It just seems Marvel is trying too hard these days to come up with new and interesting additional Elders. And failing! :?

I swear they haven't created a truly great one since the '80s. Even in the '90s they made a bunch of dumb ones. The Challenger's at least okay for a one-off Epic Story.

Total: Abilities: 136 / Skills: 104--52 / Advantages: 39 / Powers: 213 / Defenses: 25 (447)

The Stranger- Cosmic Journeyman Character:
-*sigh*... just a silly little cosmic dude in a generic outfit, with a boring appearance (some old guy in a GeneriKirby Suit with a weird skirt thing)- his only real purpose at first was to be a weird Mysterious Observer who got Magneto out of the Uncanny X-Men Title for a while. See, Mags was kind of an overwhelming character to Stan & Jack's bottom-tier book; showing up way too often and taking control of nearly every storyline. So he was quickly tossed out, then later reappeared when few of the other villains proved to be any good. After Magneto escaped him half a year later, the Stranger reappears in Tales to Astonish, having decided to destroy all the infrastructure Earth because he figured that humans sucked, and might rebuild better under his command. The Hulk is brainwashed into doing the deed, but Bruce Banner reverts and his attempt to destroy the Hulk leads the creation of the Abomination! Seeing even the savage Hulk show such valor in defeating a stronger opponent eventually convinces the Stranger not to go through with it... but he reappears again WITH THE SAME PLAN, only this time his "Null-Life Bomb" is destroyed by the sacrifice of a mortal man- the Stranger, having battled the Silver Surfer, learns of this, and agrees to leave.

-The Stranger later appears to aid the FF against the Overmind, then watches the Abomination battle Thor in another book, having used the Stranger's gear and captives to fight the Thunder God. In Marvel Team-Up, he attempts to wrest the Soul Gem from Adam Warlock's brow, and is foiled by a save from Spider-Man and the Gardener, who is shamed into helping with his own Soul Gem. He REALLYS acts as a "Journeyman" character thoughout this time period, passing from book to book, doing some vague stuff and generally just being opposed and beaten by, or aided by, some Earth hero- he shows up in The Champions to help destroy the Null-Life Bomb now that it's been reactivated, and has the Thing & the Hulk take on Pluto (the Olympian God of the Dead) in Marvel Two-In-One, feigning defeat so the two can put their differences aside and save the universe. Interestingly, the character almost never goes more than a year without an appearance SOMEWHERE- always in a new book. His deliberately-vague motivations always keep him mysterious and able to fill nearly any role in a story, which is probably why he was used so much.

Later Stranger Stories:
-Despite his early usefulness to Marvel stories, the Stranger then takes a nine-year break from appearing in Marvel stuff- in the meantime, the "Cosmic Scene" has been expanded by Steve Englehart & Mark Gruenwald. He helps the Avengers fight Nebula, and Quasar & the Watchers seeks his aid to halt a telepathic virus that is killing the Watchers (who now believe that their mere EXISTENCE counts as "interference" with other races). The day is saved, and Quasar takes the opportunity to save many "specimens" in the Stranger's lab- of course they're all obscure characters that only Mark Gruenwald would remember.

-With the new "Cosmic Scene" developed, the character oddly doesn't have a real role to play- he shows up in The Infinity Gauntlet, but doesn't play a major role in the story- he's merely treated as an extra Cosmic Being. Vague references compare him to the Elders of the Universe, but he isn't a true member (he's far more powerful than any of them). There was even mention that HIS might be the fourth, hidden face of the Living Tribunal! The Tribunal has stated that The Stranger COULD be a form of itself, split off to act on the real world in order to not be utterly separated from it. However, the fourth face was later revealed to be some sort of "mirror" that reflected all life in the universe.

-He later helps merge the New Universe & Marvel Universe in some book I've never heard of. Later stories in the 2000s would feature him in a role similar to his '60s-70s self, engaging in strange experiments- one is the basis for the series Beyond! (in which he mimics being the Beyonder), and another leads to the creation of Alter Ego, a moon of Ego. The past couple of decades have seen him mostly vanish, with maybe an appearance every five years or so- he's a mere add-on to the rest of the Cosmic Beings and his '60s-style outfit makes him look by far the lamest of the assembled guys. I never cared for the guy's concept, though I guess in theory it's cool to have a guy who doesn't offer any answers kicking around, especially if he's super-powerful- it opens up a lot of potential stories. But he never really offers much in the way of characterization or concept after FIFTY YEARS of time? I prefer my Cosmic Beings to have some sense of purpose or being- this guy's just THERE, written as an Excuse Plot that's about why the heroes are doing some random thing. The only stories I have featuring him involve the Infinity Gauntlet (he was one of the assembled Cosmics up against Thanos) and the time Quasar helped him convince all the Watchers not to commit Astral Suicide.

