The Minions of Apocalypse

THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF APOCALYPSE & THE DARK RIDERS:

* This is always an interesting batch to do- I first got a rep for "statting ANYBODY" back when I first included some of these dinks in my first big set- The X-Cutioner's Song build run, way back for 2nd Edition. Then I statted them on my more popular 3e thread, turning guys like Barrage into running gags (he's got NO HANDS!). I re-posted them on my Ronin Army thread a couple years back while I was on vacation, needing some "filler". This always makes me rather wistful/nostalgic, because the stupid Dark Riders of all people seem to pop up at random moments in my thread. And now I'll always remember them, because they were stuck on my computer for like a month thanks to my recent troubles, and I had to hold them off for all this time :).

Apocalypse was meant to be X-Factor's mega-villain (after their first idea- that of using Daredevil foe THE OWL- was shot down because they wanted an original villain... and hopefully also because The Owl was terrible at the time), and they had some interesting things going on with him. He was ancient, as in thousands of years old, had an epic theory brewing, and was obsessed with being stronger and mightier than everybody else, in kind of a false-Darwinian take on all life. Of course, Darwin didn't recommend going out and KILLING THE WEAK, since, y'know, evolution was a NATURAL process, but that's why this guy was a super-villain. But really, "Survival Of The Fittest" is a REALLY cool, unique concept for a mega-villain.

It's his methods that I take issue with. Okay, so Angel kinda sucked as far as his powers went (but y'know, he has one more power than Batman ever did, so you could still have done SOMETHING with him), so boosting him to a bad-ass blue-skinned Archangel with metal slasher-wings was pretty cool (this was YEARS before such a move would be cliched and seen as a blatant Anti-Hero Upgrade). But in his grand scheme of ensuring that "Only the STRONG Survive!", he put together... THESE teams.

Yeah, he wants only the strongest beings in the universe to live on and create a super master-race, and it's Foxbat, Gauntlet, Barrage, Hard Drive, Psynapse and Tusk bringing up the ranks of his elite squadron, with War, Famine & Pestilence on the other. A bunch of guys who the Mutant Liberation Front or the Acolytes would be embarassed to see join up, and THEY are the superior beings.

The Four Horsemen were baseline X-Factor foes- a guy who could clap Explosions, a chick who made people skinny, and another who could make them sick. The latter could have been cool, and Archangel was certainly awesome, but they really came across more like some civilians recruited at random than an elite squad. Keep in mind they're contemporaries of The MARAUDERS, who REALLY show you what a squad of killers should look and act like. I personally blame X-Factor scribe Louise Simonson, who made some REALLY bad New Mutants comics in the meantime as well. The Horsemen were so bad that they only had a couple appearances before they vanished- Plague was killed by a member of POWER PACK of all teams, and War & Famine later fell into X-Limbo, that most dreaded of comic book Limbos that meant they utterly disappeared from sight. Archangel of course became a fabled good guy again (just in time to join the "Gold Strike Force" X-Men), and side Morlock character Caliban was turned into a Standard '90s Powerhouse, but the Horsemen were done for the most part.

Subsequent "Horsemen" were more often just random background X-characters formed together to make a new team- Ahab, Deathbird, Caliban & the Hulk formed one, when the latter was brainwashed. Wolverine finally got his adamantium claws back when he became another "Death". ANOTHER squad made up of Sunfire (as Famine), Polaris (as Pestilence) Gambit (as Death), someone named Gazer (as War) showed up, but similarly did little other than make classic characters a little weirder.

