The modern Crimson Avenger is just . . . lame. Like the worst kind of edge lord nonsense lame. For one thing, as I understand it, it retcons the original Crimson Avenger as being a Shadow-inspired gun blasting vigilante instead of using a Sandman/Green Hornet style gas gun to subdue foes. Then there's the whole "the guns were cursed" stupidity, the "his chest symbol was a bullet hole" and her literally having a bleeding chest wound as her symbol. She sounds like Johns came up with her while Linkin Park, Stabbing Westward and Nine Inch Nails were playing in the background.

Such a waste of a legacy character and one of DC's oldest hero names.

You know, if they ever decide that Tim Drake can't be Robin again, I'd make him the new Crimson Avenger (that or the new Question). Something that plays up his detective roots, maybe even have him embrace the old Pulp Hero look. Tim is that kind of a loveable dork, after all.

Give him the car he had (at least for a while) as Robin, but drop "Red" out of the name. Then he'd be the Crimson Avenger... with Wing.

I think you can chalk the entire power girl thing up to magic bullets Kryptionian types are usually confident in their invulnerability so when confronted by some rando with a gun theyre not so big on dodging which usually they dont have to worry about. So BANG she gets hit by a bullet that rips right through her and wounds her in a way shes not used to ever being in

Total: Abilities: 56 / Skills: 54--27 / Advantages: 22 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 15 (120)

Vigilante- DC's Modern Western Hero:
-Vigilante's yet ANOTHER guy who's got a messed-up history as a character, thanks to DC's "meant to fix everything but really made everything more confusing" Crisis on Infinite Earths. See, Vigilante #1 was a guy in the '40s who was a cowboy superhero, and got stuck on the Seven Soldiers of Victory team (better known as "the non-powered guys who weren't good enough to get on the JSA"). Earth-One (which, of course, was the SECOND Earth created) had a Vigilante too, with the same name and everything. But the Crisis merged them together, so now it's just one guy. Add to that his sidekick Stuff, The Chinatown Kid, one of many "Chinese kid" sidekicks from that era (the Golden Age featured dozens of rip-offs of every successful concept, and this one was stolen from the Green Hornet's radio program), who was in some stories, yet never mentioned in others (like the "Seven Soldiers" tales, until he was retconned onto the team, replacing Green Arrow & Speedy I, who never existed anymore. Got that?). Oddly enough, his best appearance is probably in JLU!

-Greg Sanders was the grandson of a Native American warrior, and the son of a Wyoming sheriff- he moved to New York and became a country singer, the "Prairie Troubadour", but when his father was killed, he returned home and brought justice to the gang of bandits that killed him. Bandits killing a sheriff in 1941? I mean, yeah, it's comics. But they even had to Retcon his origin early, because they had to explain away a STAGECOACH ROBBERY in the 1940s! Vigilante typically fought using "Cowboy Things"- trick shooting, lassos, and horse-riding, but he was also an excellent motorcyclist. Four years later, Stuff the Chinatown Kid debuted, helping Vigilante fight a Japanese spy. Vigilante joined the Seven Soldiers of Victory, but in these books, Stuff didn't appear at all, and instead was replaced by an old, crotchety man named Billy Gunn. Vigilante actually lasted a shockingly long time- all the way until Action Comics #198 in 1954! This makes him one of the marathon men of the Golden Age, in fact. But it makes sense- by this point, Western Comics were one of the biggest things going, and DC had a ready-made Western hero. ALSO, he was of course created by Mort Weisinger, whose creations tended to last well into the '50s, probably thanks to his political power at DC. However, another trend came calling, and Vigilante was replaced by spaceman Tommy Tomorrow.

The Seven Soldiers' Revival:
-When the Seven Soldiers were revived in 1972, Vigilante showed up a few times, once saving Superman from a werewolf (perhaps a nod to his status as a backup feature in Superman's Action Comics), and later as a backup feature in Adventure Comics. In World's Finest, Vigilante comes ot Gotham City to meet his old partner Stuff, only to find that he'd been murdered by his old enemy, The Dummy! In the end, Vigilante rode off with Stuff's son, who had been trained by Richard Dragon. Nothing much had come of it. For some reason, in the 1990s his last name was changed to "Saunders"- someone either fit him in with Speed & Kendra, or just misspelled it and it stuck, lol. In Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E., it's indicated that Vigilante had actually been trapped in the Wild West for 20 years when the Soldiers were trapped in limbo- he said it was the most fun he'd ever had. This retcons a lot of the post-1972 stuff, as those stories featured a younger hero. In Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers book, this original Vigilante establishes the new Seven Soldiers of Victory, but everyone dies fighting the monster at the end of the series. He returns alive with no explanation in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen, just stating "He died and came back to life" in a hilariously offhand sort of way- here, he's the sheriff of Warpath, a town on the Mexican border.

