Dodge +9 (+11, +14 Spider-Sense, DC 24), Parry +8 (+12 Spider-Sense, DC 22), Toughness +7, Fortitude +9, Will +11

Complications:
Responsibility (Human Life)- Losing his Uncle Ben made Peter realize that all human life is sacred. Even if faced with a situation that all but demands someone be put down, Peter can't do it. Even if they murder hundreds of people, or even the love of his life.
Responsibility (With Great Power Must Come Great Responsibility)
Motivation (Guilt)- Peter's selfish decision cost him the most important man in his life- his Uncle Ben. Another failure saw him lose the love of his life- Gwen Stacy. Peter will never stop trying to make amends for these losses.
Relationship (Mary-Jane Watson-Parker)- Peter's wife is long-suffering due to his dangerous job, but they make do the best they can. Peter worships his wife, and will do anything to protect her. Even when Mephisto steals their marriage.
Relationship (May Parker)- Peter's aunt has raised him since he was a young boy, and he is incredibly devoted to her (especially since Uncle Ben died). Her frequently failing health leads him to spectacular feats of power. If she is sick or needs medicine, then I don't care if you're a #@%*! Herald of Galactus, God of Asgard, or super-powered Mystic Sorceror- get the hell out of his way.
Relationship (Other Women)- Peter's had crushes on or relationships with Liz Allan, Betty Brant, Gwen Stacy, Carlie Cooper, Felicia Hardy and more.
---
Enemy (Everyone)- Peter has amassed a truly horrifying amount of enemies over the years, to the point where his Rogues Gallery is easily as large as those belonging to entire teams. His worst enemies include Dr. Octopus, Electro, Venom, Carnage and more. He has fought every supervillain in existence at least once.
Enemy (Norman Osborn)- Norman has a sick obsession with Parker, seeing him almost as a son, while also trying to either kill him, ruin his life, or get him to become as evil and twisted as the Green Goblin himself.
Enemy (The Symbiote)- Spider-Man rejected an Alien Symbiote years ago, and it has hunted him down ever since, both with Eddie Brock and Mac Gargan.
---
Reputation (Spider-Man: Threat or Menace?)- Peter is mistrusted at best by the general public, no matter how many people he has saved. The police frequently chase him, and no matter how many freaking times a super-villain disguises themself as Spider-Man and commits a crime, the people of New York will automatically believe the lies and chase him. The freakin' Rhino could be in that costume and they would buy it.
Rivalry (J. Jonah Jameson)- Peter's boss, the volatile newspaperman, has a major mad-on for Spidey over all other superhumans, and relentlessly hunts for signs he's gone bad. Aside from this, JJJ is a classic "no-nonsense" newsman.
Power Loss- If Peter gets the flu or a cold, or if something weird is going on genetically, he will lose his powers. Still in shape, he is reduced to Strength 2, Stamina 3 and Agility 4 (6 with Spider-Sense).
Power Loss (Web-Shooters)- Spider-Man runs out of Web Fluid whenever the GM demands it. Always at the worst possible time. Especially if he makes a super-big Web thing. Spidey's GM is an asshole.
---
Responsibility (That Parker Luck)- Spidey has tons of powers and skills, right? Well, too bad, Spidey- you've got the flu, your powers are on the fritz, and you can barely see straight. Oh yeah, and both Kraven and the new Vulture have decided to team up to finish you off. Good luck.
Weakness (Newbie Villains)- Spider-Man has bad luck fighting super-villains making their debut. Though he can beat guys like The Scorpion & The Vulture while standing on his head, a brand-new rookie like Menace or The Shocker can beat him in almost every single fight before they are downgraded over the years. All new villains fighting Spider-Man will be treated as if they are one full Power Level higher than normal (or Spidey as one PL lower, whichever). Assuming this rule is already Houseruled for everybody, then Spidey will feel it twice as hard.
Secret Identity- Peter obsesses over keeping his identity a secret, because of people like Osborn & Venom, who know, and torture him for it.