---

The Dark Riders came after the original Horsemen faltered, created by the main X-Men team of Chris Claremont & Jim Lee, along with Whilce Portacio, despite them still being X-Factor foes. They actually have a little-known origin, being a group of Inhumans that Apocalypse had transformed and mutated into super-warriors, and were originally called The Riders of the Storm, which was actually a little cooler as a name (but too much like a Doors song, really). They're responsible for kidnapping Nathan Summers and infecting the baby with Apocalypse's Techno-Organic Virus, which resulted in him being jettisoned to the future (where of course he got older and became Cable. And that was back when the Summers Family Tree was comparatively SIMPLE to figure out!). Pretty quickly after their creation, X-Factor joined back up with the X-Men, the Image Exodus happened, the books were shuffled around, and then Andy Kubert took over the character designs and the Dark Riders (with absolutely no hint of their Inhuman Origin whatsoever) basically became Apocalypse's silly goon squad. And none of them had any pupils, for some reason (this was a common Kubert thing).

In their next appearance, the entire team was demolished by Stryfe, who was cracking wise and not even putting an effort together- he thumped them with a single shot each, then attacked a weakened Apocalypse, beating him. This led to Stryfe leading the group (since he'd proven he was "more fit" than Apocalypse by defeating him), and they harassed an entire X-Squadron sent to Stryfe's moonbase, and didn't really do much harm. They became more notable for their "Pre-Fight Pose" than their fighting skills, showing up in an Andy Kubert-drawn set-up several different times, all with near-identical framing: Foxbat with arms crossed, Barrage with one arm-cannon pointed up, Gauntlet holding a gun, Tusk leaning forwards with Psynapse sitting on his shoulder, and three Underlings with arms crossed somewhere in-frame. Hard Drive optional. They seriously made this pose in at least three comics that I have.

Next up for the Riders, they were a group unaffiliated with any main bad guy, and tried hunting down "unfit" mutants (this consisted entirely of Mesmero and their own member Psynapse, both of whom turned up alive later anyways- these guys REALLY sucked). Then they allied with Cable's son Tyler (aka "Genesis") with some new members (Lifeforce, Hurricane, Deadbolt, Dirtnap & Spyne), and harassed a few X-Characters. Foxbat was killed by Lifeforce for sucking too hard (to be on THE DARK RIDERS), and they fought Cable in his own book.

The Riders appeared in the fabled Wolverine #100, where the then-bone-clawed Logan was kidnapped by the Riders and forcibly given adamantium from the deceased Cyber, with the intentions of making him Genesis' own personal adamantium-clawed weapon. Unfortuantely for the team, Wolverine violently rejected the adamantium, sending metal shards everywhere. Killing many in the opening salvo, the now-feral Logan (with the famous noseless visage drawn by Joe Madureira) went nuts and hunted them down one-by-one, killing a good number of the squad (the entirety of the newbies, ie. the "non-iconic" ones that people might have a hope of recognizing).

The Dark Riders' last ride (hee hee) was in the X-Man book- they were gathered together again by Stryfe (back from the dead, I guess), and they fought Nate Grey & Madelyn Pryor. Of course, screwing with either was a bad idea, and this was the event that officially killed off the entire squad (a few weren't killed on-screen, but presumed dead). No writer has ever bothered trying to bring them back since, though Gauntlet (the green dude with the gun) has appeared from time to time (even X-Men Evolution!) as a mercenary soldier-type.

So what IS this team's legacy? They pre-date a lot of the early-'90s trends of creating "Disposable Villain Teams" for the heroes to battle- a trope I think may have started in a big way with The Marauders (the '60s villain groups tended to be former villains all united- the new variety were created whole-cloth), who were actually pretty cool and devastating. Part of it is the surge of artists being the deal-makers and power-players in comic book circles- guys like Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld and Whilce Portacio were HUGE in that era, and so they had a lot more power than artists used to have. Part of this power included being able to place all your "cool" character designs into a book, and the fastest way to do this was to toss in entire seven-to-eight-man squads of super-villains all at once. The Dark Riders are contemporaries of Liefeld's Mutant Liberation Front, Jim Lee & Brandon Peterson's Acolytes, Larry Stroman's Nasty Boys, etc.

