-Possibly an Australian Aborigine-descended guy, a great deal is made of just how mysterious Scavenger was. In the backstory of the comic, he had once saved the Dragon after he was badly injured, and left without saying a word- he was then recruited into the Claws. In the opening issue, he & Dragon are the only two who aren't captured by their first foes, marking him as a bit "above"- I thus made him PL 8 defensively like Dragon.

-Naturally, a Japanese guy in the 8000s is a samurai. He's all honorable and junk, and wields a sword. The Dragon had once saved his life in Japan, and recruited him into the team when Megaton left.

Skire

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

LOL, speaking of guys made up entirely of "1990s Villain" tropes- here's a dude with spiked shoulder blades, a skull mask, pointy "Wolverine Ears" on his mask, a skull on his suit, metal and spiky bits everywhere, meaningless coils of metal that don't actually do anything, a ponytail, and more.

SKIRE (Real Name Unknown)
Created by:
Dan Abnett, John Tomlison & John Royle
First Appearance: The Knights of Pendragon #12 (June 1993)
Role: One-Off Villain
Group Affiliation: MyS-TECH
PL 10 (108)

Skills:
Expertise (Assassin) 6 (+6)

Advantages:
All-Out Attack, Power Attack, Ranged Attack 6

Powers:
"Skire Armor" (Flaws: Removable) [41]
Enhanced Strength 7 (14)
Protection 7 (11)

Electrical Aura 8 (Flaws: Limited to a Few Rounds) (24) -- (26)
  • AE: "Spike Blasters" Blast 6 (Extras: Multiattack) (18)
  • AE: "Iron Maiden" Strength-Damage +1 (Extras: Penetrating 7) (8)

Skire Armor +8 (+10 Damage, DC 25)
Iron Maiden +8 (+11 Damage, DC 26)
Spike Blasters +8 (+6 Ranged Damage, DC 21)
Initiative +3

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +4 (+11 Armor), Fortitude +6, Will +4

Complications:
Motivation (Causing Pain)- Skire appears to be a hired killer who enjoys killing others.

Total: Abilities: 40 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 41 / Defenses: 11 (108)

-Skire is a one-off foe who shows up in the second Knights of Pendragon series- boasting that he is the "King of Pain", he shows up in special armor and works for MyS-TECH, hired to take out the Knights so they won't stop their "Un-Earth" plan. Skire easily no-sells Breeze's punch and nearly pulls her apart, then one-punches Union Jack to death after the hero saves Breeze. He then blows out Sir Gawain via "Iron Maiden" spikes from his chest and no-sells an attack from the rest of the Knights combined, then kills Francesca Grace when she leaps on his back, electrocuting her! Albion is run through and nearly killed, but the Green Knight, sensing what was happening, empowered Adam Crown to blow the villain away with one swords-stroke, then resurrected the rest of the team. So a very cheap, one-off battle with no real stakes.

-Skire is a very powerful opponent with a boatload of powers, able to annihilate the PL 8-9 Knights of Pendragon with ease in quick succession- they're weaksauce heroes, but still. He does lose to an empowered Crown solo, but it's hard to get a read on him otherwise.

Magpie

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

MAGPIE (Real Name Unknown)
Created by:
Dan Abnett, John Tomlison & Phil Gascoine
First Appearance: The Knights of Pendragon #3 (Sept. 1992)
Role: Evil Mercenary
Group Affiliation: MyS-TECH (Hired Gun)

-Magpie was a super-powered hired gun sent by MyS-TECH to acquire one of the Knights of Pendragon, whose book by now had hit the time where the REST of the Marvel UK line debuted. Magpie was out to capture the robotic Gawain, which brought in Iron Man (who had built it), but Magpie took out Iron Man with one hit (!!) and then held off all the Knights by himself. Adam Crown realized they had to be just as brutal and ruthless as Magpie, and so threw Caliburn at him, impaling the villain. Magpie simple pulled the sword out and teleported away, regenerating from harm. He was fended off by Dai Thomas issues later, but stole a Knights vehicle and went to Avalon, where he beat some of them. However, Francesca Grace convinced him that Avalon had a radiation fatal to anyone not wearing their specific armor, and Magpie wasn't willing to risk her telling the truth and teleported away, ending up in front of the Red Lord himself.