Total: Abilities: 88 / Skills: 58--29 / Advantages: 25 / Powers: 67 / Defenses: 11 (220)

-No comic book character has ever had as bad of a decade as Spider-Man had during the 1990s. He did manage to get a few popular new villains, at least- Venom hit HUGE as soon as he debuted, and was one of the most popular characters in comics for a number of years, especially once he turned into a Bloody '90s Anti-Hero. Carnage was also a big deal, getting a Super-Crossover amongst the Spidey titles. Superstar artist Todd MacFarlane came into his own by this point, becoming the biggest name in comics in the process- and Erik Larsen was hot on his heels. Their Spider-Man title was a HUGE seller, becoming the second-most-important, but coolest, Spidey book. But... the '90s hit. The Comic Book Crash affected Peter more than any other character- he lost two of his four books, had an endless thing with the mysterious Judas Traveller, had Mary-Jane get pregnant and then LOSE THE BABY (in a story that was basically never touched on in the mainstream continuity again, even though we saw the baby be stolen away), he turned out to be a CLONE, said Clone acted as the main character for a year before they gave up and went back to the Status Quo, and more. It was ugly, ugly, UGLY stuff.

-Spider-Man needed to be rescued, and shockingly they were able to pull it off in the 2000s with J. Michael Straczynski's wildly-successful run. The number of titles was reduced, and Spidey was brought back to a new Status Quo. Well, they kept F-ing around with him by doing a "Mary-Jane is Dead" arc, then finally ERASING THEIR MARRIAGE, just because Joe Quesada hated the idea of Spider-Man being married. Few great new villains were created, though JMS pulled out this giant "Possible Retcon" about Spidey's origin being predestined and involved an Immortal Predatory Sorceror dude named Morlun.

-Spider-Man in the 1990s slightly weaker than the modern day overall, keeping PL 11 in only his Dodge- he's PL 10 on offense, and PL 9.5 with his Parry/Toughness. He only loses a handful of Advantages, and drops fifteen points because he's still basically the same guy, but he's a fair bit easier to defeat. He got challenged by a LOT of scrubs in this era, including people like Delilah and Lady Octopus.

SPIDER-ARMOR SPIDER-MAN:
"Spider-Armor" (Flaws: Removable) [9]
Protection 4 (Extras: Impervious 7) (11 points)

-Basically a one-off that appeared in Web of Spider-Man #100, the Spider-Armor basically existed as a mini-event to sell a cover. A really shiny, metallic-looking cover. You'll remember how speculation and fancy covers worked to nearly-bankrupt the comic book industry. It gave Spider-Man a temporary boost to his durability because a bunch of bad guys were throwing their weight around- the suit was comprised off compressed Spider-Webbing, and pretty much fell apart by the end of the story, never to be seen again... until ANOTHER random one-off story years later, when Pete whips up a new suit in order to fight... The Enforcers? Really?

-The Cosmic Spider-Man story was a brief bit in the late 1980s that featured Spidey getting hooked up with the "Uni-Power", a Cosmic Force that occasionally empowered people in the Marvel Universe (it was created for a special "Send-Away Comic" where fans could give their name and personal information, and get "their own unique comic book" featuring them as Captain Universe. So for a short arc, Spider-Man became the most powerful hero in the Marvel Universe, trouncing the Tri-Sentinel and Magneto, amongst other characters. A fun little romp for the perennial Underdog Hero. At PL 15 (414), this guy's a tough nut to crack.

-Yeah... The Other. Yikes. This is a serious power upgrade for Peter, especially once he adds the Stingers, the Spider Link stuff AND the Stark Iron Spider armour all into one form, making a brutally expensive Spidey. Me, I hated this change, because the Stingers & Spider-bits seemed like lame extra bits to an already awesome power-set that didn't need anything silly added to them. The Iron Spider armor was actually very cool I felt- it just suffered from being added to a guy who ALREADY had two of the greatest costumes in comic book history. The cool armor was later removed post-Civil War and added to the Scarlet Spiders team in The Initiative. Spidey thankfully dropped all the Stinger/Spider-stuff when One More Day happened.

