he was also responsible for the infamous hawkeye trick as he was the one who provided the WCA with the LETHAL poison they used to die and enter deaths realm to confront the grandmaster.

that collection of things and people and monsters and so on is an amazing story element. still one of my favorite Superman TAS stories where he and lobo were faced off with the collector alien who had the enormous zoo of last creatures

The Collector is great as well. While most of his stories are about him trying to collect something (usually someone) that doesn't want to be collected, there's a lot of fun other potential. Like the Brethren escaping or some part of his collection getting stolen, and the heroes have to help reclaim them. Or the heroes need something, and they either need to get it from him or he makes them go on a scavenger hunt for items to trade for what they need. So much potential.

agreed its also interesting as a plot because of the notion of WHAT this guys collected over the millenia. people may look at him and think oh hes wacky hes a horder

then he explains to them that the maguffin that was taken a small box no bigger then a smartphone can literally shut off the sun with a thought it was used by some ancient long dead civilization as a light switch. and that is one of the LEAST of his collections

that terrifying notion of ancient sentient viruses or nanite style robots who build and build or a creature like SCP 096 the shy guy, being in his collection can generate uncountable stories not the least of which is the question of whether tavon deliberately let the missing item go in order to reobtain IT AND something rarer

Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +8 (+DC 18), Toughness +5, Fortitude +10, Will +13

Complications:
Obsession (Astronomy)- The Astronomer has devoted his millennia-old existence to cataloguing the entire cosmos and all it's splendor- he rarely deals with individual beings.
Power Loss (Barren Worlds)- Though he wields incredible power, The Gardener cannot create something from nothing- without first seeding a world, or having plant material available to him, he has little power.

Total: Abilities: 70 / Skills: 68--34 / Advantages: 15 / Powers: 109 / Defenses: 24 (292)

-The Astronomer is a bit less of a recurring guy than his Brothers, but he's one of the smartest Elders. He's less of a powerhouse (a measly PL 12), but he's mastered a ton of alien technology, and he's the best planner- it was HIS schemes that allowed the Elders to confound and nearly-kill Galactus (they'd have succeeded if not for the Surfer & Nova), so that the Elders could be present for the destruction and rebirth of the universe. His plan nearly succeeds, but the In-Betweener soon turns on his Elder allies, forces Death to remove her protection from the group, then vaporizes Astronomer with two of his "brothers". He does not reappear at all until Annihilation a full seventeen years later, and has never mattered in a story again. He was created by Englehart entirely for that Silver Surfer arc, and nobody else felt like using him. His gimmick, being a celestial cartographer, is pretty damn close to The Runner & Explorer as well, making him a bit unnecessary. But as a schemer with less of a mental hangup making him easily manipulated (like The Grandmaster), he could easily be the most threatening of the group.

-The Fantastic Four book from the Marvel SAGA System outlines other powers for this guy, including Gravity, Light & Radiation Control, none of which are listed anywhere else, so I'm not sure where that comes from.

THE ARCHITECT (Real Name Unknown)
Created By:
Mark Gruenwald
First Appearance: Quasar #17 (Oct. 1990)
Role: Cosmic Builder
Group Affiliations: The Elders of the Universe

-The Architect is a strange one- a character that is only MENTIONED, but never SEEN. He is stated to have built The Runner a cosmic raceway in order to find out the fastest man on Earth. This is the famous "all the fast people" race issue of Quasar, which was won by a mysterious entrant, clearly meant to be Barry "The Flash" Allen running between time periods on Earth.

Complications:
Obsession (Destruction)- Offended by the existence of other life in the universe, The Obliterator is devoted to wiping it all out. He killed his entire world when he discovered his immortality. His obsession runs so deep that he will become despondent if his weapons are destroyed, as if they are a part of his being.

