Secret (Responsible for his Predecessor's Death)- The prior Fiery Mask had to give the powers to another person before he died. Jack selfishly chose to allow the man to die before reaching hospital, "just in case" he couldn't find anyone else to give the powers, since Jack "knew" he could use the powers properly. The guilt over this has driven him to distraction for years.

Total: Abilities: 92 / Skills: 14--7 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 14 / Defenses: 9 (126)

-Hey- a guy I actually remember existing! I only know this guy from my Marvel: Five Fabulous Decades of the World's Greatest Comics book, where he is shown as part of a montage that states "It seemed like the same hero was appearing every month, changing his name and dyeing his costume"- a self-effacing look at how Timely Comics was just kind of copying trends over and over again, and had multiple failed heroes to show for it. Captain Wonder, The Black Marvel and Captain Terror were all shown as examples of this kind of generic, mindless super-hero character.

-Captain Wonder was super-strong and could fly, but only lasted two appearances before the Young Allies feature in Kid Comics completely overwhelmed him, and he vanished until 2008. He is said to have invented a "miracle drug" giving him the strength of twelve men, along with his sidekick Tim. When he awakens in modern times, he discovers that his wife has been dead for twenty years, and that his two sons died in "some place he'd never even heard of" (Vietnam)- his sidekick commits suicide rather than face dying from cancer, too. All of this stuff piling onto him makes his continued heroics a bit more pronounced (though he appears to be doing them almost as a way of avoiding his sorrow, rather than facing it), and he is badly injured while fighting Dynamic Man, receiving major burns. His grief still cripples him once he's left to himself.

-He's drawn with a weird head in The Twelve, sporting a relatively pronounced chin and forehead, making his face look super-tiny. His bare, hairy legs stick out like a sore thumb when he's in uniform, too. Also, his "half-mask" looks creepy, as it's entirely gold and featureless, covering one half of his burned face.

-In the Golden Age, Captain Wonder is about PL 8 and has ST & STA 6- in The Twelve, he's seen doing Superman-style stuff, albeit at a lower level (carrying around the hundred-plus ton Space Shuttle, and standing there while bullets bounce harmlessly off of him). He's easily as capable in a fight as Dynamic Man.

-Tim was Captain Wonder's Kid Sidekick ("It was Tim. Captain Wonder and Tim" he relates humorously to the Phantom Reporter- acknowledging that he couldn't think of anything else at the time)- also present when his chemical concoction went up. His powers were lesser, and he is shown later as a frail old man, dying in The Twelve. He'd both loved and missed the power of superheroics (he was more vulnerable to bullets as time went on, and even started aging normally), and had a cancer that wouldn't go away. When Captain Wonder revealed that he still didn't know the chemical solution that gave them both powers, Tim screamed "go to hell!" and committed suicide, jumping off a building while wearing a cape.

-The Blue Blade is a one-off goofy character from the Golden Age, and his goofiness was played up in The Twelve, where he was hopelessly outdated and assumed he was going to get a "radio show" out of the group's newfound fame. His attempt at a variety show was a huge bomb (some TV exec are shown aghast at him telling WIFE JOKES, complete with snare-drum effect), and he controls the robot Electro to improve the program- this backfires when the robot, under the command of Dynamic Man, murders him in order to cover up Dynamic Man's acts.

Hum..It's a +2 rapier, but it says his unarmed is +3 while his rapier is +4. Is he meant to have 2 strength? +5 damage at +10 accuracy would make him like, PL 7.5 or something. Still, he looks like an amusing goof. Might be fun to pull out in a game as a washed-up, outdated hero who is probably more of a nuisance to the party than a help. Still, he might be able to earn some modicum of respect through some HP-worthy feat.

Electro (Kill-O-Bot)

ELECTRO I
Created By:
Otto Binder & Frank Giacoia
First Appearance: Marvel Mystery Comics #4 (Feb. 1940)
Role: Golden Age Hero
Group Affiliations: The Twelve
PL 9 (61)
STRENGTH
8 STAMINA -- AGILITY 1
FIGHTING 8 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE 0 AWARENESS -- PRESENCE --

Skills:
None

Advantages:
Fast Grab, Improved Critical (Unarmed), Ranged Attack 2

Powers:
Speed 6 (120 mph) [6]
Immunity 30 (Fortitude Effects) [30]
Protection 10 [10]

Offense:
Unarmed +8 (+8 Damage, DC 23)
Initiative +4

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +10, Fortitude --, Will --

Complications:
Enemy (Nazi Germany)
Responsibility (Lonely)- The robot doesn't have much of a mind, but still carries some of his creator's brainwaves within him- during the long suspended animation of the Twelve, he called out for companionship, finding it only in Dynamic Man, whose control was still evident much later. Electro finds himself compelled to carry out Dynamic Man's wishes.

