Re: Jab's Builds! (Marvel 2099- Spider-Man! Tyler Stone! Ravage!)

Post by greycrusader »

The original Ghost Rider series tapped into more than one fad-both the interest in outlaw motorcycle subculture AND the horror comics mini-boom following Marvel's breaking the comics code in the late 1960s/early 70s; sales were decent enough for an 11 year run (damn good for the era, actually). Then in the Iron Age, we got the more "extreme" Danny Ketch version with the chains and spiked leathers, which ran out of steam before the turn of the century (but still an eight year stretch-way better than most artifacts of that decade). But in the last twenty years, Ghost Rider has become one of those "name" characters who cannot sustain a series, just like Dr. Strange, Namor, and Black Panther.

Wow, eleven years? I had no idea the early "Blaze" run was that long! I kept hesitating to do work on the various GRs, because they tend to be pains to stat, but I was finally into the idea enough (largely because I wanted to stat out all of the Lilin) to include it in the "Upcoming Builds" I wanted to see people's interest in. But then of course 2099 & Suicide Squad got more attention, so they got moved ahead :).

Thor 2099

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THOR 2099 (Cecil McAdam):
-Cecil McAdam joined Avatarr's mission to recreate Norse Gods (McAdam was already a Thorite religious official)- Avatarr simply wanted to prevent the new generation of super-heroes from interfering with his plans, but Cecil truly wanted to recreate the Age Of Heroes. He ended up dying by the story's end, trying to grab his False Mjolnir after Jake "Punisher 2099" Gallows had tossed it into a maelstrom of energy. Totally not statting a guy who "might be kinda like Thor".

-So of course one of the launch titles of the 2099 line would be one starring a new Punisher- Frank Castle was one of Marvel's top sellers at the time, having a shocking THREE titles running simultaneously! Jake Gallows is a cop whose family is slaughtered by the serial killer Kron Stone- as Stone is wealthy, he's easily able to pay the fines that make up the punishments for murder in this future society. Gallows discovers the War Journal of the original Punisher, takes up the name, and murders Stone (who later reappears as Venom 2099 in the Spider-Man 2099 book). He even gains a Microchip-like technically-gifted pal.

-Jake engages in various antics, stopping the futuristic crimes of his world, and even built a prison beneath his house! However, as time goes on, he is corrupted while serving under the Doom Administration, spying on people and killing mostly-innocent people. He is ultimately killed by some anti-Doom agents. Another version popped up in the Spider-Verse stuff sent in the "2099" world, but he got up to very little.

-Punisher 2099 is just Punisher-Lite, with little extra stuff on him.

-2099's Fearmaster was a "Cyber-Nostra" crimeboss who could transform people with a touch. He's apparently a bit nuts (he's a serial-killer who freezes women into statues, so that they remain beautiful forever), and opposed Punisher 2099 a lot.

-Kron Stone is the son of Tyler Stone (making him the half-brother of Spider-Man 2099), and a violent serial killer- his M.O. is to murder entire families, leaving only one person alive to suffer with the tragedy. The weird laws of the future (which allow people to "buy off" their crimes with fines instead of jail time, or get away with it if victims didn't pay money directly to the police) mean that the wealthy Stone need not ever face true punishment for his crimes. It just so happens, however, that one of his victims was Jake Gallows, who becomes the futuristic Punisher. Stone wore a special vest that protected against anything that moved quickly (such as most weapons), so the new Punisher managed to slowly stab him to death.

-However, Stone ended up in the sewers, where he encountered the old Venom Symbiote. Touching it, the Symbiote transforms him into the new Venom. Here, he instead goes after his half-brother, killing Spidey 2099's girlfriend before the guy manages to use the sonic weakness against Venom. The Symbiote was last seen heading into the ocean, where it infected Roman the Sub-Mariner.

-Venom 2099 is very pricey, as all Symbiote-based characters tend to be, merging a serial killer's statline with that of Venom himself. so, uh, Carnage.

Should have lured him into the desert where his vest would have attracted a sandworm.

-What seems to be the most well-thought-of 2099 title was in fact Doom 2099, then one of the few comics to star a VILLAIN as the main character. He's actually the original Doctor Doom, having skipped out on things decades earlier and only now returns to Earth, where he is badly beaten by Latveria's new monarch, Tyger Wylde, owing to his "outdated" armor. Using 2099's technology and the assistance of others, Doom fashions a new, MORE elite suit of armor, and becomes a freedom fighter of sorts. He eventually unseats Wylde and becomes dictator once more, using a merry band of "Gypsies" (Roma of the Zefiro tribe) as his assistants.

