Master Izo

MASTER IZO
Created By:
J.M. DeMatteis & Ron Wagner
First Appearance: Daredevil #112 (Dec. 2008)
Role: Retcon Character, Founder of the Chaste, Drunken Master
Group Affiliations: The Chaste

-Okay, this one confused me at first, because he was the founder but not the leader, but it turns out he's a Retcon Character introduced by J.M. DeMatteis in 2008. He was also a founder of The Hand, but quit because it was growing darker and more dangerous after the death of the leader (whose radar senses Izo had learned, blinding himself in the process). He had placed Black Tarantula in the Hand to destroy it from within, and also taught Lady Bullseye how to fight. He founded The Chaste to oppose them, but 55 years ago, he was thrown out by his own students owing to his drinking and gambling, which they found "disgusting and disgraceful". He was irked, in part because he felt the Chaste's strict rules would make them just like The Hand. He fakes his death to allow Daredevil to seemingly "kill" him, thus passing an initiation to become The Hand's new leader, but when DD truly grows darker and controlled by The Beast that controls The Hand, Izo helps.

-Izo is said to be an immortal over 500 years old, and has a radar sense much like Daredevil. His biggest feat seems to be easily defeating the Black Tarantula in combat.

Defenses:
Dodge +14 (DC 24), Parry +14 (DC 24), Toughness +3 (+4 D.Roll), Fortitude +6, Will +6

Complications:
Relationship (Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil)- They were together for a bit, then she tried to kill him. It's Matt Murdock- it happens alot.
Relationship (The Kingpin)- Wilson Fisk looks at her like a daughter (the dying wish of her father, a former ally The Kingpin murdered), but they have fought and tried to kill each other before.
Disabled (Deaf)- Maya cannot hear. She is dependent upon visual clues to do anything, and as such is helpless is total darkness, and she cannot take oral commands or communicate with thickly-masked individuals or those not facing her. Expect odd exceptions if the artist, writer and/or editor aren't paying attention to the position of people on-panel.
Power Loss (Photographic Reflexes)- Maya needs to actually see something performed before she can copy it. Though she has studied people like Daredevil, Bullseye & Hawkeye, mimicking their abilities, she hasn't seen everything under the sun, and something can still surprise her, or be beyond her grasp. Most mental Skills (Science, sheer knowledge) are still beyond her, for example.

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 70--35 / Advantages: 22 / Powers: 30 / Defenses: 16 (169)

Echo- Another Assassin Girlfriend of Matt's:
-Echo was created for David Mack's Daredevil- she's fairly interesting as a character, but is kind of hopelessly caught up in the zone of Daredevil Girlfriends, in that she's a crazy assassin at one point hired to kill him. DD's book is like that. Her powers are pretty unique in comics (though seem to be getting less so, as various others have shown with similar abilities by now), but sadly, the Taskmaster casts a large shadow over all of them, which makes her seem like a cheap female copy. The added bonus is that like DD, she's missing out on one total sense, hers being hearing. And that'll mess her up BAD, as a Visual Dazzle or Obscure effect will all but cripple her Perception checks.

-Echo was fooled by her foster-father, The Kingpin, into thinking that Daredevil murdered her father (it was actually Fisk, who cares for Maya as her dad's dying wish)- she was sent after Matt, but she fell in love with Matt Murdock even while Echo hunted Daredevil. She ultimately beat the hero by taking advantage of his weaknesses and engaging in a fight where his senses were useless, but spared him when she found out his secret identity. Eventually, she found out the truth- blinding Fisk in revenge. She flees the U.S. to do some soul-searching- by the time she returns, Matt has another girlfriend. After this, she oddly leaves Daredevil's life, and goes on to appear in other books.

Echo the Forgotten Avenger:
-Her Avengers run is particularly strange because it was never supposed to be hers to begin with- Daredevil was supposed to be the disguised "Ronin" character who mysteriously helped the Avengers, but the fans guessed it way too easily (since it's Bendis), and they swapped Echo into the position instead. It was a nice swerve, but they never really went anywhere with it- she is temporarily killed then rez'd as a Hand assassin until Dr. Strange rescues her soul, and then she was IMMEDIATELY pushed aside once the big Event Stories kept happening, and she actually flat-out left the team with zero fanfare after a point, and nobody's really missed her since. Like there's a bit in Avengers/Invaders where her deafness saves the day against D'Spayre since he doesn't affect her, but that's it- she later appeared briefly as a possible babysitter for Luke Cage's baby (with a gag about how people forgot she was an Avenger), but has shown up in Moon Knight as an ally to Marc Spector, helping him fight some West Coast gangsters. Apparently she was killed by Count Nefaria... and then "mysterious circumstances" led to her resurrection (ie. someone either forgot or was like "Yeah I'm back, lol").