The Stranger's Might:
-The Stranger is highly-powerful, but not totally beyond reality: He typically requires human assistance to accomplish major events, and uses technology to counter-act things instead of just waving his arms. He belongs in the Cosmic Pantheon, but in the bottom tier of it, and as such, he makes PL 18 in my book- more powerful than any other Elder of the Universe (I'm not sure how linked he is to the group since he never encounters them, but a couple sources say he is), but less powerful than a Celestial or Galactus. He's one notch higher than a Skyfather as well, making him EXCEEDINGLY dangerous for a group of mortals to fight.

The Stranger's Laboratory World

Post by Jabroniville »

THE STRANGER'S LABORATORY WORLD:
-This planet initially held Magneto & the Toad, but later was where the Abomination was imprisioned. In Quasar #14, Mark Gruenwald sneakily tossed in every single forgotten space-themed character he could think of into this place, resulting in something I have to write literally dozens of times while working on my thread: "xxxxx was found on the Stranger's Laboratory World in Mark Gruenwald's Quasar run." None of them did much, but boy howdy was it a lot of people.

Roster of Forgotten Characters Trapped There:
1) The Captive/Threkker
2) Alpha the Ultimate Mutant
3) Creature from Kosmos (one-off monster from an Ant-Man/Wasp story)
4) Diamondhead (Nova foe)
5) Dragonfly (of the Ani-Men)
6) The Ethicals (band of five empowered humans from Machine-Man)
7) The Four Horsemen (alien band from a 1974 Fantastic Four issue)
8) Nygorn (powerful Monitor-like being from Marvel Two-In-One)
9) Krakora (the living island)
10) Megaman (faceless pawn of a protective cosmic being)
11) Mercurio the 4-D Man (Thor foe)
12) Fusion (twins who'd been fused together, then freed by Spider-Man)
13) The Futurist (modified Earth scientist)
14) The Power Platoon (band of modified soldiers; related to Quantum)
15) Gorr the Golden Gorilla (FF foe)
16) Jakar (weird illusionist one-off Cap foe)
17) The Bi-Beast (Hulk foe)
18) Meru the Mind-Bender (Thor/Spidey Foe)
19) Shanga the Star-Dancer (Whacked-out 1970s Space Lady)
20) Sky-Walker (bizarre one-off DD backgrounder)
21) Sphinxor (giant alien from Adam Warlock's past)
22) Stardust (ROM one-off0
23) Starman (the Will Payton DC character, as a one-off gag)
24) Ten-For (evil alien robot who fought Machine-Man)
25) Rocket Raccoon (then a forgotten '70s character; used as a gag)
26) The Trikon (three Inhumans empowered by Maximus)
27) The Weird Sisters (three agents of Maelstrom)
28) Woodgod (inexplicable nature god wannabe)

See to me the stranger should be about Mysteries. Stranger brings to mind enigmas mysteries.

so making him this guy who seeks to uncover all the universes mysteries great and small.

but also as a surprise not alwasy to discover the truth about them because once you do then theyre not mysteries any more are they,

So hes someone who might find swimming around in loch ness by aquaman or namor and then before any fight finishes he speaks to them about nessy and some of the legends around her and then vanishes only for a shadow to appear in the background as nessy swims by

this gives him story potential as he can be a guide to the heroes or even the villains on occasion as he guides them with millenia of knowledge of list civilizations and ancient aliens and artifacts lost to time. but before theyre found he leaves because while he wants to know he also doesnt want to because actually knowing the truth would be boring as hell
Dr. Silverback has wryly observed that this is like trying to teach lolcats about Shakespeare

The Children of the Atom

THE CHILDREN OF THE ATOM
Created By:
Vita Ayala & Bernard Chang
First Appearance: Children of the Atom #1 (March 2021)
Role: Forgotten Newbie Characters

-Yeah, I don't know, either. However, it's pretty clear why, kinda- these guys were scheduled to debut RIGHT BEFORE the lockdown of 2020 shut down much of the world, and so people probably weren't even going to comic book shops when this sucker was released. This probably kicked the book square in the dick; the first appearance (a cameo in Marvel's Voices) was released in Feb. 2020 and the Limited Series came out in March-August 2021. The art team changed over after only the second issue, as well- a really bad sign.

