Total: Abilities: 36 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 16 / Powers: 98 / Defenses: 8 (221)

-Almost as '90s as Death's Head II (if such a thing was possible), Death Metal lasted a much shorter period of time than his fellow Death-bots, and eventually just disappeared after a handful of appearances (including a crossover with bottom-tier Alpha Flight). He's just... so over-the-top. Look at him. A T-1000 rip-off AND a Death's Head rip-off, he's got split personalities, sharp teeth, and the ability to form any weapon he wants.

-Death's Head was bad enough, but Death Metal is virtually perverse. The guy made his debut by killing a parallel universe's Dr. Doom, Dr. Octopus AND Kingpin, just to prove how bad-ass and uncontrollable he was. He was the final "Minion" created by Dr. Necker, having used a piece from a Spawn of Charnel (Baron Strucker V/Death's Head I) combined with a Minion cyborg, producing this morphing, regenerating monster. He immediately swatted Necker away, and joined up with said Charnel, nearly killing everyone on an alternate Earth, including his "brothers" Death's Head II & Death Wreck, who had come to stop them. Ultimately, the crazy Death Metal killed the Hulk and nearly his "brothers" before Ghost Rider appeared, using his "Penance Stare" to stun DM, who was then given a conscience. Realizing the evil of Charnel, he turned on him, killing him alongside the bros.

-Naturally, a Death Metal Limited Series was soon released, oddly featuring him meeting Alpha Flight. Given a permanent conscience after assimilating a kind-hearted being named Argon, Death Metal stops his mindless rampage and now seeks his own death, feeling bad about how bad he's been. He was injured by Madison "Box" Jeffries and returned to savagery, but was stunned by Aurora's calming light and disappeared to prevent another such battle. Then, in Death Metal vs. Genetix, he fights another Marvel UK squad in an attempt to force a mutant woman to give birth to a child that can kill him- ultimately, he regains his conscience and is stopped. In his own book again, he tries to get himself killed fighting Techno-Wizards, but when he realizes they will then kill all the innocents on an alien world, he gives up his desire to die and fights them, teleporting away with new allies Brassknuckles & Spirit (who'd also wanted to die).

-Like Death's Head II, Death Metal a PL 11 monstrosity, but packs Variable powers, enhanced Initiative, Regeneration, and more general scariness. I wanted to make him lower-level, but it really doesn't suit what the guy's supposed to be capable of. He's so unkillable that he couldn't even find an opponent to properly kill him, in his more suicidal moments.

Total: Abilities: 54 / Skills: 44--22 / Advantages: 18 / Powers: 187 / Defenses: 11 (292)

-Randomly, a big villain of Death's Head II was Baron Strucker V, a villain from the far-off future of 2020, where he was offended by A.I.M. turning its back on the Strucker family. A Necromancer, he latched onto the original Death's Head's defeated body and took it over, slaughtered A.I.M., then grabbed a handy "Time Travel Belt" to come to our time and kill A.I.M. where it started. This led Death's Head II, Tuck, Dr. Necker and the Avengers of that future time to come back to the '90s and stop him- now calling himself "Charnel", he killed a few of them (including She-Hulk & Wolverine), but the Scarlet Witch used her hexes to control his time belt, splitting Charnel in half- half went to pre-history and half to the 30th century.

-Issues later, the half that went into pre-history had become the warrior Kite, who then re-merged and became Charnel again. Charnel easily fended off Death's Head II, Tuck & the Requiem Sharks, but Dr. Necker activated a psynapse control thing in his neck (which she'd placed on Kite when she turned him into a cyborg), shutting him down. They attempted to send him back in time, but he absorbed those energies to re-empower himself, but Death's Head II then shot him, overloading the villain and killing him. An oddly quick way of dealing with the guy who was the reason they were all in the past. Naturally, he reappeared AGAIN, but only in an alternate future where he dominates the Earth- here, the timeline is about to be wiped out by his death in the past, but Death's Head II, Death Wreck & Death Metal all encounter him, ultimately teaming up to kill him just as the timeline dies and they return home.