Total: Abilities: 86 / Skills: 50--25 / Advantages: 23 / Powers: 81 / Defenses: 15 (232)

-The Obliterator is what would happen if The Champion dropped all that pesky characterization and just became a one-note fighter... well, MORE of a one-note fighter. The Obliterator is one of those "I killed my entire race out of boredom" guys (yes, comics has more than one), having killed twenty BILLION people out of his desire to hunt and kill others. He also has a ridiculously-cartoonish appearance, barely even fitting in with the other characters in the Silver Surfer arc that introduced him- everyone else appears normal, while he has dot eyes and a giant round jawline like a comic strip character would. He fought The Silver Surfer, doing very well and seemingly killing Mantis! However, this proved to ENRAGE the Surfer, who did one of those "this is how powerful I REALLY am" things, kicking The Obliterator's ass and disintegrating his guns and sky-sled. He was trapped on the seemingly lifeless world so that he could never harm anyone else, despondent even after finding some sentients there.

-Several issues later, The Obliterator was found by some of his fellow Elders- he lamented that he was useless without his weapons. Incredulous, his allies pointed out he can simply MAKE MORE, which apparently hadn't occurred to him. He flew to Zenn-La, planning on exterminating the entire planet to hurt the Surfer- the two fought once more, proving to be evenly-matched. The Obliterator planned a super mega-blast, aimed at Zenn-La's core, promising to blow up the entire world, but the Surfer beat him with a feat of logic- such an act would kill everyone but the Surfer, making HIM an Elder of the Universe! Unable to deal with the man he hates being a "brother" Elder, The Obliterator gave up.

-The character doesn't appear for another six years, popping up in Quasar, suggesting that he be allowed to kill the newborn creature Origin. When this is disallowed, he and The Possessor attack Quasar & Thunderstrike for some reason, setting off a huge fight. Thunderstrike tricks Obliterator into blasting his partner, then Quasar uses Possessor's runestaff to stab The Obliterator, wrecking his armor and leaving him floating unconscious in space. This is his final appearance for over twenty years- the character ultimately barely HAS a character, but as a completely genocidal madman with power immense enough to fight the Silver Surfer, I'm a little shocked he's allowed to just fart around killing stuff. His ridiculous appearance, combining a cartoony face with hideous boxy armor, pretty much ensures most won't use him, though.

-The Obliterator is strong and tough as hell, but his gun-backpack thingie (Removable and not Easily Removable) is still his best weapon. And he's single-minded even by Elder standards, and no tactician at all.

The Runner Runs On:
-His most-notable appearance is probably in that Quasar issue where Mark Gruenwald had all of the fastest runners in the Marvel Universe engage in a race to find the fastest- The Runner ran the thing as a project. The winner ended up being a traveler in torn red clothing from another universe- this "Buried Alien" appeared shocked to even be there, then disappeared to await his fate in The Crisis on Infinite Earths. So the whole thing was basically Continuity Wank by Gru, then a final tribute to a DC character he wanted to write- good ol' Gru :). A running arc in Quasar sees Makkari (of the Eternals) attempt to surpass the Runner in speed. Eventually, he succeeds, and refuses a new contest, having "nothing left to prove".
This was my favorite appearance by The Runner (and, honestly, the only appearance that I knew of). I think I loved it, most of all, because of the appearance of Barry. :)

Complications:
Obsession (Contemplation)- Tath Ki has devoted himself to floating about the universe thinking about stuff. He knows a lot about everything.
Enemy (Skrull Impersonator)- A Skrull impersonated The Contemplator for years- basically taking part in all the "out of character" stories, like when Contemplator helped try to kill Galactus.
Responsibility (Pacifist)- Tath Ki avoids using his powers for violent ends.

Total: Abilities: 94 / Skills: 62--32 / Advantages: 19 / Powers: 167 / Defenses: 19 (331)

-The Contemplator is sorta like a mystical Space Buddha who goes around informing others about stuff, and he's generally one of the kindest and most-noble of the Elders of the Universe, rarely fighting anyone. He's helped out Captain America and Quasar on their quests- in his debut Tath Ki (calling himself "Mister Buda" in this Jack Kirby-created tale) took Cap on a journey throughout America's history to teach him about both his country and himself. In a subsequent appearance, he is shown helping out Jeffrey "Patriot" Mace in a Captain America Annual- the former Captain America replacement was dying of cancer, and The Contemplator (now named that and given a role in the Elders) helped him find peace before he died. Later, he was seen aiding Iron Fist in the early '90s.

