MISTER SINISTER
Created By:
Jerry Siegel & Leo Nowak
First Appearance: Superman #16 (May-June 1942)
Role: One-Off Villain, Otherdimensional Robber

-Sharing a name with Marvel's X-villain of some repute, this guy was a one-off villain from 1942 with a penchant for rhyming. Hailing from the 4th Dimension, he made repeated demands for money, using his people's vast technology (or his own powers?) to teleport things to his dimension. He swiped a brand-new skyscraper, demanding $100,000 for its return. He robs a bank by teleporting it away, looting it, then returning it, then abducts the entire Daily Planet staff. Clark Kent is tied to a chair, but moves too quickly to be seen and changes into his Superman costume- the thugs think Clark has vanished, and are beaten. Mr. Sinister uses a powerful cannon that stuns Superman, but later tries to shoot him after a fight, and Superman punches him- the gun drops and fires at Sinister, leaving behind only a shadow.
I never heard of this DC Mister Sinister before.

Maybe that shadow....moved over to the Marvel Universe...as the X-Men foe???? :o

$100, 000 was a ton of money back in 1942. :ugeek:

Spanking was like THE way to punish children in the before time. It was a very real fear for kids, and they’d no doubt have delighted in Superman proving immune to such things :).

LANA LANG (aka The Insect Queen)
Created By:
Bill Finger & John Sikela
First Appearance: Superboy #10 (Sept. 1950)
Role: The Love Rival (to Lois), Childhood Girlfriend (to Superman)

Lana's Stats:
-Lana is a pretty basic Backgrounder, but a bit more survivable than most. As the Insect Queen, she had the ability to gain the lower half of any insect or arachnid and swipe their powers.
I remember reading a story about an adult Lana who returned to Metropolis still chasing Superman. The story involved another former classmate of Lana and Clark designing a new superprison and wanting to impress Lana and then becoming the villain Warden(?) when she still only had eyes for Superman leading to Superman having to rescue her and ending with him flying away after calling her out on ignoring all her friends from Smallville.

Barrage

Man he's only barely less lame than the OTHER guy missing hands named Barrage.

BARRAGE (Phillip Karnowsky)
Created By:
John Byrne
First Appearance: Superman Annual #2 (Aug. 1988)
Role: Forgotten Jobber Villain
Group Affiliations: The Superman Revenge Squad
PL 8 (100)
STRENGTH
2/8 STAMINA 4 AGILITY 3
FIGHTING 8 DEXTERITY 4
INTELLIGENCE 1 AWARENESS 2 PRESENCE 3

Skills:
Deception 2 (+5)
Expertise (Criminal) 5 (+6)
Intimidation 3 (+6)
Perception 2 (+4)

Advantages:
Ranged Attack 4, Startle

Powers:
"Barrage Powersuit" (Flaws: Removable) [27]
Enhanced Strength 6 (12)
Protection 4 (4)
"Shock Absorbers" Immunity 1 (Falling Damage) (1)
"Energy Cannon" Blast 8 (16)
-- (33 points)

Offense:
Unarmed +8 (+2 Damage, DC 17)
Energy Cannon +8 (+8 Ranged Damage, DC 23)
Initiative +3

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +4 (+8 Armor), Fortitude +5, Will +4

Complications:
Motivation (Greed)
Enemy (Maggie Sawyer)- Barrage holds Sawyer in enmity for arresting him, as well as the loss of his right arm.
Disabled (One-Armed)

Total: Abilities: 54 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 27 / Defenses: 8 (100)

-Barrage was a criminal who lost his right arm during his arrest at the hands of Maggie Sawyer. While imprisoned on Stryker's Island, he was able to gain favors from his fellow inmates and escaped, getting armor that allowed him to exhibit super-strength and blasts. He confronted Maggie, but was beaten by Superman. He reappeared on the "Superman Revenge Squad", but was again rounded up, and has been completely forgotten. The silly "curvy arm-cannon" arm probably does him no favors.

-Barrage is a barebones, under-pointed, PL 8 Blaster- the kind of guy you see in the background comics at Marvel, not DC (until Marvel-style writers like Wolfman & Byrne came in and started "muddying" the elements between companies). He's a dire threat to police officers like Maggie, but certainly no match for even Byrne's incarnation of the Man of Steel.

