I dunno. She's been much more poorly used since her first story, that's true. But taking over for Matt as Daredevil (at least the idea and bits of it I see on the internet, as comics cost money and I am poor) struck me as kind of brilliant. Elektra, of all people. One of the most iconic ninja assassins of all time. Choosing to adhere to the moral code of Daredevil, and NOT as a redemption story. At least at first. Simply to prove she could. Sometimes comics have good ideas.

And so of course they're obviously going to run it into the ground, have a full cliched redemption arc where she learns the error of her ways and swears never to kill again, and in like three to five years some writer is gonna drag her Back to Basics (probably to torment DD again). Because comics never met a good idea it could leave alone and character growth is for suckers.

What kind of mother names her daughter "Elektra"? It would be like a father naming his son "Oedipus".

When spelled "Ilektra", it's a reasonably common Greek name.

The Origins Of The Hand- Revealed! Before This Was Dropped Entirely!:
-OKAY. So... these guys are a forgotten band of one-off "Elite Ninjas" created by one D.G. Chichester, a minor-league, forgotten Daredevil writer whose only other creations are the "System Crash" team and the Punisher foe "Leviathan". So like... one of those "Dark Age of Comics" losers that comes in and disappears without ever leaving a real mark on anything. The deal with these guys is they were supposed to be a sort of elite "Inner Circle" of The Hand, based around some kinda mystical sword. They were a multinational band, but none of them had any staying power, nor much credibility, even within their own debut story-arc. They appeared in seven issues of Daredevil and then four of an Elektra Limited Series, with their origins tied to that of The Hand... at least until the next guy came along and ignored them.

-The backstory of the Snakeroot was that some kindly monk had managed to forge a blade named "Sakki" that entrapped the "brutal nature of mankind" within a sword, hoping to cleanse men's spirits. However, said nature "rotted" the inside of the blade, which craved blood, and then the Snakeroot was founded, sacrificing innocents to the sword, using it as their symbol- it could also resurrect their number. The Snakeroot is said to have served as the progenitor of The Hand, or at least its inner circle- they take orders from "The Beast of The Hand", in any case. Snakeroot members were first seen stealing information on the "About Face" virus (which was a mutagenic virus to be set off by telepaths) and breaking Elektra's old ally John Garrett out of S.H.I.E.L.D. holding. A traitorous member was killed by Venom, who also wanted the virus (lemme guess- crossover advertised on the cover to boost sales?), but they used Garrett's memories of Elektra to infuse a corpse with her "energies", creating the shadow warrior Erynys (after "Erinyes"- the Furies of Greek Mythology).

The Snakeroot's Failed Mission:
-Deathlok side character Siege was sent against the Snakeroot to save Garrett, while Daredevil got involved- another member died stalling DD, and another died after giving up his former allies to give the heroes (now including Venom) information. Then MORBIUS shows up (also seeking the virus), and the heroes head to the Snakeroot base, but Erynys flees the battle with the true Elektra shows up. The remaining Snakeroot members torture Eddie Passim, the sole surviving psychic who knew about the About Face virus, but he sacrifices himself to kill another of their number, just when everyone finds the vial of it- Daredevil destroys it, then kills Erynys, thus stopping all the Snakeroot's plans.

-In a Daredevil Annual, the Snakeroot resurrect Shang-Chi foe Ghost-Maker to kill DD & Elektra, but he fails, dying in the process. Then, in Elektra: Root of Evil, the Snakeroot's leader Daito commits seppuku using the blade, and a new leader takes over. The suicide has tainted the blade, which now needs innocent blood- they hunt for three people, Elektra forming her own group to stop them. Two of them die quickly, however, followed by the other three in a huge battle that sees Elektra kill most of the remaining ninjas on two separate occasions (as the sword kept resurrecting them). Finally, she takes on Tekagi, their leader, slowly poisoning him with tree frog venom before skewering him with Sakki- the blade is corrupted completely by his own sinner's blood, and this finally renders the sword impotent, killing off the Snakeroot once and for all.

-The overall bio makes little sense, and the Marvunapp writer confesses the issues didn't, either- he just laid out everything that happened. This "Origin Story" for The Hand was completely ignored, and another was told in Elektra: The Hand- fewer writers, even in the early 2000s, were that caught up about continuity, especially continuity from a Daredevil run that everyone had just preferred not happened in the first place. So all of this is pretty well nonsense that never mattered again- most of the villains were so disposable they died in their first or second appearance.