-The Contemplator was part of the Elders' plan to kill Galactus in the 1980s Silver Surfer story-arc, but that was revealed to have been a Skrull, for reasons unknown- he attempted to gain protection from Captain Reptyl... who later tired of him and devoured his body (his decapitated head was left floating in space as a warning to others, but he was still alive, and later attempted to destroy Kree & Skrull alike). The false Contemplator attempts to steal Quasar's Quantum Bands, but he is captured by The Judicator (another Elder) and sent before the real one. Hilariously, this story seems to exist for no other reason than to wrap up that strange mix-up in the past, and the imposter is never seen again. The Contemplator disappears for at least ten years before acting as the "Guiding Hand" of the "Every Cap Ever" Limited Series, featuring all of the various Captain Americas throughout history (Cap, U.S. Agent, American Dream, etc.) to fight against Superia, who has replaced Cap in history.

-Power-wise, The Contemplator sort of combines an Elder of the Universe with Professor Xavier, becoming a PL 15 Cosmic Mind-Controller with extreme distance on his Mental Communication (basically Universe-wide), an assortment of Alt-Effects (including Psychokinesis, Boosting his physical abilities, Cosmic Blasts, and more). He goes PL 11-14 all over the place with varying attacks, and is one of the most powerful telepaths in the universe. It's a good thing he's a good guy, because that points-cost is NUTS, and dangerous on a heroic character.

GARA
Created By:
Sam Humphries & Ed McGuinness
First Appearance: Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men- Black Vortex Alpha #1 (Feb. 2015)
Role: Object-Seeker
Group Affiliations: The Elders of the Universe

-Gara appeared in the forgotten Black Vortex wannabe epic, as a member of an alien race (the Viscardi) that had repeatedly failed to leave their world twelve billion years ago. A Celestial, hearing her words pleading to let them embrace their ambition, created a "Black Vortex" of energy. Every Viscardi fought for its power, ultimately leading to their near-complete annihilation when she killed the last other member of her race, which left her claiming to be an Elder of the Universe. The Celestial refused to answer when she demanded to know if the Vortex was meant to kill all of them off. In modern times, she still hunts the Black Vortex, attempting to destroy it- she was caught between the Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men, but managed to capture the Vortex. She allowed Kitty Pryde to use it one last time, in order to save the planet Spartax from destruction. After that, Gara rested at the center of a star, guarding the Vortex in her arms.

THE PROMOTER (Xirena Awhina)
Created By:
Jeremy Whitley & Simone Buonfantino
First Appearance: Thor vs. Hulk- Champions of the Universe #1 (Sept. 2017)
Role: Cosmic Fight Promoter
Group Affiliations: The Elders of the Universe

-A pink-skinned, white-haired female in a stylish, pink shirt with frilly cuffs (overall with the skimpy bottoms it's "Magician's Assistant/Circus Host" in nature), The Promoter is shown as, well, a fight promoter, working with The Champion to help prove that he was still the strongest in the universe. She forced Thor & the Hulk to prove their worthiness of fighting her brother by stealing a powerful warrior's belt. I can't find much else about her- she's pretty new and only showed up in that one Limited Series, apparently vexing and manipulating the two heroes (Moonstone appears on the cover of the final issue, psychoanalyzing them, for example).

The Profiteer

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

What's hilarious is I swear a full 50% of Marvel's new female characters over the last five years are either "Black lady with her hair dyed" or "Girlboss in a Suit".