Total: Abilities: 4 / Skills: 00--0 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 46 / Defenses: 7 (61)

-Electro is a robotic creation that uses the telepathic brainwaves of his creator, Philo Zog, to function. He is briefly used by The Blue Blade for a variety show, but soon kills the hero, under the direction of Dynamic Man. He's as generic as a Kill-O-Bot gets, justified by his ancient origins- despite that, in the relatively "low-powered" world of The Twelve, it's shown being rather horrifying in its effectiveness. Under DM's direction, he invades a gay club, "tearing them apart like they were dolls", and a shot in World War II showed the thing picking up a Nazi soldier and literally pulling him in half. By the end of the series, the robot is being used as a weapon of war by the military, with The Laughing Mask controlled a masked Electro against Iranian soldiers, sporting a "Tehran or Bust!" paintjob instead of the old "Berlin or Bust!" one.

-Electro is PL 8 on offense (much more than Blue Blade or any of the other human-level guys), PL 9 on defense- he's powerful, and stands out even moreso because he's on a team with mostly regular guys, but got whupped pretty good by Captain Wonder. It's more demonstrative of how terrifying even a PL 8 threat would be in real life- a bulletproof robot that can literally rend people to pieces.

Total: Abilities: 80 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 52 / Defenses: 7 (153)

-The Golden Age Black Widow (unrelated to Natasha Romanov) only made five appearances, and wasn't your typical super-heroine- she fit more into the "Horror" genre, a Pulp-ish character who murdered her victims. She was a spirit medium who communicated with the dead, and was possessed by Satan (!!) to put a curse on a family- she is gunned down by the only survivor and ends up in Hell, where Satan gives her evil super-powers and sends her against sinners, to kill them faster and bring them to their new master. She kills her murderer, then others- as her victims are generally evil, she is thus doing "good". She also stands as the very first super-powered, costumed female character- other females that predate her miss one or the other.

-The Twelve retcons her as gaining powers from Satan after swearing vengeance on her sister's grave- he grants her wish to kill her sister's killer, then goes on to fight Nazi Germany, surely helping her boss gain more souls all the while. She is now shown mourning the deaths she's causing, and is openly bisexual at this point (pretentiously, Straczynski has one woman say "I feel like she was around before there EVER WAS an "us"- referring to goth culture).

-The Black Widow is the most powerful of The Twelve next to Dynamic Man, being able to kill with a touch (victims burst into flame and their souls are cast to Hell, leaving a spider-shaped mark on the ground), and can tear apart human beings with her bare hands.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 11 (91)

-The Laughing Mask showed up in only one story before becoming The Purple Mask for the next two, then The Falcon in the next. He was a Deputy District Attorney who became frustrated with the progress of justice, and thus became a gun-toting vigilante, wearing a phosphorescent glowing mask to strike fear into the hearts of criminals. Brought out of suspended animation in modern times, his firearms are taken by the police as evidence, and they are discovered to be responsible for the execution of a mob boss in the '40s, and he's arrested for the crime. Linked up with the robotic Electro, he gains clemency by operating it remotely, in combat against terrorists.

-The Laughing Mask just appears to be a generic gun-toter, dismissively called a "tourist" by the Phantom Reporter's narration for his lack of powers & capabilities. His mask just looks to be generic gold rather than anything glowing, and all he's seen doing is shooting some random goons. He's plainly a bit crackers, enjoying himself while he mows baddies down with his .45s, and keeps up the act when he controls the Electro robot, laughing as his tears into armed militants with "Tehran or Bust!" written on the golden mask-wearing robot's chest.

Weakness (Radioactive Bullet in the Brain)- Master Mind Excello's powers come from a radioactive bullet that's lodged in his brain. However, every time he uses said powers, the bullet moves closer to killing him- he must thus be mindful.

Total: Abilities: 76 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 43 / Defenses: 11 (150)

-Master Mind Excello is a random, hilariously-named Golden Age hero who only made a couple of appearances in Mystic Comics before disappearing. He was used in modern times twice- once, as an inspiration for Amadeus Cho (his name was given to a soap company that sponsored Cho's early endeavors), and then in The Twelve. Here, his super-senses overwhelm him thanks to modern-day times being so much noisier, and becomes a recluse. There are some hints that he would be the story's antagonist, but they were Red Herrings- he engaged in the final battle against Dynamic Man, but was undone when he got distracted (his Mental Stun wore off and Dynamic Man just decked him). Excello later uses his personal wealth (accumulated with interest since he was gone for so long) to fund an investigative firm as the series ends, using The Phantom Reporter & Golden Age Black Widow as agents.

-He reveals his full origin in The Twelve- he was a vice-ridden gambling addict who'd rejected scientific advancement for this petty lifestyle- he soon realized that he had low-level Mental Powers that allowed him to "guess" the future, explaining his skills at gambling. Later, exposure to a radioactive bullet his father had invented gave him further powers. There's a nice bit where he willingly gives his life in favor of saving his father from a Nazi saboteur (who used the aforementioned bullet to try it)- "I realized that despite all of our arguments, I loved my father. And with that knowledge, I gave my life freely"). But yeah, he looks REALLY goofy in the series, with highly-arched eyebrows, a widow's peak haircut, and his face scrunched almost unimaginably into this caricature.

-Master Mind Excello has some pretty vague extrasensory powers, in addition to some high strength.
