While I do really like the "Evil Superman by way of Dracula" outfit Nefaria is well known for, I have a soft spot for this armored look.

I though the Vision had to be nigh-intangible to fly? How could he be heavy enough to hurt Luchino and stay aloft?

Maybe he goes low density to fly up, gain momentum, does a hard shift to max density at the point of impact, then reverts to low density to remain flying.

Though to be fair, Vision's flight has never been consistent, and these days he can just fly regardless of his current density.

Complications:
Relationship (Tony Stark)- Whitney loved Stark, then hated him, then tried to kill him AND loved him, etc.
Relationship (The Hood)- Whitney's biggest part of recent modern-day comics is her relationship to Bendis-Pet The Hood, and she acted as his second-in-command, while also sexing him up.
Relationship (Count Nefaria)- The daugher of the mega-villain, Frost is often torn between her loyalty to him, and the fact that he's kind of a madman.

Total: Abilities: 64 / Skills: 60--30 / Advantages: 20 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 14 (128)

Madame Masque- Tony's Tragic Crimeboss Love:
-Madame Masque is equal parts tragic "Dating Catwoman" story and "Lady Crimeboss"- she kind of has a set-up as a major figure in crime, but has been varying extremely minor or randomly pushed at Marvel over the years- she exists as probably their most notable and famous "Evil Lady Spy", but can be subservient to her own father or alternately sort of an ally to the heroes at times, so it's tricky. She's never been the major villain in an arc, for example. But while Marvel has a LOT of lady crimebosses and spies out there, though, none of them have that one amazing "touch"- that damn golden mask just makes Whitney Frost by far the most iconic and notable of them all. Unfortunately, her role more often than not is the "Girl Friday" to various super-villains- despite being a Maggia boss at points, she is largely a subordinate to Count Nefaria, The Hood, Norman Osborn and Baron Zemo over the years, and is rarely her own woman. Her love affair with Tony Stark has come up a few times but was largely a function of only a single arc or two, and way back before most fans were reading, so she ends up being forgotten compared to famous doomed romances like Daredevil/Elektra, Batman/Catwoman, Daredevil/Typhoid Mary, and more.

-Whitney Frost is a longtime Iron Man supporting cast member, but actually went a couple of decades without featuring much in his book. She debuted being revealed as the daughter of Count Nefaria- she'd been hidden away and raised by an associate, as Nefaria wanted his daughter to be brought up respectably... but then he walked up to her on the deaths of her "parents" and was told she was the heir to his Maggia Family and should join it. "Whitney Frost" is horrified and refuses, but when she tells this to her fiancée, he breaks off his relationship with her, fearing this link could hurt his political prospects. Heartbroken, Whitney accepts and joins the Maggia, becoming immediately trained in criminality and spycraft.

-When Count Nefaria is imprisoned, his daughter immediately takes over as the "Big M" of their Maggia family, and leads well as his proxy. However, she was badly-scarred after a plane crash following a battle with Iron Man, and began teaming with the goofy, gold-obsessed Midas- he gave her the now-iconic golden mask she has worn thereafter. From then on, Giuletta is known almost always as "Madame Masque". However, she is quickly attracted to Tony Stark when she shows concern for her despite her scarred face- she betrays Midas to save Tony's life, but leaves him because of her criminal past. However, unable to forget her feelings, she joins his organization as "Krissy Longfellow", Tony's personal secretary. Both eventually learn each other's true identities and form a relationship, but the Count resurfaces, dying in jail. Masque hires the Ani-Men to free him and demands Tony fix him, but becomes so mentally torn when Nefaria battles Iron Man that she goes insane with grief and guilt. She abandons Tony, rejoining the Maggia as a leader.

Madame Masque in the '90s & Beyond:
-Subsequently, Madame Masque pops up creating a bunch of "Bio-Duplicates" of herself out of paranoia, but one refers to herself as just "Masque" and joins the Avengers as an ally in the 1990s. When the Count returns with tons of powers, nearly killing the Avengers & Thunderbolts, Whitney is again torn, but Masque is killed trying to stop the villain. When Whitney sees Iron Man's sorrow and Nefaria's glee (both think that was the real Whitney who died), she realizes that Masque was right and helps beat her father. She decides to reform in that Thunderbolts comic... so of course she vanishes from comics for years before turning up as The Hood's #2 in his "supervillain army". She later works for Norman Osborn, torturing Pepper Potts for information on how to find Tony- Tony admits to Whitney that he loves her... but still chooses Pepper, and Masque is beaten and arrested, subsequently teaming up with either Norman or the Hood. The Hood eventually gets the Infinity Gems, using one to return Whitney's face to its original state.