-And then all of a sudden she's back as the new PHOENIX, having entered a tournament in Enter the Phoenix- she is soundly defeated by Namor in an underwater match to gain the Phoenix's blessing, but Echo's despair at losing and refusal to die draws the Phoenix to her, and she becomes its new host. Then she beats Namor's ass for the previous defeat and Jean Grey herself gives us the "Character Shilling" bit of congratulations, but also gives her advice on controlling its power. So ultimately, Echo is a VERY strange character- she has all the hallmarks of yet another "Signature Daredevil Bad Girl Assassin", then suddenly gets foisted onto the Avengers stuff despite not really fitting in with that book at all, then she messes about in background things until Bendis forgets about he... and then she's in Moon Knight and that writer stupidly kills her off and then she's casually back and doing other stuff.

Echo's Powers:
-Echo's an over-pointed PL 9, able to hang on her own with most of the elite martial artists out there. Her Reflex Memory is at a relatively low (but still very expensive) level, allowing her to "keep" some of the points to use the skills she's been shown using (Piano playing and dancing, mostly). Think of her as a Mini-Taskmaster in this fashion. Note that any of her seemingly-lower Skills (Acrobatics especially) are easily modified with up to 15 points' worth of boosts, and she can gain tons of Advantages as well. Variable Power doesn't even need a Limit to showcase this ability really, as you can sort of imagine her taking on nearly any ability. It's Continuous in Duration and requires a Move Action because she doesn't have to do much to utilize it, nor can it really be turned off.

People also tend to forget with Echo that since she's Deaf and read lips (a skill not every deaf person has, and one that's rather dependent upon having had some hearing at some point in one's life to recognize the shape the mouth makes for sounds), she needs to be facing people when they talk to her, unlike in that one panel above.

I'm a little annoyed that Echo is getting the push she is right now, since it's clearly because she is a minority woman with a disability, rather than a character worth the push (I actually think she's fine, but she shouldn't be the Phoenix). However, I thought it was pretty cool that they actually hired a minority woman with a disability to play Echo in the Hawkeye series...and then upped the ante by hiring an actress who was missing a leg also.

Meh, Echo does not impress me and I hate that she is Phoenix. But at least that will not last.

Yeah it’s the weirdest thing when I do these. I never look at the statline anymore, but I look at the bio and there’s always something super weird in the last five years, lol. Like Echo goes to Moon Knight for a couple years and I’d clearly set up for something there… then WHOOPS she’s the Phoenix! The past ten years especially has been such a random grab-bag of stuff. Very short arcs and a lot of writer power has led to some very odd things.

Yes, I expect a "return to basics" treatment for Echo given the recent, well-received portrayal in the Hawkeye Disney+ series (which WAS quite good), and a potential solo program.

All my best.

-Le Concierge is a funny one-off from WAY late in the 1990s, in a forgotten Daredevil run by Scott Lobdell of all people. The Kingpin had moved to Paris, where he attempted to build a new criminal empire there- he formed a new "Emissaries of Evil" out of Stilt-Man, Le Concierge, and some guy named "Synapse"- Concierge had been an assassin and was intrigued at getting in on the ground floor of a big criminal organization. However, when he tries to swipe the files of a woman investigating the Kingpin, he is confronted by Daredevil. Le Concierge quickly starts losing, and is finally KO'd after trying to take a woman hostage. Daredevil used Concierge's costume to infiltrate the Kingpin's hideout, then watched as the villain recovered while wearing DD's clothes and Kingpin knocked him out AGAIN, thinking it was his enemy. Daredevil beats the villains and wins the day. Le Concierge has never reappeared. Given that he took the name of an apartment or hotel-keeper, he's really weird.

-Le Concierge is just a minor-league Assassin-type build- nothing Daredevil can't handle quickly.

-Synapse was part of the Kingpin's new Emissaries of Evil in Paris, and had the power to zap people unconscious or steal their own memories- the Kingpin had him attack a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with knowledge of all the world's double-agents and deep-cover operatives, planning to auction off this knowledge, and Synapse's own skills. He is briefly KO'd by his own boss for laughing at a fat joke a prisoner made, and plans to get revenge by rewriting the Kingpin's memories, but Daredevil soon attacks. Synapse disappears with the Kingpin and is never seen again. It's never clear where his powers came from, and now the name belongs to one of the NuHumans.