Snakeroot Stats:
-The Snakeroot members are pretty weaksauce, but somewhat capable- most are easily-killed fighting PL 10 characters like Daredevil, Morbius & Elektra.

Snakeroot Members:

Image

BISENTO- PL 7 (125):
-Bisento was a swordsman who opposed Daredevil & Siege, but confessed to them that he actually opposed the Snakeroot's plans regarding the About Face virus- he told them where his gang was hidden, but was then slain by Stone, of The Chaste, for some reason.

Image

BUDO (Harry "TNT" Kenkoy)- PL 7 (135): INT +2, AWA +1, Expertise (Military) +8 [10]
-Harry was a Marine General who created the About Face virus, covering his tracks by killing everyone else responsible for its creation, but one man- Eddie Passim- escaped. He asked the Snakeroot for assistance in recapturing the now-lost virus, but was attacked- he impressed them when he killed one attacker, and they included him in their organization, naming him Budo ("military way"). He shared in the operations to capture Eddie and torture him to set off the virus, but was himself finally killed when Eddie used the last of his energy to fry Budo's mind.

Image

LORD DAITO: unknown skills
-The mysterious leader of the Snakeroot, Daito didn't participate in missions, but directed them: He ordered the creation of Erynys, search for the About Face virus, and the resurrection of Ghost-Maker. However, he committed seppuku (ritual suicide) for all of his failures- this ended up tainting Sakki, their sacred blade, via his impure blood.

Image

DOKA- PL 7 (138): Fire Blast 6 (Split) [13]
-Doka had been raised in an abusive household- he killed his family by burning down their villa. When he chased down Elektra, he was easily killed, and when resurrected, was killed once more. He could shoot fire by some unknown means.

Image

ENTEKI I- PL 7 (128): Bow & Arrow +4, Ranged Attack +3 [3]
-Enteki was an archer- when charged with aiding the abduction of Eddie Passim, he held off Daredevil by choking him with his bowstring. He was killed by Stone's sai for this, buying his allies enough time to escape.

Image

ENTEKI II- PL 7 (128): Bow & Arrow +4, Ranged Attack +3 [3]
-The son of the first Enteki, this one was upgraded and given his old name and position. He impressed his allies for holding off DD & Morbius (Daredevil's armor was immune to his arrows, and he had to save Morbius from them), but was killed by Elektra in her Limited Series.

Image

FERUZE- PL 7 (125):
-Feruze was a muscular black guy who used a flail- he had been rejected from "many fine schools" because of his race, joining the Snakeroot because they held no such restrictions. He was in the "killed twice by Elektra" crew.

Image

GENKOTSU- PL 7 (130): Expertise (Religion) +6, Persuasion +4 [5]
-A former holy man, Genkotsu was nonetheless the chief torture of the Snakeroot. He also led in the mystical ceremony that formed Erynys. He tortured Eddie Passim for information on the About Face virus as well. He was killed by Elektra in her Limited Series, but resurrected- he was then maimed when she drove a truck into him, shattering his lower body. Crying that he couldn't feel his legs, he was told by Lord Tekagi to "die there in the dirt", which he presumably did.

Image

OSAKU (Karla)- PL 7 (128): Russian Military +6 [3]
-A Russian woman, Karla was descended from the deposed royal family. Her backstory was that she was charged with the Soviets for recapturing the defecting Black Widow, but failed. Natasha even taunted her, saying nobody would respect her even if she'd succeeded- when her bosses cancelled the mission, she rejected that and quit. She joined the Snakeroot as "Osaku" and fought the Widow in a Daredevil Annual (Annuals were often used for such little side-stories), but again failed. In the Elektra Limited Series she hunts one of their three targets but is killed by Elektra. She is never resurrected.

Image

LOL this costume is halfway between "Not Bad" and "Way Too Much Superfluous '90s Shit on It".