But Disposable the Dark Riders are indeed. Pretty much everyone on the team has some bare-bones concept ("red guy with spikes", "green guy with guns", "big guy who summons little guys", "guy with blasters for hands"), all are different colours (this became a popular Mutant concept at "Marvel" around this time), and none of them had a lick of personality. They were just generally evil, snarky guys. A few talked about the "Survival of the Fittest", but that was it. They pretty much just showed up, made their Group Pose, and then started fighting somewhat indiscriminately. They were so bad that by the time Wolverine fought them, they were entirely worthless, and the writers gleefully killed them off both in his comic and X-Man's.

Foxbat

That is some, uh... unfortunate placement of a phallic stabbing implement right there.

Perception 6 (+6)
Stealth 2 (+7)

Advantages:

Initiative +5

Defenses:
Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +9 (DC 19), Toughness +6, Fortitude +7, Will +3

Complications:
Motivation (Survival of the Fittest)
Prejudice (Obvious Superhuman)- Foxbat has no eyeballs and is completely red with spines and junk all over the place, and cannot pass for an ordinary human being.

Total: Abilities: 52 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 6 / Defenses: 10 (89)

-Foxbat's a classic situation for a team. One distinct pose (arms crossed to show off his spikey reverse-talons), something about being tough of survival, and then he promptly gets his ass kicked. He's kinda just some red guy. He's actually so terrible that he was called out by the Riders' last boss (Genesis) and killed because he himself was way too weak and un-worthy to be on the team. That's right- he was unworthy TO BE ON THE DARK RIDERS. And that is just SAD.

-Foxbat's a wuss. A cheap Scrapper-type build, he can't really beat ANYONE solo with any kind of consistency, but in a mass combat he's alright. He's just a simple PL 8 guy who's got pretty good physical abilities across the board- official stats say he's got "Super-Strength", but honestly, so many mutants are said to have that, yet they don't ever LIFT anything or even one-hit K.O. somebody. So you know what? Foxbat is Strengh 7 (which is actually super-strength in 3e now). That's actually REALLY high (more than most any D&D character, and certainly beyond any human being), does +8 damage when added to his Talons, and with some Super-Strength, gives him just enough to be superhuman. Being as strong as Captain America IS kind of a super-power anyways.

Barrage

He stands like this a lot.

BARRAGE
Created By:
Chris Claremont, Jim Lee & Whilce Portacio
First Appearance: X-Factor #65 (April 1991)
Role: Blaster
Group Affiliations: The Riders of the Storm, The Dark Riders
Fate: Killed by Madelyn Pryor
PL 8 (84)
STRENGTH
2 STAMINA 3 AGILITY 3
FIGHTING 3 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE 0 AWARENESS 0 PRESENCE 0

Skills:
Close Combat (Unarmed) 3 (+6)
Intimidation 5 (+5)
Perception 3 (+3)
Ranged Combat (Blasts) 1 (+7)

Advantages:
All-Out Attack, Defensive Roll, Improved Aim, Improved Critical (Blast), Precise Attack (Ranged/Cover), Ranged Attack 6

Powers:
"Inhuman Powers: Energy Cannons For Arms"
Blast 9 (Feats: Split) (Extras: Penetrating) (28) -- [31]
  • AE: Damage 8 (Extras: Area- 60ft. Cone) (16)
  • AE: Damage 8 (Extras: Area- 30ft. Line) (16)
  • AE: "Hit With Energy Arm" Strength-Damage +2 (2)
Offense:
Unarmed +6 (+2 Damage, DC 17)
Arm Cannons +7 (+9 Ranged Damage, DC 24)
Area Blasts +8 (+8 Damage, DC 23)
Initiative +3

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +3 (+4 D.Roll), Fortitude +5, Will +3

Complications:
Motivation (Survival of the Fittest)
Disabled (No Hands)- Yes, this "Fit" survivor has NO HANDS. OK, so ComicVine says he can turn his hands INTO the Blasters, so theoretically he can switch.
Prejudice (Obvious Superhuman)- Barrage has sickly yellow skin, no eyeballs (that might just be Andy Kubert's '90s style, though), NO HANDS, and cannot pass for an ordinary human being.

