Yes, actually. So, for the first 14 episodes of the original Kamen Rider, the lead actor, Hiroshi Fujioka, did all his own stunts, in and out of suit. While filming another motorcycle stunt, Fujioka broke his leg and had to leave the show to recover. After a few episodes of stock footage events, they introduced Kamen Rider 2, allowing them to continue the series. Once Fujioka recovered, he returned to the show, though he wouldn't take the lead role again for another 20-ish episodes, appearing every once in a while as a guest spot. After taking over again, Rider 2 would fulfill that same guest role, before they came together permanently as the Double Riders. A simple stunt gone wrong is the reason Kamen Rider has evolved into such a legacy. If there wasn't a second Rider, it's possible that the original series would've simply retreated into the background, just a footnote in the Japanese Fictional Zeitgeist.

haha, oh man, that's AWESOME! I kinda feel bad for the first actor since that probably cost him either some money or some notoriety... but that very continuation of the legacy you mention might have made him a more notable star overall as the "First Kamen Rider"!

Oh yeah, it is absolutely his most defining role. He's still coming back to it, 50 years later. Hell, his son is going to portray a younger version of himself in an upcoming Rider film. Now its not just a cultural legacy, its a family legacy.

Complications

Personality - Apollogeist is a suave, mysterious, well-suited badass.

Loyalty (G.O.D.) - Apollogeist is devoted to serving the Government of Darkness as their Chief of Security.

Responsibility (Chief of Security) - As G.O.D.'s Chief of Security, Apollogeist is charged with keeping the organization's Kaijin in line, and, when necessary, putting them down.

Rivalry (X-Rider) - Apollogeist has taken an interest in G.O.D.'s primary adversary, Kamen Rider X.

Background: Apollogeist, G.O.D's Killing Machine. After several months of failed operations, G.O.D's General Commander dispatched their Chief of Security to Japan, in an attempt to defeat their most troublesome foe: Keisuke Jin, the X-Rider. With his human form unknown to even G.O.D's cybernetic monsters, he would conduct surveillance on both G.O.D's operations and the X-Rider, learning as much as he could about his foe before interfering and almost defeating the X-Rider. While his efforts were not enough to stop the X-Rider from defeating G.O.D's monsters, they did leave Keisuke deeply worried. After watching G.O.D's monsters fail time and time again, even with his assistance, he decided to put the X-Rider down for good, challenging him to one last battle, which, while close, he did lose. Tricking Keisuke into accepting a handshake, he tried to bring him down with him via his implanted explosive. As protocol, this didn't work, leaving the X-Rider unharmed. G.O.D wasn't done with him yet, however, kidnapping two experts in cybernetics and biology to revive Apollogeist's somehow still-together corpse. This revived the Chief of Security as......

Additional Complications

Limited Lifespan- While Apollogeist's revival was successful, it wasn't permanent. Due to defective organs, Apollogeist was only projected to survive a month by the scientists who rebuilt him.

Background (cont.): After his revival, Apollogeist quickly made himself known to X-Rider, attacking him multiple times over the course of schemes like; attempting to overload Tokyo's electrical grid, turning people into cat-hybrids, or into snake people, and literally killing people, leaving their full skeletons outside of the base of this operation, and keeping their ghosts to haunt it. X-Rider foiled all of these of course, which led Apollogeist to devote himself to further training with his new enhancements, hoping to find a way to defeat him. While training, he noticed a slight decline in his skill levels over time; he was missing bullseyes more often than expected for him. Wanting answers, he broke into the home of the cyberneticist who helped revive him, where he learned that his revival was not permanent. The use of a few defective parts left him with a projected lifespan of one month. Wishing to end his battle with the X-Rider before that time was up, Apollogeist revived several monsters previously defeated by X-Rider to bumrush him, hoping that he would be overwhelmed enough to allow him to be defeated. This plan was, again, a failure, as these monsters, encountered early in the X-Rider's career, was now far behind him in terms of skill and power. He scrapped 2 of them in short order, and used the third, Achilles (G.O.D's monsters were all derived from Greek Mythology for the first half of the season) as a way into G.O.D's base. Apollogeist, not being a total putz, saw through their plan and blew Achilles apart before attacking X in a rage alongside 4 more revived monsters. X held his own, defeating the revived monsters and taking on Apollogeist one-on-one. Fed up with his inability to put this Rider down, Apollogeist turned into a fireball, attempting to run him down. X clashed this technique with an X-Kick, finally defeating the humiliated Killing Machine of G.O.D.