Defenses:
Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness +7, Fortitude +9, Will +12

Total: Abilities: 90 / Skills: 70--35 / Advantages: 27 / Powers: 40 / Defenses: 16 (208)

-Here's Peter as he appears in the [/i]Spider Island[/i] story, sans Spider-Sense. He loses a TON of his Advantages, his Dodge & Parry, and even his fighting ability takes a hit, thanks to be disoriented- all of the things he loses are a result of the "Spider-Sense" Power-Set going away, save for his Close Combat. I think this reflects the comics fairly well, considering that Spidey was REALLY hurting in combat without his familiar Spidey-Sense to back him up and warn him about things.

I remember loving the Sam Raimi films, but they didn't age well especially if compared to current Marvel movies. I found the Amazing Spider-Man films to be pretty "bleh", with the only decent part is Garfield being able to deliver a joke and the fact that the second costume was designed really well.

Tom Holland has a great costume and pulls off all aspects of Peter Parker really well. I'm really excited for Spider-man Homecoming!

Relationship (Mary-Jane Watson)- May is close friends with another old lady, whose granddaughter M.J. is someone who'd May had been bothering Peter about seeing for years. M.J. was a hard-partying member of the counter-culture and a bit of a flake, but May wasn't fooled- she knew Mary-Jane's heart.
Relationship (Various Men)- May really gets around for an old biddy- she was married to Ben Parker for years, and was devastated when he was murdered. She was briefly sweethearts with (and nearly married) Dr. Otto Octavius. While living in a nursing home, she'd hooked up with Nathan Lubensky, who eventually died of a heart attack while being held hostage by The Vulture. She nearly hooked up with Jarvis in Avengers Tower, and eventually settled down with J. Jonah Jameson's father.
Disabled (Friggin' Old)- May is old as balls, and used to be constantly at death's door. Oddly, she has aged down and grown healthier as time went on, but could still drop dead at any moment.

-Aunt May was a huge part of the Spidey Mythos for years- arguably the only reason he couldn't reveal his identity sometimes, and the mother figure and "load" in his life. Between her and being a hero, he was always busy saving SOMEBODY. It wasn't until years later that we got more of the full character behind May- she wasn't some doddering old widow, she was actually quite bright, and saw right through most people's deceptions (like Mary Jane's "Party Girl" facade, or Peter's being "lazy" and "unhelpful"). My favourite version of her was J. M. Straczynski's, as she was among the strongest characters in the Spidey books, coming to terms with his heroic role, talking back to people like Wolverine, and getting Peter through airport security by insisting what set off the metal detector was her "gynecological device" instead of Pete's Web-Spinners (daring the guard to search her; he quickly let the Parkers through).

-As one of the most-prominent supporting characters in Marvel's top character's life, May's had her ups and downs. Initially, she was basically this poor old biddy, constantly at death's door and on poverty row, with only Peter there to equally worry about and support her. She thought him a frail, weak child (which, well, used to be true before the Spider-Bite), and because Peter was responsible for widowing her, and her last living relative, he felt responsible for taking care of her. In fact, the whole "Peter takes pictures of himself as Spider-Man in order to make money, in order to support his elderly Aunt" thing was introduced VERY early on, and given as justification for just about everything in those early years- Peter needed the job so he could support her; and that need forced him to go out and do Spider-Stuff. In fact, before Pete had close friends and girlfriends, May was the ONLY REASON he was really keeping a Secret Identity- her heart was so weak that he was afraid the shock of the discovery would literally kill her.

-Because Peter eventually aged (something co-creator Steve Ditko had resisted), May had a weird place in his life. Pete would still worry about her, but now that curvy dames were in his view-screen, she became a little less important to the stories. He eventually moved in with Harry Osborn, and she moved into a nursing home- little shake-ups in the status quo were very common, even back in the '60s. Bizarre story arcs like her nearly marrying DOCTOR OCTOPUS now come across as more silly than dramatic, and she nearly married some other old fart (a guy named Nathan, who was one of the few to lecture Pete about neglecting his Aunt) until HE died, too, having a heart attack during a struggle against The Vulture (May first suggested he suffer a horrible & slow death, but recanted and said only God & Toomes himself could forgive him, because she would not).