Motivation (Greed)- Zoltan wanted to create a serum to allow him to make living wax statues, but instead it caused fear. Oh well- time to become a super-villain!

Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 24 / Defenses: 8 (97)

-Despite being a very minor-league name in comics history, there have been FOUR Mister Fears- all Daredevil villains. Zoltan Drago wanted to help his wax museum succeed by making his wax statues come to life- naturally, as a chemist, he felt he could TOTALLY DO THIS, but unfortunately all he did was create a Fear Serum. The obvious response was to become a masked super-villain. He made The Eel and Ox (of The Enforcers) his personal fear-slaves, and got beaten by Daredevil. He was later killed by Starr "Machinesmith" Saxon, who temporarily assumed the guise. Hilariously, this scene appears only in FLASHBACK, as Saxon offs him upon his release from prison. It's later revealed, via another flashback, that he revealed the location of his fear equipment to Larry Cranston, who becomes the third Mister Fear.

Complications:
Enemy (Daredevil)- Cranston has a specific hatred against Matt Murdock.

Total: Abilities: 54 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 24 / Defenses: 12 (110)

-Cranston was Matt Murdock's old classmate, but became his boss... and just decided to become the new Mister Fear when he overheard Starr Saxon kill Zoltan Drago, then die himself. He went nuts in his first appearance, jumping off a building thinking he was wearing a rocket pack. Ron Howard Voice: "He was not". He seemingly died. However, he suddenly popped up a a full twenty years later, working with the Enforcers, Insomnia, and the Eel to discredit Daredevil. Daredevil beat them and the writer left, so Cranston disappeared again.

-Mister Fear & the Enforcers reappeared making a drug that caused users to become psychotic and lose all fear of death- he tried to overthrow The Hood and even drive Matt's new wife, Milla Donovan, insane, resulting in her murdering an innocent man! He then killed the drug's designer in order to save himself- he was now the only person whose testimony could prevent Milla from getting the death penalty for the murder, sparing him vengeance from Daredevil. Cleverly, Cranston then made another chemical compound- one that made people worship him. This set him up as the "King" of the prison, surrounded by bodyguards and even saluted by prison guards. Later, during a King in Black arc, Cranston is among the villains recruited by Mayor Wilson Fisk to be part of the Thunderbolts. So this guy's actually had a bit of longevity- more of a schemer than a scientist, even if he is a minor-leaguer.

-Eight years after the one-off appearance and death of Mister Fear III, Larry Cranston, his nephew Alan Fagan became the FOURTH Mr. Fear, but became a Spider-Man villain instead of a Daredevil one. Unfortunately, having FOUR of these guys in total just led to a "Crimson Dynamo-ing" of the name, and he doesn't have a lot of cred, nor appearances. It didn't help that his daughter Shock had part of his face carved off while he was in jail, in order to create the serum that gave her powers- this was while he was a discarded character, so Shock was more or less a solo operative. Even while Mr. Fear III returned, Fagan became one of those Background Villains seen working for Crossfire or The Hood. Writers appear unaware or uninterested in the fact that both of the latter Mister Fears are active at the same time.

Complications:
Normal Identity (Ariel Fagan)- Shock will convert to human form without regular doses of the Fear Chemical derived from her father's skin. If given another dose of the chemical, she might change back. Ariel's normal stats are: STR 1, STA 2, AGI 2 and FIGHTING 4.

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 43 / Defenses: 9 (142)

-Shock is the daughter of one of the Mister Fears, Alan Fagan, growing up hating her dad for abandoning her mom. She became a street crook and hooker to pay the bills, and eventually had a chemical forged from her father's skin (which was taken in a rather nasty way- she paid inmates to cut him while in jail) that allowed her to turn into a freaky monster-lady with fear powers. She fought Daredevil, caused him some trouble, and then vanished once the Comic Book Crash came calling- she hasn't been seen in over a decade, and is known to me only because of her Series IV card (a LOT of forgotten "current" characters in that set, like I once said). Hell, she's only ever appeared in TWO COMICS.

-Shock is a fairly dangerous fighter (being stronger and tougher than Daredevil), but her key weapon is the fact that she excretes a nasty Always-There (Reaction) Chemical that scares the crap out of people or makes them crazy-angry.

Hey! Don't judge me! There aren't a lot of options out there when your Dad is a third rate villain!