Notes: Apollogeist is a very capable warrior, easily on par with Kamen Rider X, and is probably only second to King Dark himself in terms of power on the villain's side of this conflict. He's also a notably better skillmonkey than Keisuke, who, while capable, isn't exactly a super-spy. I honestly can't tell how he ever lost to Keisuke, but he did. A lot. I think he still lives up to his reputation as a Killing Machine, though. I mean, LOOK AT HIM, that design is awesome.

Post by Jabroniville »

Yeah, that's a great "Black Knight" kind of design- I like the red helmet and themed weapons. "Apollogeist" is a great name, too- keeps the Greek theme while adding "Ghost" to it. I kinda like the looming spectre of death for him, and how he now fights to kill the hero as fast as possible.

Interesting how guys get revived so much in this show- is the "real life" reason so they can re-use expense parts and costumes they made?

Can't say for sure, but that sounds about right. Toku usually has a.....limited budget, to say the least. Its a miracle they can come up with such cool designs while working within that.

Complications

Personality - King Dark is a stereotypically evil, but somewhat lazy robotic overlord. He recovers quickly from failure, with another scheme at the ready at all times.

Responsibility (G.O.D.) - King Dark is the absolute leader of G.O.D. and does not take insubordination lightly.

Weakness (Power) - King Dark, despite his great strength, is actually running at minimal power. To achieve his true strength, he requires the RS Device, a device able to turn all matter into energy, which he would use to run rampant worldwide.

Weakness (Robot) - As a robot, King Dark is vulnerable to things like Electrical & Magnetic Effects.

Weakness (Internals) - King Dark has significant internal space, with traps, minions, and a full control center. This can be a potential vulnerability since he cannot fight off a potential breach easily.

Weakness (Dr. Noroi) - King Dark is, at the end of the day, a vessel for the true leader of G.O.D., the villainous Dr. Noroi, who stays inside the machine's head as its' controller. If Dr. Noroi is forcefully unplugged or killed, King Dark will not just cease function but immediately explode.

Background: King Dark, the Great Leader of G.O.D, so to speak. Emerging from the darkness following the defeat of Apollogeist by X-Rider, King Dark took to directing his minions personally, rather than through proxies like the G.O.D General Commander. Under his command, G.O.D undertook a mission to capture the 9 pieces of the blueprint to the 'RS' Device, a power system that converts all substances into energy, which, when implanted in King Dark, would provide him with the power to raze Japan, and possibly the world, to the ground. Of course, this mission was not undertaken without the interference of the X-Rider, who managed to keep several pieces away from the organization for quite some time. However, King Dark finally had his minions do something not stupid, and had them kidnap all of X's allies, ransoming their lives for the remaining pieces of the blueprint. While mostly successful, this plan was foiled at the last minute by the arrival of Kamen Rider 2 and Kamen Rider V3, who assisted X in rescuing his friends and reacquiring the blueprint pieces, finally leaving King Dark fed up, and causing him to emerge from his cave prematurely. Even without the RS Device, King Dark was massively powerful, walking through X's attempts to stop his advance towards Tokyo, leading him to dive into the robot's mouth and enter its structural system. Making his way into King Dark's brain, X discovered Dr. Noroi, an old friend of Keisuke's father, who wished to take the world with his intelligence. Though impeded by the last of G.O.D's monsters, Sasori Geronimo Jr. (After Apollogeist's final death, the monster theme turned to historical figures combined with animals), and a nearly-fatal wound through his heart, X managed to kill Dr. Noroi, leading to the self-destruction of King Dark, and the believed death of the X-Rider. He would appear rebuilt in Kamen Rider Spirits, and alternate reality versions would appear in Kamen Rider Decade, and throughout various Heisei Phase 2 movies, with an updated design.

Notes: King Dark is quite the powerhouse, especially for early Kamen Rider, but isn't so insanely overpowered to exceed PL 13. With high Strength, Toughness, and a +18 Blast, his attacks are more than capable of taking down the X-Rider, but he suffers from a great lean towards Effect over Accuracy, and has 4 (count em) 4 Weakness Complications, which is effectively the only method X had to defeat the big bastard. In short, don't fuck with the King of G.O.D.