-Despite some hints that he was not, in fact, the original Von Doom, it was revealed that his more youthful appearance and un-scarred face were the result of a regenerative "bath" after his physical body was badly damaged. With his mind restored after some shenanigans with a rival, he ends up conquering the entire United States, altering the 2099 big-time by unseating the ruling corporations. This was during a young Warren Ellis's run on the book, taking over for John Francis Moore. Doom is himself deposed by the corporate heads he'd made enemies of, and they replaced him with a cloned Captain America who was loyal to them. Cruelly, they even wipe out the entire nation of Latveria in a genocidal act of revenge- Doom's revenge is swift, and he leaves the ringleader alive, but crippled and in constant pain, as a lesson in vengeance.

-As Doom 2099 ends and World of Tomorrow becomes the only book in the former line, Doom goes back in time to ensure the survival of at least 50% of the Latverian population (by making them immune to the venom that killed them in 2099), but dies saving the world from the Phalanx.

-Doom 2099 was functionally similar to his standard version, but initially had no use of his mystical abilities, as he'd lost much of his memory. Eventually this returned when he regained his true self. His armor is supposedly HUGELY upgraded, except he fits the same role in his own universe and appears no different from his normal version (which is easily able to handle Kang, who is from MUCH further in the future than 2099).

One of my dream writing gigs would be to do a "Doctor Doom" series. I remember the "Supervillain Teamup" book with him and Namor was a lot of fun, and if it wasn't for "Secret Wars" and "Infamous Iron Man" I'd say it's past due for Doom to have his own little book. Would be a lot of fun in my eyes to do a story about the inner workings of Latveria and how it functions as a nation, and Doom dealing with matters both domestic and foreign, building on a lot of established stuff I've seen over the years (like the stuff Mark Waid highlighted during the Latveria arc of his Daredevil run).

Yeah, it is kind of curious. Usually when we see it, it's a picturesque, old-looking town-sized structure of postcard-photographs. The people look just as old-timey. But they mention the wealth, prosperity and security of the nation... so long as the public accepts that they have no personal freedoms. Usually, their monarch is looked at with a mixture of awe and fear, and every time he's deposed, things quickly go to hell.

-Junkpile was a villain in the X-Men 2099 book- he was a former criminal cohort of the X-Men's leader, and killed Serpentina while trying to get at Xi'an. Killed in battle, he was resurrected by Doom to go against the X-Men one more time, but teamed up with Skullfire in order to defeat Brimstone Love's Theatre of Pain.

X-Men 2099

Post by Jabroniville »

X-MEN 2099:
-Naturally, as the X-Men were the biggest cash-cow in the comic book industry around the early '90s, it was inevitable that the second big surge of 2099 books would include a variant of them. Unfortunately, this one kind of shit the bed immediately, sticking a boring and ineffectual team out there instead of anything similar to what the books were producing at that time. Many of them come off either half-formed (Meanstreak, who never gets any development; Cerebra the generic Psychic), or so '90s it hurts (Skullfire, who appears to be what someone would create if they'd simply heard about what '90s kids liked instead of actually witnessed it for themselves). They were written by John Francis Moore (no idea who that is), and mostly drawn by Ron Lim, who was just then a big name for his Silver Surfer run... but would rapidly fall apart as an artist around this time, producing some of the laziest visual designs in comic book history.

-The team is formed when Xi'an Chi Xan gathers together a new generation of X-Men. The team just kinda... farts around, not doing anything interesting, and then Xi'an turns on them for some reason. The books seemed to coast on the X-Men name, doing well enough to earn a spin-off (X-Nation 2099), but absolutely none of it ever mattered, and the characters have never reappeared in any kind of important context- it's as if the book had never existed.

-Xi'an was a very boring-looking character in his debut, and I think I was biased against him immediately because Serpentina says of Metalhead "If you think he's something, wait until you meet XI'AN!", and since Xi'an wasn't a big, strong, metallic guy, I was like "no way, Serpentina's dumb- Metalhead is way more awesome". As the "Desert Ghost", Xi'an was on the run from an early age (after his wealthy parents dumped him in a lab to protect their reputations from their matter-dissolving Mutant son). Becoming a criminal, he reforms in time to recreate the X-Men. However, fairly quickly into the series, it's revealed that Xi'an's criminal nature was actually an alternate personality of sorts, and events bring it to the fore.

-Xi'an becomes the new leader of Brimstone Love's Theatre of Pain, taking the name "Controller X" for a time. He is finally restored by La Lunatica, and both of his halves come together- he travels with the X-Men in an attempt to reform and come to terms with himself- he ultimately quits and opens a clinic to heal people using his powers. Eventually, he becomes a leader in the Savage Land colony, as humanity recovers from the polar ice caps melting.

-Xi'an has a good Healing power, and a really, REALLY dangerous PL 10 Disintegration power. Kind of a Glass Cannon, but watch out for his left hand.