It's around 1.8 million in today's money. Life changing money, but not riches beyond the dreams of avarice.

The character is mostly interesting for coming along about two years before an enemy from another numbered dimension, who has stuck around a lot longer.

Erm, no. I think it would be more like $5 Billion.

Remember, back then, average yearly incomes were $500. $1000 if someone was lucky. $100,000 is 100,000 times the yearly income of $1000.

Today, there is all kinds of numbers for the average yearly income, but if we use the $50,000 I saw, then that is indeed $5 Billion. (100,000 X $50,000)

Marvel's Mister Sinister did not appear until 1987, some 45 years later.

No it isn't? It's 100,000 is 1000*100. Hence the "hundred" in the hundred thousand.

Your example of today's average, 50k, would give only 5 million dollars. Not billion. Lotta money. Life changing for most. But that's decent Hollywood and pro sports athlete money, not megacorp exec money.

The villain you're thinking of was the Master Jailer (Carl Draper).

Also, post-Crisis, Lana was brainwashed by the alien robots the Manhunters as a way to monitor Clark Kent before he became Superman.
Always ask before you use someone's Original Character.
Never ever use them without permission. Only Villains do that.

The Silver Age Bizarro

"I was striving, you might say, for that mirror-image, that opposite. And out of a machine which would reveal the negative Superman, came the mirror image – always remembering that in a mirror everything is reversed... The times were such that one-dimensional characters, your standard superheroes, even in comics, seemed rather simplistic, like paper cut-outs. What was demanded was the full dimensional personality – a figure that carried a shadow, if you like. I was certainly inspired to some degree also by C. G. Jung's archetype of "the shadow" – and Bizarro certainly reflected that, as well."
-Superman newspaper strip writer Alan Schwartz, on creating Bizarro

Bizarro- The Superman Clone:
-Bizarro is an ever-lasting constant in the life of the Man of Steel, appearing in most long-running adaptations- he's even famous enough that an entire Seinfeld episode featured an ongoing reference to him, when Elaine met another crew of friends, headed by a "Bizarro-Jerry". Though Seinfeld (a HUGE Superman fan in real life) made sure to reference to how Bizarro is the opposite of Superman in every way, with Elaine "That Guy"-ing him with "Does everyone live underwater? IS HE BLACK?" to tease him. But really, the character is ridiculously silly, which allows writers to indulge their comic chops (though most comic book writers are actually pretty shitty comedians- this is why "Comedy Books" are usually pretty god-awful; the REAL comedians are in stand-up and sitcoms).

-Bizarro actually started out in Superboy, and was a Frankenstein's Monster-thing that had all the powers of Superboy- appearing with lines all over his pale body in a pastiche of the "patchwork" look, Bizarro was shunned, and only lasted one story. So it turns out that if you clone Kryptonians, you get "Bizarros"- ugly, pasty-faced clones that lack intelligence. General Dru-Zod had created an army of them on Krypton, which was why he was initially exiled to the Phantom Zone. Ignorant to this fact, a scientist in Smallville demonstrated his "Duplicating Ray" to young Superboy, but an accident created a Superboy clone! Surprising everyone by taking this same appearance, "Bizarro" is shunned, but befriends a blind girl named Melissa (which also makes him feel bad- the only reason she didn't flee was because she couldn't see him). Superboy is eventually forced to kill his deranged copy by using the machine to make "Blue Kryptonite", which has the effect green kryptonite has on him. The explosion, however, restores Melissa's eyesight (SCIENCE!).

Bizarro #1:
-An adult version of Bizarro popped up around the same time for the Superman daily newspaper strip, lasting for the back half of 1958- writer Alan Schwartz claims to have come up with the concept himself. The strip introduced most of the "Iconic" Bizarro trademarks, such as the "B" on his chest, reversings words to mean the opposite ("bad" means "good" and vice-versa). 1959 saw the adult version appear in Action Comics, created by Lex Luthor's own Duplicating Ray- he goes on an accidental rampage, while bemoaning his own creation ("Me don't know difference between right and wrong- good and evil!")- a true "antihero", or pathetic monster story. He falls in love with Lois Lane, but she cleverly uses the ray to make a "Bizarro-Lois" for Bizarro, who happily flies off with her. Bizarro proved so popular so quickly that a Bizarro World feature ran in Adventure Comics for fifteen issues (1961-62), as he uses a ray to make even MORE Bizarros, calling himself "Bizarro #1" and ruling a cube-shaped planet where everyone is forced to act the opposite of normal humans. He & Bizarro-Lois even have a child who looks completely human- this causes a mess on Bizarro World. Soon there's a Bizarro-Supergirl (briefly), and Bizarro fights a Bizarro-Titano, too. Jimmy Olsen becomes a Bizarro for a time, and a Teen Bizarro tries to join the Legion of Super-Heroes in the future.

