-Sapphire has dark hair and a red costume that includes a single strap of fabric across her breasts, and another underneath them- fanservicey even for a Marvel UK character. She uses a spear that can deflect attacks and can also be a ranged weapon (presumably she then has to go and get it).

-Xena has purple hair in a high top-knot (sometimes having ONLY that for hair) and a darker costume with a web of fabric allowing her to glide. The most obviously related to the Web-Spinners, she has Spider-Man Lite abilities. Her energy webs actually trapped the Mys-Tech board for a time, but they did manage to break free. Another time, she "weaved a web" that amplified the power of some mercenary enemies of theirs, causing their weapons to overload, killing all of them!

The Anti-Being

Post by Jabroniville »

ImageImage

THE ANTI-BEING
Created By:
Bernie Jaye & Dell Barras
First Appearance: Dark Angel #10 (May 1993)
Role: Astral Vampire
'90s Ratio: 6/10 (vampire; inexplicable backstory)
Group Affiliations: None

-YET ANOTHER universe-threatening monster created in Marvel UK's short two-year run, the Anti-Being is an "astral vampire" that absorbs energy. It was created by the Mys-Tech board's "millennia of malevolence", forging it from pure negativity- the Web-Spinners (effectively like the Fates) felt its threat, realizing that its very presence would cause all of Earth to war with itself and put Dark Angel on the case. He stalked towards some vortex to allow himself to enter the physical world, but Dark Angel and the Wyrd Sisters attacked. He was made to bleed by Sapphire's spear, stunning him enough that Dark Angel teleported him into a cosmic void.

-There, he was confronted by Death's Head II, who'd also ended up there after absorbing part of the fabric of the universe- he managed to defeat the Anti-Being with this newfound power, then did his "siphon and absorb his skills & abilities" thing... which allowed the Anti-Being's negativity to take him over. They fought back and forth for control (in what appears to be scenes that are more comedic than dramatic, as it involves DHII randomly allying with or attacking the Techno-Wizards at MyS-TECH), until finally Dark Angel did a cosmic exorcism that cast out both the Anti-Being and the sliver of the fabric of the universe, and then he's re-exiled. So this thing is apparently supposed to threaten ALL EXISTENCE and he's easily defeated. TWICE! Yet another "the battle that threatens everything but is ended in seconds in a half-assed manner" story arc in Marvel UK's history.

-The Anti-Being has all sorts of random powers- it's strong and durable enough to brawl with Death's Head II, it can regenerate from harm, and it can absorb any kind of energy to empower itself- growing to thirty feet when absorbing Dark Angel's.

Giant Wrench +12 (+6 Damage, DC 21)
Initiative +4

Defenses:
Dodge +11 (DC 21), Parry +12 (DC 22), Toughness +5, Fortitude +7, Will +5

Complications:
Enemy (Other Bloodseeds)- Bloodseed must fight all of his "brothers", until only one remains. This is an instinctive reaction of Bloodseeds.
Relationship (Ellyssia)- Lysander seeks out his "beautiful queen", who is actually a member of his own race.
Responsibility (Controlled)- Bloodseed is an experiment, and has implanted memories.

Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 21 / Defenses: 14 (106)

-Bloodseed is some genetic creation of an ape-like race (at the behest of sentient descendants of dinosaurs, who'd escaped Earth before the meteor wiped the others out), doomed to wander around in a memory-less haze and fighting monsters, while all his fellow creations also had to kill him and each other to guarantee who will be the TRUE Bloodseed. It comes across as a very Conan-like "Wandering The World" story, with a solo shirtless barbarian hero fightin' 'round the globe. According to Marvunapp, Bloodseed was supposed to be in a four-part "Adult" series (which explains why one female character gets completely nude except for some metal pasties, and a Google search reveals nudity as Bloodseed beds various women), but it was cut into two 2-parters, the latter of which were cancelled (probably because the series was weird and silly and oh-so-mysterious), so we never saw the guy again. Despite that, he got a friggin' MARVEL CARD, so I'd always assumed he was a bigger deal to that universe than he was.

