VERMIN (Edward Whelan)
I never really had much of a connection to Vermin outside of that one Kraven story, and honestly, they should have just let him be cured and move on. In the world of Marvel Comics, a "rat man" just doesn't really stand out. Though it is interesting how the whole "animal hybrid" thing acts in Marvel.

Like, Spider-Man can lift 10-15 tons regularly due to his spider-powers. The Lizard is stronger than Peter by a noticable degree, and Vermin was around Peter or stronger in their appearances. So logically, Tigra should be as strong or stronger than Spidey, right? And Stegoron should be immensely strong, like Rhino/Thing level, being a frickin dinosaur man.

I don't know, sometimes I feel like there should be some kind of accepted animal pecking order of superstrength or something.
I think it depends on your source- since everyone's grabbing stuff from different power sources, they end up with varying amounts of power. Not that comic book strength ever makes any kind of sense anyways (why is a RAT so strong?).
Sin-Eater is kind of interesting in that he seems to showcase a lot of real-world consequences of superhero fights. Jumping out of the way of a gunshot is cool, but in a crowded area those bullets are likely to hit somebody. And they showed what had happened to Carter after the beating Spider-Man gave him. Basically, Peter had beaten the guy so badly that it was like he'd had a stroke, being deaf in one ear, slurred his words, had to walk with a cane, etc. That's what happens when a normal guy pisses off a guy who can bench press a car.

Regarding the fight with Daredevil and Spidey, that didn't really bother me. For one thing, that wasn't really "Aunt May Mode" as some people call it when Peter fights for his loved ones and becomes an unstoppable force of nature. In those cases, he's fighting desperately not to let the tragedy of Uncle Ben repeat itself. It's a primal need to save those he loves and Heaven help you if you get in his way. Against Carter, Peter wasn't trying to save anyone. Betty had been rescued, Sin-Eater had surrendered, and all Peter was really doing was venting his anger at someone. It was anger without real purpose, without cause and barely any direction, it was just Peter lashing out wildly at someone who had taken away someone he cared about.

Daredevil, on the other hand, is someone who has fought evenly with Captain America, Wolverine and Iron Fist, making him legitimately one of the best fighters in Marvel, while also being an acrobat just under Peter's skill level, and having senses that let him telegraph Peter's every move in his angered state. Matt should do decently against Peter during any fight, and in a fight where Peter is fighting sloppy, falling to the same kind of psyche out tactics Peter uses on his foes, I've got no problem with Matt winning.
It isn't something that REALLY bugs me or anything, but I did find it "odd", like I said- I kind of associate Spidey's rages with stuff like the moment he nearly ripped Norman Osborn in half after Gwen Stacy was killed. One of those moments where you realize how strong Spidey is, and how dangerous he is when he's not holding back. Though comics tends to be iffy on just how much anger screws up your fighting- sometimes it's "Spidey agitates people into using Power Attack and missing", and sometimes it's "an angry enemy is the ultimate threat, and much more dangerous". Granted, real life is much the same way- anger can screw up trained fighters in professional situations, while other guys can focus it, and in "street fight" situations, angry people are dangerous because of the comparative ferocity and willingness to fight extremely hard. Of course, in "real life", Spider-Man would beat every human-level guy in one hit :).

And as my stats reflect, both characters were a bit weaker back in the mid-80s anyway. Marvel is, if anything, more likely to consider Spider-Man far above "normal human" guys today than they were back in the olden days.

Total: Abilities: 106 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 20 / Powers: 93 / Defenses: 14 (247)

-God what a piece of shit villain.

-Morlun was JMS's "Big Villain" reveal in Spider-Man- a nigh-unstoppable ancient menace out to kill Animal Totems, and thus, a deadly adversary for Peter. They basically went out of their way to be all "OH MY GOD THIS IS THE GREATEST THREAT EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR", shilling Morlun endlessly ("That's the hardest punch I've EVER TAKEN!"), but of course forgot to really give him any kind of compelling CHARACTER beyond "get in mah belly!" He just kind of attacked Peter again and again, before Pete was able to "taint" his blood with radiation, causing Morlun to decay (he was killed by his picked-upon henchman). He returns during The Other, taunting a mysteriously-ill Peter, but he's ripped apart by an awakened Spider-Man, using new powers. Morlun crumbles to dust with Peter having ripped his throat out with fangs.

