher-echelons of Unarmed Combat anyways.

So after posting up Matt, I'm setting in to post his parents, Foggy and some Foggy-related characters- are all too important to Matt's origins to leave for later. Matt's love interests will wait a bit. I'll intersperse the '60s goofs with the '90s goofs to keep things interesting, lol.

Never really liked Daredevil as a comic. Man, and you thought Spider-Man's writers liked to make his life hell just for kicks (heck, Mark Waid even made clear that he became a DD writer just to have Matt have at least one comic arc that "didn't drove [Waid] to drink". I honestly agree).

You also gotta give it to Waid that (love him or hate him as an overall writer) that moment where Matt throws a billy club an inch away from a (temporal) sidekick of the Punisher's head and tells her that it's "a vomitive statement" (Narm... but then again, Matt's a lawyer. "Vomitive" is less censorable than "b-s" when you're standing inside of a courtroom) that she thinks only losing someone you love would make anybody decide to become driven to change the world. "It's an insult to every fireman, soldier and policeman". Probably one of Matt's best scenes, even if it is ironic considering how much hell he's endured up to that point (and that's long before such things as being thrown in jail on the SUSPICION of being Daredevil and being forced to allow himself to be beaten up by other inmates to throw the scent off).

Funny thing is that I like the live-action versions of Matt more. The Netflix show is second in my "fave Netflix shows" list ("Jessica Jones" is definite rock bottom, but it's because the series has a cast full of unrelentingly horrible people), really loved Matt's cameo in "No Way Home" and Vincent's return as Kingpin in "Hawkeye" and yeah, I even liked the Affleck version (prefer the director's cut, though).

MAGGIE GRACE (formerly Margaret Murdock)
Created By:
Frank Miller & David Mazzucchelli
First Appearance: Daredevil #229 (April 1986)
Role: Long-Lost Mother
Group Affiliations: None

-Frank Miller was responsible for a very significant chunk of what made Daredevil popular, so it's probably within his rights to call dibs on revamping DD's family life to include a long-lost mother. Jack Murdock being a single father was an important part of the Daredevil mythos, so this mysterious nun popping up and revealing herself to be Maggie Murdock was a heck of a surprise. This came about during the arc where the Kingpin destroyed Matt's life, leaving him utterly broken. When Matt fell into her arms and she nursed him back to health, he felt the connection, and asked her point-blank if she was his mother. She denied it, but Matt's powers let him know she was lying, but not why. Miller never explained why she had left, leaving this a great mystery. Shockingly, this wasn't immediately spoiled by the next writer, or any of the '90s folks, until...

-Later, in Kevin Smith's Daredevil arc, Maggie returned. Naturally, Smith immediately had her reveal that she was Matt's mother, and she & Matt spoke at great length about her life and the nature of their faith (Smith, like the Murdocks, was raised Catholic), and helped Matt help a young girl who was believed to be the Antichrist thanks to the machinations of Mysterio. Maggie's backstory was given a careful explanation by Smith to absolve her of, well, ABANDONING HER FAMILY. Maggie suffered from post-partum depression badly when Matt was born, and was full of self-loathing and worry- this extended into paranoia that her husband was plotting against her, and culminated with a psychotic episodes where she attacked THE BABY. Maggie, desperate and afraid, left home to protect her family- she was taken in by a church, becoming a nun known as "Sister Margaret"- doctors and counseling eventually led to a return towards mental health. But she never returned to her family because she didn't want to take a chance of threatening them again. She asked for permission to be a part of her son's life from then on. But I don't know if anyone wrote about that- Mark Waid's run didn't involve her that I can recall.

-Maggie ends up a fairly strong-willed, religious woman with a good sense of medicine, but otherwise she's a bystander.

When Miller introduced the character of Sister Maggie during Born Again, he did not explain the circumstances under which she left Matt's father or became a nun. That explanation did not come until Mark Waid's run, building on some stuff in Kevin Smith's. This is the origin story given above. It's not the best explanation, but it's the only one we've got. I don't think Mr. Waid fully grasped the difficulties of this situation; basically a divorced Catholic woman would have to receive an annulment for the marriage to become a nun, and mental illness alone is not grounds for that.