-There was a REALLY beautiful story done in the 1990s where they finally killed off the old bird (she hadn't really been important in forever)- dying of cancer or something, she asked Peter "what was it like, swinging so high on all those rooftops?", confessing to her shocked nephew that "Of course I've always known". However... she really WAS kind of too important a part of Peter's narrative to just erase like that (it didn't help that most of his supporting cast was dead ANYWAYS- a recurring issue with Spider-Man), and so they retconned in some garbage about Norman Osborn replacing her with an actress just to screw with Pete, while kidnapping the regular May. This was REALLY, REALLY STUPID, as, you know, Aunt May is an ordinary person- who in the blue hell was going to go "oh hey, May- you're alive again! Great!" and have anyone just accept it? This crap is par for the course for superheroes, but May had friends and neighbors! What were THEY going to say about it? And May basically just blew off the whole "captivity" thing, essentially not remembering it! This would be REALLY ANNOYING if Marvel hadn't essentially just written that in to get it out of the way, and ignored it as quickly as possible. It probably hasn't been referenced in eons.

-JMS' run featured her discovering Peter's secret life, and the two coming to terms with it- this gave her far more depth than before, as "letting her in" on the secret opened up all these new avenues of storytelling. Of course, One More Day retconned that in-story and now she's clueless again, but married to JJJ's father of all people, making Peter and Jonah related in a nice bit of irony. Of course, he soon died, because Aunt May's genitals apparently carry the same disease that Daredevil's & Namor's do. This leads me to the humorous realization that even freaking AUNT MAY has a ton of romantic partners in a fairly-short period of time, given the rapid-fire nature of Comic Book Time Compression.

-I apologize for using the phrase "Aunt May's genitals" in the preceding paragraph. You may now scrub your brains with bleach.

-Uncle Ben is of course the point on which the entire Spider-Verse turns- Ben's death by a burglar Pete could have stopped earlier is what turned Peter towards super-heroics. We really see very little of him naturally, as he dies in his first appearance, but the subsequent years would frequently show him in flashbacks as this consistently chubby, jovial man who nonetheless acts like a good teacher to young Peter. The "Will Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" line, given in the narration in Amazing Fantasy #15, is soon Retconned into being a lesson Ben constantly imparts upon Pete (naturally, it didn't take until Ben was shot). Ben doesn't look nearly as old as his poor wife May, though both are apparently DECADES older than Ben's brother Richard- the absent/missing/deceased father of Peter. This is hardly impossible, but very unusual- I mean, none of my Aunts or Uncles are close to eighty NOW, much less when I was a teenager.

-Uncle Ben is rather famous for one thing as well- the old phrase "No one stays dead in comics except for Bucky, Jason Todd and Uncle Ben" (most Marvel fans leave out Todd in that one) now no longer applies- Ben is now the ONLY CHARACTER IN COMICS that nobody has ever had the balls to bring back. And don't say it's impossible- you KNOW someone's gonna try it at some point, however stupid it would be. But hey- bringing Bucky back seemed like ten kinds of stupid, TOO. You never know...

-Ben was nowhere near as frail as May (he had trained with the military, and was apparently able to handle himself in a fistfight; he also liked to roughhouse with young Peter), but still no match for a bullet.