-Magpie however managed to ally with the Red Lord, and even Death's Head II (who had been hired to bring them in for false crimes against an alien world). However, he abandoned the battle once it got hairy, and DHII tracked him and fought him upon realizing he was summoning the Red Lord to the alien world! Eventually the Knights & aliens teamed up against them all- the Red Lord was cast back to his portal by Adam Crown's sacrifice, and DHII threw Magpie in after him. He has never reappeared.

-Magpie is your classic "Marvel UK" villain- all this power at first, then he's kinda just not as tough and easier to defeat later. He's super-strong (Class 10-25?) and has claws that can one-shot IRON MAN, then he fights all the Knights of Pendragon by himself, but is weaker later and even bullets hurt him.

The Super-Soldiers

Post by Jabroniville »

Image
Image

THE SUPER-SOLDIERS:
-This curious little Marvel UK series uses essentially the most generic concept the comic book world has to offer: Government Super-Soldiers. The characters were empowered by genetic modifications similar to what created the insane Nuke over in the States (because why NOT use that disaster as the basis for loyal agents?). The characters are British super-soldiers, part of a unit that was disbanded years ago after their leader Childs went crazy and killed half the unit- Joseph Hauer, one of two survivors (the other was Dalton), was placed in suspended animation. Finally breaking free, Hauer allied with U.S. Agent & Dalton, then convinced one of Childs's new teammates (Gog) to switch sides. They all were joined by Captain America and Childs was killed in the ensuing battle. The resulting team was called the "Super-Soldiers" and were thus effectively reinstated with Sarah Wilde, a journalist, as their advisor.

-In the sixth & seventh issues, they gained three new members- Guvnor, Dragonfly & Xantia, while searching for some "super-poppies" that were at the heart of a bloody martial arts tournament. These new characters, unlike the originals, were mostly "jokes"- a Blaxpoitation hero, a soccer hooligan, and a Savage Land jungle queen. The series only lasted eight issues, being canceled after one story arc as the entire Marvel UK line crashed and burned around it. In the final issue, they were privatised and their contracts sold to the Mercy Corporation as an "autonomous superhero response unit". However, they only wanted superhuman operatives, so Sarah, Xantia & Dragonfly had to leave.

-Apparently, years after they were disbanded, a film was made about their lives, featuring some of the cast performing in it (it was, naturally, awful). The team is now considered a band of embarrassing relics, and Pete Wisdom openly disrespects them (given his status as a Warren Ellis Stand-In, I hardly consider that damning criticism). The entire team was slaughtered in a sacrifice play against demons from Hell, led by Killpower- this mostly just establishes that these are all jokes that even the Marvel UK people hated.

Temper ("The Red")- Like Nuke, Hauer sees "Red" when excited, turning him into a violent, hyper-aggressive warrior. The "White" brings him down, while the "Blue" helps keep him steady once the rush wears off. These all happen as automatic biological processes.

Total: Abilities: 82 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 4 / Defenses: 8 (119)

-The Team Leader of the Super-Soldiers, Hauer was given powers similar to Daredevil's Nuke- seeing "Red" when angry and then "White" and "Blue" to calm him down. However, he was far more controlled tahn Nuke, as he wasn't an insane killer and his processes were all automatic. He was injured when his leader, Childs, turned on the crew during a firefight- one of only two survivors, he returned with allies and killed Childs. He reappeared as a background character during Civil War, hanging out with Pete Wisdom & Captain Britain. The sole survivor of the invasion from Hell. He shares the same powers as Dalton, but has a very fatalistic outlook on life, and a willingness to kill just about anyone in order to succeed in his mission.

-Dalton was a member of Hauer's initial group, and was shot and injured by their leader, Childs, when he went nuts. Hauer found him in the jungle when he went back, as Dalton had been living with some monks in Thailand and had used his genetic alterations to take an extra level into meditation. He initially refused to use violence, but was finally convinced to help his allies, though spared Gog, gaining them a new ally. He thus joined a new "Super-Soldiers" squad. Despite this, and what was an impressive arsenal, he became a "zen martial artist" type who rejected weaponry and fought unarmed. He's known for being a fraud and a charlatan, planning on starting a New Age fad and getting rich & laid, despite having little interest in New Age anything.