Comics everybody.

1. They ask. They always ask. They also double check church records. Now, if she and Jack were married by a judge, and not in the Church, it is possible that the marriage wasn't recognised by the Church, but that's a big if.

2. Her mental situation being quite dire would also make becoming a nun difficult, as the various orders want their novitiates to be of clear mind and heart.

3. If a couple has had a child, their chances of getting an annulment go way down as well.

Comics everybody.

EAGLE FORCE:
Created By: Mego
Era: 1982

-So way, way back in 1982, at roughly the exact same time as G.I. Joe was being rebooted into Real American Hero, the Mego Corporation created "Eagle Force", which was pretty much the same thing. Capitalizing on Reagan-era patriotism and "we're not being pushed around anymore!", it featured a band of Captain Eagle's anti-terrorism forces against R.I.O.T. (Roving International Organization of Tyranny) under General Mamba (based on Idi Amin), and containing numerous other ethnic villains, like the Arabic terrorist Nemesis. Characters suspiciously match up with G.I. Joe at points, featuring names like Wild Bill and a female character like Scarlett (the pilot Goldie Hawk).

The line was more or less destroyed by Mego's shit luck. See, the company was doing pretty okay in the 1970s, but turned down the offer to produce toys for some no-name sci-fi movie. Upstart company Kenner decided to give this "Star Wars" thing a try and suddenly they were making hundreds of millions of dollars and Mego went bankrupt by late 1982, even though apparently the first sets of Eagle Force sold out in Target stores. As a new line, Eagle Force was quickly ignored and dropped, while only Mego's successful things carried on and were bought up by other companies.

Eagle Force featured the eyepatch-wearing Captain Eagle, Big Bro, The Cat, Harley, Kayo, Redwing, Sgt. Brown, Stryker, Turk, Wild Bill, Zapper and Goldie Hawk. The R.I.O.T. forces include General Mamba, Baron Von Chill, Beta Man (an arsonist), Nemesis the Saboteur, Savitar the Ninja, and a Shock Trooper figure. Figures were die-cast, meaning they were shiny and pretty heavy. There was a mountain base, a jet, two jeeps and two tanks, all based on existing products so no new molds had to be created.

Relationship (Rozalind Sharpe)- Foggy's birth-mother abandoned him as a child to pursue her own law career- he still followed her into law.

Total: Abilities: 16 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 1 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 3 (28)

Foggy Nelson- Butt-Monkey to Important Best Friend:
-Foggy Nelson was at first a bit of a tortured guy, torn between his love for Karen Page and his loyalty to Karen's beau, his best pal. He was also a bit of a pathetic figure- an easily-bullied fat guy who needed to be protected physically AND academically by Matt when the two were in college, as Matt also helped him study. However, he eventually turned into more of an "Everyman" pal to Matt, with his obesity and slothful behavior being played down over time and his true loyalty shown repeatedly. Generally, he gets caught up a lot in Matt's double life, and spent a long time in the dark about Matt being Daredevil- when he finally figured it out, he became a co-conspirator and the two became even better friends. His life has had its fair share of ups and downs, but he's arguably the best off out of all the people in Matt's social life... which is pretty sad when you think about it. I mean, he's been disbarred at least once and rebuilt a law firm up from the ashes like FIVE TIMES.

-So in the original 1960s books, Foggy is Matt's college pal- the two were roommates at Columbia, then Harvard, Matt always helping Foggy study. The two form a private practice just out of school, hiring secretary Karen Page, and so the Daredevil book immediately has its core trio. Naturally, both boys go ga-ga over her, but Foggy soon realizes that Karen loves Matt. With a bruised ego, Foggy attends a part where an old high school classmate strikes his fancy- this begins a long romance with Deborah Harris. Naturally, Debbie is only flirting with Foggy to manipulate him, and is the lover of a criminal that was luring Foggy into their fold. Foggy helps bring down Debbie and "The Organizer", but is heartbroken... and soon starts pining for Karen again.