-And where would Spider-Man be without The Burglar- the largely-anonymous bad guy who first robs Spidey's amoral promoter, then tries to burgle the Parkers' home? When Uncle Ben gets involved, he is fatally-shot, and the very man Spidey once let go has now taken the most-important man in Peter's life. And so he remained in this one iconic role for years, until decades later- when Aunt May was living in a nursing home (one of many "Status Quo Shifts" over the years), The Burglar, now deemed mentally-unstable by psychiatrists, teams up with Mysterio to interrogate May to discover some secret within her old home. Betrayed by Mysterio and hunted by Spider-Man himself, the Burglar ends up in the very same warehouse where he was first captured. There, Spider-Man reveals his secret identity to the man, explaining his origins and the fact that he is Ben Parker's nephew. Believing that Spider-Man was going to kill him out of revenge, the Burglar suffers a heart attack and dies. I actually kinda want to read that later story- I'd heard about it years ago in an old Trading Card Set. You'd think it would be more famous. Though part of me doubts that Spider-Man would EVER reveal his Secret I.D. to a criminal like that, regardless of his origin story.

-Years later, during the "Ben Reilly" years, his daughter Jessica Carradine has a relationship with Ben. She believes that her father was innocent (and that it was Ben's gun that went off), and that Spider-Man murdered him- when she discovers that Ben is Spider-Man, she nearly exposes him, but soon realizes his heroic nature. Me, I don't really think this origin story needed retcons like "The burglar was hunting for something in the Parker household", but looking at other superheroes' histories, it could be a LOT worse.

The Daily Bugle

Post by Jabroniville »

THE DAILY BUGLE:
-In a neat workaround to justify a lot of what goes on in Spider-Man's life, Stan & Steve had Peter Parker take a job as The Daily Bugle's freelance photographer. Jobs in news reporting were pretty common in superhero books, especially in the Golden Age, because there was both a trend in "Adventuring Reporter" newspaper strips, and it justified the hero being near danger a lot of the time (nobody would question why a REPORTER was hanging around crime zones, after all). And so it became a regular gimmick that Pete would search around for a bad guy, set up his camera on "automatic", and start fighting the bad guy- he'd then sell some pictures and help Aunt May survive another month's rent payment.

-The Bugle, like a lot of Comic Book Jobs, really did wonders for Spidey's supporting cast- his High School actually only had a couple real recurring characters (Liz Allan & Flash Thompson), but with the Bugle, he got to interact with the irascible Spidey-hating J. Jonah Jameson, as well as flirt with the sexy Young Secretary Betty Brant. Eventually we'd also get Ned Leeds added in, and then there'd be a young Eddie Brock. Naturally, this being comics, most of these people have links to superhumans by this point, or ARE superhumans- from their perspective, Peter might be the only person they KNOW who isn't empowered or is related to somebody who is!

-The popularity of the Bugle is somewhat unknown at times (some people are said to be fans, while others view it as a cheap tabloid; it nonetheless does exposes on high-end criminals like The Kingpin)- Jameson is rich as balls, which fits what a 1960s newspaper magnate would be. That was BIG BUSINESS back then. In the era of print media dying, it's a lot harder to justify a single tabloid keeping someone so wealthy, but Marvel's trend-hopped at various points- Jameson even ran a Time-like knock-off. The Bugle itself seems like a straight newspaper mag for the most part, with Jameson being IMPECCABLY by-the-book and moral about it (many arcs have dealt with him refusing to back down from threats by organized crime figures, big business or high-end politicians, all eager to see him stop his snooping around)... except where Spider-Man is involved. Really, at times the Bugle just seems like a "single issue" rag that only exists to harp on Spidey, though apparently most superheroes get it pretty hard. The paper was almost certainly skewed towards the Conservative point of view in Stan's day, as Jameson was a clear Right-Winger who ranted against "bleeding hearts" and backed a total Conservative until the guy ended up being linked to racist hate groups. Stan Lee, a total lefty, would obviously give the rival POV to his biggest douchebag character :).

-Jameson's Now Magazine was at one point joined by Woman, edited by Carol Danvers. In recent times, the Bugle suffered from shrinking circulation, along with the real-world print media in the internet age. Its main rivals are The Daily Globe (more balanced with superheroes), and Front Line, Edited by old Bugle employee Ben Urich. At one point, Jameson was bought out by Norman Osborn, and there was a thing there, and another nasty piece of work named Dexter Bennett took it over when JJ suffered a heart attack, and named it The DB- in this format, it was a Scandal Sheet, and the building was destroyed. This allowed JJ to move on as the Mayor of New York.