-So the deal with Bloodseed was that he had false memories implanted, so he was searching for a non-existant queen & kingdom, and had an instinctual need to kill any other members of his race. He was taken before a four-armed lady who immediately fell in love with him. However, realizing he had a greater destiny than being by her side, she wiped his memories and sent him away. He faced some demonic ape creatures, awakening with no injuries, then came across some ancient tech, including a giant monkey wrench he began to carry around as a weapon.

-Bloodseed rescued a "Bird-Thing" who had similar premonitions about Bloodseed's destiny, and that his people were created by "The Masters". He understood little of this, but used his Healing powers on the Bird-Thing and then later a monster that attacked him out of pain. The "Masters" were revealed to be the Gene-Corps (a race of simian-like aliens created by the dinos), and his "Queen" another member of his race- when he removed his helmet after being freed from their fake world, her instinctive bloodrush kicked in, and she attacked Bloodseed. While the two fought, a Gene-Corps member contacted the dinosaur Lord Juro as to where the last Bloodseed should be teleported to, and was directed to send the victor to Earth. And of course we never saw Bloodseed ever again.

-A little tough to do a build of such a vague guy (his Helmet of Truth could apparently be kinda-sentient, but really only helped him avoid illusions), but here's Bloodseed- a barbarian warrior with Healing & Telekinetic Powers.

I forgot that Bloodseed was grouped with the Marvel UK characters in the card set. He's was from Marvel's Frontier line, which was created to be Mavrel's version of Vertigo. I have the collection of all 13 Frontier books (which I got at Dollarama for 1/10 cover price).
Always ask before you use someone's Original Character.
Never ever use them without permission. Only Villains do that.

-Tangerine only appeared briefly in Alan Davis' run on Excalibur, living in the Days of the Future Past timeline, and the shy young girl sported a unique look with goggles and a huge orange afro. She got an Earth-616 version in Captain Britain & M.I.-13, with a much more sarcastic, leather-clad version. It says she just got back from a fight with the Mandarin- amazingly, I did not get that gag until Marvunapp pointed it out (Tangerine vs. Mandarin!!). A silly name, but she's a half-decent PL 8 with her Perception-Range effects and Psychometry. Just don't expect her to take a punch or anything.

-OK, this guy actually looks pretty cool- that is a BAD-ASS character design, and his whole Shadow/Spider "dark vigilante" thing is pretty cool for a modern hero. Created for Marvel UK as a deliberate callback to the era of grim "Pulp Heroes" (he even left a distinctive scar on his victims like the Spider did), he was one of their top guys in the '80s- Alan Moore did stories featuring him. He became this hyper-scarred murderous hero, driven a bit nuts by constant pain thanks to his Immortality. Y'know, what the grim 'n' gritty era tended to create. His backstory is said to be "a mess", with a ton of contradictory stories told just about his past.

-His origin story is that he's a half-Mohawk orphan from Southern Alberta at the turn of the 20th century, and lost his mind during the Great War- shell-shock took him before a bullet could. Recovering and moving to New York City, he became a detective and vigilante, and eventually took a concoction from the "Yellow Peril/Dragon Lady" villainess Yi Yang that made him ageless. This left him also constantly wracked with pain. He engaged in numerous stories in the various compilations of Marvel tales done by Marvel UK (they reprinted the American stuff in haphazard collections, making some books hard to read)- he was often one of many stories in a collection. Overall, the character lasted from 1979-1986, written by Steve Parkhouse for a year, then Maxwell Stockbridge for a few- later names Paul Neary & Alan Moore also wrote some stories, Alan getting a single arc. All of these were typically done only a handful of pages at a time, it seems (descriptions online are very short). In 1986 he vanished, and his last thing of note was in a contemporary story in a 1995 Graphic Novel featuring Nick Fury & Black Widow- he and Yi Yang appear to die fighting each other, but neither's body is found.

