The Death Squad (Foreigner Agents)

Post by Jabroniville »

THE DEATH SQUAD
Created By:
Howard Mackie & Alex Saviuk
First Appearance: Web of Spider-Man #92 (Aug. 1992)
Role: Filler Jobber Villains

-Oh man, I missed ANOTHER Stupid '90s Goon Squad! Hooray! So the Death Squad (sharing a name with ANOTHER useless goon squad- one that faced Iron Man) are a band of goons formed by The Foreigner- a minor player in the 1990s Spider-Man books (of which there were four in the 1990s, remember), to act as his personal assassins as part of his "1400 Club". And each one had a number after their name- Silence-1 was replaced by Silence-2 when he died, for example. Naturally because it's the mid-90s they're all horrible and wore armor. They were sent after Spider-Man and Betty Brant, as she was investigating the death of her late husband, Ned Leeds, and Foreigner knew she had a link to Spider-Man and wanted to test his "Death Squad" against the hero. However, the Death Squad are handily defeated- Silence-1 managed to tag his own partners rather than either of his targets, for example. Whisper-3 was tangling with Spider-Man and was killed by Pulse to prevent his capture. Pulse-2 then blew himself up to escape capture and cover the team's tracks. Apparently these guys were SUPER-LOYAL.

-The Squad showed up in the next issue with new members- Pulse-3 replacing Pulse-2 after having his information (and abilities?) transfered to the Foreigner's base, Silence-1 replacing Whisper-3 and Swift-1 & Warfare joining them. Spider-Man defeated the four after a longer battle, and this time Warfare blew himself up.

-The Death Squad actually never reappeared in Mackie's own books, but showed up in Spectacular Spider-Man in late 1994, now working for the mysterious "Boss" (who turned out to be Justin Hammer in a later Spectacular Spider-Man Annual), who took over the Foreigner's organization and sent the men after him. However, the Foreigner killed one of their number (Silence-2)- Pulse & Swift were about to kill him when Spider-Man intervened, saving the Foreigner's life. Pulse was killed when his self-destruct device was activated by the Foreigner, and Swift fled. He was later executed by Dead Aim, ANOTHER agent of the 1400 Club, for his failure. After a couple of years the concept was done away with- with Hammer failing to kill the Foreigner, the latter blew up the 1400 Club's base and all the technology associated with it. Hammer swore revenge, but was himself not long for the world (via the Iron Man book).

-The Death Squad are REALLY low-level guys. Low enough that it takes multiples of them to take on a low-end guy like The Foreigner (just a low-rent sub-character in the Spidey books), and Spider-Man can easily handle them on his own. Most are PL 7 on offense (just enough to endanger a low-toughness human-level guy) and PL 6 on defense. Just really, really sub-par gear (they even have SELF-DESTRUCT DEVICES implanted in them!).

-Whisper-3 was one of the first Death Squad members seen, teaming with Pulse-2 to investigate and possibly kill Betty Brant. He spoke only in whispers and carried a bunch of Japanese weapons like sais, katanas & shuriken. The two tangled with Spider-Man, but Betty pulled out a gun and shot him- he recovered and nearly stabbed Spidey (being surprisingly fast himself), but the hero used Whisper-3 to block some of the lethal shots Pulse-2 was throwing at him, and the assassin was killed. It's funny, because with his cape and green armor, he looks kinda like a recolored version of Nightwatch. Like, why put in the effort if you're gonna kill him straight away?

-The first Pulse we saw was "Pulse-2", a generic Blaster. He & Whisper-3 went in search of Betty Brant, but encountered Spider-Man. He actually managed to tag Spidey a couple of times, knocking him down with a "stunning" pulse and nearly killing him with the follow-up that melted the floor. The hero then pulled Whisper-3 into the line of fire, which killed him- Pulse-2 then self-destructed himself to prevent their capture or information reaching others.

-Pulse-3 immediately replaced Pulse-2, going up against Spider-Man in the group's next fight, alongside some fresh allies. However, he repeatedly failed to hit the wall-crawler, instead killing his own ally, Silence-1.