Wow, lots to talk about on this one.

Jab, doing multiple variations of the same character after repeatedly stating that he wouldn't do something like that? How many signs of the Apocalypse are we up to now?

The Toby McGuire movies, especially the first two, hold a dear place for me. I couldn't get through the second recent Spiderman and kinda gave up after that. On the other hand, I've really enjoyed many of the Spiderman cartoons over the years. Spiderman and his (Amazing?) Friends was a Saturday constant when I was little. Some of the more recent shows have been a lot of fun too. I may need to look at Netflix binging sometime soon.

Right before coming back to this page, I was looking at Imgur. I read it for the articles, really! Really, honest I do! Today, someone posted the What Would Spiderman Do short comic. Lots of love in such a short story. I'd link but it always seems like the urls over there constantly change.

As far as Aunty May goes, I've never quite figured out her age. Most of the pictures that I've seen strike me more as grandmother rather than aunt. On the other hand, they've made some major changes to her in recent years. Rosemary Harris is such a GILF! Marissa Tomei is a nice touch, much closer to aunt in my mind. My favorite appearance of her has to be the really fierce one from the Ultimate cartoon.

Responsibility (The Daily Bugle/City of New York)- JJ seems heartless, but he is extremely devoted to his newspaper, and will do anything to protect it.
Relationship (John Jameson III)- Jonah's astronaut son is his shining source of pride, and all that remains of his beloved wife. If John is in danger, or worse, overshadowed by the antics of another news-maker, Jonah will be beside himself.
Relationship (Marla Madison-Jameson)- Jonah lost his first wife, Joan, to a mugging decades ago- his second marriage was also tragically cut short, as Marla was killed by Alistair Smythe.
Relationship (John Jameson Sr.- Father)- Jonah seems to defer to his father at times, but the two disagree on many things.
Relationship (Robbie Robertson)- Robbie is the only man Jameson really lets make fun of him or chide him. He's stated once that Robbie is "the man I aspire to be."
Reputation (Cantankerous Bastard)- 'Nuff said. Pretty much everyone in New York considers him a blowhard.
Rivalry (Spider-Man)- Jonah despises the Wall-Crawler, partly for his grand-standing and annoying ways, but also because he represents a near-impossible-to-reach ideal of a perfectly-selfless individual- he has a strong distaste for vigilantism in general. He hates Spidey so much he is willing to create super-villains just to stop him (The Scorpion, The Fly, The Spider-Slayers...). Every time Spidey does something great, Jonah thinks Spidey set it up himself.
Responsibility (Principles)- Jonah will fight for journalistic integrity towards all things except superheroes. He will not back down from threats either financial or physical in reporting about organized crime. He is devoutly pro-Civil Rights, and will not brook racism, even against Mutants.

-You gotta love J. Jonah Jameson. The guy's an absolute bastard at times, yet is the funniest supporting character in the Spidey books, and is a great source of "not so bad after all" situations. Despite this, he's done some flat-out EVIL things, such as creating super-villains to crush Spider-Man (he backed The Spider-Slayers and The Scorpion as far back as the '60s, so this is an unusual case of a guy getting LESS evil in modern times). He publishes any story possible that proves Spider-Man is a murderer (this has happened about seventeen times by my recollection), screams at even his closest friends, and all of New York views him as a blowhard.

-This obsessive desire to ruin one man appears odd, because it's clear with various writers (including Stan himself) that he otherwise has a VERY strong sense of journalistic ethics- he gets into trouble because he refuses to back down from The Kingpin's goons when they threaten him to stop snooping into their business concerns, immediately turns on a conservative politician because he turns out to be a bigot (JJ, for all his faults, and despite being an old-school Right-Winger who hates "bleeding hearts", is immensely in favor of Civil Rights), and refused to help Operation: Zero Tolerance due to its discriminatory nature. I choose to believe he's rather complex- he has all these journalistic ethics, but compromises them completely due to a hatred of super-heroes (Spider-Man in particular). And because you can be pro-Civil Rights, a great reporter, deeply ethical and demand fairness... but still be a gigantic, sanctimonious asshole.