-Dalton, like Hauer, uses a modified version of Nuke's red, white & blue pills, but uses them internally via a drug-producing device that has replaced his appendix. The "red" increases his aggression, the "white" brings him down, and the "blue" keeps him relaxed. He also has limited Telepathic powers, but they're quite unpracticed.

Defenses:
Dodge +5 (DC 15), Parry +5 (DC 15), Toughness +4 (+10 Protection), Fortitude +5, Will +4

Complications:
Responsibility (The British Government)
Addiction (Drugs)- When the team burn a field of "Super-Poppies" that give powers via opium, Guvnor declares it "a waste".

Total: Abilities: 38 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 26 / Defenses: 7 (90)

-Guvnor is a "rowdy mutant" (ie. a soccer hooligan type with a history of drug abuse and an "All Coppers Are Bastards" tattoo on his arm) with little experience, but the handy power to take all kinds of damage, and redirecting it as Strength. His backstory featured Professor Xavier arriving at his home to recruit him to the X-Men, but his parents assumed that this bald American wanting to bring their son to "boarding school" was a pervert and so they and some townsfolk chased him away, jeering at him and throwing stones (hey, are we sure Ennis didn't write this?). Guvnor instead became a generic lout, and used his powers to win fights for money- he was recruited into The Warlord's fighting tournament, and was thus recruited by the Super-Soldiers. Guvnor's known for being both violent, and a huge coward- he cares for little but himself.

-Guvnor is essentially "Strong Guy Lite", absorbing machine gun fire and running into a brick wall and converting it into super-strength. He has crappy Defenses thanks to this, but is still PL 7.5-ish. Just dumb and kinda useless compared to his allies. We never even get to see his limits- the very issue after he joins the team is the book's last.

-The huge Gog was a Welshman member of the "Squadies"- a new band formed by Childs to replace the Super-Soldiers. However, while Hauer killed all the Squadies when they were knocked out, Dalton chose to spare Gog, destroying what he assumed was a control unit. He was correct, and Gog joined the Super-Soldiers. It turned out that he was injured during the Falklands War, and his daughters grew up without him, turning into criminals. This is actually kinda funny, since I've heard that in England, the Welsh are stereotyped as more or less what "White Trash" are like in the States, living in depressive conditions and being addicted to things and engaging in petty theft. So Gog's family life might be a reference to that. He's generally nice and "neighborly", belying his odd appearance.

-Despite being much larger than the rest of the team, Gog is the same Strength as Dalton & Hauer. He has red, bionic eyes but it's not clear if they can do anything special.

-A black martial arts master, Dragonfly (the third Marvel character by this name- both the female Ani-Men member and a Euroforce member went by this name) trained himself into "hibernating" in meditation since the 1970s (since he saw no challenges in his own time), which made him look like a Blaxploitation hero. He's actually apparently a huge jive-talkin' stereotype, out for kicks and proving himself to be the greatest, and is only heroic to advance his own name. One of the few comic book martial artists to have a "Dim Mak" death touch technique, though as he's appeared in about three individual comic books, he hasn't had much of an opportunity to use it.

-Because it's the 1990s, the only female member of the team of course fights in a Combat Bikini and has a nasty attitude. And because it's English humor, that's her real name. Xantia hails from the Savage Land, but came to England after her entire tribe was exterminated. She trains with soldiers in order to some day gain her revenge with modern skills, and joins the Super-Soldiers when they all meet up in the Savage Land and she murders the man responsible. Like Dragonfly & Sarah, Xantia was not offered a Super-Mercenary job like the other Super-Soldiers because she lacked superhuman powers- instead, she was offered a role on a real-life American Gladiators knock-off from England (called, appropriately enough, simply Gladiators).

-Xantia is more of a bad-ass swordfighter than anything else, hitting PL 7 as a scrapper-type.