THE PROFITEER (Real Name Unknown)
Created By:
Dan Slott & R.B. Silva
First Appearance: Empyre- Fantastic Four #0 (Sept. 2020)
Role: Cosmic War Profiteer
Group Affiliations: The Elders of the Universe

-So in 2020 we finally had some new Elders of the Universe kicking around- the grey-skinned female is The Profiteer, who got wealthy selling weapons to both the Kree & Skrulls during the Kree/Skrull War. With this backstory, she pops up running what was the Grandmaster's casino, using a Skrull girl and a Kree boy to re-enact Kree/Skrull War conflicts so her patrons could vote on the outcomes. This was seen as brutally cruel, as the boy was badly injured during one fight and the Profiteer impatiently waited for him to heal- the Fantastic Four then arrived and worked to free them. The Torch & Thing conspired to have the two team up against them, thus putting them into an alliance, and then Franklin & Valeria "broke the bank" in the casino and essentially won it. The Profiteer was then offered a trade- her prize stars for the casino, and the FF left with the children, who were quickly adopted by Ben & Alicia. She later fought to win them back in return for analyzing some Cotati weapons (as the Cotati had been attacking both Kree & Skrulls), but Hulkling, the new leader of a combined Kree/Skrull alliance, dismissed her rights and sent her away.

-The Profiteer appears to be... well, a greedy version of the Grandmaster. She just kinda seemed to be there as an Excuse Plot to have Jo-Venn & N'Kalla show up and be adopted by Ben & Alicia, and has only appeared in two comics so far. She hasn't showcased any powers, but at least has a cool design, if a bit "generic" these days- these wild, ostentatious "high fashion" alien designs became super-common with the big "Inhumans Push" and have never let up- there's the Inhuman character with the dragon tail who has a very similar design, The Promoter isn't far from this, and I'm sure many modern books have more of it- the whole "Woman in a Suit" thing is almost a cliche of "a modern indie artist made this KEWL DESIGN!".

Complications:
Obsession (Games)- The Grandmaster is pretty much straight-up obsessed with gaming- ANY AND ALL GAMES are big things for him. He once risked (and lost) ultimate power because Hawkeye wanted to play a game of "Draw Straws". He will generally only do things if it involves a game of some kind.
Relationship (The Elders)- The Grandmaster takes the role of an Elder more seriously than the others- he is a leader of sorts. He once sacrificed his life (though it was part of a plan) for The Collector's.

-The Challenger was introduced in the backstory of a multi-part Avengers story involving every active team- it's said that he and En Dwi Gast were both Elders, both with near-identical obsessions! They had enjoyed gaming against each other for centuries- however, when they each decided to adopt nicknames based off of their obsession, this guy named himself "The Grandmaster", making Gast jealous, as there could be only one. Their rivalry turned less friendly with time, until Gast made the ultimate ploy- "The Greatest Game of All", in which the loser would be barred from existence until the end of reality! This guy lost, being immediately exiled despite his pleas, and Gast became "The Grandmaster". While a retcon of sorts, I don't mind this one, given how the Elders have like SIX BILLION years of past stories that could be told, and there are untold other Elders anyhow.

-The Challenger thus waited outside of reality for things to end... but then Secret Wars happened, and Reed Richards restored the multiverse- this left an opening for The Challenger to return, and he demanded a rematch with his old rival. The Challenger used the Black Order as champions, while The Grandmaster used the Lethal Legion- their dangerous contest led to three teams of Avengers getting involved. The Challenger resurrected the Hulk as his final champion, nearly winning, but the Avengers convinced him that he was being manipulated, and the Jade Giant smashed one of the objects won in the contest, costing The Challenger his victory. However, before he could be exiled, The Challenger watched as Gast's daughter Voyager, having been touched by the Avengers' bravery and heroism, confessed to deception- an enraged Challenger thus disintegrated The Grandmaster. The Hulk pounds the crap out of him, but he's punched into orbit, and The Challenger then fights off Wonder Man, Rogue & Falcon, until Voyager arrives with the other Avengers, renewing their flagging stamina and having the Scarlet Witch empower them with a spell. He is ultimately captured and forced by Voyager to watch the Avengers from his prison- she hopes that their heroics will inspire him as they did her. He promises to escape, but agrees to watch until then.

-The Challenger is physically near-identical to The Grandmaster and as tough as a Skyfather, and can fight off every Avenger at once, much like En Dwi Gast probably could. However, he's even more of a powerhouse, able to "Ring Out" The Hulk by punching him into orbit.