-Pulse-4 was a Blaster primarily, and looks identical to Pulse-2. He destroyed the Foreigner's sword in the Death Squad's fight against the spy. They were about to finish him off when Spider-Man swooped in, rescuing him. Pulse failed to hit Spidey and got kicked, and when he was stunned, the Foreigner activated the self-destruct command in his armor. Pulse-4 was killed.

-Swift-1 appeared in the Death Squad's second issue, teaming with Pulse, Whisper & Warfare to kill Spider-Man. He proved near-equal to Spider-Man in speed & reflexes at first, but was stabbed in the throat by a sai thrown from Whisper-3. Spider-Man believed him dead, especially when Warfare self-destructed. However, Swift was in fact the sole survivor, showing up with new Pulse & Silence to hunt down and kill the Foreigner after a new boss took over the 1400 Club. Swift actually survived THIS fight as well, having kicked the Foreigner and fleeing after the fight turned against them on the arrival of Spider-Man. However, he was later found dead, executed by Dead Aim for his failure.

-Swift had no special powers, and was instead a good unarmed fighter- good enough to tag either Spider-Man OR The Foreigner, despite doing no lasting damage.

-Silence-1 (who looked exactly like Whisper-3, making me wonder why he isn't just Whisper-4) wielded twin katanas, and had a specialized "Silence Field" that absorbed all sounds within a certian radius, from voices to explosions. He was sent after Spider-Man & Betty Brant, but proved his uselessness when he threw a sai into Swift-1 by accident. Spider-Man, despite being confused by the silence all around him, grabbed the killer and used him as a human shield to block the attacks. However, Pulse-3 shot a blast THROUGH his own ally, killing him, in hopes of hitting the hero. Spidey thankfully avoided it.

-Silence-1 is mostly just an idiot- his only successful shot being a Team Kill and then getting TK'd himself.

From the description, I think this whole thing must have been an attempt to ape the more hyperviolent style of comics that Image was portraying while at the same time leaving that firmly in the hands of the villains of the piece, and thus ostensibly critiquing it. I don't say it did so successfully.

-The masked Silence-2 replaced his predecessor, but actually looks like Whisper-3 instead. He attacked the Foreigner with his allies, but proved to be an idiot like his predecessor- the Foreigner handily disarmed him of his katana and killed him with it.

-Warfare looked a bit unsual compared to his allies, resembling a mash-up of Iron Man & The Punisher. He also had no number after his name for no particular reason. He was heavily-armored and carried guns, and he proved himself to be an idiot- when he aimed his Automatic Cannons at Spider-Man & Betty Brant, Spidey's Spider-Sense saved them both, and Warfare failed in every other shot, blowing up windows, walls, and even killing his partner Pulse-3! Spidey, angered at the violent death, stunned Warfare with a big punch- when Warfare realized the fight had turned against them, he committed suicide via self-destruct. Of the group, he had the most durable gear but the lowest offensive PL.

-Dead Aim, another 1400 Club assassin with a visor and hair sticking out from the top, seemed similar to the "Pulse" guys. He was also sent after The Foreigner, but apart from the Death Squad- when he found that Swift had fled after the group's failure to kill the Foreigner, he executed him without mercy. Dead Aim then managed to shoot the Foreigner with a ray, but Spider-Man attacked him and fended him off. He, Warzone & Battle Scar then teamed up, tracking the Foreigner, who lost his powers when Dead Aim's information led their boss to take control of Foreigner's empowering satellite thingie. Dead Aim proved unable to be blinded by Spidey's webs and actually caught him in his deadly grip, but Spider-Man then BROKE his visor, causing him to blast wildly. Ultimately, the satellite fell to the ground, knocking Dead Aim and his allies out. They were all then arrested.

-Dead Aim is easily the most capable of all the 1400 Club agents- able to kill another of their team (on PURPOSE, even!) and grab Spider-Man in hand-to-hand. He was unable to be blinded by webbing somehow, but was blinded by just having his visor destroyed- this put the fight out of him.

-Warzone, a doofy-looking guy in orange with a plain skullcap helmet and random lines drawn on him by Sal Buscema (who was NOT doing his best work during this period), was an ally of Dead Aim's, trying to kill Spider-Man and the Foreigner. He failed to hit EITHER opponent, instead only blowing up the scenery, then watched as a satellite fell on the, KOing the trio.