Vigilante in "Justice League Unlimited":
-Vigilante started out as just a pretty common background guy in JLU, but suddenly the writers discovered they REALLY liked writing cowboy dialogue. So much so, that ol' Vig kept getting more and more screen-time, to the point where he was the "third guy" on a LOT of missions (Hawkgirl vs. Thanagarians, Seven Soldiers, Task Force-X), getting tons of lines, and doing lots of shooting. He never got big enough to be seen without the mask (or even have his real name mentioned!), but he was always there, as one of the more iconic "Redshirts" in the background. It's more than poor Atom Smasher got, cuz he was always stuck in the background punching stuff and grunting.

Vigilante's Abilities:
-Vigilante is a low-level super-hero, being essentially a crack-shot (though his double pistols are good enough to have Multiattack on them- he IS a super-hero after all) with a bunch of gun-based Advantages.

Ken mentioned the story "Whatever Happened to the Crimson Avenger" being an award-winner, and having read that tale when I was a kid, it WAS excellent; if DC wanted a successor to the Crimson Avenger, they should have the legacy be the now-adult infant that Lee Travis saved during the tale.

(I remember quite a few of those "Whatever Happened..." stories being pretty solid, by the way.

There was also a really good JSA backup that featured the original Red Tornado, "The Way of the Amazon", with the WWII Wonder Woman (who was ret-conned as Hippolyta at the time), Liberty Belle, and Phantom Lady. Mrs. Hunkel was treated as a serious crime-buster (or more, spy-buster in this case), and it worked, with the character perfectly fitting as a working class neighborhood hero who was also a single mom.

I also really liked Maxine/Cyclone, and miss that kind of character in the current DCU. But you're right, Jab-the math doesn't exactly work. Her mother would have been sixty-something when she was born (assuming Max was a biological daughter) back when she debuted, and now...that's really the issue with using the JSA/Golden Age heroes, because writers have to just ignore the age thing or keep inventing reasons why characters who should be gone or VERY elderly are still running around and active.

All my best.

-Billy Gunn (no relation to Monte "Kip" Sopp) is a rarity- an OLD MAN Sidekick! He joined Vigilante early in the man's run (before Stuff, apparently), then vanished. However, he WAS Vigilante's sidekick on the Seven Soldiers of Victory (Stuff never appeared on the team until modern times)- he was Retconned into one of the Seven to explain the disappearance of some members from continuity. Billy was a former Stage Actor who was fascinated by tales of the Wild West, which naturally led to him engaging in gunfights with real crooks at the side of a modern-day cowboy. Funnily enough, most websites won't even list how he DIED- I had to re-read my Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. book to figure it out: He barges in on Wing & The Spider after the rest of the Seven Soldiers run off to stop The Nebula Man, having figured out that The Spider's a mole for the enemy. But before Wing can do anything, The Spider fires an arrow through Billy's neck, killing him in one shot.

-Billy is a PL 6 Cowboy, an adequate sidekick to a PL 8 one.

Relationship (Some Pornstar)- Jimmy was attracted to a porn star while an adult, and this led to his death at the hands of Bugsy Siegel.

Total: Abilities: 40 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 1 / Defenses: 11 (74)

-Asian Kid Sidekicks became popular in the 1940s with the success of the Green Hornet radio program, and so we had Stuff, the sidekick of Vigilante. Why he's called STUFF I couldn't possibly tell you (was that a common nickname back in the before-time?). Stuff was later revealed to have been murdered- in 1977 it was at the hands of The Dummy (a recurring Vigilante foe who resembles a ventriloquist's dummy), and Post-Crisis it was BUGSY SIEGEL of all people! With Jimmy dead, his brother Victor becomes the new Chinatown Kid, dressing in Chinese garb instead of Western wear. As an adult, Victor (introduced in Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E., well into the modern era) becomes a restauranteur, and the owner of the rights to films Greg made in the '40s.

-Stuff is a minor Martial Artist back in the day (PL 5 on offense, PL 6 to Parry), making a decent, but standard, Kid Sidekick to the PL 8 Greg Saunders.