-Madame Masque gets a big push in Matt Fraction & David Aja's Hawkeye, where she is set up as a rival to Kate Bishop and drawn EXCEPTIONALLY attractively by a few of the artists, given that her face is now fixed. There are some hilarious bits that involved her trying to gain possession of a videotape of Hawkeye murdering important political figures. Things get personal when she's bound and gagged in her lingerie and replaced by Kate- swearing vengeance, Masque lures Kate to California and tries to destroy her life. As the series ends, she holds a massive grudge against both Hawkeyes. She joins the Shadow Council's "Masters of Evil" as Baron Zemo's right-hand woman. She is demonically possessed win one Iron Man story (Doctors Doom & Strange get involve to exorcize the demon), and in West Coast Avengers, she renews hostility with Kate Bishop by forming a West Coast Masters of Evil featuring Eel, Graviton, Lady Bullseye, MODOK Superior, Satana, and Kate's parents Derek & Eleanor Bishop.

Madame Masque's Abilities:
-Madame Masque has an uncomfortable thing where she engages in spycraft and investigation, but she's pretty minor league as fighters go. Hell, Kate Bishop was beaten up by COMMON THUGS in Hawkeye yet could beat Whitney up no problem. Masque is certainly no match for Iron Man (obviously), but even moderate fighters can take her out. She's not TOTALLY out of her league against Punisher, Nick Fury or Domino, though- gunfighting is her stock in trade. The only really unique thing about her is her Mask, which has the unerring ability to deflect bullets (apparently guys always aim for the face- most heroes would be screwed by adversaries with such accuracy)- reflected by added Dodge. The Mask is in fact the only part of her that is PL 9- the rest of her is PL 8.

I know she's usually thought of as a mutant first but I'd put Mystique ahead of Masque.

And I always get her confused with Madame Hydra, probably because they have the same first name.

That's possible- was that brought up in that story? I mean it's only 15-ish years removed by their time.

TIBERIUS "TY" STONE
Created By:
Frank Tieri & Alitha Martinez
First Appearance: Iron Man #37 (Dec. 2000)
Role: Rival Corporate Boss
Group Affiliations: Viastone/Alchemax

-Ty Stone is yet another Corporate Rival of Tony Stark's, debuting in 2000. The two were childhood friends and rivals, competing in all things- girls, sports & grades- but Howard Stark eventually drove Stone's dad into near-bankruptcy. Ty returned after years away in Europe planning to become richer than Tony, even taking his girlfriend Rumiko Fujikawa! He even allied with The Hand and the Kingpin, developing Spider-Sense jammers to use against Spider-Man, but these failed and his involvement was discovered- he was fired from his job and went into hiding, fearing for his life. Ty was taken in by the Tinkerer, where he double-crossed Tink's client the Hobgoblin, sabotaging his gear due to bad things Hobby did while Ty was working for the Kingpin. After this point, he mostly drops Tony Stark as an enemy and vanishes.

-Finally, in recent times, Ty combines his fortune with that of Liz Allan, creating the organization Alchemax, which is a "Big Bad Evil Corporation" in the Marvel 2099 universe, particularly vexing Spider-Man 2099. Stone allies with the Goblin King and his Goblin Nation during their brief takeover of New York, then plans to sell Spider-Slayers to Trans-Sabal. He has a change of heart after a rebel leader who'd kidnapped him actually gave her life to save his, using the Spider-Slayers his company built to overthrow the nation's dictator.

-Ty Stone is a good businessman but no combatant, seemingly being helpless against any opposition. He's not even an inventor.

He does refer to the X-Men as "my greatest foes", and gives the "How many times must I kill them before [they] finally stay dead?" line, but there's no little yellow box referring back to that specific incident.

-"Iron Man 2020" hails from Earth's future, and is Arno Stark, the son of Tony's first cousin, the unscrupulous Morgan Stark. He acts as a hired mercenary in his timeline, and engages in corporate espionage. And oddly, he fought Machine Man, who declared that "I am a better man than you!". He then ends up in our time, fighting Spider-Man & Iron Man, then gets a one-shot story to himself in 1994, and it's revealed that he may be leaning towards a more-heroic path after his actions lead to the deaths of several family members and other innocent lives. He last appeared in a Kang storyline (involving him gathering numerous time-travellers, such as Arno, Stryfe and Ahab), but is now most well-represented by his MODERN version, a younger Arno who acts as a kind of assistant/future rival to Tony Stark (he's working on advances in the "Extremis" line).

-Arno is basically a lesser Tony, using the same-powered armor (but typically ALWAYS using Power Attack), and having less genius.