-Charnel is IMMENSELY powerful and hard to kill, as he regenerates nearly instantly and can use energy to fuel himself far past his limits, killing Alternate Universe Superheroes (who, of course, are much easier to kill than normal ones, but still). When he absorbs the Scarlet Witch's hex bolts, he gains near-infinite power, being able to reshape reality to his will, but naturally dies right after. He's also a Necromancer of some kind, but it just says "a variety of effects" and not exactly WHAT, so I gave him Ritualist.

Man, the amount of spinning off that poor Death's Head got into is almost comical. Also, they managed to misspell Charnel's name in one of those panels, wow.

-Kite is a random weirdo who shows up in Death's Head II's ongoing book, but is dealt with pretty quickly. It turns out, however, that he is the half of Charnel that was sent back into prehistoric times. Surviving until the present day, Kite wandered to the American town that was luring superhumans via the "Sapphire Lotus" magic item. Later, after just getting into random fights (this series used ANY excuse to show a guy killing other guys), he is found by Dr. Necker, who captures him and turns him into a Minion cyborg for some reason, fitting him with a synaptic disruptor so she can stop him if he turns on her. He escaped, using an A.I.M. time belt to go to the future, where he reconnected with his other half, re-forming into Charnel again. However, the disruptor that'd been placed on him before was what stopped the villain this time, as Necker could shut him down.

-Kite, in this form, is just some blade-handed doofus, handily losing a fight to Death's Head II (who, granted, is pretty powerful).

Wraithchilde

Post by Jabroniville »

"A thousand times them man I was...now everything is so clear...all my life I've been a silly joke, a sad, self-deluding sham, nourished on feeble dreams of power and mystery. But now, oh Tuck, but now...I know what it feels like to be a god."
-Wraithchilde, seconds after being KO'd by walking into a post.

WRAITHCHILDE (Dr. Philip Roth)
Created By:
Dan Abnett & Liam McCormick Sharp
First Appearance: Death's Head II #1 (Oct. 1992)
Role: One-Off Foe, Joke Turned Powerful
'90s Ratio: 7/10 (Has "Wraith" in his name; confusing backstory)
Group Affiliations: None

-This character is SUCH a good example of the awful stuff coming out of Marvel UK at the time- a random villain with no real motivation, nor character, and he shows up, becomes god-tier powerful, and is then killed all in the span of a handful of issues, never to appear again. Wraithchilde's origin is incredibly bizarre, too- see, Death's Head II's ongoing series debuted with a bunch of rand-os showing up in search of a Macguffin called the Sapphire Lotus, and most of them jobbed to DHII in a couple of panels apiece. Wraithchilde was used for a funny one-off gag, as she shows up with his Generic 1990s Villain get-up (scary mask, cape, boasting of his might- "I am the Chief Wonder of an Uncommon Universe! Nemesis of the World! Scourge of the Dark! Leviathan of the-- @#%!"), but DHII merely ignores him and keeps walking, leading Wraithchild to walk after him making his points again, but since he's not watching where he's going, he runs into a post and falls over, cursing. Yet only a handful of panels later, this joke is now hanging out with DHII's ally Tuck and the Lotus, both marveling over its power, and Wraithchilde now boasting that he's so much more than he once was! Like, in a COUPLE OF PAGES the joke immediately becomes another character entirely. It's bizarre.

-So Wraithchilde & Tuck become empowered and controlled by the Lotus, and he becomes infatuated with her, but they're removed from the Lotus and she starts to die. And the villain eventually finds the Lotus's creator, Phaedra, and takes over her pocket dimension using its might, which has unexpectedly (to her) empowered him to extreme levels. In the fourth DHII issue, he's now a God-Tier powerhouse, sending his regenerating "Raptor" army against DHII and the X-Men. They distract him by Phaedra disguising herself as Tuck and proclaiming her love for him, and then DHII grabs the Lotus and punches Wraithchilde with it- it's another overdose of its power (as he's already flush with it), and he's vaporized instantly. So all that work, all that hype, and all that power and he's essentially killed via O.D. And this four issues of work to put over the new bad guy ends up doing little- he never reappears. It might have just been an excuse to give Tuck some super-powers. Or to let artist Liam Sharp draw the naked alien babe Phaedra.