Total: Abilities: 22 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 11 / Powers: 31 / Defenses: 15 (84)

-Barrage was always the defining character of this team, to me. While the rest of the group was pathetically one-note and full of boring character designs, here was this yellow guy with flowing hair AND NO HANDS. He just had these giant battle-cannon thingies where his hands should be. Yes fans, this means that Apocalypse, a guy who's entire credo is "Only the strong must survive" literally thinks that the future evolution of our species will be advanced by a guy who can't wipe his own butt without assistance. Seriously, a no-handed super-character... I'm all for equal opportunity, but this guy just flat-out sucks.

-Barrage is a PL 8 Blaster with some versatility to them in terms of Area Damage and a standard Blast. They're actually decently powerful (Wolverine announced that his ribcage was "shattered" after being hit by one... how this would happen to a guy with UNBREAKABLE BONES I will leave up to Fabian Nicieza to explain), and can fit anyone in his targetted range into their path, so he's one of the best long-range fighters on his squad.

Complications:
Motivation (Survival of the Fittest)
Prejudice (Obvious Superhuman)- Spyne is deep red and covered with sharp spines, in addition to having a huge tail. He cannot pass for an ordinary human being.

Total: Abilities: 46 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 14 / Defenses: 11 (94)

-Spyne was added onto the team at a later date, but only lived through two adventures: once against Cable & Domino, and the next against Wolverine & Cannonball. A crazed Wolverine killed this reptilian guy, then used his severed tail to kill Deadbolt. Not much of a run for him, huh?

-Spyne is ridiculously similar to Foxbat in many ways (makes you wonder why they bothered). He's another semi-super-strong Claw Guy, but he has a unique aspect with his tail. He doesn't come across as particularly tough, especially since Wolvie killed him as part of a GROUP of other guys, so he's still only PL 8. He's a little bit of fun to build thanks to all his little animal-styled tricks, but unfortunately he's still a crappy jobber.

-Hurricane is easily the worst-off of his team- unoriginal dime-a-dozen elemental powers, a nothing visual appearance (a ripped guy who looks like a failed Mad Max villain design), and a death very soon after his debut, which mostly consisted of him losing to other characters anyways. He was so bad he was chosen to be knocked off when Wolverine rejected his adamantium skeleton (which led to his brief "No-Nose Wolvie" form), sending multiple shards of the metal flying everywhere, pincushioning this loser bastard in a single panel. Nothing really new here except for his "Disorienting" Burst, kinda like a Ranged Stun, which isn't actually that bad. He's PL 8 except for the Air Control power, which brushes people off at +9 intensity.

Honestly, much as I love Apocalypse as a villain, he would have been largely forgotten if he wasn't used to such great effect in the 90s X-Men show and X-Men Evolution. Those shows made him a mega threat, really capturing his grandiose menace and power, making you wonder why he didn't wind up fighting Thor or the Avengers.

The comics, well, he kind of sucks. And most of his servants suck. Props to Evolution for not even bothering with the death/war/pestilence/famine structure and just made Prof. X, Magneto, Storm and Mystique his Horsemen.

I mean, they had someone named "war" and his deal is he claps his hands to make things explode. Such a waste of a name.

-Lifeforce is another mini add-on to the team, a mutant who can drain life energy from people for two purposes. She was the one who mostly killed Foxbat when he was judged as "weak", but she herself was such a loser that Wolverine was able to kill her just by rejecting his adamantium implantation process. Filled with shrapnel, down she went. And wow- this chick is bought on the CHEAP. She can Weaken Stamina quite well, but lacks nasty attributes like Poison or Disease on it. But once she DOES hit with it, she can whip out a PL 8 Blast, or Regenerate damage she's taken. So if she got amped up to a full PL 10 (150) status, she might actually be dangerous, with various types of uses in battle. But as it stands, she still sucks- she's the cheapest Dark Rider so far (79 points!), despite the fact that she's PL 9.