-Of course, I've never read a story featuring him, so this is all Bio-based stuff, but he's a hyper-skilled PL 9 type with guns and an insanity-inducing V-scar thing on his wrist that leaves a mark on his enemies, and possibly drives them insane.

Yi Yang has since appeared in the Wolverine comic as part of the 'Unkillables' group so it's very possible Night Raven survived as well.

The Knights of Pendragon

Post by Jabroniville »

Image
Image

THE KNIGHTS OF PENDRAGON
Created by:
Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning & Jim Tomlison
First Appearance: The Knights of Pendragon #1 (July 1990)
Role: English Planeteers

-The Knights are a bunch of regular people given powers by the Champion Spirit of Pendragon, which has empowered people for millennia. And hilariously, they have the exact same origin as the Planeteers of Captain Planet fame, only with the Green Knight summoning some environmentalist warriors instead of Gaea- Spirit of the Earth. And the Green Knight murdered numerous CEOs of polluting companies instead of lecturing cartoon super-villains.

So in any case, The Knights of Pendragon were created in 1990, a bit ahead of the more stereotypical "Marvel UK" books, with this environmentalist bent- the Green Knight was disgusted by mankind's greed and maliciousness towards wildlife and the environment, and so went to war against polluters. A man whose corporation killed thousands of beluga whales a day was slaughtered, a fruit company CEO was vacuum packed and irradiated like his preserved fruit was, and more! People in London started to die or catch diseases in London, provoking an investigation led by Dai Thomas (a cop ally of Excalibur's). Tailed by nosy reported Kate McClellan and others such as Captain Britain, he looks up the various deaths for a few issues- it soon became clear that they were all being possessed by the spirits of the Knights of the Round Table.

Captain Britain, possessed by Lancelot, who often raged in battle, was made to kill Dai in combat, much to his shame and regret- however, Dai was reborn as Gawain and the heroes were fully empowered, helping the Green Knight fight "The Bane"- agents of the Red Lord, the Green Knight's opposite and a destructive force. Other people began to join the group, such as Albion, Ben Gallagher, Kate's son, and a new Union Jack as they do a long "Building the Party" story arc and mystery thing as they try to figure out what's going on. Soon enough, they figure out the whole story. The Red Lord was formed in our world by his herald, Francesca Grace (who draws Iron Man into things, as they were business partners), and in the final issue of the first series, Ben is killed saving Union Jack's life and the villain is beaten. Knights of Pendragon thus ends with #18, but soon gets restarted numbers for some reason.

In the new book, Breeze James and others join up, and Francesca is recruited, having broken the control of the Red Lord. They go on further adventures involving Death's Head II and others, but Knights of Pendragon #15 is the final issue. Albion for some reason pops up in other books, showing up in MyS-TECH Wars and Dark Guard as an important figure, joining the latter team. But all in all, the book only lasts three years and the characters pretty well vanish forever. Not a bad run for a Marvel UK book as it had a head-start on the others, but still it ended up being pretty meaningless. Andy Lanning would later write a mini-series Revolutionary War in 2014, bringing back a couple of them (re-empowering Dai and having Albion & Kate show up). The notion of the Knights of the Round Table forming bestowing powers on a bunch of normal people (plus heroes like Union Jack, Captain Britain and others in one-offs) is kind of interesting and a good set-up for a superhero team, though.

Relationship (Kate McClellan)- Kate & Dai were on the "Knights of Pendragon" together, and their rivalry eventually turned to love.

Total: Abilities: 28 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 35 / Defenses: 7 (91)

Dai Thomas- One Of Those Backgrounders:
-Dai Thomas ("Dai" is likely short for the Welsh Dafyyd, which of course is pronounced "Davith" because someone decided to royally f*ck the translations of Welsh to English) is a Welsh policeman who frequently quarreled with Captain Britain in his UK stories. He had initially shown up in a Blade story written by Chris Claremont- a Scotland Yard detective who was annoyed at Blade always bringing in dead vampires (which were now corpses) as it caused a lot of people to freak out- Blade ended up punching him after an argument, but Dai & his partner Kate (who had psychometry) still managed to spring him from a frame-job. He later pops up in the Captain Britain stuff as a more standard "Hero Hater"- it was established that Dai's wife had been killed when they visited New York and a building collapsed on them during one of Thor and the Hulk's fights.