Victor appeared before that, in the late 80s el Diablo series.

-Shining Knight is an iconic "Background Guy" because he took up a lot of space with his giant Pegasus mount, making him handy filler (George Perez found a similar thing in Crisis on Infinite Earths- go back and see how many times Sir Justin is in big group shots, taking up the room of eight guys- you see a lot of it in JLU, too, where he became a popular recurring character). He nonetheless was cool enough to last over NINTEY appearances back in the old days.

-The Knight is Sir Justin, an Arthurian Knight who gained some bitchin' magical equipment and a flying horse in payment from Merlin for saving the old wizard's life. However, in his first mission with his new gear, Sir Justin ended up in an avalanche, which froze both him and Winged Victory (the horse) for hundreds of years- thawing out in 1941. Eventually, he joined DC's C-List hero team, The Seven Soldiers of Victory, alongside other Badass Normals (the only super-powered one on the team was THE HORSE), and the whole squad was time-tossed by Nebula Man, ending up in modern times. After that, he largely-vanishes but for a handful of shots here and there- the Crisis, Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. (which revealed that he'd been romantic with the female Firebrand, mourning when she was killed by the Dragon King), and a few other books would use him in cameos, but there seemed to never be a place for "Modern-Day Arthurian Knight" in superhero comics anymore, for some reason. I mean, it can come off kinda plain- like "Guy in chainmail" isn't epic enough, but with a chest logo and maybe a more magical sword, there's nothing hurting the concept. Maybe artists just don't wanna draw the horse, lol.

-Shining Knight ends up a PL 9 with a PL 7 Mount- he's a melee warrior with a killer sword, but he's ultimately an also-ran amongst other heroes. Winged Victory makes me yet again happy I made a set of Animal Builds, because I swear I've used that damn Pegasus build like eighty times for various superheroes at this point.

The Shining Knight (Sir Ystin)

Post by Jabroniville »

Image
Image

THE SHINING KNIGHT II (Sir Ystin/Ystina)
Created By:
Grant Morrison & Simone Bianchi
First Appearance: Seven Soldiers: Shining Knight #1 (Aug. 2005)
Role: Temporary Legacy Character
Group Affiliations: The Seven Soldiers of Victory (Remake)

-This Shining Knight was part of that Grant Morrison "New Seven Soldiers Form" mini-arc in 2005. "Ystin" was a female Shining Knight ("Ystin" being a Welsh variant of "Justin", like the original Knight) and also had a winged horse. However, it's explained (cuz Morrison) that "Camelot is a recurring archetype" and she's actually from 8,000 BC, long before Sir Justin's Camelot days. Ystin was knighted by Sir Galahad, but unknown to him, Ystin was a female who was in love with him. She is captured by a faerie-esque Sheeda-Queen, but swipes Excalibur and breaks free... only to end up in modern-day Los Angeles. The Sheeda-Queen confronts her in this world, with Sir Galahad as a mind-controlled brute as her agent. Ystin is forced to kill her beloved, but gains revenge when the Seven Soldiers defeat the Sheeda. She is later returned to her own time, with "sketchy records" indicating that she helped restore a Sheeda-ravaged world centuries ago.

-In the "New 52", Paul Cornell re-uses the character, making Ystin transgender- appearing biologically female but identifying as male.

-So in the 1950s, there was a "Batmen of All Nations" bit in the Batman book, featuring non-powered vigilante heroes & sidekicks across many nations- Bill Finger & Dick Sprang penned a tale where Batman & Robin met "The Batman of England"- the Knight & Squire. The two didn't really show up much, and were mostly forgotten. Naturally, Roy Thomas remembered, and so when he created Young All-Stars to introduce some Retcon Heroes, he showed the origins of the Knight.

-Percy Sheldrake was a young boy living in England during the London Blitz- he lost his parents to Nazi bombs, and a guilt-ridden Sir Justin, the Shining Knight, took Percy on as his squire after being unable to save them. Introduced in the Retcon series Young All-Stars by Roy Thomas, he teamed up with the Young Allies and did some stuff. He would later grow up to become The Knight, taking his own son Cyril as his new Squire. This was meant to explain the origin of that "Knight & Squire" duo met by Batman & Robin in their "Batmen of All Nations" arc in the 1950s. Percy was unfortunately killed by his archenemy Spring-Heeled Jack, leading to Cyril becoming the new Knight- Cyril later joined The Ultramarine Corps., and took on a new Squire in Beryl Hutchinson.