Explaining JJ:
-There've been a few attempts to explain these compromises in behavior, at least- its been written that his War Hero stepfather was abusive at home, making JJ immediately mistrustful of anyone appearing overly-heroic. In Marvels, he simple doesn't trust anyone with tremendous powers that operates outside of the law (and given how some Marvel heroes ACT, you can kind of see his point). Stan has had Jonah admit to himself that he's simply jealous of Spider-Man's courage- that he can't look at HIMSELF as a hero while a selfless character like Spidey exists (and you can actually see a lot of that in the real-world behavior of people who are all-too-willing to first worship an athlete or celebrity, then revel in tearing them down).

-There's also the occasionally-recurring element of Jonah's son John, a famous Astronaut- Jonah thinks it unfair that his heroic son is frequently-overshadowed by superheroes like Spider-Man- when Spidey SAVES John from disaster, Jonah is furious, claiming Spider-Man SET IT UP in order to look good! Jonah is almost always treated like a belligerent buffoon (Steve Ditko always drew him with a prominent, fake-ass smirk), and we're supposed to revel in his frequent sputterings and humiliations. Even when he's the MAYOR OF NEW YORK, which happened a few years back. It lasted about four years (an eternity in comic book terms), before he resigned at the end of The Superior Spider-Man, due to the actions he'd taken while being blackmailed by the newer, more evil Spidey.

JJ- The Greatest:
-But in the end, every Spidey reader loves Jonah- the books just wouldn't work as well without him, the hallmark of a great Supporting Cast member. In fact, he may be one of the more HUMAN Marvel Characters- a dark twist on our own overly-critical, mistrustful nature. There have been numerous great bits over the years showing his courage and leadership skills (during Inferno, he rallies the Bugle while it's left under seige by an army of demons, and even Ben Urich is impressed- "He's a natural leader- we need him."). Though he opposed the "soft of crime" Captain Jean DeWolff, at her funeral he mourns her loss, and even points out that "even Spider-Man doesn't deserve that." He opposes Randall Cherryh's run for Mayor due to his ties to organized crime, even though losing the impending lawsuit could mean bankruptcy for the Bugle ("You want me to quash the story?" "... No. Just be very sure.").

-And let's not forget the PHENOMENAL performance by J.K. Simmons in the movie series- the guy practically stole the entire Trilogy by himself. I mean, I still can't forget that this is the same actor who sodomized and tortured poor Beecher for years on OZ, but the man is a great, scenery-chewing actor. So glad he finally won an Oscar for something, too.

JJ's Stats:
-JJJ is a skilled reporter (+14!), and a bit more dangerous than most bystanders (he's a viciously-angry old man), but ultimately would falter before anyone with reasonable combat skills. But he's Fearless- the man has told the Kingpin to go take a flying leap, and in the "Godzilla" comic, he basically looked out his window and told the monster to shut up because he couldn't concentrate with all the racket. The man has brass ones.

Honestly he set the bar too damn high. I don't know that they can get anybody else to play that character anymore.

I loved how the writers of the movie knew his character and you get to see multiple sides of him seconds.
One moment he's being a cantankerous dick, trying to screw poor Peter Parker out of money for the pictures he took, then when confronted by a homicidal Green Goblin only seconds later is ready to die lying to protect Peter.

He's flawed, he's got good and bad sides to him. It makes him human and enjoyable because while he can be a reprehensible person, he can also be an amazing one.

-Robbie debuted in the mid-sixties as a counter-point to JJJ, and one of comics' very first non-offensive black characters- the late '60s and early '70s saw a LOT of black characters added to comics and comic strips, as even Peanuts added "the black kid" (who had no personality traits of his own, really). Dennis the Menace did the same, but it proved disastrous (Hank Ketchum drew the new kid with a racist "Sambo"-like appearance, and protests at newspaper offices led to the character being dropped). But since Stan was a socially-concerned leftie, it was only natural that a real, positive black character entered the Spider-Man book, alongside other subversive elements he and others had added to the Marvel Universe (like The Black Panther, or that one black scientist in The Silver Surfer's solo book).