-Wraithchilde had no powers or abilities in his baseline form, but with the Sapphire Lotus had the default power every mega-villain had in the '90s- "Silver Surfer-tier Power". Super-strong, could KO Death's Head II with a single blast, and easily recover from being skewered by Wolverine.

Phaedra

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

PHAEDRA
Created By:
Dan Abnett & Liam McCormick Sharp
First Appearance: Death's Head II #1 (Oct. 1992)
Role: Miss Fanservice, Alien Goddess, Funny-Colored Space Babe
'90s Ratio: 7/10 (nudist; funny-colored space babe, inexplicable backstory)
Group Affiliations: The Raptors

-Okay, Phaedra is actually a HELL of a Fanservice design. I mean, hella-pervy and I can't believe this even got on the comic book racks (she's literally BARE-ASSED! You see her naked butt more than once!), but this anticipates hentai porn trends by like 25 years (uh, I mean, I bet!) with the tentacled head and odd skin color. I have a feeling that artist Liam Sharp just had this as a Sketchpad Character design and slapped it onto the "Excuse Plot" of Death's Head II- a new ongoing book.

-So Phaedra is this pink-skinned nudist with tentacles for hair and tiny diamonds of fabric over her nipples and vagina (and literally ONLY her nipples and vagina!). She's a God-tier being who created a home named Haven in a pocket dimension, and created the "Sapphire Lotus"- a way to increase her powers and extend her control over her entire realm. However, the Lotus was inexplicably stolen by the cosmic beings Lord Chaos & Master Order, who offered it as a prize for lesser beings to fight over. She was then abducted by a barbarian warrior who wanted her for her power to see the future, but he was slain by the Minion cyborg (pre-Death's Head), who assimilated his mind. Later, she sent her "Raptors"- regenerating super-agents- to capture the Lotus again, drawing in Wraithchilde, who'd been absorbing its power. This ended up empowering him a thousand-fold in her realm, which he then took over, chasing her away. Losing her powers, Phaedra allied with DHII and the X-Men, mimicking Tuck (whom Wraithchilde had feelings for) to distract him, and he was killed by the heroes. Phaedra repaid them all by sending them home and healing DHII's ally Tuck. She only appeared once more, helping Professor X & Tuck locate Death's Head II again.

-All in all, the character was kind of a waste, and the story made little sense. I mean... why did she need more power in her own Pocket Dimension? If she could create the device herself, why did she need it to gain more power? Why would COSMIC BEINGS randomly steal her Sapphire Lotus and make loser '90s characters fight over it? Why go to all the effort of writing the "Pocket Dimension" story and have Wraithchilde take it over when it would have been more easily-told as a "Random Macguffin" plot? Just to fill more space or show off your cool ideas?

-Phaedra presumably had a lot of power in her own realm- she can teleport between dimensions and had Precognitive powers, and could create "Cold Matter" bubbles (Snare/Create), Morph, and terraform things.

I should mention that I'm going to Disney World again in a couple of days- probably the last time for a little while, as they'll be refurbishing Splash Mountain and such for a while and it's expensive enough that it turns out I CAN'T go once a year and not starve after all, so I'll have to rebuild my bank account for a bit longer between trips, lol.

I'll still be posting on the regular, but the timing might be kinda screwy.