-He is briefly resurrected to job to the new Black Panther (Shuri), but reappears in earnest during Spider-Verse. He and his "family" begin searching through various realities, killing and absorbing the Spider-Men of these worlds, showing that literally every version of Spider-Man ever (The Electric Company version, the Indian Spider-Man, a few Japanese ones, etc.) was in fact a canon character SOMEWHERE. Morlun shows a whole group of "Inheritors", and reveals that he was born on an alternate Earth, which he then took over, killing the Master Weaver or somesuch thing. And there's a prophecy about various Spider-People that will KILL the Inheritors, which is what this is all about. Also, Morlun has a father named Solus, who's in charge. The Inheritors are nearly finished by a Captain Universe-Powered Spider-Man, but they resurrect themselves via a cloning process they've found on another Earth (this explains Morlun's resurrections), before Kaine and a bunch of Spider-Clones get involved, and Kaine morphs into a giant Spider Avatar and kills Solus. At the end of this ludicrously-complex storyline (full of incredible pretense, like everyone being called The Bride, The Other or The Whatever-The-Hell), Earth-616 Spider-Man traps Morlun and the remaining Inheritors on a world destroyed by nuclear holocaust, trapping them "forever". Meh, still a fun crossover just for all the cameos, but WOW do they push all the pseudo-mystical crap hard.

-Morlun is basically big and powerful, and nothing more. His entire family has powers on the exact same level, as any one of them can take on multiple Spider-Men and win. Only trickery and tactics help the Spiders save the day.

Total: Abilities: 78 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 76 / Defenses: 10 (190)

-Silk is pretty much brand new, and a representative of Slott's new arc on Spider-Man- once Peter was back in control, he was confronted by the existence of Cindy "Silk" Moon, another "Spider-Totem" (relating to the whole Ezekiel/Morlun mystical plot where Peter was the "Spider-Totem" and was hunted by the mystical Morlun). Turns out she was bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker, giving them BOTH Spider-Powers- unable to control hers, Cindy was taken away by Ezekiel the Spider-Mentor, and locked up in a super-facility to protect her from Morlun the Spider-Hunter. When Spider-Man discovers her existence during Original Sin (an event that started out okay, but got increasingly-stupid and pointless as time went on- the main point was that... Bucky is now a Space Sniper who shoots random aliens? Because THAT'S a big secret that needs to be kept? That MARVEL EARTH is under attack by aliens sometimes?), he breaks her out, telling her than Morlun is dead.

-They begin humping like bunnies out of some kind of animalistic "Totem Link", and she keeps on as the vigilante known as Silk, showcasing superior Spider-Sense to Peter. She ends up getting her own book, making her a full-blown attempt at a Spin-Off Character. And I mean... the CONCEPT is solid enough- if you want to push minorities and female characters out there, the only real way seems to be to make them spin-offs of major heroes and put them into current, important stories (she gets wrapped up in the Spider-Verse story)- every other method seems to not work. But the idea of ANOTHER Retcon? And even more stuff about the "Mystical Origins" of Peter's powers? Never mind there being yet another female Spider-person out there. Not a fan of the general idea. At least it doesn't really CHANGE Peter's origin (basically, the only thing different is that another person got bitten, too). I like her costume, though- even variations of the Spider-Man theme look great.

-Silk's solo book seems to be plugging along over the past couple years, though I haven't heard word one about it, and had to check and see that it was still coming out. It involves a lot of stuff with her apparently manipulative and kinda-evil father.

-Silk is still a newbie, but naturally gets the "New Character Push" of being better than Peter at certain things- her webbing is natural and more-versatile (the tiny hooks really don't make it THAT much better in my opinion; just hurtier to take off; she also has a porous and an insulating setting). Her Spider-Sense is also slightly-better, making her more agile (she can dodge things Peter misses), and able to detect people from further away (I guess that's enhanced Perception). I figure her for PL 10 when it all comes down to it- equivalent to the 1980s Spider-Man, but MUCH more well-rounded (I'LL SAY- *growl*), with great Defenses- she ussually goes Full Defense more than Pete does.

And the whole "six people are unstoppable, even with a literal army of Spider-Men with access to stuff like freaking mecha and the local versions of the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four and whatever-the-heck is Spidey's ally." And he killed some really beloved Spideys and Slott made it clear on insisting that it was the 'canon' versions of those Alternate Spideys (like the "Amazing Friends" one) even when everybody was very viciously angry about it.

JMS gave the guy New Villain Stink. Slott turned it into a full-blown pestilence.

It's hilarious that EVERY TIME that story gets brought up, someone brings up the Spider-Man Robot. Which I've literally never heard of until that story-arc, but so many treat like it should have been the centerpiece of the story or something. That damn thing has a Doom Patrol Fandom :).