Foggy's Parker-Ish Personal Life:
-Along the way, Foggy is always kept in the dark about Matt's double-life- Stan kept hard to the fact that identities must be SECRET for some of these people. Matt did all sorts of weird "Superdickery", including faking his death, having others wear his costume, and even inventing a FAKE BROTHER, "Mike Murdock", to justify various disappearances. Also, Foggy prefers corporate law, while Matt pressures him into taking on supervillains as clients. Eventually, Foggy begins dating Debbie when she finally gets out of jail- despite his reservations about what it could mean for his career (he's trying to be district attorney now) and his doubts as to her intentions. A schism develops between him & Matt over Matt's inability to help Foggy with his campaign, but Foggy wins the DA seat and the two make up.

-Later, Foggy loses re-election as DA owing to the Jester sabotaging him, and goes back into practice with Matt at a free clinic. And he even marries Debbie! However, the marriage is a short one, lasting only five years real-time- she is annoyed by his lack of ability at being a socialite like her, and cheats on him with Micah Synn, the brutish wildman. They attempt to reconcile, but the damage is ultimately too great. Matt once again focuses too much on his superheroics over his career and Franklin & Murdock closes- poor Foggy considers suicide for a time, but is shocked back to his senses after nearly dying when the Vulture & DD fight. Matt is later disbarred and disappears, and Foggy starts dating his ex, Glorianna O'Breen as the Kingpin secretly hires him on as an attorney via a puppet company. Glorianna dumps Foggy when he defends the company in some questionable trials (a boy is blinded by waste they've dumped), but he quits the job when he finds out the Kingpin runs it, and he gets Matt his legal license back.

Later Foggy Tales:
-Later, Foggy & Matt end up working for Rosalind Sharpe... a woman who turns out to be Foggy's BIRTH MOTHER, and the reason he got into law! Foggy at this point begins to date Liz Allan (the widow of Harry Osborn), but he's manipulated into having an affair by Mysterio in his attempt to ruin Matt Murdock's life. Sharpe cold-heartedly fires her own son for an obvious frame-up murder charge, and Matt quits the firm in disgust when she refuses to let him defend Foggy. Eventually, the two rebuild their practice, then close it (Matt is going nuts and joining The Hand at this point thanks to a demon possession; you know, the usual), then reopen it again- when Matt's secret identity is made (mostly) public, they start helping teach clients how to represent themselves in court so as not to taint their trials with that implicit bias. There's a fun bit showing their early days at college- Matt HATES his slovenly, noisy roommate, but attempts to help him when their professor attempts to boot Foggy from class on trumped-up charges. Though Matt can't stand being around Foggy, he knows the charges are bogus and so helps... and then learns that Foggy has skills of his own (Matt is to argue for Foggy's innocense in front of the class, but is stoned by the prof; it's Foggy who points out something Matt couldn't have known- that the man's handwriting hadn't changed in decades, despite him recovering from a stroke on one side of his body in that time- this reveals that the "notes" Foggy had "copied" were recent). Foggy nearly dies of cancer at one point, and later, when Matt finagles a way to make his identity secret once more (owing to the Purple Man's children and a special device), he becomes the only person aware that Matt is Daredevil again.

Foggy's Abilities:
-Despite having been assaulted by villains on a constant basis, Foggy has nothing in the way of Defenses. Despite that, he's a very good lawyer- close to Matt's equal, despite Matt's greater intelligence. And since Foggy ISN'T known to the public as a crimson-clad vigilante, he tends to carry a bit more authority in court.

I vaguely recall the name Goldie Hawk, sticking in my memory because of the clear reference to Goldie Hawn.

But, damn. I think Goldie Hawk may have the biggest rack I've ever seen on an action figure.