This is a really great villain design and a fun concept. Basically a proto-Evil Rider villain who is one part superspy and one part dark knight. My only exposure to him was one of the superhero Taisen movies where I remember him tossing his shield at a good guy/good guy team who fired a beam weapon. There was a brief tug of war battle between the beam and the shield, then the shield blew up and Apollogeist got hit, killing him.

Also funny, but when I first read his name it looked like 'Apologist', making him sound like someone who went around apologizing for all the things G.O.D. did and then trying come up with weak justifications.

Complications

Personality - Warfare Soldiers are loyal, but slightly more savvy than previous mooks. Pretty sure they're just regular people, though, no magic clones or cyborgs here.

Notes: G.O.D's Warfare Soldiers are pretty similar to previous mooks; solid fighters, though still pretty much nothing compared to a transformed Kamen Rider. I considered boosting them up to a PL 6, as they had a bit better track record against the X-Rider than Shocker or Destron Combatants had against their enemies, but that may just chalk up to Keisuke being even more inexperienced and stupid than his predecessors (despite being a trained martial artist beforehand). I really like their costumes, they're kind of ridiculous, with the berets and capes, but I think its a fun look.

Dr. Noroi/G.O.D General Commander

Post by OwOMotaros »

Lastly, a little blurb about G.O.D's "leader", who has never appeared again in any capacity, since King Dark on his own is much cooler...

Image

Dr. Noroi

Background: Throughout the events of Kamen Rider X, G.O.D's Kaijin would receive their orders from a voice emanating through a series of random objects (statues, mostly). Referred to as "G.O.D's General Commander", this voice was only equaled in rank by Apollogeist himself. In the late stages of the battle between G.O.D and the X-Rider, the General Commander just, disappeared. Once the X-Rider infiltrated King Dark's body, he discovered in his head, the bizarre form of Dr. Noroi. The name rung a bell to Keisuke; Dr. Noroi was an old colleague of his father, with a reputation as a "Devil Scientist", who disappeared years before. Turns out he went and started a super-powered terrorist organization, hellbent on ruling the planet. Keisuke, with a bit of interruption by Sasori Geronimo Jr., who gave him a near-fatal wound in the process, drove his Ridol Whip through both the last of G.O.D's monsters, and the Devil Scientist, leading to King Dark's destruction, and the end of G.O.D.

Notes: Again, a Toku villain leader without any stats! Dr. Noroi has literally only appeared in X-centric media, and was only in that one finale. He'd presumably be a pretty competent scientist, with the skill to create King Dark, and at least a few of the G.O.D Kaijin. He doesn't really matter though, and him being the General Commander is only an assumption.

X's Allies

Post by OwOMotaros »

Oop, forgot to list X's allies. Again, no need for builds for these guys, just civilians existing.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Tobei Tachibana - Legendary Showa Era Mentor, now running a coffee house, see here.

Keitaro Jin - Keisuke's genius roboticist father, fatally wounded besides Keisuke for defying G.O.D. Keitaro, in his last moments, performed the surgery to transform Keisuke into the X-Rider, and providing him with a location in the Pacific that he should head to. Keisuke would discover an underwater headquarters there, with an artificial intelligence based on his father, who, for a short time, tried to assist Keisuke, before getting tired of his whining and self-destructing.

Ryoko Mizuki - Keitaro's assistant and Keisuke's fiancée, who was secretly working for G.O.D. She led to Keitaro's death and Keisuke's near death, and would keep tabs on Keisuke in his early days, leading to him pursuing her at every turn. At the end of the first arc of the show, she would be revealed as a double agent, working for Interpol, before being killed by G.O.D.

Kiriko Mizuki - Ryoko's twin, who would appear in random places and assist Keisuke in his early days. She was also revealed to be an Interpol agent, killed just before her sister after attempting to save her.

Chiko & Mako - Two girls who were roped into one of G.O.D's schemes, and had to be saved by Keisuke and Tachibana. Being especially thankful, they took up jobs at Tachibana's coffee house, and just stuck around till the end of the season, even witnessing X-Rider's final battle against King Dark.