-They had to be nuts when creating this guy. A walking, talking SKELETON that throws his own bones at you as an attack? Just crazy. Perfect for this team, too. Another nobody beyond his appearance and powers, Deadbolt was decapitated by a gone-feral Wolverine, who used his head to lure Barrage to his death. And yeah, Image's lawyers must've been licking their chops at THIS dude- he's just a rip-off of Helspont! At least he doesn't copy the Wild C.A.T.s villain's powers.

-Deadbolt is pretty much a combination of the Skeleton's powers in standard M&M rules, along with an actual CON score and the "Throwing Bones" power (every time I type that, I picture Jeff Smith's Bone). He's only PL 7.5 as he's kind of a useless git in combat and got killed super-easy, but he's freaky to look at, and reasonably accurate for a scrub with his one attack.

Complications:

Prejudice (Obvious Superhuman)- Gauntlet is big, green, and looks like an Orc, and cannot pass for an ordinary human being.

Total: Abilities: 56 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 19 / Powers: 5 / Defenses: 8 (107)

-Gauntlet's an odd one because he actually survived this team of losers. He was basically a green-skinned hooded guy who stood menacingly alongside the group, and tended to be their field leader. He wasn't even a mutant or a guy with standard Inhuman powers... he just has that classic "He's strong according to bios, but doesn't really do any super-strong STUFF" thing about him, as he's more like your average 1990s-era gunslinger/military dude archetype, shooting guys (like his teammate Psynapse and '60s character Mesmero... though these were both illusions). Thought dead when Wolverine went feral, he turned up alive in later stories, and even survived the X-Man/Madelyne Pryor-based massacre of the team, showing up one more time as a mercenary. No idea why- he certainly isn't that cool-looking, and they obviously had no plans for the guy. I guess they just felt that we needed a Jobber Mercenary out there for X-people to beat up.

-Despite that, he actually showed up in X-Men Evolution of all things, as a merc hunting Wolverine! I mean, who did THIS guy have for an agent?! The rest of his team is an embarassing joke, and he gets further play?

-Another PL 8 Dark Rider despite his "Field Leader" status, and the fact that he tended to do better in fights than his buddies. He's WAY under-pointed, but a rather skilled guy with some good equipment on him- he's just not specialized enough- he's only PL 8 overall, being KINDA strong and accurate, but not enough to make up for the weakness of his weapons (compared to most comic characters Blasts, obviously- they're more advanced that normal Mook weaponry), or his lack of focus in melee combat (where his strongest Knife-based attack is). His Mind Shield comes from the issue where Psynapse was turned on them by Mesmero- Gauntlet wasn't remotely affected by the Psi-Flash, and casually shot Mesmero (who was fooling them into thinking he was dead anyways). So he's immune to a Flash, but not Mesmero's control... well, let's just say he made one Will Save, and failed the other, shall we?

Re: Jab's Builds! (Capt. ****! G-Force! The Braddock Academy!)

Jabroniville wrote: Sun Apr 09, 2017 6:29 am Okay, that's FINALLY it for the Marvel UK characters :). This one took a lot longer than anticipated- not only was I doing them on my cellphone at one point, but the numbers kept getting added to over time- first I discovered my "Excalibur" file had the five Braddock Academy brats on it, then I added the four names that were mentioned (Immortalis, G-Force, etc.). Then Koroko mentioned Tektos, and then MC48 mentioned the Q7 Strike Force! Ordinarily, I'd have "spread" those guys out a bit more, as most of them were insanely minor (as opposed to, you know, big names like Death Metal & Black Baron), but it was already too late once I'd started posting the dudes.