DEBORAH HARRIS
Created By:
Wally Wood & Bob Powell
First Appearance: Daredevil #10 (Oct. 1965)
Role: The Bad Girl, The Ex-Wife

Debbie Harris- "Catwoman" to Supporting Cast Mate:
-Deborah Harris goes WAY back, set up in 1965 as a bit of a tragic story for Foggy Nelson- she was a beautiful socialite that Foggy met at a party sponsored by a man who wanted Foggy to run for District Attorney. Foggy was taken by Debbie big-time, but it was eventually learned that she was manipulating him on behalf of the sponsor, who was in fact her lover, as well as a criminal. Both were arrested, leaving Foggy heartbroken, and he soon went back to pining after Karen Page. Curiously, the first issue was done by Wally Wood, and the second by Stan Lee. Stan brought her back three years later, having her released from prison, believing herself reformed- she repeatedly went after Foggy again, which left him hesitant. He ultimately tried to date her again, but she was believed DISINTEGRATED! However, this was the Exterminator and his "T-Ray" teleportation device, which had only left her floating in Limbo- when Daredevil himself was hit, he found her floating there and she was rescued.

-Debbie became a somewhat-reliable backgrounder and even got ENGAGED to Foggy around this time, and was someone Karen Page could confide in (I wonder if Stan was branching out the supporting cast by giving Karen an actual friend, too). Then Stan leaves the book and Roy Thomas takes over, giving a brief arc where she considers leaving Foggy so her criminal past won't hurt his career, and then she's suddenly dropped (while still Foggy's GF) for FORTY ISSUES until Steve Gerber remembers she's alive, then there's a year-long gap and later writers start using her a little bit. She's kidnapped by HYDRA once, freaks out when Foggy is targetted by baddies, and more, and ultimately they're married in a 1980 issue by Roger McKenzie & Frank Miller.

Debbie The Skank:
However, she's only in a few scattered issues here or there until Denny O'Neil takes over the book... at which point Debbie is now a GIANT NAG, harranguing Foggy for paying attention to Matt or not being a socialite like her. And O'Neil destroys the marriage by having her openly lust for the brutish savage Micah Synn- when he abruptly kisses her, she finds herself kissing back, then goes to meet him AGAIN, where the same thing happens. Even the Kingpin is annoyed by this, lol, all "You don't damage the sanctity of marriage!". She fawns over Synn when he is injured, ignoring Foggy, and even threatens to leave Foggy unless Synn is helped- ultimately, she pays for it in a humiliating manner to a mean-spirited degree, as O'Neil has Synn smack her around for attempting to form a relationship with him, then dress her up as a slave and make her work on his estate. She moans that she "should have been happy" with what she & Foggy had, and begs Foggy's forgiveness once she escapes.

-Then, like four issues of uncomfortable attempts to reconcile later (Foggy buries himself in his work to avoid it; he later "needs time to think things over"), Debbie files to separate. Then in FOUR MORE ISSUES, up she pops with some new beau- this rich-looking older dude named Carleton, in something that clearly makes Foggy feel bad- and she leaves comics. FOREVER.

-That is such a weirdly-fascinating little character- not one I've read much about until now. She starts off as a "Bad Girl Who Wants To Be Good"- a good old-fashioned "Dating Catwoman" arc, and then becomes a supporting character and even a friend to Karen Page. But later writers just forget about her, until Denny O'Neil seems to take out all his anger on everything mean a woman ever said to him out on this poor girl, turning her into first a conceited nag putting on airs about "society", then a horrid skank, abandoning her husband for a sexist, brutish savage- and then he spends several issues humiliating her and having her be enslaved. And then it ends with this "Aw shucks, poor Foggy" bit as he meets her new boyfriend. Like, this feels like flat-out character assassination, and I wonder what the letters pages were like around this time.

ROSALIND SHARPE
Created By:
Karl Kesel & Cary Nord
First Appearance: Daredevil #353 (June 1996)
Role: Manipulative Witch

-Rosalind Sharpe debuts in 1996 and is revealed to be Foggy Nelson's BIRTH MOTHER in a pretty odd twist. It's stated that she abandoned the family for her law career, but was nonetheless the inspiration for Foggy going into the same line of work. It's very quickly established what kind of lawyer she is, manipulating others to get what she wants. She took Foggy & Matt on as partners in her law firm- Matt initially refused, but she pulled him aside and insisted Foggy was "merely adequate" while Matt was the impressive one, threatening to cut Foggy loose unless Matt took her up on the offer. In short, she's a giant dragon lady- an emblem of "The Wrong Kind of Lawyer".