Arno Stark

ARNO STARK
Created By:
Kieron Gillen & Dale Eaglesham (after Tom DeFalco & Herb Trimpe)
First Appearance: Iron Man #17 (Dec. 2013)
Role: Possibly-Evil Relative

-So Arno Stark had been "Iron Man 2020" in the Machine Man series and was a possible future, but in 2013 he actually entered the proper Marvel continuity, in a weird way. So it turns out that Tony Stark has a LONG-LOST BROTHER, and had been genetically altered by the Recorder known as "451" to pilot the "Godkiller" armor- upon learning this, his father Howard sabotaged the experiment, which caused Arno to be born crippled and mute. His existence was kept secret from Tony for years until Tony randomly discovered him at the Maria Stark Foundation. Tony immediately befriends his brother, and the two face off against the Mandarin and others. Arno was seemingly-killed, but popped up in his own Iron Man armor, helping beat the villains. Tony ultimately left Arno in charge of "Troy"- a futuristic utopia the two had created from the broken "Mandarin City"- figuring that it'd never be safe as long as he was associated with it.

-Arno later worked on the Extremis Virus, using it to cure himself of his congenital defects. And then he's randomly just evil I guess, often secreting around and gaining power- he ultimately gains ownership of Stark Unlimited, merging it with his partner Sunset Bain's Baintronics. He tries to build his own version of Tony's "Godbuster" Armor called Iron Man Model 66. This leads to the Iron Man 2020 storyline, which was a cute reference to the original Arno Stark story-arc, given that this was released IN the actual year 2020. In the story, Arno is unknowingly re-afflicted by his condition, which will kill him in less than a year. Suffering from delusions, he thinks the Earth is doomed and moves to unite humanity against the cause (some alien A.I.), and Tony traps him in a "virtual armor" that feeds him a fictional virtual reality (his "eScape" program). And that's where Arno sits today.

-Arno Stark is apparently also a genius, and sometimes has enhanced biology via the Extremis Virus.

Isn't this also the story where Tony learns he's not even a Stark, but is just adopted? I thought that was a worse story choice than him dying and coming back from the dead like every character does.

Maybe. I have to deal with that whole ass-hattery today, as it’s “Stark Foundation Builds” day, lol.

Yup, we're going to just go with "that's a future retcon/forgotten story" and leave it at that.

WTH is Marvel Comics thinking lately?

Howard & Maria Stark

HOWARD & MARIA STARK
Created By:
Bill Mantlo & George Tuska
First Appearance: Iron Man #104 (Aug. 1977)
Role: The Hero's Parents

-Tony Stark, like a huge chunk of Marvel's heroes, was an orphan whose parents were intially unexplained- it was just kinda accepted that most heroes had no parents because Stan Lee never bothered to create any. They first got mentioned in *1977* apparently. Howard was apparently a violent, moody man who acted stiff towards Tony (he was also revealed to have been an alcoholic, giving Tony a legacy of addiction), while Maria was kinder and more loving. Tony grew up thinking his father didn't love him, while those close to Howard found his control over Tony's life (sending him to boarding school to "toughen him up" and interfering in his dating life, preventing him from dating the daughters of competitors) to be good parenting, I dunno. Despite his personal life, Howard was an ethical businessman, though he made a living creating munitions for the American government (he was retconned in as helping on The Manhattan Project).

-When they died in a car accident, Tony made his charitable organization "The Maria Stark Foundation". Various names have popped up over the years as possible perpetrators of the accident- the V-Battalion, Roxxon & HYDRA.

-A shitload of dumb backstory has since been added to them- Howard is now the founder of "The Brotherhood of the Shield", which became S.H.I.E.L.D. (alongside a time-travelling Leonardo da Vinci and Reed Richards's father Nathaniel). When Maria was pregnant, an in utero Arno was near-death, and so Howard sought out aliens, and the Rigellian Recorder 451 convinced him to "uplift" Arno to ensure he'd be able to helpt humanity grow technologically in order to survive confronting intergalactic empires in the future and be a force for peace in the universe. Howard reluctantly agreed, but broke the deal when he discovered a "killswitch" inside his son, and his interference caused Arno to become fatally ill. He was hidden away, and the Starks adopted a healthy son, WHO IS TONY, because you can't let sleeping dogs lie.

-Never mind that the Marvel Cinematic Universe made a big, big deal out of Howard, who appeared in Captain America and was a huge obsession of Tony's (Infinity War Part Two features a long conversation between a time-travelling Tony and his dad). We just DESPERATELY needed some imbecilic "EVERYTHING YOU KNOW IS WRONG!" pile of garbage to mess up Tony's history.