So here's a bit of a State Of Jab's Builds for the next year or so:
(* Note: I tend to find random things to post on a constant basis, so my "Planned Order" of builds is constantly changing. It's part of why I almost never do requests, and why I always have the "Posting Order" laid out well in advance- to prevent bouts of ADD from striking and sending me all over the place with random things. Just think of how long the poor Hulk Builds took to finally happen- I announced that I was planning them out in *2014*, and only got around to them earlier this year!)
  • Marvel- The Letter "B": 15 day's worth!
  • Marvel- The Letter "C": 14 days' worth.
  • Marvel- The Letter "D": 12 days' worth.
  • Marvel- The Letter "F": 8 days' worth.
  • Marvel- The Letter "G": 9 days' worth.
  • Marvel- The Letter "H": 9 days' worth.
  • Marvel- The Letter "L": 8 days' worth.
  • Marvel- The Letter "M": 19 days' worth (the biggest letter left by far, now that "S" is finally done).
  • Marvel- The Letter "N": 6 days' worth.
  • Marvel- The Letter "P": 7 days' worth.
  • Marvel- The Letter "R": 9 days' worth.
  • Marvel- The Letter "T": 12 days' worth.
  • Marvel- The Letter "W": 6 days' worth (mostly a lotta "Wraiths" and "White Tigers").
(all the letters are, naturally, thrown out randomly between "other" sets. I'm a completist, but few of these are just CRYING out for builds or re-posts)
  • Marvel 2099: An odd amount of interest for this. It's pretty easy to research, as the characters don't appear to be very deep.
  • Sailor Moon: F*ck you if you don't like it :p. I might wait until we see BatgirlIII posting on here again- she's been off for a bit.
  • Spider-Man: A semi-recent set (it was Ronin Army-era), but since I'm away for a couple of weeks in May, and Ares has PROMISED he'll be around to comment on it, I can re-post them then. It'll be like I haven't left, but instead just got lazy!
  • The Squadron Supreme: It's been a LONG-ass time.
  • Samurai Shodown: One of the more interesting sets of fighting game characters, but the character list is MUCH larger than you'd think.
  • Godzilla: eh, maybe. Nothing really new to add, though.
  • Wicked: Pretty simple re-posts, really. Though I probably don't have to explain as hard who Idina Menzel is anymore :).
  • Gargoyles: Not since ATT have I posted these. Though there's really not a lot of new information out there.
  • Shining Force: One of my favorite games ever. I just have to be in the right "mood" to want to do these.
  • Fire Emblem (GBA's first one): See above. Also, "guy with sword" is your typical build, so it's not like it's super-deep.
  • Mega Man: Jesus, it's actually been since *2nd Edition* since I posted these guys! I mentioned possibly doing them "soon-ish" when I did the Video Game builds, but at that point, I was kinda burned out on non-comics builds, and didn't really want to just slog through updating the builds to the newer edition. But I could manage it now. Mega Man X might be further away on the horizon, despite some far superior boss designs.
  • Invincible: It's been a HELL of a long time- again, these were 2nd Edition builds! But with the series ending within the next year-ish (stupid delayed issues), I figure I should help cap it off with a more-complete run (my builds pre-date the arrivals of Conquest or Evil Freddie Mercury). Expect a lot of "holy shit, I forgot about that guy" with all of Mark's terrestrial menaces like Tether Tyrant and Magmaniac.
  • Marvel Organizations: Just some re-posts, as these were tolerable "filler". Won't take more than a day.
  • Marvel's Monsters: Already mostly-built, but I can put them all down at once, and add new stuff for Blade and his crew.
  • Ghost Rider: The '70s stuff, the '90s phenomenon, and the repeated failed attempts at making him a thing today.
  • The Legion of Super-Heroes: Mostly re-posts from the ATT.
  • Dinosaurs: Again, these were ATT-era, though will be mostly unchanged.
  • Suicide Squad/Secret Six: Kinda had an idea for these guys after reading a few trades of Ostrander's book, plus people seemed into it enough to tie it with Marvle 2099 in terms of interest. And Secret Six was Gail Simone's best work ever. Naturally, DC threw it away.
  • Power Pack: Just to get it out of the way :). Fun Fact: My eternal hatred of requests and people interjecting with stuff they wanted to see stems almost entirely from me being forced to stat these f*cks up due to sudden interest when my "Ronin Army" thread started up. This book can suck my vinegary BALLS.
  • Killer Instinct: Re-posts, plus I hear they added some guys. I'd have to work my interest up, as I don't care about the series.
  • WeaponLord: A pretty quick set (it's like, what- seven guys?). But two are muscular ladies.
  • Thundercats: I dunno, maybe. The show is a REAL piece of shit if you watch it today. Good for snark, though.
  • The Force of July: Pretty fun jobbers.
  • South Park: I actually had this planned out 2-3 years ago, but never got around to it (TV builds are more fun conceptually than they are in practice)- the list is just too enormous to do "properly" without a lot of time.
* this is naturally pretty heavy towards Marvel, as usual. It's just easier to research, easier to place guys PL-wise, more consistent with characterization and continuity, and just plain more FUN.
I?
.....I'mma have to pay you millions of dollars delivered by FBB dominatrixes to get you to do Terrodrome aren't I? lol