-All in all, Bizarro made 40 appearances in the Silver & Bronze Age... which actually doesn't sound like that much for a recurring villain with that longevity. I'm guessing he was a bit of a "fad" and died out a bit here and there- an all-Bizarro Giant comic was released in 1968, for example- a bit of a gap between that and Bizarro World. The sheer glut of spin-offs is a very "DC" thing to do- chasing what's popular by replicating the absolute shit out of it until the bottom falls out and nobody cares anymore (see: Krypto, Streaky, Beppo & Comet; Marvel would do the same thing with the X-Books eventually).

Future Bizarros:
-When Bizarro next meets Superman, the writers cleverly start giving him "opposite" powers to Superman, like Freeze Vision and Heat Breath. He temporarily joins the Secret Society of Super Villains and fights the Justice League, finally becoming a villain. In Alan Moore's imaginary story Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?, he goes berserk and destroys the Bizarro World and commits suicide (I still remember his final words: "Hello, Superman... hello."). His real final Pre-Crisis appearance features Mr. Mxyzptlk being controlled into destroying the Bizarro World, killing all its inhabitants- Bizarro's severed head crashes into Clark Kent's desk and addresses him before expiring. For this reason, Bizarro is one of very few famous characters to not appear in Crisis on Infinite Earths- he's already dead.

Bizarro's Might:
-Bizarro is nearly as powerful as the Silver Age Superman, making him a remarkably strong PL 14 fighter. One version reverses the Heat & Freeze powers.

Post-Crisis Bizarro:
-John Byrne reintroduced Bizarro as soon as he could, showing up in 1986 when Lex Luthor tried to clone Superman (not realizing he was an alien at the time)- the clone is imperfect and has poor memories, and kidnaps Lois Lane, being destroyed when he collides with Superman in mid-air- Lane's sister, blinded in a terrorist attack, is exposed to the dust of Bizarro's body and regains her sight in an homage to Bizarro's debut appearance. 1994 saw the release of a Bizarro's World that ran through all the Superman titles in March & April 1994, featuring Luthor's creation "Bizarro II", who kidnaps Lois and deliberately exposes her to harm before "rescuing" her from the same danger, before ultimately dying himself. A. Bizarro, about a regular man cloned as a Bizarro, got a 4-issue limited series in 1999- I remember this hyped in EVERY FREAKING COMIC DC relased at the time, making me dislike it immediately.

-Another Bizarro was created by Lex Luthor's estranged wife Contessa Portenza and Dabney Donovan- it abducted Lex's baby daughter Lena and tried to send her away in a rocket (mimicking Superman's origin story), but the rocket launch would have killed her. Superman saved the day and Bizarro III died in the explosion (he was already doomed, via a "genetic booby trap" deliberately installed at his creation).

-In the 2000 Emperor Joker storyline, where Joker gained the cosmic power of Mr. Mxyzptlk, and created a new Bizarro, who stuck around in DC in that incarnation ever since. This version was a lot darker- a crazed, easily-led monster, he was part of Alexander Luthor's Secret Society in Infinite Crisis, using his powers to murder the Human Bomb, enjoying the "pretty lights" as he bludgeoned the hero to death. However, he later abandons Earth and creates a cube-shaped planet and uses "Bizarro Vision" to create new clones of himself. But this fails, and he kidnaps Superman's father until Supes himself arrives to teach Bizarro how to be a proper hero.

Bizarro's Powers:
-This version of Bizarro is PL 13-ish- able to effortlessly defeat low-rent losers like the Freedom Fighters and act as a brutal challenge for even professional superheroes. Even a flawed, stupid clone of Superman is still incredibly dangerous.