LORD TEKAGI- PL 8 (139): ST +1, FIGHTING +1, INT +1, AWA +1, PRE +1, Dodge +2, Ninja +4 [14]
-Tekagi was Lord Daito's #2, and a former Hand member alongside Elektra- he had suspected her of planning to destroy them from within, and told her as much, but the two gave in to passions and slept together anyways (Elektra saying it was because she was lonely after leaving Matt Murdock). In the first "Snakeroot" arc, he was the field leader, leading the squads that captured John Garrett and Eddie Passim. In the Elektra Limited Series, he takes over from the suicided Daito, planning on renewing the blade's corrupted power via the blood of innocents. He kills one of the targets, defeating Elektra in the process, but foolishly leaves her alive, focused only on his mission- his allies suggest it's because he still had feelings for her. In any case, he & Elektra fight one final battle, but she cleverly covered her armor in tree frog venom- Tekagi slowly succumbs to it, eventually skewered by the Sakki blade, corrupting it forever.

Total: Abilities: 62 / Skills: 88--44 / Advantages: 40 / Powers: 1 / Defenses: 19 (166)

-Yes, there was a Mirror Image Villain for Elektra- just accept it. Appearing in only one story, Erynys was created by the Snakeroot, who wanted Elektra with her "darkness" intact- she had been since purified via her resurrection, and so the Snakeroot abducted agent John Garrett, who had mind-melded with Elektra before she encountered Daredevil, and still had that darkness intact. Erynys (an "Xtreme Kool Letterz" version of the Erinyes, or Furies, of Greek Mythology) was formed by imbuing this darkness into a corpse, wielding extra-jagged sais like she was one of The Magus's evil doppelgangers or something. Aaaaaaaaaand then she just stood around, doing absolutely nothing. Like, several issues of just standing there observing the Snakeroot, until the final fights, when she killed Stick (... this does not appear in any of Stick's other bios) and the Hellspawn (an actual Magus doppelganger- but of Daredevil) and is then "skewered" by Daredevil tossing her own sai at her- this destroyed Erynys, and transfers the darkness from her back into Elektra, corrupting her anew.

-Erynys is basically "Elektra, But More Evil" and is apparently still a lethal fighter. I figure her for about as good as Elektra might have been in the '90s, but she was still one-shotted by Daredevil.

Eddie Passim

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

EDDIE PASSIM
Created By:
D.G Chichester & Scott McDaniel
First Appearance: Daredevil #319 (Aug. 1993)
Role: Unfortunate Victim

-Eddie Passim was one of many psychics whose powers were used in the creation of the "About Face" virus by U.S. General Kenkoy. They were placed in a machine and gathered the world's secrets, but he used the time to fall in love with a fellow psychic named Theresa Bellweather, sharing a lifetime of memories before they were split up. Theresa was murdered by the brutal Kenkoy, an act which got him punched by subordinate officer Nick Fury- Passim swore revenge, but was too weak to act out his vengeance, and Kenkoy planned to use him to trigger the virus, which would warp thousands of minds. However, Passim escaped and hid the last surviving bit of the virus (the rest was destroyed), joining New York's thousands of homeless to hide. However, he is captured in modern times by Kenkoy, working with the Snakeroot, and tortured for information on the virus, which they intend to use. Ultimately, Eddie sacrifices himself to kill General Kenkoy himself.

-Eddie was a telepath who was mostly low-level, but could read minds in the area (giving him a bit of a danger sense) or project his thoughts and memories into others, which sometimes drove people a bit nuts.

-Lo and behold, there was ANOTHER "Infinity War Clone" that actually outlived that crossover- Hellspawn! He joins Spidey's "Doppelganger" as one of the few the creators actually took to and kept going. They are from the Dimension of Manifestations, taking the forms of various Earth heroes to assault and attempt to replace them. In what first seems like a "Shaggy Dog Story" pointing out the ridiculousness of the crossover, both Hellspawn and Calypso (Kraven's old girlfriend) are hunting Daredevil, and Calypso ensnares HELLSPAWN by mistake, just before he's about to leap upon his target. They fight for the duration of the issue while DD takes on another villain instead, Calypso finally bludgeoning Hellspawn into submission, at which point he disappears and she realizes her mistake.

-Later that year in a Daredevil Annual, Calypso resurrects the Zombie (Simon Garth) to do her bidding, then gets bored with him and decides to summon an opponent and make them fight- she accidentally summons Hellspawn again, and he defeats Zombie and runs off. At this point, Herdling stops writing and now it's D.G. Chichester, and Hellspawn ends up roped into the "Snakeroot/About Face Virus" story, as Daredevil sews a new black costume but is immediately attacked by Hellspawn, whom he's actually never met before. And it's here we find that he's actually INVISIBLE to DD's Radar Sense, meaning Matt can't find his opponent at all. Here, he's suddenly shown talking instead of growling.