-Saying publicly that all heroes just leave death & destruction in their wakes, Dai opposed Capt. Britain and frequently fought to have him arrested. He even realized physical similarities between Brian Braddock & Capt. Britain and pieced together evidence (such as similar overlapping territories) suggesting they were the same man, but was disregarded by his superiors (who, to be fair, had by this point dismissed him as a "Hero Hater" and a crackpot due to his obsession). The character disappears for a few years, but in Alan Davis's stories, the two men came to a better relationship, as Dai had been "promoted" into a different unit to essentially get him out of the way, but his investigation into a gang war led to the discovery of a superhuman perpetrator, and many of his own men were slain. Humbled and scared, Dai reluctantly turned to Braddock for help- there was an initial argument (Dai always had a temper) but Dai apologized and said he had nowhere else to turn. Ultimately, Brian defeats the monstrous creature and saves Dai's life in the process, and the two men part as friends.

Excalibur To The Knights of Pendragon:
-Only a couple years later, Excalibur debuts, done by Claremont (Dai's creator) and Davis (the last writer), and so Dai Thomas becomes the "Human Ally" of the new superteam. He helps them against the Warwolves, and later becomes the token "Local Cop Annoyed By Government Investigators" as the Weird Happenings Organization investigate stuff in his area. He is threatened by the Nazi Captain Britain, investigates various odd things, and more, but is just a minor character appearing once or twice a year.

-Then suddenly Dai becomes a character in Dan Abnett's Knights of Pendragon, a book featuring various people being transformed into superhumans by the spirits of the Knights of the Round Table! Possessed by Sir Gawain's spirit, Dai becomes superpowered and investigates various things. He is temporarily killed after the spirits force him and Captain Britain into a bloody brawl, but is reborn as Gawain before losing his powers and taking his original form. Unpowered, he helps out in the last few issues of the series (and briefly dates nosy reporter Kate McClellan after one of those standard-issue "Slap Slap Kiss" couplings), and appears only once in the second. He gets a few more shots in Excalibur in the early '90s (now by Alan Davis alone) before disappearing, showing up in the final issue of the series five years later (1998). Subsequent appearances were only minor one-offs by guys like Claremont until the Revolutionary War mini-series by Abnett, which actually BROUGHT BACK the "Knights" stuff and had Gawain posess Dai repeatedly! He was again felled in battle fighting Zombie King Arthur and his Zombie Knights, but rose as regular old Dai again. Along the way, he & Kate formed a relationship again, him saying he'd always loved her. This has been his last appearance.

Such a Long Bio For Such a Minor Character:
-So overall, he's another one of those weird side characters- an off-and-on rival to Captain Britain until Alan Davis has them become fast friends, bonding over mutual dislikes of other people in their world, and Brian saving his life. Then he's one of the "Human Contacts" in Excalibur (though not a major character)... and randomly a superpowered guy in a weird, forgotten book, before going back to normal before being mostly forgotten as "one of those supporting guys". He's probably best served by having powerful names like Claremont, Davis & Abnett/Lanning gunning for him, as typically these characters get left behind entirely. His gruff pragmatism is a bit amusing, but he's such a stock character much of the time that despite owning MANY comics featuring him, I'd forgotten about him entirely and had never properly statted him up (nor recognized him when I actually did my original Knights of Pendragon bio!).

Dai's Stats:
-Dai Thomas is your typical Comic Book Cop, but definitely no match for a major supervillain (a few early stories show just how outclassed he and other cops are against supernatural threats). In Knights of Pendragon, he gains the same boosts as other characters get, and becomes a PL 7-8 warrior (ordinarily, he's PL 3-5). He's a burly, chubby guy past his physical prime, but large and tough enough for regular Mooks.