-Personally, I liked the recollection that one black writer had in a documentary about comics: while DC was doing silly stuff like "Lois Lane's day as a black woman!", Marvel would just do stuff like have Peter recognize a black student at his high school (it was basically just "Hey, Pete", "Oh, hey!")- the writer noted "Oh my God!! Peter Parker goes to an INTEGRATED High School!" and that it was actually more meaningful that Peter would just react to a black person like nothing was out of the ordinary, rather than make a big thing of it.

-Robbie was calm, collected and a strong voice of reason without using the Positive Discrimination of the "Magical Negro" at the same time- a real rarity- generally, he sat calmly behind JJ's blustering self, simply smoking his pipe and making short, direct statements. He was, in fact, the ONLY person able to routinely chide or tease Jameson and get away with it- their old friendship and Robbie's sense of tact at work. His most drawn-out storyline came as a result of Tombstone, a gangster thug who'd tormented Robbie since they were kids, mainly to keep him from revealing Tombstone's more vile acts to the public. The feud got bloody many times (Robbie was thought-crippled once) before it was mostly dropped (Tombstone was shocked when Robbie, used to running & hiding from Lonnie, furiously defended himself with a pitchfork). Robbie still shows up fairly often, leaving the Bugle at various points to protest Jonah (I preferred the "they're close friends, but disagree a lot and don't hate each other" take on their relationship myself).

-Robbie ends up taking over the Bugle (after an arc in which it's wrecked by a guy who turns it into a muck-raking tabloid), but hasn't done anything for a while.

-Pretty shortly after Robbie Robertson's debut, his son Randy was introduced. He was a bit of a Student Activist, but was a bit of a voice of moderation over the more "extreme" kids. He acted like a lot of black kids did in the comics of the era- a bit tempermental; kind of a chip on his shoulder; etc. The treatment of blacks was one of the dominant issues of the times ('course, that hasn't really changed), and he was kind of the "face" of it in Spider-Man, contrasting his calmer, laid-back father.

-Randy kind of disappeared from the Supporting Cast in the 1970s, having married a nice Jewish girl, but they eventually divorced. When Peter Parker went into the ill-advised "Swingin' Bachelor" mode when MJ was thought-dead in a plane crash, Randy was dusted off and made his buddy and roommate- he played kind of the "normal guy" routine, and had to deal with supervillain stuff a bunch because Pete kind of draws that kind of activity. Randy even dated Glory Grant for a bit, but he largely disappeared a second time when MJ turned up alive. Next time he appeared was while dating the Front Line reporter Norah Winters, the ex-girlfriend of Phil Urich, the newly-evil Hobgoblin- Randy thus became a target, though was able to fend off Phil thanks to gaining Spider-Powers during the Spider Island event.

-Randy's a classic Bystander's Bystander, with few appreciable bonuses. And seriously- I can't even find out what his JOB was- he can't have been living in NYC on nothing. Maybe he did Civil Rights stuff? That seemed to be his bag once upon a time...

-A very minor character, Glory Grant (they MUST have been inspired by Stan's naming themes) debuted in the "Gerry Conway" era in the 1970s, adding another minority face to the Spider-Verse. She was Peter's neighbour, and aspiring model, who then got a job as Jameson's secretary at The Daily Bugle, replacing the long-gone Betty Brant (who had kind of been through being utilized at that point). Her only real storyline of note was when she hooked up with a guy who turned out to be a gang leader, and nearly murdered Spider-Man out of loyalty. She has followed JJ pretty much everywhere, but finally quits his employ when she realizes that he will never end his personal vendetta against Spidey.

-Glory's a pretty standard "Bystander" build, but is pretty sharp.