Rivalry (J. Jonah Jameson)- Jameson leads the hunt for Spider-Woman, blaming her for the death of Peter "The Lizard" Parker.
Power Loss- If Gwen gets the flu or a cold, or if something weird is going on genetically, she will lose her powers. Still in shape, she is reduced to Strength 2, Stamina 3 and Agility 4 (6 with Spider-Sense).
Power Loss (Web-Shooters)- Spider-Woman runs out of Web Fluid whenever the GM demands it. Always at the worst possible time. Especially if she makes a super-big Web thing. Gwen's GM is an asshole.
Secret Identity

-The character colloquially known as "Spider-Gwen" (even her SOLO BOOK is named that!) is an Alternate Universe Gwen Stacy, one who was bitten by the Radioactive Spider. Largely though, her character is the perfect, ultimate representation of the importance of visuals in a visual medium like comics- the character was a huge and immediate sensation in the comic book industry WITHOUT AN ISSUE EVER HAVING BEEN PRODUCED, simply by virtue of having a cool-looking costume. Sure, the CONCEPT was interesting ("Grrl Rock Gwen Stacy With Spider-Powers"), but this was entirely based off of that great, weird variation of the Spider-Man look. I can't imagine having to draw all those red "spider web" designs all the time- it's basically a nightmare without a computer.

-After her first appearance (a smash hit that required multiple printings), she was recruited into the "Spider-Verse" heroes, assembled Spider-Dudes, and became a major operative. She even gets a solo book, and fights some slightly-modified versions of common Spider-Foes, then gets mixed into the current Secret Wars mess. We'll see what becomes of her, especially since there's approximately 9,000 other Spider-People out there, though her ongoing (set in her own universe) is still a thing. She'll actually be the FOURTH Spider-Woman now that she's entered "mainstream Marvel" continuity on a permanent basis.

-I figure Spider-Gwen for a standard "PL 10" 1980s-style Spider-Man, as she's still quite young-looking, and seems to be in the early years of her existence.

So, did the Ochre Ogress (or whatever) throw her universe's Peter Parker off the Martha Washington Bridge, ultimately killing Peter?

Um, no. It's not a gender-bent universe. This is a summary of what happened.

-Haha, THE FLY. I would've never known this guy even existed if not for buying one of those old Official Handbooks, but what a classic "Mort" character. He's a short-lived Spider-Man foe that never went anywhere, getting injured in a gunfight and forcing the scientist brother of the guy who altered The Scorpion into turning him into something tougher (he later killed the guy just because). He's got Spidey-lite abilities, but when your main foe is SPIDER-MAN, going Spidey-Lite is probably a crap idea. Spidey handily beat him in their first fight, and soon Deacon began mutating further, gaining compound eyes and stuff like that. After a few more battles (once against Moon Knight, and another against Jessica Drew- his DNA was used to empower one of her supporting cast into becoming The Hornet), he was attacked and killed by the Scourge of the Underworld, along with dozens of other crappy villains.

-This is a near-direct conversion of my 2e version, and he's surprisingly cheaper given how conversions work now. He saves points because all his ranged damage comes from his Air Blast, meaning I only need a Skill for it instead of buying up all his Attack Bonus (not sure why I did that before- though I recall I never liked going full-on Attack Specialization before. Now, with costs going up, I find it acceptable). He's also a pretty spectacularly weak PL 9- he's PL 8 in melee, and only makes full PL 9 status with his Dodge/Toughness trade-offs. He's almost as strong as Spider-Man but not quite (makes you wonder why they bothered with him- most of Spidey's enemies are either MUCH stronger or fast guys, or energy users), and has a Ranged Blast and an Area Knockdown, along with some minor bug powers. He's kind of silly altogether.

-Getting offed by Scourge woulda been the end of it for this loser, but during a Punisher arc, eighteen Scourge victims were resurrected by The Hood. Now packing Acid Vomit and Sharp Wings, plus a new name (The Human Fly), he begins eating people, gets a wing cut in half by Frank Castle, and is soon beaten. However, he survives, becoming a bit of a Background Jobber, primarily in Flash "Venom" Thompson's book.

... was Castle having an off day? That's positively merciful for him.

-The Foreigner has a ridiculously-generic and forgettable name, but was meant to be an elite assassin figure to compete with Spider-Man. He's the ex-husband of Silver Sable, and debuted as a "behind-the-scenes" figure, sending jobbers like Chance and Sabretooth (yes, he was a Jobber back then) against Spider-Man and his ally, The Black Cat. Turns out, he just wanted Spidey to become his personal assassin. When this failed, he hooked up with the Cat himself, but she betrayed him to Spidey. He showed up quite a bit, usually manipulating or hiring others to do his dirty work, and formed The 1400 Club, a gang of assassins. He tended to succeed, and only "failed" when his own personal whimsy interfered (he decided not to go through with shooting The Kingpin when he found out they shared a birthday- he killed his employer instead). His most-notable victim was Ned Leeds, who was framed by Roderick Kingsley as The Hobgoblin.

-Apparently Editor Jim Owsley/Christopher Priest was going to out FOREIGNER as the true identity of The Hobgoblin, but Peter David objected and swapped in Ned Leeds. Though I've ALSO heard that Owsley did the Leeds thing himself, pissing off all of his writers.