-Matt manages to escape, but Hellspawn still hunts him and manages to beat him down since DD can't find him but for the occasional lucky shot and an "invisible force" lifting up another character. Finally someone suggests DD splatter some of his own blood on Hellspawn, and this works- DD soon scores some direct hits, then throws a molotov cocktail to set him ON FIRE, then beats him mercilessly until he leaves. He reappears four issues later as everyone hunts the "About Face Virus", Hellspawn hoping this will turn him from a Voodoo-created being into a real one. He flees again once Elektra stands in for DD (since she can see Hellspawn just fine), but when he arrives during the big fight, Matt wisely just feeds him the entire formula, as it doesn't really matter if Hellspawn becomes real or not compared to what everyone else wants it for. Elated at being granted like, Hellspawn doesn't realize he can also now die, and Erynys (an evil clone of Elektra) stabs him through the stomach, violently killing him. He morphs into an exact duplicate of Matt as he dies, and thus Matt buries him, successfully faking his own death for a time.

-Hellspawn is a semi-reasonable fighter, but doesn't even do that well despite being invisible to Daredevil. Elektra notably scares him off right away, and as soon as the advantage is lost, he's easily beaten by Erynys as well.

-One of the final pieces of the "Daredevil" puzzle was "just where in the Hell did he learn all this shit?". And so Frank Miller decided to be the one to answer that question, giving him a blinded, nasty mentor named Stick. "Blind Mentors" were probably a cliche even by THEN, but for comics this was kinda new so Stick came off as pretty epic, especially as his "cover" was that of this grizzled, scruffy-looking hobo. Miller's writing of Stick was AWESOME, making him equal parts wise, talented, and cruel, causing him to strike Matt Murdock every time he screwed something up or complained. When Matt lost his Radar Sense, he went to Stick to slap him back into shape- Stick again beat him every time he screwed up, and didn't even let him feel a bit of pride (DD hits a bullseye while blindfolded, and is all "Stick, I did it. I did--" "Anyone can do it once", forcing him to do it again).

-He warns Matt not to let Elektra back into his life, sensing the darkness in her soul- DD doesn't listen, and loses her anyways. He fought against The Hand, turned out to have formed a group of Ninja dudes called "The Chaste", and showed up a couple more times (showing some weird mystical powers in the process), before eventually sacrificing his life to stop numerous Hand assassins. This is presumably before every hero in comics could demolish 200 of them in one round. He and his student Shaft resorted to an ancient life-draining technique, but it resulted in both of their deaths- this was only two issues after the group's introduction, mind you, and so, like Elektra, Stick was only around for about a year before he was killed off.

-Years later, in Daredevil: Ninja, The Hand & Chaste both chase after a newborn said to be the reincarnation of Stick- Daredevil reluctantly aids the Chaste against the Hand. Much, much later, Stick is resurrected (no mention of the baby?) by The Collector for a new "Contest of Champions"- he manages to survive despite being vaporized once (the Maestro accidentally brings him back) and then forms a team team with Outlaw, Ares, Guillotine, and White Fox. For all his importance to Daredevil's universe, he's actually not interacted with his student all that much, to be honest.

-As to Stick's PL, I kind of had to guess a bit, as I've never really seen him fight- all I know is that he's a super-mystical martial arts mentor-type, can sneak up on FREAKING DAREDEVIL with ease, can K.O. him instantly with a pressure-point strike, and he was a legend in his own time, despite being super-old.

-Stick's agents, The Chaste, are actually a band of magically-powered white-clad ninjas, symbolizing their purity- Daredevil is among the few students of Stick without a mystical bent. They are meant to fight The Hand, but by their debut, only four remained- Stick, Stone, Shaft & Claw. They debuted only a year after Stick did, quickly following the death of Elektra, and two of their number (Shaft & Claw) died alongside Stick draining the life-forces of dozens of Hand ninjas sent to attack them. Nine years later, in 1991, D.G. Chichester reintroduced Stone, and brought in a handful more Chaste members- Star, Wing, Flame & Spear- the latter turned out to be evil and a mole on behalf of The Hand, and attacked. Daredevil knocked him out and then used his weapon to kill Izanami- a Hand revenant. In 2000, Daredevil: Ninja came out, written by Brian Michael Bendis- in it, Stone is a major character, alongside a new "Chaste" member, Trahn. The others do not reappear.