-The Children of the Atom take their name from an old nickname for the X-Men (which is kind of annoying, because now the phrase can mean said nickname OR these characters), and are a band of vigilantes, most of which have names that are goofy riffs on the X-Men's. It seems at the start that they're mutants to want to join the X-Men, but it turns out that they were merely using alien technology (they found a crashed spaceship) to MIMIC super-powers- they want to do this to join Krakoa's isolationist "Mutants Only" society. One was said to be a mutant and invited to the Hellfire Gala, but the others are unable to enter the gateways, being humans who can't trick the gates. Reviewers seem to indicate this is kind of a metaphor for young readers who want to "join the X-Men", but can't. The characters debuted at the worst possible time and the X-Men books are probably gonna be revamped AGAIN now that Hickman bailed, so the future for these guys (many of whom have stupid names) isn't bright.

The Roster:
Cyclops-Lass- But a guy?
Cherub- Angel-like sound-blaster.
Marvel Guy- Pheromone-user.
Daycrawler- Teleporter.
Gimmick- Gambit-like, but an actual mutant.

So this group was inspired by me going back through the archives at one point and finding those comment:
Doc chaos wrote: Thu Aug 12, 2021 7:56 am Hey, Jab I have you been picking up any new books? I got some new characters for you. Would you be interested in Children of the Atom? Gadget based kids acting like mutants, kind of like that version of the New Warriors with the villain tech.
I'd somehow missed it or read it and forgot about it by the time I got home, so it got missed. These are way too new characters to bother building, but I can at least make profiles for them.

Cyclops-Lass

Image

CYCLOPS-LASS (Beatrice "Buddy" Bartholemew)
Created By:
Vita Ayala & Bernard Chang
First Appearance: Children of the Atom #1 (March 2021)
Role: Forgotten Newbie Character, Blaster, Team Leader

-"Buddy" is our Mandatory Gay Teenager (all superhero teams created after 2001 are contractually-obligated to feature one homosexual on them), an androgynous-looking teenage girl who leads the squad, taking after Cyclops. Her mother died when she was a child, and she has admired the X-Men since she first saw them on TV. She is dating her teammate Gimmick.

-Buddy wields a visor that can shoot red beams of concussive force, like Cyclops can. Presumably at a much lower level of power.

GIMMICK (Carmen Maria Cruz)
Created By:
Vita Ayala & Bernard Chang
First Appearance: Children of the Atom #1 (March 2021)
Role: Forgotten Newbie Character, Actual Mutant

-Gimmick is dressed like Gambit, and is an Afro/Latina girl who is dating Cyclops-Lass. It turns out that she's the only authentic mutant on the team- she apparently has a Reptilian alternate form.

MARVEL GUY (Benny Thomas)
Created By:
Vita Ayala & Bernard Chang
First Appearance: Children of the Atom #1 (March 2021)
Role: Forgotten Newbie Character, Protective Older Brother, Outcast

-A broad, heavyset young guy, Benny is the older brother of Daycrawler, and always felt like an outcast- his father remarried and focused his attention on his new family, while his mother moved away. Nonetheless, Benny watches out for young Jay.

-Benny uses pheromone-projecting gear to twist the minds of people. This proved ineffective against some soldiers with air filters on, though, and he was knocked out.

I think 0 may be too high for the Obliterator's intelligence, given how he had to be told that he could just get new weapons after his old ones were destroyed.

One of the Children of the Atom is literally called Gimmick? That's funny. I remember the previews of CotA said something about them being "hip" because they were always on their cell phones and tablets, because that's apparently all the new generation does. It reminded me of the Xtreme 2 da MAX Ultimate X-Men, who were "hip" 20 years ago because they had piercings and facial hair.
Always ask before you use someone's Original Character.
Never ever use them without permission. Only Villains do that.

Nothing like a bunch of dorky 30-40 year olds writing what they think the hip kids are doing.

DAYCRAWLER (Jay Thomas, aka Nighty-Nightcrawler)
Created By:
Vita Ayala & Bernard Chang
First Appearance: Children of the Atom #1 (March 2021)
Role: Forgotten Newbie Character, Exciteable Kid, Team Teleporter

-Daycrawler & Marvel Guy are brothers who joined the team together. Jay here uses alien tech to teleport, producing a "BAMF!" sound and smoke just like Nightcrawler. His suit also contains bits of Magneto's helmet that blocked telepathy, too. He's the "Young, Exciteable One", often being told to calm down by his teammates. He's immature enought that he drops the name Daycrawler and instead switches to... ugh... "Nighty-Nightcrawler".