-HardDrive (once called "Mainframe") is the leader of the Dark Riders whenever they're between actual GOOD characters to lead the entire team. He's a pretty boring machine-controlling computer/man hybrid that tells the boys what to do and generally doesn't fight on his own. His powers are mostly things I've read in summations and online bio-sites: the guy fights so rarely I've pretty much never seen him hit someone. He's a PL 8 (129) guy who's got more Skills & Powers than a normal Dark Rider, but still is kind of a pushover, especially defensively. He was offed by Madelyn Pryor

Dirtnap

Reduced Stamina 3 [-6]

Offense:
Unarmed +9 (-5 Damage, DC 10)
Absorb Life Forms +9 (+11 Damage & Weaken, DC 26 & 21)
Initiative +4

Defenses:
"Rat Form" Dodge +14 (DC 24), Parry +12 (DC 22), Toughness -3, Fortitude +2, Will +4
"Human Forms" Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +xx (Variable), Fortitude +xx (Variable +5), Will +4

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- In his base form, Dirtnap cannot use his paws to easily manipulate objects.
Reputation (Pest)- Rats are notoriously prone to disease, and are exterminated wherever they are seen in the civilized world. Many people are naturally frightened of them just by their appearance- they don't even have to do anything.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, Rats are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on Dirtnap effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.
Responsibility (No Longer Has a Real Body)- Dirtnap is now stuck in Rat form as his baseline- he no longer possesses his original body.

Total: Abilities: 10 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 110 / Defenses: 14 (157)

-Dirtnap's actually a rather interesting little villain, but he didn't get too long a run. I recall flipping through a bunch of books featuring him, notably Generation-X & Wolverine. He was a mutant who could absorb and copy the life-forms of others, and used this to murder a bunch of people. His link to the Dark Riders is minimal at-best, as he was there for a single issue, and actually survived the massacre at the hands of Feral Wolverine. He got stuck permanently with the form of a rat he absorbed as his baseline form, and hung around a few books that way, until he finally got the classic "heroic sacrifice" death, rescuing Generation-X (who were kind to him, something he'd never felt before) from M-Plate, and getting killed in the process. *sniff*... almost makes you forgive his history of child-murder and EATING PEOPLE'S BODIES.

-Hey, a PL 10 Dark Rider! And he's OVER-COST for his Power Level! I KNEW it could be done! He's actually rather interesting, packing a Rat's baseline form onto a sneaky villain who both has a MASSIVE Corrosion power (doesn't need Affects Objects because... it doesn't Affect Objects. Duh.) and a heavy-duty Shapeshift that allows him to copy up to 45 pp from someone he's killed and taken over. It has a Limit because of that, and Noticeable for his 'icon' of a Smiley-Face that shows up on all the bodies he inhabits, but is otherwise very dangerous. He also gains a boost to his Defenses while Shapeshifting, because otherwise his Rat-like form (and it's boosts) would make him nigh-impossible to hit- not that +14 to Dodge is easy to deal with.