-The Raptors are Phaedra's creations- an army of regenerating Mooks with no personalities. In the story, they attack Wraithchilde & Tuck to reclaim Phaedra's stolen Sapphire Lotus, bringing Wraithchilde to Haven... which he promptly takes over, turning the Raptors to his side. They then act continually as easily-beaten Mooks for the X-Men & Death's Head II to fight- they lose constantly, but the fact that they regenerate from all harm means they're unstoppable, turning the X-Men into tattered-costumed, bleeding messes by the end- it's clear they're doomed if Wraithchilde isn't stopped, at least. Really, all they do is stall the heroes, but their unending horde is a real threat.

-The Raptors are said to be Class 25-75, but they job REALLY EASILY, meaning they're easy to hit and aren't that tough. The X-Men Blue Strike Force makes short work of them, taking little damage themselves. However, the fact that they immediately rise up and continue the fight makes them dangerous, as the unending nature of the threat will eventually kill the heroes through sheer attrition. It's said they could learn from past attacks and not fall to the same thing again, but they just seem like standard easily-fallen Mooks in the issues I have.

Well see, Jurassic Park had come out recently, so the name was both extreme and kewl.

-Pilgrim Kadagar is a background character in the Death's Head II stuff, and leads the "Kadagar" crime family. He is quickly revealed to be a robotic "golem" created by Mys-TECH, who wanted control over various power-players on Earth. He was unaware of his own golem-like nature, and learned of it after his gang encountered DHII, who killed some of them- an intervening cop named Hutch broke Pilgrim's wrist, revealing circuitry. Pilgrim investigated his own existence (and wanted to find the original Pilgrim) alongside DHII (whose ally, Tuck, had also been replaced by a golem) and Hutch, killing one Mys-TECH agent responsible and rescuing the real Pilgrim & Tuck. A Kadagar civil war threatened to break out, as they were now leaderless, but the golem committed suicide "for the clan", despite considering himself Death's Head's friend. The original then reappeared, preventing the war within the family.

-Pilgrim here believes he is the original, and seems to have all of his skills- he's a good knife-fighter and criminal.

-Heron is a one-off character met in the future by Death's Head II & Tuck- they hailed from Catspur, whose population was greatly diminished by a war between artificial beings. The entire population save Heron and her ally Noon were killed by the villain Cicatrice, who was hunting Death's Head II and wanted to cover up his involvement on the planet Lionheart. Blaming DHII, Heron & Noon captured him and planned on killing him after they used thim to gain necessary supplies. However, Noon turned out to be loyal to Cicatrice, but was still killed by the villain's agents when they came for Death's Head. Heron soon realized her error and teamed up with the hero, but was fatally wounded after the villain was chased off. She asked DHII to assimilate her mind, which he did so, hoping he could maybe find a new body for her.

-Heron was apparently very intelligent and had Class 10 strength in her cybernetic arm, but despite natural agility, claimed she wasn't much of a fighter.

Straight up? These characters and the stories they were in don't even read as the work of people who were inexperienced, or just not talented enough...they appear to be done by people who just didn't care about the work. Same with the art.

Either Marvel UK's rate were really low, and writers/artists couldn't afford to put in more than minimum time and effort, or the creators realized early on that the line was going to go nowhere and were just doing the work to build a resume for better projects. Everything reads as sloppy and half-thought out.

Just plain bad.

-Cicatrice was a large, green-skinned alien who fought a war against cyborgs as a general in the Ludite army. He attacked Death's Head II & Tuck on Lionheart (a planet of magic), and in an effort to cover his tracks, fired a laser that killed everyone on the planet Catspur but Heron & Noon. Noon turned out to be a mole for Cicatrice, but was still killed by the villain's men. Heron, DHII & Tuck allied and killed one of Cicatrice's bodies, but he revealed that he had dozens more, and would simply return in one of them next time. However, the books were cancelled so quickly he never reappeared, despite all this hype and potential power.

-Cicatrice was apparently RIDICULOUSLY powerful, with enough clone bodies to spread across the galaxy (UGH), and the ability to control all of them simultaneously, or leap between them as the "real" Cicatrice. He also had Class 50-75 strength & durability.