Chaste Members:

STONE: Stick's second-in-command. Can withstand any physical attack so long as he is aware of it in advance, but he was sent away by Stick, being told to take Daredevil & Black Widow away from the conflict. He then helped DD resurrect Elektra, purifying her spirit in the process- this act drained Stone so badly it was thought he had died. He reappeared later in Daredevil: Ninja, working alongside DD to save Stick's reincarnated infant form.

Image

SHAFT: Uses a bow & arrow. Shaft died along with Claw to slay tons of Hand ninjas.

Image

CLAW: Uses handheld metal blades similar to Wolverine's claws. He was killed in the mass fight against The Hand, leading to his allies killing themselves to stop the evil ninjas.

Image

SPEAR: Appears only once, in 1991- turned out to be a Hand "mole" and attacked, but was KO'd by Daredevil.

Image

STAR: Uses shuriken. Appears only once, in 1991.

Image

FLAME: Ninja with pyrokinesis. Appears only once, in 1991.

Image

WING: Has the power of levitation. Appears only once, in 1991, and was killed by Izanami, a Hand agent.

Image

TRAHN: A black-clad female with a really cool look, appearing only in Daredevil: Ninja. She arrives in New York to steal Stick's weapon from Matt Murdock's apartment, and helps the heroes defeat The Hand.

For the longest time, Doppelganger was the only "Infinity War Clone" I'd seen. What did the others look like? I know about that hillarious moment where the Cap doppelganger is just off-handedly dealt with, just brushing off the event.

Only a couple had a distinctive look (like Doppelganger and Hellspawn), most just looked like the originals but with a more 'evil' face (pointy teeth and ears) and/or had small spikes on their costumes.

Total: Abilities: 16 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 0 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 2 (30)

-Ben Urich was a neat little character in the Daredevil mythos- he not only added an extra name to the sometimes-slim Daily Bugle offices, but he was a classic GOOD REPORTER, in addition to fitting the blue-collar, grim world of Frank Miller's 1980s New York. In one of the better Twists in comic books, he uncovers the secret identity of Daredevil, and prepares to reveal it to the world (with a guaranteed Pulitzer)... only to refuse, because it would destroy Matt Murdock's life and career, and risk all of the good that Daredevil brings to the world. Instead, he becomes DD's close ally and confidante, sharing a part of Matt's life that few others can, while feeding him information. He gets several great bits, such as calling out the Kingpin's agent, a mayoral candidate, and is sued along with the Bugle. Even J. Jonah Jameson, typically an antagonist in comics at this point, backs him up bravely- "You want me to squash the story?" Ben asks. "... No. Just be sure. Very sure". Ultimately Ben is threatened with death by Elektra, but Daredevil blackmails the Kingpin and he gives up his man.

-Ben's nephew Phil becomes the center of the well-liked 1990s Green Goblin Limited Series, and continues to be a factor in both DD & Spider-Man's lives. Ben later became a character in the Front Line books circa Civil War, but they're considered junk (that's where Sally Floyd had her infamous put-down of Captain America, decrying him as "irrelevant" because he didn't watch YouTube or Nascar)- despite that, he's actually in a LOT of major stories around this time, probably because he's actually Marvel's pre-eminent news reporter (I mean, who else is there? Jonah runs the joint and Parker's just a photographer). Ben is ultimately fired by Jonah (who was secretly bankrolling Ben's invesitgative website) for not being neutral during the Civil War. Somehow, his wife dies during the course of Secret Invasion. He learns that Phil is the new Hobgoblin and has to deal with that, too. Eventually, Ben becomes central to the Spider-Woman book, teaming with Jessica Drew and the new Porcupine to investigate super-villains.

-Urich is one HELL of a reporter and an even better investigator, having proven the illicit activities of both Wilson Fisk and Norman Osborn, in addition to figuring out Daredevil's secret identity. This is a rare attribute in comics, where even INTELLIGENT people are unable to recognize their closest friends if they wear domino masks, and super-villains can't figure out how DNA evidence or constant supervision allow them to uncover alter-egos.