-His Wikipedia page seems to go out of its way to declare him the awesomest, greatest and most-competent martial artist in history. Seriously, it says he's similar in ability to Captain America & Wolverine, and knows ALL of the martial arts- did The Foreigner write his own article or something? However, he's also jobbed to Silver Sable, so he's not THAT great- he's effectively a great PL 9 Fighter & Gunslinger who has a unique "Hypnotic Gaze" trick that can stun his enemies for a second. He's used this technique on Spider-Man, from whose perspective it looked like The Foreigner had simply teleported away- he usually uses this skill to enable his escapes.

-Silver Sable's one of those characters that I've never really cared for. It's hard to even really put a finger on why- she just feels ODD in Spider-Man's gallery of friends & foes. It's like... Tom DeFalco just wanted to write some Spy Stories, and used Sable as a GM PC in order to force Spider-Man into various espionage hijinx. But she's no fun-loving, Sexy Spy Lady like a Bond Girl or anything- she's kind of a harsh, demanding Ice Queen. But not in the sexy way. And her design never struck me as terrific either, despite having two thinks I LOVED as I was a pubescant teenager: Platinum blonde hair and an outfit that made her boobs shiny. And it's not like Emotionless Ice Queens weren't sexy to Young Jab either- I was IN LOVE with Betsy "Psylocke" Braddock! She was also kind of over-pushed in the Spider-Man 1990s cartoon, showing up seemingly every week to do some boring damn thing. I felt like I couldn't get AWAY from the character in that series! Maybe it's because I just don't care for the spy genre, so have little taste for it intruding into my superhero books.

-Silver Sable is even weirder than your standard spy- she's the leader of a spy organization that drives the economy of her tiny home nation of Symkaria (which borders Latveria in the "Fictional Slavo-Russian" portion of Europe), and is also devoted to hunting down Nazis. Her mother having been killed in front of her as a child, she's come to remove all emotions from herself (which is part of what makes her a dull character- she's not even "Characterfully Emotionless" like Mr. Spock). She came into Spidey's life by competing with him for various plot Macguffins, or hiring him to steal the same, and things were generally kinda weird between Ol' Web-Head and the Ice Queen. Eventually, the two parted ways.

-Sable was chosen as the subject of one of Marvel's many, MANY out-of-nowhere new books that came out during the Comics Boom of the early 1990s, joining the ranks of Darkhawk, The Darkhold Redeemers, Morbius, Deathlok, Sleepwalker and others- basically books that would have stood zero chance of success in any other era but the one where people were snapping up EVERY stupid thing like it was candy. Not that the book was BAD (I actually never read it as a kid, and one issue I've read as an adult is pretty forgettable), but the very idea of gun-toting mercs running around doing merc stuff just doesn't appeal to me at all. Nearly that entire era of new books was cancelled, but only after 30-40 issues- like I said, it was the Boom period. They did merc stuff for a couple years, then vanished, and she was barely-seen for over a decade.

-Her modern appearances were also few and far between, as the whole "Action Girl Spy" thing was by this point more than taken up by The Black Widow (who was a big character thanks to The Winter Soldier and the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and Misty Knight (who Marvel keeps trying to push due to her minority status), but she helped out Spider-Man during the big fight against the dying Doctor Octopus. Unfortunately for her, she was drowned in water by The Rhino, who also perished. Of course we never saw a body for either... so naturally both made returns in the record-timing of modern books (which is why death almost literally means nothing anymore). Turns out she used her stealth mode to distract the Rhino (even though he was physically holding on to her at the time), and survived.

-Silver Sable is pretty much where I thought she'd be- an over-cost PL 9. She's an elite martial artist, a great markswoman, and very all-around Skilled with tons of Advantages, but she lacks the "oomph" of the elite martial artists of the Marvel Universe like Daredevil, and doesn't quite match The Punisher at gunplay. She's kind of out of place in super-powered slugfests, but for Merc-type stories or deals, she's ideal. She's near-perfect for an NPC to get your heroes to go out and gather stuff for her (to gain a profit, of course), and so she could probably be given nearly any kind of equipment. For build-purposes, I just gave her a standard allocation of weaker and tougher Automatic Pistols, a Sabre, and her favoured weapon, the Chai- which they're probably gonna have to change the name of since the "pretentious ass tea-loving bastard" movement has led to that word being associated with Indian Tea. She starts throwing Chai and anyone NOW, and she's gonna have to deal with an army of hipsters.

I never understood the Fly being a Spider-man villian. I mean they gave him the proportionate abilities of a creature that regularly gets killed and eaten by spiders... That would be like having the Human Torch fight a Paper-Man.