-Rosalind is almost Mallory Archer-esque in cutting jibes, being unusually smoking hot for an older broad, and threatening to give Foggy the boot unless Matt falls into line- she has them defend Mr. Hyde (Matt only agrees because Hyde IS innocent, and as Daredevil, captures the Eel, who confesses to the crime). Soon, her backstory is elaborated upon- she made her bones representing dangerous mobsters and wealthy drunk drivers, and covered her bases with blackmail against those very men when they threatened her. As sales were nosediving around this time, Daredevil was given a shot in the arm by putting Kevin Smith on writing; he promptly wrote Foggy being framed for murder. Rosalind demanded Matt not defend him, since it could hurt their firm; Matt, disgusted, naturally quit. A bit later, Foggy was a prosecuting attorney against Wilson Fisk, who hired ROSALIND to defend him- she successfully did so, but Fisk was shot afterwards. In her final appearance, years later (2006), she shows up at Foggy's funeral (his death was faked) blaming Matt.

-Turk was a funny Running Gag during the '70s- a stupid small-time crook who frequently did stupid things and tried to fight Daredevil. He was often beaten up and hung off of buildings for "street-level" information, and on two separate occasions stole a suit of Power Armor to kill DD, but is always beaten in humiliating fashion. He actually debuted in 1970 under Roy Thomas & Gene Colan, but is a one-off gang-leader- his gang is attempting to force a war veteran to join them, but the man's brother goes to Daredevil, who defeats them. Nine years later (!), the character is remembered by Frank Miller and revamped for his run.

-Early on, Turk steals the M.A.U.L.E.R. Armor and is beaten in seconds, and less than a year later, he swipes the Stilt-Man gear, with the original villain actually telling DD what the weakness of the suit is. His idocy is known to all- the Kingpin rejects him with the Stilt-Man gear, saying "It does not matter what armor or weapons you may have acquired. You are an idiot, Turk. The Kingpin does not employ idiots". He is repeatedly shaken down for info and humiliated during the course of this run, which continues on in Denny O'Neil's. But once he is confronted by regular ol' Matt Murdock (deranged from having his life ruined by the Kingpin during Born Again) while stealing charity money dressed as Santa, and nearly fatally-wounds a disoriented Murdock!

-Turk only appears sporadically during the '90s (Ann Nocenti notably does not use him at all), and typically maintains a job as either a small-timer or a minion of the Kingpin's (who presumably gets less picky about his employees when he's desperate). Humorously, in 2018's Infinity Countdown TURK of all people gets the Mind Gem (swiping it during a fight between Skrulls & monks over it), and uses it for personal gain, mind-controlling judges to give non-guilty verdicts on criminals, who then pay Turk money (that is such a "Turk" thing- gain a cosmic weapon and become a small-time crime-boss with it). This gets him recruited into the goddamn INFINITY WATCH, but Doctor Strange successfully persuades him to just give the thing over- the warning from Daredevil that he's playing in the "Criminal Big Leagues" seems to finally get through.

-Turk is a classic idiot, to the point where he's WEAKER than the traditional thug! Daredevil, with a broken leg, one-punched him while he wore the M.A.U.L.E.R. armor, effortlessly having dodged his attacks. Everyone knows he's a fool.

-The Blue Talon is a Japanese martial artist who broke his hands, and trained his hands to become deadly, super-hard weapons (aided by steel plates over his hands) in order to properly become an assassin. Rich guy/villain Damon Dran sent him after Daredevil after kidnapping The Black Widow, but The Black Panther disguised himself as Daredevil instead, and the Talon ruptures a gas main with his Super-Martial Arts Strike like a moron, and dies.

-Blue Talon is a one-off foe, and has a lethal strike for someone who generally only fights normal humans, but he's still just a '70s villain who only had a single appearance.