Tusk

Post by Jabroniville »

I love that Jim Lee loved this character design concept of his SO MUCH that he had to re-use it for Maul from Wild C.A.T.s.

TUSK
Created By:
Chris Claremont, Jim Lee & Whilce Portacio
First Appearance: X-Factor #65 (April 1991)
Role: Summoner, Big Guy
Group Affiliations: The Riders of the Storm, The Dark Riders
Fate: Unknown (possibly killed by X-Man)

Skills:

Advantages:
Close Attack, Fast Grab, Improved Hold, Ranged Attack 4, Set-Up, Teamwork

Powers:
"Inhuman Powers: Super-Strength & Underling Creation"
"Long Reach" Strength-Damage +0 (Feats: Reach) [1]
"Armoured Hide" Protection 3 [3]

Summon Underlings 3 (Feats: Mental Link) (Extras: Active, 8 Underlings- Multiple Minions +6) [28]

Offense:
Unarmed +7 (+9 Damage, DC 24)
Initiative +0

Defenses:
Dodge +6 (DC 16), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +10, Fortitude +8, Will +3

Complications:
Motivation (Survival of the Fittest)
Involuntary Transformation (Worm)- Tusk is actually a miniature Worm-like creature, and the "Tusk" most people recognize is actually a simacrulum that just acts like a living being. Strong enough Damage effects can possibly shatter this outer form, revealing a powerless, limbless slug.

Total: Abilities: 44 / Skills: 8--4 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 32 / Defenses: 10 (99)

-Tusk is the resident "Big Guy" of the Dark Riders, but never really seemed that strong. He was just this pretty big, lumbering dude with big rocky shoulders who had three Underlings always following him around (no X-books I read featured him spawning them, but apparently that was his power). He kicked around for a while, but actually vanished from the team during it's fights with Cable & Wolverine, only reappearing in a battle against Nate Grey, who wiped out his body, revealing a wormlike creature at the heart of the "Tusk" being. He hasn't shown up in years, but since he's an Inhuman and not a mutant, he possibly still has his powers. Not that anybody's likely to use him.

-Tusk has an interesting power-set, being a mini-Brick at PL 8, but also having a weak Summon Minion power, creating PL 5 Underlings who are semi-strong and semi-tough (but easy enough for heroes to mow through). The fact that he's actually a worm thing deep-down is an Involuntary Transformation rather than anything annoyingly complex like an Innate Shrinking with a "Tusk as Device" power- presumably he can actually GROW the Tusk being around himself.

-Psynapse usually showed up seated on Tusk's shoulder in group poses. His whole schtick was actually more interesting than he ended up being later; a relative of Medusa & Crystal of the Inhuman Royal Family, he was a bored noble who shacked up with Apocalypse's gang, using his mental powers to attack X-Factor and the later X-teams. A classic case of guys being depowered over time, the once-powerful psionic who could drag people into the Astral Plane, summon minions made of energy, and transform personalities was now just a Psi-Flashing mini-person by the time he started showing up in the major X-books. He was so minor that he contracted the Legacy Virus (it was inferred) and was shot by his teammates for being weak. He showed up with absolutely no explanation in a later "X-Man" comic (apparently he faked his death and rejoined the team?), sans coughing/Virus-y stuff, but was killed there anyways, accidentally reactivating Nate Grey's mental powers with his Flare.

-Psynapse is a little tough to figure out. Oddly, most bio-sites leave out the fact that he's constantly ONE FOOT TALL, which leaves him a physical weakling/Glass Cannon. His key power is a high-powered Mental Blast (either a standard one or a Burst Area one that affects entire groups) that makes him a full-on PL 10, with some Alt-Effects for the bizarre side-powers he showed in his initial X-Factor appearances. This makes him an effective team player, as he sucks on his own. He's got a powerful ability, but the slightest breeze will K.O. him in a hurry.
